Absolutely, $ brings out the worst in people & family are the worst. The manipulation/backstabbing is unbelievable and all the old wounds get ripped open. I'm living through this and my twin & older brother are like strangers to me...I don't know them anymore. I used to physically shake when driving down to my folks house after I got married...actually shake. It was a very traumatic experience even to talk on the phone with them. Only complaints & complaints as to why I wasn't this or that which went over the edge when I became a letter carrier...destroyed my country club parents. After that, we were "persona nongrata"?? That was the end of me as a family member for all purposes. Even being the 1st child to get a full time job, get married, have kids & buy a house without their $ help meant nothing. And never heard the words "Ilove you" ever again from either of them. Add to that a couple of million in the mix & bam...here we are! But the past is the past, my wife & kids weren't subjected to such craziness & we went on to live our lives. End of story. But growing up, they sure drove nice cars...Caddie's, Lincoln's, a Corvette, a early Riviera & a couple Toronados's among other ones. The business paid for most of the leases so it was a win/win for the folks. Sorry this got so long, just ancient history now but thanks for reading it all!

And living in South Florida, a convertible is just made for here.
Driving in a convertible with the top down on a perfect day (I like it to be around 70 and I especially prefer evenings) is one of the greatest things you can have....a great feeling, even better than the feel of the road.
Even a used Cavalier convertible or a used Mustang would make it a great experience.
I understand 80% of convertible owners only buy one convertible. I think once you have done it it just doesn't seem as important any more. But, so far, I think I would get another one.
I highly recommend it, and if you think you would like one, go for a test drive when you are in the market for a new car.
While not a convertible story, I still to this day remember in the early 90s driving my Maxima wagon home from a Phillies game (I'm a Mets fan but the Phillies are closer) on this perfectly wonderful summer night. Just me in the car with the radio up loud and the roof open. Just perfect.
I do toy with getting a convertible to just drive in the summer but I have no place to put it. Already have 4 vehicles - and four drivers...

If I ever did buy one, I'd want something with a bit of style...at my age, only have about one more car purchase to go. We'll drop to one car eventually as my spinal issues are only going to deteriorate to the point that driving will become an impossibility I've been told. And once I'm in a wheel chair, wouldn't want to drive anyways. Let the wife or kids or grandkids, if any, drive me wherever. But a Cavalier or some other low life 'vert just won't do it. Some style is mandatory at the very least...correct? And who knows what some of these car companies have up their sleeves right now. As the population ages and more and more move to warmer climates for the final leg of the journey, they'll need some "fun & stylish" ragtops. And if the econo class is any sort of indication, there should be lots to choose from.

That's a sad story, Sandman. I'm glad for your sake that you have a healthy attitude about this stuff.
My experience as executor for my Dad's estate (Mom died a year earlier) was actually a pretty good one, considering the circumstances. His will was clear & to the point: everything was to be divided evenly between my sister & me. He had also done a good job of consolidating his assets so that all I had to deal with were a couple of bank accounts (both in the same bank), a brokerage account, his house & an 8-year-old Taurus with only 28K miles on the clock. (See - I'm keeping this car-related.) After selling off something, I'd deposit the proceeds in the estate's checking account & then write a check for half that amount to my sister.
My sister also helped greatly by not giving me a hard time about the decisions I had to make.
I think that it's much easier if there's just one executor. Years before they died, my folks asked me to take on this job. Then they sat down with my sister & explained why they had made this decision.
Now that's a piece of art I must say. Class with a capital "C"...a timeless look that holds up well to this day. Like a finely tuned time piece that gets better with age. Might need to buy 'em both...lol!

I only have one first cousin- on my mother's side. We were never close, but we got along okay. So she gets engaged and -of all things- sets her wedding date at the same time as the 1984 Louisville vs. Kentucky basketball game(I had season tickets for Louisville at the time). Now, you need to know that in Kentucky a pervert is defined as someone who likes sex better than college basketball. Anyway, I told my mom that I was sorry that my cousin didn't consult the UL and UK schedules, but I was going to The Game. She said I HAD to go to the wedding. I said they could disown me or worse but I was not missing The Game. Well, that pretty much made me the black sheep of Mom's side of the family for the next 22 years. I finally got back in their good graces last year when my elderly aunt passed away; she left everything to my cousin and her two kids and to me and my son. I handled the estate so there were no legal fees. So I think I'm back on the Christmas card list again.

After watching my dad have to referee his siblings when my grandmother died, I told my parents and sibs that I didn't want anything. If they wanted me to have something from the house, they could let everyone know. If there was any money left, we could split that up but it just wasn't worth it for me to fight over "stuff."
Amazing how calm I was when it came time to move my parents out and into an assisted living place a few years ago. I ended up with a couple of pieces of furniture I really liked because they offered it to me. Nice.

That Sonata (I believe) makes a great looking convertible. Funny how some cars adapt so well into becoming convertibles. Mustang styling lends itself nicely to being a convertible.
If I ever did buy one, I'd want something with a bit of style... Here's one- and it's only $8995:
If I put in a vote for the nicest designed car of all time....those Mercedes would be the car I would vote for. I like square cars to begin with, so that's one reason I like it, but I think it is perfectly balanced and designed.
For $9k, I would adjust to the learning about a different car. Besides, as you get a little older, that design is suitable for more mature drivers - it will always look beautiful.
"...80% of convertible owners only buy one convertible."
I'm in the other 20%. I'm on my 5th convertible. Why did you post a picture of a Sonata instead of the Sebring? I think that our Sebring design is just as pretty.
sets her wedding date at the same time as the 1984 Louisville vs. Kentucky basketball game...Well, that pretty much made me the black sheep of Mom's side of the family for the next 22 years
I believe the Cards won that year, so sounds like a good trade-off to me.
Louisville is having a great season thus far. I thought they'd finish at the bottom of the conference, with about 16 wins, and not make the tournament. Shows you how much teamwork, good chemistry, and coaching is more important than raw talent (i.e Kentucky) Pitino certainly should get coach of the year.
Have you had a chance to see a game in the KFC Yum Center yet? It's very nice, but I prefer the cozy confines of Freedom Hall better. Go Cards! :shades:
"My experience...was actually a pretty good one..."
That's because you are honest and your sister is understanding. In many families, it doesn't happen that way. Also, some Wills are open to way too much interpretation. That makes things worse. When several million dollars is involved, people get possessive and nervous. They also turn mean.
I can so identify with your experience. When my wife married a school teacher, and became one herself, her parents and brother took great offense. What a slap in the face to this well known political family with Mayflower ancestors and plenty of money. We paid for our status over the years---looked down upon at family gatherings and the brunt of snide remarks. They even had their final revenge with their Wills---20% for the daughter and 80% for the evil son. My wife's evil brother is having a duck fit because this one cousin left my wife the contents of his home, and left the evil brother nothing. I have to laugh. After all of these years, a measure of justice has been served. The cosuin was always kind to us both and tried to make us feel comfortable at family gatherings. With his own money, he didn't care what the other family members thought. We only went to the family gatherings because my wife still wanted to show them that she loved them. I really did marry a jewel.
Well, I guess you won't need Driver's BMW or my SRX. Just when I was getting ready to amend my Will. Would you have room for my golf cart? I could leave that to you.
Richard, it's called "class" and your wife has it. My family, except my grandmothers, were extremely rude & condescending to my wife, the mother of their 1st, 2nd & 4th grandchildren, who like Mrs. Richard, rose to the occasion and was always polite. Years after the fact, I finally learned how she finally let my mother have it, lady like of course, but she got her point across about how badly they treated me, the only one without $ sighs in his eyes. She also has class in that way, said what needed to be said nicely & to the point. But it didn't work...she went to her grave never having sat down with our 3 kids to have a normal conversation, even the times I said I wanted her to meet them, she made sure to go up to the club & hide. Her loss as my in-laws were 100% the opposite, treated me as their son who spent 6 days a week at our house to make sure their daughter & grandkids were happy & taken care of...that "unconditional love" I never got. G-d works in mysterious ways.
Think you are right about that convertible...a Sonata. I was so tired & drugged out that it sure looked like a smaller car. But yes, it's made to be a convertible with the fluid lines down the sides...a seem less alteration, if you will. It'll work for us!!

There are a LOT of those nice, winding roads with beautiful scenery in KY. I lived in Jessamine County for quite awhile, and my roommate had a VW Golf convertible. This was back before there were any roads apart from the winding, 2-lane variety between Lexington and Nicholasville. I used to love the drive - still do, when I go back for a visit.

I don't think Florida would survive without Canadians. There should be a direct high speed rail service from Canada to Florida.
Whadaya say that we test that theory? I think the people in Florida are tired of you guys bringing down that cold weather with you. Give em a break already, would ya. Can’t verify this but I’ve heard that airfields are considering closing down gates for flights from Canada given the hard winters of late. So, that “high speed rail service” may be you’re only hope.
As for convertible owners having one and then being done, one of my brother’s lives in Del Ray Beach now (see above, he’d like to test your theory I’m sure) is now on his third convertible. This one is a Sebring hardtop that he leased a few years back and now that I think of it, that lease will be up in January of 2012 (I think). He’s already said that he’s going to get another convertible, just not sure which one but he’ll get another Sebring if the deal is right because he really likes this car. He had a Solara before this one but couldn’t get the deal he wanted so he got the Sebring. He’s not loyal to a brand but he is a loyal convertible lover.
And why I don’t know, but he is also a loyal lease person and has been for many years. His main reason is he doesn’t want to own a car that will require work. He also likes having a new car every three years and apparently he can afford to take the hit for this vice.

Sandman - You have a spectacular attitude & outlook on life, especially given your condition. I just cannot believe your OWN TWIN! Being a Dad of a 2 year old & 4 year old, I cannot for the life of me understand how someone cannot want anything to do with their own grandchildren for whatever reason. Things happen between parents & adult children (however trivial they may be), but to drag it on for another generation is just insane.
There's a HUGE Tsunami of an inheritance mess that will go down sometime in the next couple of years that I am not looking forward to. I don't feel comfortable posting the details in a public forum, but anyone who's curious can email me & I'll let you know the gory details.
A convertible is something I've always romanticized about. I just cannot see myself financially being able to justify a 3rd car purchase for the forseeable future. I know this is the wrong thing to say, but I am young (34 going on 35 in April) & have time on my side. I'd love a Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4 (current hard top convertible or previous generation ragtop), or even a Corvette.

I understand 80% of convertible owners only buy one convertible.
I am in that 80%, having had my only convertible over 50 years ago. Never had the urge for another, and if I did, it would have to be a hardtop convertible like the one I had. My son has owned several through the years, and would probably not hesitate to get another. He's the type that drove top down in 40 degree weather, which I was never was comfortable with....
May I ask why you wouldn't want another? I know some people who wouldn't get another convertible due to quality issues that have been mostly eliminated in newer rag tops.
He's the type that drove top down in 40 degree weather, which I was never was comfortable with
Thats why they put heaters in those things :P
The lowest temp that I have had the top down was 47, but usually don't drop the top unless the temps hit 60 or above.

I just never felt I would use it. I seldom open my sunroof on my current car, too much wind noise at high speeds.
I sold a lot of convertibles when I was selling cars from 1997 to 2008, and took many in trade. Drove all of them. There is a big difference in quality between brands. Some felt so flexible and had so much cowl shake they were scary. The brand I sold was the best by far, at least in my opinion, and felt like they were carved from a single piece of steel. So if I ever got the urge, I know exactly what I would buy.
The lowest temp that I have had the top down was 47, but usually don't drop the top unless the temps hit 60 or above.
Growing up in Steel City, a bunch of us used to take my 1971 Olds Cutlass Convertible down to where the hot ingots came out of the steel mill on rail cars. We would park as close as possible then drop the top. Usually in below freezing weather. The heat from those ingots warmed the entire area making the beer we were drinking all the more enjoyable. Anything similar, jmonroe?
Wills for children should always be for equal amounts unless there is a very serious reason to make it different...such as a child being in prison, doesn't communicate, won't work, or in the other direction, needs extra help.
l family with Mayflower ancestors
Is that the ship or the moving company? Funny how stuff like that makes some people feel superior. My grandfather was sent to the frontlines of the Russian army during the Russian -Japanese war of 1904-5. Knowing he would be killed fighting with a pitchfork as his weapon, he decided to make a run for it. Escaped to Germany and got on a ship to Canada, thatnk goodness. Whenever I see Russians living in terrible conditions, or men doing that dance where they kick their legs out, I feel so fortunate that he escaped...or that could be me!
Mayflower ancestors? Your wife and I may be distant cousins.
We don't need any more relatives for Richard! I'm having a hard enough time as it is....
When I had my Sebring I'd have the top down if it was even borderline nice. I was amazed at how well the heater worked with the windows up and the top down.
I REALLY want that Sonata convertible! Sure hope they actually build the thing.

When she mentioned that to me, I showed her the partner programs we have though work, plus a private offering I know is available. She told me today that she bought a Loaded Fusion SEL 4 CYL and after driving the Fusion, she didn't bother looking at the others. According to her, The dealer she bought from had all the choices. 4CYL, 6CYL, AWD, Sport and Hybrid. Said her first fill up was 28.6. Better than the 10 year old Altima (passed on to newly licensed driver) was getting.

The only ship that my family was related to was the Titanic. When my aunt, now deceased, was one year old, her parents had tickets to sail on the Titanic. Their train taking them to Southhampton was an hour behind schedule. They missed the ship boarding. What a stroke of luck. I might never have known that wonderful, sweet lady. Her son now possesses the valuable ticket to sail on the Titanic. He'll never sell it. It will go to his son when he passes away.
My son and his family live in Nicholasville. He and his wife are teachers for Jessamine County Schools. My wife and I have been there many times to visit them and the grandkids. We even managed to score an interesting antique clock from one of the antique dealers there.

I'm in the other 20%. I'm on my 5th convertible. Why did you post a picture of a Sonata instead of the Sebring? I think that our Sebring design is just as pretty.
Richard
I believe the Cards won that year, so sounds like a good trade-off to me.
Louisville is having a great season thus far. I thought they'd finish at the bottom of the conference, with about 16 wins, and not make the tournament. Shows you how much teamwork, good chemistry, and coaching is more important than raw talent (i.e Kentucky) Pitino certainly should get coach of the year.
Have you had a chance to see a game in the KFC Yum Center yet? It's very nice, but I prefer the cozy confines of Freedom Hall better. Go Cards! :shades:
That's because you are honest and your sister is understanding. In many families, it doesn't happen that way. Also, some Wills are open to way too much interpretation. That makes things worse. When several million dollars is involved, people get possessive and nervous. They also turn mean.

Well, I guess you won't need Driver's BMW or my SRX. Just when I was getting ready to amend my Will. Would you have room for my golf cart? I could leave that to you.
Richard
Think you are right about that convertible...a Sonata. I was so tired & drugged out that it sure looked like a smaller car. But yes, it's made to be a convertible with the fluid lines down the sides...a seem less alteration, if you will. It'll work for us!!

Hold it right there, podner! I'll make room gladly. Once I have the SRX I can sell the Ody. Maybe I'll buy a bigger place with you generous cash legacy.
It would be just like you two to outlive me just for the sport of it....
Hey, rb! We should do a home and home series for Louisville vs Rutgers. You'd have the real fun in that the Cardinals would cruise to easy victories but at least we could talk cars all night....
Whadaya say that we test that theory? I think the people in Florida are tired of you guys bringing down that cold weather with you. Give em a break already, would ya.

You and me both, I love driving the
bosseswifes Sonata, great car and it would be fantastic as a rag top. Looks super sharp too.Hey Hyundai read this thread.

A lady at work was looking for a new car.
She drove a 10 year old or so Altima and said she was going to look at Altima, Camry, and Fusion.
Are you trying to tell us that you will be leaving this world for the next soon?

both look way nicer than the sedan.
Personally, I like the looks of the Kia version better.

LOL! Wish I had thought of that one years ago!
