When I use my AMEX card to get gas (NY/CT/NJ), I'm always prompted to enter my zip code.
I drove to Hilton Head, SC with my best friend one July 4th weekend. We took the Prelude. I filled up in NJ right after leaving NYC, then again somewhere in VA, then tried to fill up again in SC. My AMEX card wouldn't work. I call up and they said the card was just used at a gas station at (whatever time it was) in VA and now it is being used again in SC. They said the computer spit out that I couldn't have made it between the last 2 points (VA & SC) in such a short amount of time.

LOL.....Craig, in a previous lifetime I remember several occasions on which you mentioned having a great sales story which you couldn't tell because either the sales person or customer might be too easily identified by collegues at the store.
Hasn't enough time now elapsed that you can safely dust off some of these gems from the past and take us away from discussing names for garage bands?
Yeh, except the tourists are mostly Canadians....and they don't have ZIP codes.
Just like you Canadiens - thinking the world revolves around you!! :P
I would venture to guess there are many more American tourists visiting Florida every year then there are Canadiens.
There are 40 million visitors to Florida every year. The population of Canada is 33.7 million. If one were to define "mostly" as 1/2 plus one, that would mean that almost 60 percent of Canada visits Florida every year.
Well, I've already done that somtimes by changing around the names and events a bit.
I once had a very (being nice now) challenging customer that ended up trashing me by name in an Odyssey Forum. I had heard about this from a long time customer who had stumbled into that forum.
I tried to carefully choose my words of rebuttal but I got immediatly banned and my attempts to sneak back in were unsuccessful.
It was a family shopping for a new Odyssey about five years ago. I remember them well and I remember they played every textbook trick in the book.
Normally this didn't bother me but these people just went too far.
I always tried to be open and upfront with my customers and I always hated the coy people who tried to outsmart me. I looked at this as an insult to my smarts and my experience.
These people came back several times. Brought their unruly kids along, wife had a bad cold etc. They pitted me against every store they could find and I knew that they would cut my throat if they knew they could save 100.00 somewhere else.
I knew they were going to spring their ratty Windstar trade on me even though they wouldn't admit it. For those who may not know, a Windstar in grubby condition is a car few people want. They do NOT bring the values the books say they are worth.
Long story short... the deal finally got done. They never smiled once and were as cold as ice. I'll take part of the blame. I really didn't like them or their manner from the get go and I probably showed this.
The Windstar was FILTHY inside and out. It looked like a rolling restaurant inside and it took the detailers days to clean it out and make it look halfway presentable.
They left unhappy and I figured this is how they went through life but maybe not. I would much rather not sell a car than to have a customer leave unhappy. This didn't happen very often with me.
Then to go to a public forum and trash me afterwards?
My carefully worded rebuttal got erased by thier hosts and I got immediatly banned. Unlike this place, I guess the salespeople are the Evil Empire.
I don't like to bash other sites/forums, but that's pretty lame that they wouldn't let you respond. We don't generally allow salespeople's names in the forums to begin with, but if someone did trash you by name and you were OK with your name being mentioned, that pretty much gives you free reign to mention THEM by name in a response.
Two sides to every story... both should have a chance to give theirs.
Except for one or two nutsos, we've had nothing but good experiences with salespeople who actually participate.

I would venture to guess there are many more American tourists visiting Florida every year then there are Canadiens.
The number of Canadians who visited Florida is around 3.1 million. (An estimated 3.1 million Canucks visited the Sunshine State last year, up a whopping 16.2 per cent from 2009 and the highest number in more than a decade). That's almost 10% of the total visitors. There are large portions of visitors from Europe and Asia so the 3.1 million is probably a large proportion of the total, represented by one group.
Let's put it this way, the Florida economy would suffer a lot more than it has, without us Canadians escaping our winter and spending our $1s there. Oh yes, and who do you think is buying up the property there?
I've been around here since the beginning and I've seen a lot of salespeople come and go probably just like they do in the business.
I never used these forums to promote business and the hosts (I think) were well aware of that.
I've been attacked by a few (not many) posters who have nothing but contempt for those in the business and I always tried to disarm them. If I couldn't do this I would ignore them and eventually they go away.
And, I understand. I used to despise car salespeople and I never thought much of them. The So. Calif market is loaded with exactly the kind of salespeople who bring on the bad reputation. I met a lot of these and had anyone told me that I would be selling cars one day I would have laughed.
But, I met some good ones too along the way especially at the store where I worked. A couple of times we hired a slimebag that somehow made it through the interview process but they never stayed very long.
Generally, those who had so much contempt for salespeople that they couldn't resist continually bashing them as a group eventually worked their way into trouble with "the management" around these parts.
driver100: Of course there are fewer Canadians visiting FL than Americans. There are fewer OF them to start with. You've gotta look at your fair contribution to the FL economy, which would be more like, what percentage of Canadians visited FL compared to the percentage of US citizens?

I thought of that too, but I can't find that number. I will give it another try but that statistic is hard to come by. I think a lot of Americans have never travelled more than 100 miles from home...once I read it was 80% which would be hard to believe, but that would really lower the number who go to Florida.
If any one can find a number that would help.....I would like to know. :confuse:

I find that very hard to believe also unless that is a percentage taken in the 30's. Knowing how/when a given number is derived is more important than the number itself.

Of course not! At the horse racing track where I worked in college we did have many a good regular who drove clunkers - for the most part they alerted us to what was about to fall off or any other little trick we needed to know.
It was the occasional customer who only came on big days and parked valet - and had the crazy junker that got on all of our nerves - they would forget to tell you to turn the key and hit the starter button under the dash or some important bit of information.
The best of course were those who insisted on leaving a single key - if you every look at a valet key board the basic design works best with a key ring - single keys get lost/misplace all the time.
The really funny one though was the day that we gave a mid 60's white chevy sedan to the wrong guy. both cars were parked close, and the valet went to the wrong one, however the keys for both cars were interchangeable. The first guy got about half way home before he realized it was not his car. He came rolling back just as the second guy was just starting to lose his mind.
Seems that a lot of Dodge trucks have a very big wobble that makes the whole truck vibrate and bounce. Dodge says it isn't really anything to worry about. To see watch this: Dodge death wobble
Some information reported on CBC News: Vehicle can't be controlled "We've gotten lucky — that we haven't hit something or ended up off the road," said Warren. "You can't control the vehicle. The truck is literally bouncing off the road."
Warren and his wife, Jennifer, are so worried that they avoid taking their four-year-old son in the truck.
"It's nerve-racking," said Jennifer Warren. "I am a little sick to my stomach until we finally get to where we are going."
Since his first experience with the "wobble" in 2008, Warren said his truck's steering box has broken seven times.
"They put the last steering box in three weeks ago. It lasted three days."
Warren's 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 has had numerous repairs, but Warren says they haven't fixed the problems. (CBC)He also said his tie rods failed this winter, causing his wheels to splay out in opposite directions, stopping his truck cold.
"I happened to be turning into a parking lot. That's another lucky thing. If it happened 10 seconds earlier, I was travelling down the highway. One tire went to the left, one went to the right," he said.
Numerous videos posted on YouTube by Dodge owners illustrate the shaking during the so-called "death wobble" is severe and difficult to stop.
An internal Chrysler service bulletin, obtained by CBC News, shows the company has been aware of this problem since 2006.

I would agree completely. But, half of Americans live in a pretty warm climate, many don't travel, many can't travel, there are lots of other countries with people who go to Florida......so the number of Canadians is probably fairly large in comparison...but won't be greater than the number of Americans.
Ya know, if you are hot to trot on some Florida real estate I have just the thing for you. My dad had this little coop unit in Clearwater. We now have it. If we had sold it back when he stopped using it we could have cleared $100K for it. A few years later the number was $50K. At that point we had a winter renter in it which just about covered expenses.
This past winter the renter said he couldn't afford it this year.

Hope not -- Craig's good people.
While this board has gone way astray of where it started, it's the only one at Edmunds that's going to hit 100K posts. Edmunds got a burr in its saddle a few years ago about "granularity" and reducing the back-and-forth among all the old-timers on the boards. As a result, many of the very active boards died. This one didn't.
I think that's a good thing. They're letting us run, and what we've ended up with is the best pub-style board on Edmunds. And, as a bonus, sometimes we talk about car purchasing experiences.
Since the economy tanked, there are fewer car purchases and those that occur seem to be more utilitarian. People bugling about how horrible the customers or dealers are are less frequent -- sales guys actually have to work rather than post here. Buyers, well, who knows.
Either way, this is a pretty good place to hang out, at least for me.

have not heard of this outfit, but there are plenty of used car dealers that will do the same thing (I know of a couple near me that I discussed doing this with). pretty much they comb the auction listings, find something that looks good, and set a max price. if it checks out and they can hit the number, they get it.
But, the $399 seems pretty cheap. The guys I dealt with would also do a full inspection/refresh on the car to make it good to go. More normal markup is probably about $1000-$1200 (their profit) but that includes the basic servicing and detail.
Spent the day with my dad during his first round of chemo but it looks like it has been busy around here.
Richard: I seem to have a habit of leaving the garage door open. I've done it overnight several times but the worst was when I was still working and had to be out of town for a couple of days. I guess I drove off to the airport and didn't shut it. When I got home after two days, there it was, wide open... and nothing was the worse for wear. Good thing we live in a safe neighborhood.
Stickguy: As you know, NJ and Oregon are the only states that ban self-serve pumps. I visit our neighbors to the south (Oregon) on occasion and I hate waiting around for someone to pump my gas, especially at busy stations.
There is a huge rivalry between Seattle and Portland in soccer (and other things). Last weekend the Timbers and Sounders played their first match since Portland joined the MSL this year. Both clubs are known for having very supportive fans. At one point the camera isolated on a Seattle fan holding a sign that read, "Real men pump their own gas."
Murphydog: I had to use a certain airport parking lot because of a contract we had with them. It was valet only. On one return trip, my key wasn't on the right hook or something because they couldn't find my car. I waited and waited and finally one of the guys had me hop in a customer's car and we drove the entire lot until we found my car (in the last row, of course). I thought it was odd that they used someone's car to drive me around. I wondered what they used MY car for.

RE: Auction Direct But, the $399 seems pretty cheap.
Here is what they say...though the $399 isn't mentioned here. Maybe it is extra if you want an inspection and warranty.
Step #1 Tell Us What You Want! Complete the Vehicle Request Form on the right. Step #2 We Find It & Buy It! Leave a 100% risk-free, refundable deposit, subject to approval of the vehicle when it arrives. We locate your vehicle by searching hundreds of wholesale outlets, such as bank liquidations, rental car companies, off-lease sales, and, of course, dealer auctions.
Your vehicle should be ready for pickup or delivery within 7-10 days. We also ship anywhere!
Step #3 Inspect the Vehicle and Drive It Away! Your vehicle will be Auction Direct USA-Certified by our 85-point inspection. You're welcome to inspect the vehicle prior to delivery. Visit your local Auction Direct Used Vehicle Superstore; receive all the benefits such as financing, warranties and even our 3-Day/500-Mile money-back satisfaction guarantee.
Seems to be 4 locations, Jacksonville, Raleigh, Buffalo, Rochester. Auction Direct
And I am not getting a commission for this, but their mission statement and philosophy sounds pretty good;
Auction Direct USA was formed in Rochester, New York in 2005 by a handful of rebellious automotive businessmen who loved the car business but not the current practices used to sell cars. Using their combined 70 years of automotive experience with wholesale auto auctions and automotive retailing, the exciting new sales environment of Auction Direct USA was created. The result was a completely "customer-driven" sales process in a fun, open atmosphere, with a tremendous selection of vehicles at really low prices.
Our Mission Auction Direct USA is committed to revolutionizing and legitimizing the used car business, guided by the principles of trust and open information exchange, to provide a truly unique and satisfying automotive purchase experience for every guest, in every way.
interesting. sounds like you get the car as it rolled through the auction, with maybe a quick buff and polish. The inspection is gonna just be the basic stuff.
I know that the auctions have to take back cars that were misrepresented (frame damage not disclosed, etc.) so most likely their once over is to just make sure there is nothing significant wrong with it. And they probably don't buy anything rolling with stated needs (bad tires, stuff like that).
It also sounds like a good model for cutting down on overhead (lots, stock carrying costs). But of course, you lose the drive by impulse buyers!

With this in mind.....prattle on!
You could be right. I saw that report on the 6 year old family room TV. If only our heath care was up to date I'd be current with the latest findings, eh? :P

But, the $399 seems pretty cheap. The guys I dealt with would also do a full inspection/refresh on the car to make it good to go. More normal markup is probably about $1000-$1200 (their profit) but that includes the basic servicing and detail.

I always think: Show me the laboratory or was it tested in your bathroom?
Another one that i like is: "Most doctors recommend..." Really? What kind of doctors, how many, and send me a list of names.

Wow! Talk about "feel of the road"! :shades:

LOL! Good show my man!

Yes. You did shame me and I deserve it. It's another clear example of how curiosity killed the cat.

Our Mission
Auction Direct USA is committed to revolutionizing and legitimizing the used car business, guided by the principles of trust and open information exchange, to provide a truly unique and satisfying automotive purchase experience for every guest, in every way.

Ok - what was that about Cary, NC. I seem to have missed that. Have an ex BIL there and a nephew in Apex.

My sister almost moved there from NY about 15 years ago, and she used that slogan (containment area for relocating yankees) too.
