I have never really noticed or had a problem with a particular brand, but I do refuse to buy at one of the no-name generic gas stations. And best as I can tell, none of my cars have cared.
the only real issue was with the Tl (a 2000 with 156K on it now). Originally my sisters car, she learned early on that it was really unhappy with regular, but just fine with mid-grade.
I have had it for 2.5 years now, and almost always it gets mid. Once in a while I put in premium (usually on sale day, when it was only a few cents more), and honestly could not tell the difference. But I felt like I was doing something good!
Just not a car. Finally broke down and spent the money on the TV we were discussing a week or 2 back.
after much debate, and soul searching (OK, searching in my cheap puritan heart), we went with an LED. The plasmas were OK, and cheaper, but my wife listened to the salesman, and just liked the set better, so we went with the LED.
ended up going with the Sharp Aquos52"920 series. Was originally going with the 120hz model (model line below, and 830 I think), but after some negotiating, they knocked $50 off and we went with the 240 hz model, and some assorted other techno features that I frankly have no clue what they are, but are supposed to make the picture even better!
pretty much state of the art at this point, so should die (or I will) long before it is technologically outdated.
of course, had to buy a new stand too, and both boxes are sitting in the kitchen. House is currently a disaster, since all last week workers were here putting in the upstairs laundry room (tomorrows big project is getting that all painted, so the plumber can do final install next week).
Buying a car would have been vastly easier, and at this point, no more expensive! Though I am pretty sure I have increased the value of my house over the last few weeks by more than what I spent on the projects.
But man, getting the place put back together is going to be heck.
I'm not taking any chances; I get Shell 93 and use the Kroger discount.
Me, either. It's Shell 91 for our new CX-7 (93 not available in Colorado).
In fact, got a call last night from the wife. She was attending a graduation party for one of her employees out in the boonies. She said the "distance to empty" monitor on the car showed 19 miles and it was 21 miles to where the Shell station was; was I ready to bring her gas should she run out?
I told her that once the DTE monitor shows 0 miles, the tank should still have 1.5 - 2 gallons left. The specs on the CX-7 show that the tank holds better than 18 gallons, but I've never put in more than 16-16.5 gallons in any one fillup. Needless to say, she was doubtful that my information was accurate.
Never got a follow up call; the DTE monitor still said 4 miles when she got to the station. However, since this was the first time she's had to fill it up, she was a bit surprised that it cost $64!
The ION, OTOH, gets 85 octane from the local Kroger store. Never a problem. The MINI, I think, gets PUG from wherever the daughter happens to be when it needs gas. Usually at the Kroger station, I believe.

On a serious note, it sounds like a great TV and according to the one article, an LCD or LED TV should last for 100,000 hours - at 4 hours a day that works out to 68 years!
I am surprised it took $67 in fuel. My wife hit $64 in her Denali once. I don't think my Escape has that large of a tank. $42 max for me.
Last week 12 gallons of premium cost me $72! $6 a gallon in Canada....stop complaining!

"...and as always, I was pretty firm on my price..."
I took my nephew out to look at an old Ford which was priced at $1200. When I called the owner he said "I just want you to know, I'm VERY firm on the price, so don't ask me to go lower". I accepted him at his word and said it would be an easy yes or no choice.
We inspected the car and found out it had no brakes and that the title was not in the seller's name so we passed.
A few days later I saw the same car listed for $1000. A week later it was $800 which was the last listing so I assume it sold for $800 or less.

People would tell me how they were looking at an "identical" used car somewhere else that had a lower price and less miles etc.
A few months ago when we bought the Sonata I pretty much used that same line. We were looking at a demo and I mentioned that used ones with the same amount of money were going for less. In this case it was true and the salesman knew that. it did work.

I don't know if it was a regional or national promotion, but the local Ford dealers had a "Special Event" last Thursday centered around the new Ford Focus. If you attended you were given a chance to win one. My wife and I were already in the vicinity, so we stopped by the dealer with The World's Most Incompetent Parts Department"(the one that told me via e-mail they had the synthetic transmission fluid I needed- so I drove over there only to find they DIDN"T have it- and the guy at the parts counter told me I shouldn't have relied an e-mail from his own department) Anyway, we were driving a 328i loaner and the dealer was even featuring "Valet Parking"- two of the kids frantically tried to wave us into the valet line. They must have really been bored to get excited over a base 3er, but they weren't getting their hands on it, loaner or not. All the excitement was too much for my wife, who decided to stay in the car. Anyway, a sales guy was nice enough to point me toward the big show. I had to fill out a raffle ticket and sign a guest book and give an e-mail address and a phone number. After that I was asked, "Would you like a bottle of red or white wine?" They had special "Focus" branded wine from a local winery. After I took a bottle I quietly slipped out before the "festivities" began. I wasn't there more than 10 minutes. Win/Win...

That's why I said $950. A poster here mentioned a year or so ago that it would be around $900 for an "oil service". I remember being surprised. I am thinking that it was Driver, but I could be mistaken.
Valet parking? Not in this life time. I've heard too many horror stories. There are times when it is the only option, and I cringe until i get my car returned. Also, never leave anything of value in the car. Some guys have sticky fingers.

The times I have used valet parking (always while dining in the Loop area of Chicago) I have not had any problems. Beats finding the parking garage and going past all the "reserved for valet" spaces. and the cost is about the same.

Ah...you paid when you bought the car. No such thing as "free"!
Didn't say it was "free". I said there wasn't a charge, and whether I paid before or not...it is still a nice feeling to not have paid for any repairs or oil service for over 10 years.
It also says "BMW thinks enough of this car they have made, that they will back it with a 4 year bumper to bumper warranty. They actually back up your expensive investment....they believe enough in the cars they make they give you a full warranty - for 4 full years.
Even if I paid before, there are no surprises, and I would have paid the same price for the car if it didn't offer this feature.....so it means total peace of mind and it is a nice bonus for me. That's how I see it.

Do you have one of those big containers to fill up, or are you doing it manually and taking it to the dump yourself? What a job! I hate going through other peoples old stuff.
We have good friends who are not in good health...their house is filled with every possession they have ever owned. I think we will be the one's that will have to go through it...no other family that lives on this continent. Their 2 1/2 car garage is so full of junk they haven't parked a car in it for over 30 years.
I really dread the day....there isn't much of value. These people are multi-millionaires but drive cars until they won't go any more. He had to get rid of 2 cars so now they have an '83 Chev wagon, and a 2006 Chev Uplander. It is a shame they didn't spend more when they could, but they get a thrill out of holding on to their money.
I thought the same thing at first, but then I noticed that it was under the additional comments section of the survey. (we also were forced to "coach" the customer on how the surveys look for us) But you live and learn.
yes, I should have been more specific, I did not realize at the time that it would be required. I would think that that would have something to do with why I was transferred, but I like to think of the change as a promotion! we didn't lose isell, did we? When I take my car in for servicing the service manager asks me if I am completely pleased because there could be a survey, and they want a perfect score, so let them know right now if there was any problem. Can't get much clearer than that, though I am sure there are some customers who will never be 100% satisfied.

So, my fiancee's 2009 Mazda 3s is having what appears to be some electrical issues. Only has 15,700 miles on it, so it is still very much in warranty.
This is the second time I have brought her car to the Mazda dealer it is at, and really is the only one I can bring it to because the other is about 20 miles away and is horribly inconvenient unless you're driving there at 2am. The next dealer from there is an hour away. The service advisor here has the worst attitude I have ever seen. It isn't clear whether he thinks I'm stupid, or if he treats all customers this way.
I'm not sure if this is standard at Mazda, but I've never encountered this before; I was forced to approve a diagnostic fee on a 2009 that is in warranty, in case it is not a warranty issue. I wasn't going to argue with him, but I've never had to do that before on an in-warranty car. Mind you, this is the same dealer that left a wrench under her hood when it got an oil change 4 months ago denting the under side of the hood. They fixed it, but only after I had to make a ton of noise.
Normally I would get her car serviced at the dealer in Ohio where we purchased it since we are up there enough, but since this is a warranty issue and causing her some problems when driving, I didn't want to chance it and brought it right over. Suffice to say however, this dealership will never earn my business for any of their products - not just Mazda.
Rant over.

I am surprised it took $67 in fuel. My wife hit $64 in her Denali once. I don't think my Escape has that large of a tank. $42 max for me.
This past weekend Mrs. j went with Son #2 and his family to visit a relative in Reston VA. My Son drove his newly acquired ’08 Sedona and to be a nice Mom she picked up the tab for the tank of gas before they headed back to PA. It was $67 dollars and that was for regular. So it is very possible to spend that today to fill up. I’ve spent over $73 a couple times to fill the Genny (20 gallon tank or there abouts) with regular.
Now that we’re talking gas prices, where is this price reduction I heard about 2 weeks ago? I heard the supply tanks were ready to burst due to the drop in demand. Who here other than my family is helping to keep these prices from from falling. It sure doesn’t take that long for prices to rise.

Right now, as we speak post, I have an empty peg board slot for a missing screw driver. I’ve questioned both of my Sons as to its whereabouts but both swear that it must be the other one. I’d question Mrs. j but she wouldn’t know a phillips head from a pair of vice grips and even if she did I’m not up to questioning her about a screw driver that isn’t even one of my favorites.

The pumps all stop at $99.99 nowadays which means I nearly always have to go through the whole 'insert card, remove quickly, enter zip etc.' process twice every time I fill up (AMG H1).
I find it tedious to say the least. If I'm good for $100 on a credit card then I'm good for $150 as well.
"Another one of pulling junk from the former homestead."
I do share your pain in cleaning out the house. We've done three of those now. With the most recent cousin's house, we made a decision on the last day that we were there. We were down to the junk, and I could tell that my wife was worn out. Those trips to Charlotte for several weeks were beginning to take their toll on us, plus dealing with the law firm and the town's people over the house being demolished. I said to my wife, "Why don't we just leave the junk to the wrecking crew? What does it matter? The house is coming down any way." Without flexing a muscle she said, "I'll get my coat and purse." Though it was a very stressful experience, I did have to laugh as we were leaving. My wife took the key and locked the front door. I said, "Doesn't it seem rather futile to lock the door to a house that is going to be torn down next week?" She had to laugh as well.
Perhaps I could see your point in Chicago. Fortunatley, I usually have other less stressful options in this smaller resort community. Still, even when I'm in Raleigh or Greensboro (both an hour from here), I use the parking garages. I don't care to have my seat positions changed, my radio changed, my steering wheel posiiton changed, etc. Also, some guys love to see how fast they can make it to the 24th parking level.
"...they believe enough in the cars they make they give you a full warranty-for 4 full years."
They aren't the only company that does that. Besides, we all pay for it up front or on the other end. Yes, I'm sure that they believe in their cars---to make as much profit as possible. That's why they are in business.
It isn't clear whether he thinks I'm stupid, or if he treats all customers this way.
That kind of stuff really irks me to no end. You could do what I did a few years ago when I was being given a line of total BS from a tire store that didn’t balance my tires when the store manager was trying to explain that it was done but I knew that it wasn’t.
Try this (but keep in mind that you are closing the door on dealing with them again but in my case I didn’t care because I wasn’t going back there):
As the store manager was laying on his line defending their poor workmanship, I glanced behind myself a few times. After about the third or fourth time the guy said, “excuse me sir, are you expecting some one”? I said, “no, I keep thinking that you’re talking to the a-hole behind me but there isn’t anyone there”.
Like I said, you’ll close the door but you’ll let him know that you're not an idiot.

Try it if your a Canadian. Since our VISA doesn't have a ZIP code (we have postal codes that look a lot different) our VISA won't work at the gas station. My wife has to go in and stand by the cash register and pay the guy when I am finished....kind of like a hostage.
I'm sure that they believe in their cars---to make as much profit as possible. That's why they are in business.
I have had other cars with warranties....and often you take it in under warranty to be fixed, and the dealer says, "We are charging you because that particular repair wasn't covered by the warranty".
So, I find, even though I am sure I am paying up front, that it gives me extra peace of mind that I don't have to pay for any repairs or even oil changes for 4 years - I don't have to worry about it, think about - try to fight the dealer, lose sleep, become a nervous wreck, get an ulcer......I just drive it for 4 years, no worry.
It's just a lot better for me, than the Mazda plan that's a few posts above this one.
Cars these days are very complex....4 years of no additional surprises is a nice extra...even if it is built in to the price of the car.
So, there is a price to pay for your "free health care" afterall.
I should have explained....this happens when we are visiting your great country. It isn't nice because Canadians have this problem in Florida, where so many people that are buying gas are Canadian.
Here, we can just use our credit card...people can be trusted more I guess...no having to put in ZIP codes.
But yes, the price of a gallon of gas hear is around $5 and almost half of that is taxes, so we do pay for our "free" health care. But, would you rather pay $1 more a gallon or get hit with a $100,000 medical bill? Think of it as insurance.
It isn't nice because Canadians have this problem in Florida, where so many people that are buying gas are Canadian.
Don't feel bad, I live in the USA and when I visited my brother in Delray Beach in January 2008, I had to enter my ZIP code too. Seems like those sunshine people don't trust outsiders, no matter where they are from. Just for that I shouldn't go back there but we have another visit scheduled over Memorial Day. Since I'll be there with my other brother this time, I think I'll let him buy all the gas for that week.
But, would you rather pay $1 more a gallon or get hit with a $100,000 medical bill? Think of it as insurance.
If that's all you're paying in increased taxes that would be a bargain but you guys are paying through the nose in other area too for that "free health care". I believe in insurance but not at those prices.

Also, never leave anything of value in the car. Some guys have sticky fingers.
Just put everything in the trunk and use the valet key.

Or just drive an old beat up car that you don't care about...that way you won't worry about valet guys ruining your car.

You knew it couldn't have been driver - it was spelled correctly....
What a day. Another one of pulling junk from the former homestead. We're down to junk. May have been the last day. May indeed now end up moving someplace warm in a couple of years. A real cord-cutting experience.
I think it is "spelt".

Isell was away for a little while...looking for topics that were car (Honda) related....but he is back if we stay on topic.
When I take my car in for servicing the service manager asks me if I am completely pleased because there could be a survey, and they want a perfect score, so let them know right now if there was any problem. Can't get much clearer than that, though I am sure there are some customers who will never be 100% satisfied.

Ha ha, I love you rich guys and your fancy gizmos!
For many of the cars I've driven the "valet key" was a screwdriver.

Rant over.
Emotionally its' tough and it is a lot to go through. And, no, none of this is money. About the closest i came is furniture that I liked better than what I had. This doesn't take much.
I officially don't have any rich aunt or uncle left so the Richard method of accumulating wealth will not be open to me. Time to start looking for a well used convertible....

I hate when that happens.
Right now, as we
speakpost, I have an empty peg board slot for a missing screw driver. I’ve questioned both of my Sons as to its whereabouts but both swear that it must be the other one. I’d question Mrs. j but she wouldn’t know a phillips head from a pair of vice grips and even if she did I’m not up to questioning her about a screw driver that isn’t even one of my favorites.jmonroe

They aren't the only company that does that. Besides, we all pay for it up front or on the other end. Yes, I'm sure that they believe in their cars---to make as much profit as possible. That's why they are in business.

Hope you took one last look behind before you said that.
With my luck a knuckle dragging gorilla would have walked in just as I spoke the line.
Try it if your a Canadian. Since our VISA doesn't have a ZIP code (we have postal codes that look a lot different) our VISA won't work at the gas station. My wife has to go in and stand by the cash register and pay the guy when I am finished....kind of like a hostage.

I find very few stations that require a zip code in my neck of the woods. I wonder if it is just certain brands of gas.
Maybe it's regional rather than brand based. Here in FL it seems to be universal.
