We haven't had to move ours, but we have had to mount every one of them on a telescoping, rotating wall bracket (my boyfriend is anal retentive very particular about this) and the lighter weight has made it possible for the two of us to do it together without risking dropping the TV.

Good grief. I didn't know that people moved those large TV's around the house. Believe me. When I get one set up, it stays there until we move to another house or the set dies. I can just see myself messing with all of those wires.

I'm off to see the attorney. It should be an interesting conference. I'll let you know what he says about the ticket.

Yes, the weight is an issue. Not as bad as the big honking 36" tube TV (our sony weighed in at about 160#s IIRC). not that was hard to move!

I checked some specs the other day, and I think the 50" plasmas was about 80#s. The 52" LED was about 60, so not that much difference.

One question about the plasmas. How is the reflection issue these days? it won't be in direct outside light where we have it placed, but there are lamps. Do you still tend to get more shiny reflections off the glass, or has that been tamed?

Some friends and I went down to the Masters in 2007. The golf course itself was gorgeous but I was very surprised at how seedy the overall area around the golf course was. We were not impressed by the city of Augusta, at least the parts that we saw.

I moved back to the Burgh in ’97 so it might be a little worse now than I remember it. I’m familiar with the stretch of Washington Road that Augusta National is off of and that was not the best projection for the city back then either. If you head out towards Martinez and further down the road into Evans things got a lot better. Still, the city should do something about the front porch to Augusta National.

I know this will be hard for people to believe but when I went down there in April ’92 a friend of mine offered me a free ticket to the final day of the Masters that he had come by from the company where we worked. Since I am not a golfer I said, “thanks for offering but give it to a golfer, they’d appreciate it a lot more than me, but I’ll join you for dinner afterwards”.

Mrs. jmonroe had returned home after a week of house hunting the first week of April of that year and when I told her about the chance to go to the Masters on the companies dime, a couple weeks later, and I backed out, she said, “well, that was a nice thing to do but I guess you know everybody will now know for sure that you’re nuts don’t you”?

Honestly, this friend did not have a problem at all giving it to a mutual friend. Of course this recipient acts all hurt that he wasn’t offered it first. I don’t know what excuse was given to him but he gladly accepted the freebee.

There are plusses and minuses to both plasma and LCD/LED. LCD/LED are lighter and use less power, however the more recent plasmas are also energy star rated. Plasmas may have richer color, among other things, they are able to display a truer black, the LED based tvs are close but still don't display black.

One thing that plasma does do very well is to display fast motion. If you are a sports fan you may appreciate that, there really is less blurring in the motion. A plasma will also display a wider viewing angle, LCD based have a somewhat narrow angle in which the picture is good.

I purchased a 2010 model Samsung 42" plasma and have not regretted it. It may display some reflection but I haven't found it to be a major concern.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,453
thanks. I knew one had a wider viewing angle, just could not remember which one. Most of our seating is at some angle from the set, so that can be important.

given the current price differentials, I am starting to think Plasma might be the way to go.

Now, see? I wouldn't complain that it wasn't offered to me first.... Of course back then if my dad found there was a Masters ticket to be had he'd have swiped it from his loving son....

Plasma vs LED. Our plasma is in a bright room and there's a bit of an issue but out plasma is 5 years old. No doubt they are much better. We have some minor issues of the older, far more costly, technology of 5 years ago. A little burn in that I didn't notice at all until my 9 year old did (thanks a lot, kid!) and some issues that are no doubt related to that whole 60hz vs 120hz thing...

That’s the way Son #1 is thinking.

He has a 10 year old 36 inch JVC CRT monster that now takes a real imagination to see colors. When he looked at the prices of the different types out there he figures why not go with the plasma it’s a lot cheaper than an LCD or an LED. I don’t know what’s taking him so long. I doubt that it’s the money and anything is better than what he has in his family room now.

This is a really good article that summarizes which is better, LCD or Plasma TVs.
    compare LCD Plasma TVs

In these tests the Plasma won by 6 points to 7. They are pretty close though, and I still like the lighter weight of an LCD, just easier to hang on a wall and bring it home, and since it works simpler it will probably laqst longer...in the article they calculate at 4 hours a day it should last 68 years.

Although plasma has better blacks, better angle coverage, better for sports, I like the simplicity and lighter weight of LCDs. And I have seen and heard of pixel burnout in plasmas, so that is a negative for me.

They are close, so it is just your personal preference and how important that extra good picture means to you.

    Color Accuracy

    Viewing Angle

I had issues early on our plasma but it was connectors and they fixed it under warranty. This was a Toshiba 50". We've never had a pixel burn out in 5 years. Am planning that by the time this one outlives it usefulness they will be giving these things away when you buy a full tank of gas. Hey, it happened with pocket calculators!

Our attorney has calmed our fears regarding the "attitude" element of the speeding ticket experience. He said that a remark regarding my wife's attitude will be noted in a box on the officer's report---not available on our citation copy. He said that, in our county at least, the box comment never comes up for discussion. This is because on those court dates they have as many as 500 to 1,000 tickets to dispose of in court. Even if it did come up for discussion, it would only mean an increase in the fine of $75. He said that he has never had that to happen.

As for the unsigned registration card, he takes a copy of it which we have now signed to show the court. They simply dismiss that particular citation. No court cost involved for that one.

As for the speeding ticket of 48 in a 35 zone, he plans to have it reduced to "improper equipment". He says that this is a fairly common procedure which will result in no points to the license and no increase in our insurance. Without it, our insurance would increase by $500 per year for a period of three years. This will save us $1,500.

Cost of this experience: Fine: $30, Court costs: $175, Reduction to improper equipment: $75, Attorney fee: $100 (because we are regular clients of his law firm). Total package: $380. Paying this price is still cheaper than the $1,500 in insurance cost, plus the two points are not added to her license. The court date is June 3rd. I'll let you know if it all goes according to plan. He has saved my neck twice. We'll see if he can pull this off again.

    "...Attorney fee: $100..."

That's pretty cheap for getting a lawyer to show up in court. You must be a regular criminal enterprise to get rates like that.

Still, I could do it for you cheaper. Over the years I have become quite the Clarance Darrow of traffic court while getting my kids out of various scrapes.

Almost always the court will "deal" to get a guilty plea. Speeding becomes a no point "parking on the pavement" with little effort. It's a money game and everybody knows the rules.

I would be willing to take your case for $50 plus airfare and beer.

He has saved my neck twice.

Good to hear you’ll be getting some help. Now all you need is a “cable guy” to get the 46 inch TV that you want into your cabinet opening because you will probably need help with that.

I just have this reoccurring image of you going to work on your computer trying to remove the monitor cable.

    Something like this:
You’re standing with one foot on the computer the other firmly on the floor, monitor cable wrapped around one wrist and being held with a death grip by both hands, flexing slightly at the knees, gritting your teeth while squinting, taking a deep breath, looking around to see if anyone is watching, then quickly straightening your legs while yanking on the cable. POW, the cable is loose and so are a few panels and other parts of your computer. Initially you’re standing there with a look of confusion but somehow you convince yourself that you accomplished your mission. That feeling doesn’t last long when you notice circuit boards all over the place and a few pock marks in the walls that will require spackling as a result of ricocheting computer parts. You now go into the formulating stage of preparing an excuse for what happened. Just then Mrs. Richard rushes into the room to see what’s going on and she has this horrified look on her face but leaves the room quickly before she says something a lot worse than what she said to the cop that gave her a ticket.

Man…I don’t think I’ll ever get that image out of my head.

Excellent....that sounds better than an episode of Judge Judy. What does "improper equipment" mean....that your speedometer doesn't work properly?

A great lawyer too, at only $100 a pop! Hope that guy isn't retiring any time soon, he's worth his weight in gold.

Hope it all goes through ok. It is too bad if descent law abiding people don't get a break for a moments lapse of good judgement. I am sure it wouldn't happen again, the lesson has been learned. It is kind of refreshing that your wife just went with what she thought.....unlike the smooth talker that could finess his way around the officer.

Went to 3 graduation ceremonies in 2 days.
    First outside 'general graduation'.
Next day graduation for one school in the morning, then another one for another school in the afternoon.
It reminded me of birthday parties when the kids were young; a neighborhood/school kids party, a dance kids party, and a family party.

When I got back, I had a letter from Sirius congratulating my new car. :surprise:

Thanks for the very comprehensive article about the various technologies.

I'm not going to argue with the laboratory test equipment used to grade these technologies and I've already said that the picture on the LCD's, LED's and plasma's all looked good to me when I saw them in the show room. Any of them should satisfy most people.

very comprehensive article about the various technologies.

You're very welcome. I liked that article because it was written in a way that almost every one could understand. Since about 8% of males are color blind I doubt if the difference matters much to them. Unless I am watching sports or a really good movie I don't bother changing to HD. I think most people wouldn't notice the difference between the two technologies. Even the article said each had it's advantages and disadvantages, with plasma slightly ahead.

In the showroom they usually have the highest definition DVDs playing...cartoons come out looking really good......so I don't know if that's even much of a real test.

Years ago (not sure if this exists today) the next best thing was to donate to the policeman’s ball or some other law enforcement organization. Then prominently display the decal furnished for this donation on the rear window or bumper.

In the mid 70’s I had a friend who had a ’68 Vette who thought this decal gave him Cart Blanche protection and it did until he was caught on radar doing 104 in a 60 MPH zone. When the chase car nabbed him about a mile down the road the cop said something like, “gee, fella do you have any idea of how fast you were going”? He said, “over 90 I know that but can’t you help me out here. Did you see what I have in the rear window”? The cop said “yeah, I’ll help you out, I’m gonna keep you out of jail. I’m writing you a ticket for going 75 in a 60 MPH zone (no points back then in PA). That’s the best I can do. My buddy up the road that got you on his radar won’t go for anything better than this. Please slow down, OK”.

He was really a good guy and an even better driver but he did like to open up his Vette when he got the chance. He did slow down some but every year he always got the newest edition of that window decal.

interesting thing on that here recently. My son got snagged in a cheesy trap last september up at school. Went to plea, and got it knocked down (still speeding, but less money/points). Threw in driver's school to take care of those, paid a couple hundred, and called it lesson learned.

So, he calls last week to tell me that he just got a letter from the court, telling him that the ticket never got filed with the city, so he could file to get his money (well, my money...) back! I assume that means the ticket gets taken off the books too, but I am still a bit fuzzy on the whole situation, and have not seen a copy of the missive he got.

would be nice to not have it officially lingering on the record. Insurance in NJ costs enough as it is.

"A great lawyer too, at only $100 a pop!"

Don't give my attorney too much credit. We paid him $3,000 last year to keep my BIL from stealing my wife's interest in the family farm in Alabama. We then paid him $900 to draw up our Wills. He told me this morning that the $100 fee to represent us regarding the speeding ticket was a courtesy to his regular clients. His normal traffic fee is $500. He is a Pinehurst attorney which equates to a "Philadelphia lawyer". I will say that he is very good at what he does.

"It is kind of refreshing that your wife just went with what she thought..."

My attorney thought the same thing because he says that everyone is fed up with these speed traps around the village. Three thousand people live in the village proper. The police department averages 90+ tickets per month using a force of 5 cops! Still, my wife says that she will never talk that way again.

Actually, I don't wear jeans. I wear cargo/bermuda shorts year round except for Sundays and when we go out for dinner at a nice restaurant. I do get a few looks in the dead of winter, but who cares? My legs never get cold, so I just wear a sweater and a coat with the shorts. kirstie...as you and your SO have found out, it's not the weight of these new big screens that is the big stumbling block, it's that they're unwieldy to mount because of their size.

I don't admit defeat easily, but I tried to wall mount my 50". Even with my son helping (coupled with my impatience), I finally gave up and bought a nice stand.

Didn't even attempt wall mounting on the 60".

Reminds me of a story ... I attended college in Arizona. My dad, who was working for the fire department, drove over in his official city vehicle to attend a conference. The city car had a plate similar to this:

Anyway, I was in the car with him one afternoon when he got pulled over. The cop said he pulled my dad over specifically because he'd never seen a plate like that. Once my dad showed him his badge (he was also a sworn peace officer), the cop let him go.

As many of you know, I've been looking for a decent sized SUV for my growing family. Features that are "must haves" include: 4WD (or AWD), Navigation, Bluetooth, a 3rd row seat that's not an afterthought, & above all else, the ability to carry 3 children in Child Safety Seats in the 2nd row. For those of you who snoozed through my posts, we decided on a 2011 Honda Pilot EX-L w/ NAV.

I started watching prices last month. I was virtually licking my chops at the fact that the Pilot is an SUV ($4+ per gallon), is 3 full model years old (current style dates back to 2009), and Honda was offering 1.9% Financing for 60 months (and it was only April). My original plan was to take my time & wait until September to see if Honda would throw some major cash incentives or 0% financing the Pilot's way.

May 6th rolled around and I saw that Honda's program had changed. 1.9% financing became 2.9% financing, so instead of sitting around I sprung into action.

My 1st stop was Honda of New Rochelle. They aren't the closest dealer to my home in Stamford, CT, but I was in the area and wanted to see what the Pilot drove like. I waited a few minutes and was greeted by a very well dressed salesman in his late 20's. He grabbed the keys to a Pilot, explained some of the vehicle's crucial safety features, and then asked if I wanted to bring my wife down to check it out (since I explained it would be her car). I said I needed to drive the Pilot to see if I liked it first. He took a copy of my license, grabbed a temporary tag, & off we went.

After the test drive he told me to bring my wife down on Saturday because that's when the managers make the best deals. He didn't take my contact information, or talk about price, but I did take his card. He also explained to me that NAV equipped cars are going to be hard to come by due to the fact that the navigation chips are made in Japan.

I followed up with him via email & asked what colors he had in stock of the EX-L w/ NAV Pilots. He said they had 3.

Stop #2 was Greenwich Honda. The closest Honda dealer to my house. My best friend had bought 2 Fits from this dealership + a few of his employees had also bought cars there. My best friend dealt with the Sales Manager.

I walk in and ask where Derek Jeter is (name changed intentionally as per our for TH regulations).

"I'm Derek Jeter. Can I help you?"

"Hi, my name is nyccarguy. Alex Rodriguez sent me over here."

"From the deli, right? I remember, he bought 2 Fits & a few of his employees bought cars from me as well. What can I help you with?"

    "I'm interested in a 2011 Pilot EX-L w/ NAV."

"Great, this is Mariano Rivera. He'll help you with anything you need."

My wife comes in with her Mom & my boys. He asks if we want him to come on the test drive with us.

    "Sure, why not?"

Test drive goes well. Guy asks about what we're driving now. He's impressed when I say Prelude.

We go back to his desk. He tells me Derek Jeter wants to give special pricing because I'm a referral customer.

MSRP on the vehicle is $38,375
Invoice on the vehicle is $34,827
Sale price of the vehicle is $35,577 ($750 over invoice)

"Thanks Mariano & Thank you Derek Jeter. I'll call you and let you know."

"Ok, the sooner the better. There's a growing supply problem."

So I wanted to check the price to see if that was indeed the right price for a 2011 Honda Pilot EX-L w/ NAV.

I called someone I do business with because he mentioned he knew someone at Yonkers Honda. Turns out he knows the owner & the guy is a golf buddy of his. The guy I do business with makes a call on my behalf.

I call the owner of the dealership who couldn't be a nicer, more genuine guy. Tells me that he knows he can't sell a car to everyone & that even if he doesn't have the car I want, that he can point me in the right direction. He checks inventory around the area & gives me a price. Pretty much the same price that the dealer in Greenwich gave me.

So I called up the salesman in Greenwich & gave him my credit card for a deposit & he took my credit app info over the phone.

I'm so excited we're getting a new Pilot!
