Mac24 - that's actually a fantastic idea, but where do you mount the iPad while driving?

Oh, there are any number of mounts out there. Probably the most common are the ones that attach by suction to the inside of the windshield and connect to the iPad via a stiff but flexible 'snake'.

Search eBay for 'iPad mount' and it'll bring more than you can shake a stick at. I'm not saying it's necessarily the best place to buy but you'll get a good idea of what's out there.

If you're thinking of buying an iPad remember that the 3G model (either 1 or 2) is the one with a built in GPS.

I had mine temporarily propped on the top of my dash and leaning against the windshield, which was the ideal position both for viewing and touching the screen.

Many built in nav systems are integrated into the lower middle of the dash area and you have to take your eyes from the road to view the screen, whereas I could easily see the iPad in my peripheral vision while still looking at the road. If I needed to glance at the screen when the voice prompt said there was turn coming I only had to alter my focus slightly.

FWIW the new iPad 2 has little apart from two low quality cameras to offer over the original.
I don't know if the offer is still running but I purchased mine from AT&T (ugh!) for $300 less than the equivilant iPad 2. It's the 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G model and the data plan has no contract; you activate it a month at a time when you need it, drop it when you don't, i.e. if you're at home with Wi-Fi.
There two data plans, 250MB for $14.99 or 2GB for $25, but you don't need either to use it for navigation.

I'm no Apple or Mac fan, but I'm very impressed with this device.

Keith, as usual, you are a jewel to do the necessary research. You hit just the right model number---UN46D6000 by Samsung. I found it, too, and it doesn't have the 3D feature which suits me fine. At BB, the price is $1,164. I checked HH Gregg, Sears, Target, and Amazon for the same model. All of those sites are $5 more at $1,169. There is a HH Gregg in Raleigh, Cary, and Apex---all about an hour from me. I could get it from one of those stores or have it sent to BB here. I was reading where Samsung is #1 in the ratings now. I think that i would like to try that brand. Again, thanks so much for going to the trouble to look around for me.

That sounds like a great idea, except that is a big item to have hanging off your windshield with a suction cup.

I used to be one of those "I'm never going to spend $2000 on a factory built in NAV system when I can use this hand held Garmin for $200.". Then I bought my wife's (soon to be my) Acura TSX w/ Technology Package. What a world of difference. Once you get used to it, there is no going back.

I'm enjoying your sales story about the Pilot. FWIW, my sister bought the 2011 EX-L with Nav. last month. She said that her Honda dealership in Greenville, NC had plenty to choose from on their lot. She and my BIL now own two Pilots and one Accord. They do love a Honda. Hopefully, you'll find one that you like.

we really like the picture on the fancy Sharp (the new one with yellow!) We were looking at the 52" version of this 46" one.

    http://www.hhgregg.com/ProductDetail.asp?SID=n&ProductID=73628#page

quite a bit cheaper than that Samsung. 42 13/64" wide, so better measure really closely.

and yes, there are issues with certain types of TVs only being in certain sizes.

I like HH Gregg now that we have them. Have never liked shopping at BB, but have gotten stuff there over the years.

1080p and 120hz is pretty much "state of the art".

Small correction. State of the art is now 240Hz.

I explained my limitation with only 43 inches of bookcase space.

TVs screens are measured diagonally, so though you have a 42 inch space, it will actually hold a larger screen TV.

Model numbers at stores such as Best Buy don't mean much in the real world. They have the manufacturer give them exclusive model numbers, so you can't compare model number for model number.

I will go out on a limb and say unless you are an avid TV watcher, the difference you will see between a 60 hz or a 120 hz is minimal and the difference you will notice in a 720p vs 1080p are also minimal for most situations. Should you buy the 120hz or 1080p? I would for a main TV because it probably has newer technology and slightly better picture in some situations, but if you are on a budget or say, just need a TV for a bedroom, 60 hz and 720p are probably fine.

Good article on 720p vs 1080p:

    >I could get it from one of those stores

You should call the store/stores to see if they have it on display and have it in stock. Because it's out of stock online, it's a popular model. The Gregg store can check stock at all the other area stores as well as their warehouse.

Double check the width and height specs to be sure it fits where you're going to put it.

Richard, you are on the right track. Since this TV is in your den and the one you watch the most, you should definitely go with the 1080 at 120hz. I think you will very much enjoy the nicer set.

The article Driver mentions is over two years old. Most better sets today over 40" are 1080. There is a big difference compared to 720, especially when watching HD content.

And Best Buy uses the same model numbers as everyone else.

Also, get the biggest set that will fit. I bought a 40" because I wanted a Sony and they didn't make a 42". Now I feel like I would have been smarter to buy a 42" as it would have just fit. I really miss those two extra inches. :P
  • tjc78tjc78 Member Posts: 17,019
You can go back and forth as much as you want about specs, etc. Personally I wouldn't buy a 60HZ set. The pixel lag on 60HZ sets is visible especially on certains programs such as a hockey game. The only thing I think we could all agree on, is....... I've never heard anyone say "I should have bought the smaller set".

Buy the biggest set your furniture (and budget) can take.

I agree.... for my main TV, I'd want 120hz and 1080p... Even if you don't need it now, you'll be set for a few years.. Blu-Ray movies is one technology that makes use of those features, now. LED or LCD? If you go with LCD, you'll be able to get under $1000, and likely won't give up much... LEDs, being newer, are more likely to have the 1080p and 120hz...

My 52" LCD measures just under 50" width, including the case... so, pay attention to actual width measurements of the flat-panel you are interested in... It's unlikely that a 46"diagonal will fit in a 43" space, but not impossible..

I totally agree with all you said. I'm not going with any thing less than 1080p/120Hz, and I want the biggest one that will fit my 43 inch space.

You're right about the model numbers. They were the same on all sights that I checked---BB, HH Gregg, Sears, Target, Amazon, etc. Also, as I told Tallman1 yesterday, I'll check out the Sony as well.

Keith and KYFDX are right. I'll have to check the specs carefully. With a 43 inch space, 42 and 13/64s is definitely a tight fit. Then again, it would be nice having a 46 inch viewing space.

And Best Buy uses the same model numbers as everyone else.

That might be a Canadian thing because it does happen here. Our competition laws aren't as strong, so I think these companies can make their own brands here. We have two major electronics stores, Best Buy and Futureshop, but they are both owned by Best Buy...so not really much competition.

Most better sets today over 40" are 1080. There is a big difference compared to 720, especially when watching HD content.

Our 50 inch Samsung in the livingroom was a top of the line set 3 years ago and has everything, cost about $3000 at that time. I rarely watch in HD because I have to look up where the stations are. I do watch sports in HD if I remember. I watch so few movies I couldn't care less.

The TV in the bedroom is also a 50 inch but it is an LG base model, also 3 years old and cost $900. Not nearly as good as the Samsung but adequate for putting me to sleep. Don't need anything better for a TV in the bedroom.

Speaking of cars - why do some people say they need the most powerful TV sets available, but they can't understand why you want more hp in your car? :P

The width on that Samsung is 42.9 in. ; height, 28.1 in.

If Mr. Richard didn't measure too closely, it should slide it at an angle and then rotate to be parallel to the front and still have a hairs width. If Richard measured getting 43 inches allowing a little extra room, like I would do when shopping, he should be okay.

I always actually try to measure the physical item I am buying if its going to be a tight fit. Its just too easy for someone entering the specs onto a sign to make a mistake.

I am with you on measuring the actual item on display in a store!!! Right.

I did check the specs on HH Gregg with the Samsung website. Same 42.9 in.

I like to be able to see the thing on display in the store and I like to take the remote control, figure out how to change the brightness, contrast, color, tint, etc., and modify them to see if they seem like they will suit my eye.

We have a Sony Bravo in the bedroom. Love the picture quality.

Sharp in son's bedroom. Love the picture quality. But they are different in their pictures.

I bought the Sony after trying to modify the brightness and contrast of some competing models in the HH Gregg store in a darkened area for viewing. I could see the wood grain in the floor on the UD FLyer's basketball game on the Sony and it didn't show up on the other two. This was over-the-air digital tv in the store.

Richard, I don't know if you have a "Costco" in your area but it is a great place to buy TV's. At one time their policy was, if it ever breaks, bring it back for a new one...no time limit. We took them up on that once after owning a Vizio for almost 3 years. Alas, they now have a time limit of 90 days, but still great prices, etc.

We own 3 Samsungs, and they have been trouble free. The newest one is "LED" and makes a great picture. One thing about LED's is that it even makes movies have a video tape look to them. It bothers some people but we like it.

    Good luck !

Costco - after 90 days the local store manager still has some wiggle room on accepting the set back. The reason they changed the bring it back anytime on electronics (it's still good on most other items in the store) was that people were upgrading on Costco's dime all the time. They'd return computers every six months.

Costco still double the manufacturer's warranty on everything. In my case that saved a bundle when the TV actually needed service.

I don't do anything where I have to transport a large object anymore. My TV weighs 126 pounds and I suspect moving that in is probably what set off my herniated cervical discs. Thanks to two long rounds with a physical therapist that is at least way better. Have to look for one of those "white glove" delivery services next time. There are enough of them.

Crap! The one that I want without 3D (UN46D6000) is 28.1 in. in height. My bookcase opening is only 27.5 in. in height. My width of 43.5 in. would have worked. Would you believe the one with 3D only has a height of 26 and 7/8 in.? What luck! I wouldn't mind paying more, but it's foolish to get 3D. With my eye condition, I can't watch it.

I'll either have to look at another brand or go down to the next size in Samsung. Oh well. I have plenty of time. There's no rush.

Since none of the 46 in. TV's will work in my space, I've decided to go with a 42 inch---made only by LG or Panasonic. Samsung and Sony only have 40 inch TV's before moving up to 46 in. The LG is $100 more than the Panasonic, so the price difference isn't that great. Both seem to have good ratings by consumers, so I'll just have to look at both brands and make a decision.

You guys have been great. Thanks so much for all of the advice,.

Would you believe the one with 3D only has a height of 26 and 7/8 in.?

There must be some law of physics that could predict that would happen. It is unfortunate that you got that close but just couldn't do it. How are you with sandpaper?

Actually, you might not want the TV to be too close to the edges as it might not allow for enough air circulation.....but I don't know if that is a factor...someone might want to comment.

Most of the name brands are probably fine if they have the features you want and if they fit in the space. Sharp and Hitachi have extra thin models that might translate into smaller frames all around.

Keep looking.....shopping is half the fun, and it gives us more sales stories.

Just read your post when I did mine. I wouldn't give up just yet.....check out the 42s but really, if you can find a 46 that fits you will really like it more.

Then again, whatever size you get....the next time you will want a larger one.

"...might not allow for enough air circulation..."

I did check on that while at the store. The sales lady said that it isn't a problem because, with the TV sets being so thin, you get plenty of air circulation from behind the set in the bookcase.

Yes, I'll keep looking before making a final decision. In fact, I could do the bookcase over and buy myself a 60 inch.

I don’t know how to explain this but when something is going on with Richard, sooner or later it gets around to me.

Richard needs a dishwasher, I need a dishwasher. Richard gets shingles, I get a fungal infection. Richard has a TV go on the blink, I almost had the same.

    Here’s how mine went:

When I got home yesterday as we were preparing to go out for dinner Mrs. jmonroe said, “oh, BTW, the TV in the family room doesn’t work”. :surprise: I walk into the family room hoping that I don’t see a red light on like I saw when the lamp burned out at the end of last year. I was saved there, no red light. Now I’m thinking the cable box was turned off. She has bumped the button on the remote before and did this but not this time. Now I’m getting faint and itchy again. I turn off the FIOS cable box for about 30 seconds then on again but still no picture. The weird thing here is that when I push the remote OK button I get the pop up information box that displays the channel, what’s on, time duration of what’s on etc. but no picture. I know that this is a signal generated from the cable system and while it is not a video signal it at least told me that the TV could display video information if it received it. I proved this by turning on the DVD and had a perfect picture.

I’m feeling a lot better knowing that it isn’t the TV and now I’m hungry again and we are about to head out the door but I go back to the cable box which is the DVR type and pull the plug on it. When we return a couple hours later I plug it in, it goes through its warm up (showing different displays on the box itself) and when it’s finished doing all that, I hit the remote power button to turn on the TV and walla, I now have a perfect picture.

Do me a favor Richard, youv'e got to stop bringing your problems here, OK?

Richard…about the TV you want that is a scosh too high for your opening, don’t give up yet. You might be able to lower the TV on the stand that comes with it. I just looked at the 37 inch Toshiba we have in the office and by drilling two new holes in the base, the TV can be lowered ¾ inch. If this doesn’t work maybe removing the base altogether and setting it on a couple pieces of wood with slots cut in them to hold the bottom of the TV will work. It doesn’t have to be anything elaborate. Of course you’ll want to paint the wood glossy black to match the TV. Just something to consider.

    Just funnin'. :D

    Glad you're feeling better.

We got a 52 inch Sharp LCD back in January (Super Bowl discount season for TVs) for $950 and love it. I put son #3 and his wife, who are both avid and talented online shoppers, on the task of finding us a good TV for a good price, and they did. The guys here appear to be doing much the same for you. Many of the TVs are graded down for sound quality, but so long as you're going to use a separate receiver/theater sound system it's irrelevant.

None of this stuff is really off-topic. Nowhere does it say "Stories from the Car Sales Frontlines," now does it?

    No, we know better! :P

By the way, Jmonroe mentioned putting blocks on the wall. That made me think a wall bracket installed in the bookcase might allow you to mount the TV

That way you wouldn't need the base and that could make the height lower. This would only work if you were planning on using the base.

I have the older one with the clock on the front.

What is the advantage of the newer small Motorola box? If it has a way of dumping what is taped on the DVR to a DVD without having to watch what is being recorded, I could be interested. I'm sure there is a way to do it with the box I have but when the guy installed the FiOS system, just a little over 2 years ago, he said you can't do it. I could do it when I had Comcast via an additional cable to the TV.

I never chased this down but there are too many connectors on my box that aren't being used so there must be a way. :confuse:

I'm not really sure what the benefits are. It is smaller, and has a faster processor in it. Beyond that? No idea.

I didn't even know you could dump DVR recordings with an old comcast box, but I can't imagine you can't do the exact same with this? Comcast had the same box we have now for the longest time.

Sounds like another opportunity for Richard to be creative with duct tape ! :)

    Several options here:

    1. Throw the base away. Duct tape directly to bottom of bookcase.

    2. For more stability, also attach duct tape to sides.

    3. Suspend with duct tape straps from top of cabinet. A small amount of twisting is OK because it promotes air circulation.

I better stop here before I get sued by Jeff Foxworthy.

    >Yes, I'll keep looking before making a final decision. In fact, I could do the bookcase over and buy myself a 60 inch.

My thinking after noting that height is varied for a 46 in and 46 in with 3D is that the height of the STAND holding the screen may be the variation. If I were interested in the standard LED, I would look at the stand snap in setup on the 3D version and the non-3D version at the store. Perhaps the snap in is the same, but the shorter height of the 3D's stand holding the non-3D screen would allow you to fit in the brand an unit which you desire.

If I get time, I'll stop by the local hh Gregg and see if they have both Samsung sets on display. At worst you might have to buy a replacement stand piece fromt the 3D model to use with the non-3D version. At best, the sales person might swap the stand from the display model for the one with your non-3D screen.

You are forever thinking of solutions to problems. You must have been your employer's dream at work. Then again, that can be a problem. I had one superintendent who loved my creative ideas; another boss didn't want me thinking outside of the box. That is a very good idea about checking on switching the stands. I also have a wild idea that I'll mention later after some investigation. If I reveal it now, posters will think that I have lost my mind. Thanks so much for making the suggestion.

To Houdini: Thanks for the duct tape idea. Upon reflection, I don't think that it would lend itself to our decor. :D

To Jmonroe: Your hammer suggestion brought back the most wonderful memory. It was Christmas and I was in the 3rd grade. My mother kept complaining to my father that the Christmas tree in the den was crooked. Though he tried numerous times to get it right, it would still lean to the right. This was in the days when people used cross pieces of wood for a tree stand. While my mother was out shopping, my faher decided to solve the problem in a drastic way. He got the tree straight and then hammered a large nail through the tree stand right into the hardwood floor! My mother had a duck fit when she returned home and discovered what he had done. Still, we did have a very nice looking straight tree that year. It has always been one of those wonderful family stories that we tell each Christmas. It still brings tons of laughter at the dinner table. As for the TV stand, I am as dangerous with a hammer as I am with a computer cord. I don't think that I had better try that solution. :P

    Happy Mother's Day to all.

"I don't know how to explain this but when something is going on with Richard, sooner or later it gets around to me."

If your tag name on Edmunds wasn't the same as my real name, you might be able to avoid some of these problems. Perhaps you need a new tag name. :P

Thanks for the tip regarding the TV stand. I'll investigate. Glad that you were able to solve your TV problem. I hate to bring my problems here, but you guys have such good advice and ideas---and no servcie call fees! :D :P :shades:

I better stop here before I get sued by Jeff Foxworthy.

I wouldn't worry about Jeff Foxworthy, I would worry about Red Green getting the boys from the Possum lodge after you.

Sounds like another opportunity for Richard to be creative with duct tape !

You could buy him this book for him. One of the reviews of the book says:
the Duct Tape Guys, tackle anything and everything, from lowering receding hairlines to lowering the national debt, armed with just one tool in their toolbox: a roll of duct tape

As we're leaving our village to dine out last night, my wife gets a speeding ticket---first one in years. (Keep in mind that we have speed traps all over the village. We're notorious for them around the area.) It turned out to be a most unpleasant experience. The conversation goes somethng like this:

Cop: May I see your driver's license and registration?

Wife: I'm getting tired of all of these damn speed traps around the village.

Cop: Mrs. R., do you realize that you were going 38 in a 35?

    Wife: So what? That's nothing.

Cop: You then speeded up to 48. Did you know that?

Wife: Yes, because i left the 35 zone.

Cop: No, you didn't. It's still 35 in this area.

Wife: Your department is ripping off the citizens in the village. (I'm trying to keep my mouth shut.)
Cop: Have you had a ticket here before?

Wife: Certainly not. This burns me up!

Cop: How long have you lived in the village?

Wife: Five years, but that has nothing to do with this and, in fact, is none of your business. (I'm screaming inside at this point.)
Cop: Wait here. I'll be back in a minute.

    He comes back.

Cop: Mrs. R. I'm giving you a ticket for going 48 in a 35. I'm also giving you a citation because your registration card isn't signed. The law says that it must be signed.

Wife: You just love sticking it to a woman, don't you? (I'm having a heart attack at this point!)

Cop: Mrs. R., if you had been more pleasant when I stopped you, you would have gotten just a warning.

Wife: Your mother didn't do a very good job, did she? (Just call me an ambulance!)

Cop: Have a nice evening and keep it down.

My wife then makes a u-turn in the road in front of him! Thank goodness he let that one pass! I ask my wife where she is going. She says, "Home! Who could enjoy eating out now?"

We ended up having soup and a sandwich. Heavenly days. What a terrible evening. My wife is usually a very kind, soft spoken lady. Something about her pride was injured when she got stopped. That conversation with the cop will cost me about $300 because I will have to see our attorney tomorrow. Moral of this story: Don't mess with a senior citizen, especially a female one.

This test is fun if you liked cars from the 50s!

    Do you know your cars

I printed my score because I am so proud of myself:

You got 98% (47 right out of 48). The average score is 73%

Oh man, that was sad but hilarious. I knew it was coming. Remember, I was stopped twice in February. I was so nice, didn't raise my voice, acted with much remorse, was very low key, and made it sound reasonable why I did what I did. The 2nd time my wife said you are becoming an expert at this.

I have a new business idea.....call me when you get stopped, I will listen in and tell you wexactly what to say to the cop. I am getting good at it.

There isn't much of an excuse for speeding, so your only hope is to be very agreeable and say you will be more careful in the future....and accept full responsibility. But, guaranteed, once it escalates...you can't possibly win.

Has anyone ever used a cable card instead of a cable box?

I'd love to find a new TV that had that slot so I wouldn't have to have a cable box below it.

    >Cop: Mrs. R., if you had been more pleasant when I stopped you, you would have gotten just a warning.

I love the quote, "Cop: Mrs. R., if you had been more pleasant when I stopped you, you would have gotten just a warning. "

Surely there are superiors of his who would love that quote.
