Nothing wrong with a little hard work, is there? In this economy, it's nice to have a secure job where you HAVE the ability to work hard, and have enough work coming in to keep you busy.

How big are you going? If you are going to something like a 60" Plasma would be the way to go. My GF's mother has a few year old Panasonic 60" plasma and that is one hell of a set (that was fun to wall mount, btw)
If going for 46-50 I think I would look at something that is LED. They are thinner and (if you care) use less power. As for brands, I am sure you could go crazy and read countless reviews and everywhere you go, you will find a bad review. IMO you can't go wrong with Sony or Samsung. I have a smallish Vizio in my bedroom and have no complaints either. Just make sure that whatever you get it is 1080P and at least 120HZ.
something about 50". I am not fond of plasma. heavier, and my wife does not like the shine!
from poking around at HH Gregg, the nicest looking one 9to us) was the new Sharp. they had a 52" LED quattron (1080p, 120 hz, built in wifi) that had a real nice picture. the sony's always look good too. LED seems to run a couple hunderd $ more than LCD, but seems to be worth it.
We have a plasma and I'd go LED next time around. Ours is a Toshiba that needed work within the first two years. Fortunately I bought it at Costco so they doubled the warranty.

I think so. I just got a new monitor at work and it is LED. Really nice unit, runs cool too, virtually no heat from it at all.
50" is a good size. I have a 50" upstairs and a 60" in the basement. For most viewing the 50" works out great. The only time I wish I had gone bigger is if I am at the dining room table which is on the opposite end of the 28' living/dining room
I have a Toshiba 50 in Plasma which I bought 5 or 6 years ago when they were over $3k. Turns out it was a good purchase as it has 1080p and HD even though we didn't know what it was back then. You won't need HD with Plasma.
50 inches is a good size and has saved us hours of driving and gas as our relatives come here for all the big sporting events. (even though Steelers lost to Green Bay and we had GB fans in our audience).
I agree with 60" plasma. :P Panasonic and Samsung are the top 2.
Check out the professional reviews, too. Just browsing the showrooms is not usually a good indication of how a TV will perform in your living room. Which tech is the way to go is constantly bouncing back and forth as improvements are made. Plasma seems to be the frontrunner at the moment.
Actually, for a budget shopper, CNET ranks a Vizio 55" LED as, I believe, the 3rd best TV on the market. Costco carries it for around $1200. The aforementioned Samsung and Panasonic are numbers 1 & 2.

Very true. One thing many people don't realize is that the TV's factory color settings are usually very bright to stand out in stores with bright lighting. One of the first things to do with a new set is to back down the contrast and brightness settings. This will ensure a more natural picture.
If the set has a "pro" or "movie" preset these are usually pretty good. It may look a little dark at first, but is much better than "out of the box"
I doubt that whatever attaches the handle to the flapper are "wires", like in "electrical" because these wires would then be immersed in water. They are probably something that only looks like wires but are just a mechanical linkage from the handle to the flapper.
I've always thought of 'wire' or 'wires' as a description of many other types of product in addition to the kind that are designed to carry a current.
For instance, fencing wire, baling wire, safety wire, piano wire, etc. It's likely these were thin rods, but of course the point at which a rod becomes thin enough to be described as a wire is open to debate also.

The key here is that the word "wire" is used with the description of the item being identified like, "fencing wire".
Futhermore, I was considering the source that made the "wire" comment and the possibility of the Canadian language barrior here. :confuse:

Thank you for asking. I'm much better. My appetite has returned to normal now that the meds are finished. The rash is still there but is beginning to fade. The pain lasted about two weeks, so I must have gone to the doctor in time for the meds to take quicker action. I am now left with one side effect. The meds were so strong and I ate so much food that a few of my taste buds erupted on my tongue leaving some bumps. They are a minor inconvenience which, according to the doctor, should disappear in about another ten days. I was more fortunate than many folks who have shingles. I didn't have to suffer one or more months with it. Thanks again.
Yeah - normal prednisone stuff. I assume you followed the doctor's orders on tapering off the stuff. Quitting is suddenly is very much not recommended.
Glad to hear you are on the mend.

Sounds like you got a good deal. I checked my records. We did about 1,300 SF in hardwood plus three rooms of carpet. That would explain my figure of $13,500. We did the remainder of the house in tile. I know you'll love the finished product. Keep us posted.
One thing great about hardwood floors other than the always interesting graining, is that you can easily change the look of a room by changing an area rug.
2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
I really want to kick myself in the rear for not refinishing the oak hardwood throughout my house. When I bought the place I pulled up the old rugs and decided to put rug down again. I paid over $3500 for the carpet, probably wouldn't have been much more to refinish the floors. Dumb move on my part. The carpet I put in is wearing like iron so the inner cheapness in me just can't pull it up until it starts to look shabby.
approach being ancient as blow past it, I note the validity of the "whatever is old is new again" concept.
Hardwood floors were all I saw in Colorado as a child in new (moderately upscale) construction. Great big 45-degree angle-hammering devices stitching the strips to the subfloor, followed by collosal belt sanders and 2-3 days of finishing. Standard stuff, back in the day.
Then came wall-to-wall carpet, followed by ceramic tile escalating in size to approximately the size of a card table (remember those?), followed by laminated faux hardwood flooring, followed by old-school strip-nailed real hardwood floors.
Stand by for the return of wall-to-wall carpet. They'll call it something different, and the lemmings will pay dearly for it.
I think refinishing runs maybe $2.50 or so per SF. so really not bad since you get essentially brand new floors.
2/3 of the house is done, and the change is shocking. It looks like a different house, and bigger since the LR, foyer and DR now flow into each other (instead of being chopped up with different flooring).
can't wait to see the last room (the FR in the back) done also, and the furniture back in place. Absolutely worth the money, and a huge improvement over new carpet (the old stuff had gotten nasty).
we have already bought some new area rugs. Hope they match!
just not looking forward to moving back in everything we moved out (except all the crap that should have been gone already). the garage is stuffed, and the basement is a disaster area!

My wife didn't marry me because of my handyman skills. Here is the 1st definition of wire I found: wire (wr) n. 1. A usually pliable metallic strand or rod made in many lengths and diameters, sometimes clad and often electrically insulated, used chiefly for structural support or to conduct electricity.
Probably a DIYer would think of electrical wire when the word wire is used, but to me, anything made of metal that is thin and can be bent is also a wire...and it isn't a Canadian thing! :confuse:
I didn't have to suffer one or more months with it.
Glad you had a rather quick recovery. The fellow I know had it for almost 2 months now and it got into his eye which is very painful. Also picked up pneumonia, probably from lack of resistance. It's too bad because he loves to play tennis but can't even leave his house for 2 months now.
"...(except all the crap that should have been gone already.)
This is a great opportunity to clean out that"stuff" that you and I talked about earlier. The hard part is talking your wife into it. :P My wife is going out of town on the 11th for four days. I'll have to see how much Ii can throw out wihtout being discovered too soon.
I'm so sorry to hear that your friend is still suffering. Having it in his eye is so dangerous. A friend of ours had it there. She finally had to have two eye surgeries. It was a horrible experience for her. Yes, my wife and I do intend to get the vaccine. I'll wait a bit until my immune system is stronger. I hope that I never have to go through this again.
problem here is, usually if she goes off alone, it is back to the old homestead, and she brings back more crap!
but we are (my condition for doing it) thinning out the overload of furniture and crap, at least on this floor. After that, I have to reclaim the basement.
she has been better lately about actually letting go of some stuff. Hopefully another neighborhood garage sale comes soon, and we will get a load together for good will.
I'd go with a 50" Panasonic plasma. I started out looking a LCD/LED sets and after much research and auditioning I went with plasma sets in both installations. The best plasmas are still the Pioneer Kuro Elites, but they have been out of production for a couple of years. In my opinion the Panasonics are the best sets on the market. I have a small 42" Panasonic in my basement 5.1 system and it does a fine job.

That explains it. I have a friend, after high school he went to a community college and took electrical engineering. When he graduated he went to a big plant (manufacturing not a garden type) to get a job. He took the test. He asked if he got the job and they said no, there is no way we can let you work on electical equipment, you are color blind.
You would think they would have found that out at the college!
He actually got a very good job in a very different career.....funny how life works!
Hey nycguy....you didn't comment on my Kohler post 67474.
You're too busy driving around in your Prelude and your new raise. Now you could sell the Prelude and pay off the Acura in half the time.
That's what we did, sold our son our Volvo for a bargain basement $3000. Then he sold it to a friend and made a $2000 profit. If we knew he was doing that we would have sold it for $5k!
Yes, the package was designed for tapering off the Prednisone---final day only required one pill. I hate Prednisone---too many side effects.
That sounds like the 6 day Pred Pac (4 MG pills each, I think) that I was on at first for my fungal infection, where you take less pills each day as the week goes on, until one pill the last day. It seemed to help but like I said when I finished it my itch returned. I was then prescribed Pred 20 MG pills twice a day for 5 days, then one per day for the next 5 days. Wow, I did that for 2 days but stopped the second pill; it was keeping me up at night. However, I did not have the appetite problem that you had with the Pred. Mine stayed normal.
FWIW, I go back to the derm tomorrow because that is the end of the 10 day high dose Pred regimen and he wants to see me then. The itch is still not completely gone but it’s much better. The up side is that I didn’t need a jack to lift the car when I rotated my tires and I seem to be holding my own a little better when dealing with Mrs. j.

Since we are discussing TV's, here's a question for the technical among you. My flat screen LED TV has recently developed five vertical lines on the right side of the screen about two inches apart. They take up half of the viewing space, but you can still watch a program. Each line appears to be a different color---dark red, blue, green, and two black ones. Any solutions on fixing this, or do I need to replace this four year old set? I hate to pay a large service fee just to find out that I need a new TV.
I go back to the doctor tomorrow as well. Hope we both get good reports. As for the up side in dealing with Mrs. J., I was not as fortunate. Mrs. R. said that I was a terrible patient---ill tempered as hell. She's leaving next week for a four day trip with her girlfriends---to get some relief.
My flat screen LED TV has recently developed five vertical lines on the right side of the screen about two inches apart.
It sounds like a horizontal sweep problem. If the information (video signal) can’t be swept horizontally across the screen properly some of it is lost which creates vertical lines where this signal is missing.
I hate to pay a large service fee just to find out that I need a new TV.
I hate to be the one to say this but it probably isn’t worth fixing unless you buy the board/s yourself. Given that you have problems with external cables that leaves you out.

I second Jmonroe on this. It sounds bad.... but just a quick question.
Does it do it on all sources? If you play a DVD instead of watching cable does it go away?
If it doesn't then at least you know its the set.
One other to try just as shot in the dark, try unplugging the set to "reset" it. Every once in a while my set will turn on with no picture, unplug and then plug it back in and all is well.
With LED, your choices are generally limited to 46/47 or 52... Almost all of the 50" sets are plasmas...
We have a 52" LCD in the lower level.. a 36" tube Sony upstairs.. Hopefully, that will be replaced with a 46/47" LED before too long.. darn thing won't die...

Years ago this problem kept many a guy from working for the telephone company. Of course today, with fiber optics, it might not be as much of a problem.
He actually got a very good job in a very different career.....funny how life works!

install finished right on time at noon today. Totally blown away by how good it looks. Honestly looks like a different house (the nice new paint job in the living room, replacing the dirty green doesn't hurt either!). And I am sure that I added more equity than what I paid for the job.
Biggest problem is that it makes the kitchen look even more dingy and outdated than it already did!
Well, as an old professor once told me: "Yes, I do have a lot of college degrees but I'm not stupid".
Extra sheepskins are not always the answer and are best when being applied to the particular field for which they were obtained. It seems like most everyone today has advanced degrees. I have a measly one but both of my sons have more wallpaper. In fact, Son #1 has two masters and his wife has one. There are enough degrees in that house to burn it down but when I see some of the things that go on there it appears to me that only the dog and the kids have working brains.
Most of the time they get it right and that’s why I’m so surprised to see some of the things they do. I’m not very good at biting my tongue so we do have our discussions.

To you and jmonroe: Thanks for the advice. Yes, the lines are still there with a DVD. Also, the unplug didn't work---still the lines are there. Could it have anything to do with the exterior wiring for our Dish Network server? The other three TV's in the house don't have this problem. Do I need to think of heading out to the stores? This TV is in the den and is watched the most. It is an LCD 32 inch flat screen. The bookcase that I had built when we bought the house will hold a 42 inch. I should have had the opening made bigger. Still, a 42 inch is fine with us. BTW, when I unplugged the TV I was careful not to yank on the cord. Help!
You are so right. I have plenty of wallpaper, plus tons of plaques and awards. None of those prevented me from tearing up a perfectly good computer. As you said, the degrees are best applied to what one knows. As my father used to say, "An education is not a substitute for common sense." Boy, have I learned that the hard way!
"Biggest problem is that it makes the kitchen look even more dingy and outdated than it already did!"
That's the only thing about renovations. One thing leads to another.
I'm so glad that you are pleased with the floors. Don't they make a world of difference? You're right about the equity. You can always get your money back out of hardwood floors---as well as kitchen make-overs. Enjoy.
we already had a designer out. Just waiting to see the design, and find out the cost! The contractor already knows the kitchen (same guy coming in 2 weeks to do the laundry room). Someone is going to get rich off of me it seems.
Though depending on the cost, it may have to wait a while (the kitchen piece).
Could it have anything to do with the exterior wiring for our Dish Network server? The other three TV's in the house don't have this problem.
Maybe there is hope for you yet.
These cable boxes can do wacky things and I should have mentioned this before. So, move the problem TV to a room where the TV is working correctly. That could be your problem although getting the same results when using the DVD pretty much proves a bad set but it’s worth a shot.
If by chance it is the cable set up, hammer on the cable guy and let him know you almost bit the bullet and bought a TV for no good reason. Then negotiate a free months service for the scare it gave you.
Good luck,

In asking who was the best electronics manufacturer, the response was National.
When I asked who they were, the reply was "in America they are known as Panasonic".

The up side is that I didn’t need a jack to lift the car when I rotated my tires and I seem to be holding my own a little better when dealing with Mrs. j.

And here I am still plodding along doing what I went to school for. But I do hang out with a pretty nice bunch here.

As they say, “when a plan comes together it was worth the effort and usually the expense”.
Enjoy it. Now onto the kitchen before you forget how to make plans work.

That's the only thing about renovations. One thing leads to another.
I'm so glad that you are pleased with the floors. Don't they make a world of difference? You're right about the equity. You can always get your money back out of hardwood floors---as well as kitchen make-overs.

Though depending on the cost, it may have to wait a while (the kitchen piece).

Good luck,
