Wife: You just love sticking it to a woman, don't you? (I'm having a heart attack at this point!)

Man, I would have had one too but it's unlikely that a cop could pull over Mrs. j when I'm in the car because she refuses to drive when I'm in the car. I have no idea how she would act when she isn't with me but at least my heart rate wouldn't change.

Cop: Mrs. R., if you had been more pleasant when I stopped you, you would have gotten just a warning.

We discussed this before...there is no way you can win a road argument with a badge.

Has anyone ever used a cable card instead of a cable box?

I'd love to find a new TV that had that slot so I wouldn't have to have a cable box below it.

When I was about to buy my first HD TV in January of 2005 I thought I'd like this feature too and I'm pretty sure my Sony has it but if you go this route you will need your own DVR if you want to record (I don't have one) so that DVR cable box is what I needed and I found out that you won't get the cable line up menu either which I didn't think was a big deal but now that I have the cable box I'm spoiled. So I don't want to be without it now.

Yes, you have to pay for this every month but since I don't have a box that will do the same things, I'm at the mercy of the cable outfit, which if I'm all that upset about, I can always put an antenna on the roof but that ain't gonna happen.

Isell sent that test to me. My score was the same as yours. I missed one of the hood ornament questions. I, too, was proud of my score. Some of my friends got less than half correct.

You are going to have a heck of a time when you go to court for that ticket. When people start raising their voices or become belligerent during a traffic stop, most Officers make a point of writing down the incident and keep it as a record for when they go before the Judge. All of my Police Officer friends do this, and it usually never goes well in Court for the defendant when the Judge finds out what happened.

Its hard to keep in perspective that sometimes an Officer is just doing their job as well. They have superiors to answer to at work, just like we often do. Speed traps are often not the choice of Officers either, it is their supervisors and city officials who make the decision.

Bottom line for the class? Unloading on an Officer accomplishes nothing. No one likes to be disrespected at work, and even if you don't agree, their wide discretion means you should leave your arguments for the Judge.

When I first got my 50" Sony cable cards were a new "thing". I too wanted it, as I really didn't want to make room for the cable box. Well, Comcast tried to steer me away saying about how I wouldn't get the on screen guide, "on demand" etc.

I pretty much demanded it. They sent a tech out and then another and then another..... they could never get it to work. Needless to say, I ended up with an HD DVR and I think I ended up with a month or two free service from all the trouble.

If I am not mistaken, I don't think cable card slots are even being included in the newer sets.

Richard, sorry about your wife's run in with the "law". She broke the #1 rule of a traffic stop, which is to be nice. Hopefully, you can get it reduced to a no-point violation and just pay the fine so your insurance premiums don't go up.

If I reveal it now, posters will think that I have lost my mind.

Like we don't think so now? :D

You will hate to hear this but last weekend I got pulled over for the first time in years. Get the requisite papers and such and the cop asks the old "do you know why I pulled you over?" and I reply no. I have no idea. He says I made a right turn at a light where there was a no turn on red sign. I say "I'm sorry. I missed it." He says it happens a lot at that intersection which was why he was there and then says I'm going to check your license but if it's OK I'll just give you a verbal warning." Back on the road as quickly as I typed this. Sorry, Richard.....

On the quiz - Richard had already sent it to me. I got somewhere around where you guys got despite a major bozo miscue that had to be a typing error - I got the 55 and 56 Chevies backward. I know better.

Tough day today. Still pulling things out of the folks house which is now under the new ownership. The new owner, who had said so much how he liked everything in it has already gutted the kitchen that hadn't changed much in my lifetime. I do wish we had held off closing until we were done with things. My brother the lawyer says no problem. Don't believe lawyers.....

Surely there are superiors of his who would love that quote.

I have known more than my far share of police officers. I do know that in most cases an offocer has a lot of leeway in issuing a ticket. i would say most superiours would have agreed with him.

I know and agree with all you say. When I get stopped, I am always very polite. If our attorney can't get this reduced, we'll just have to pay the price. If I had opened my mouth during the process, things would have just been worse. There was no way that I was going to add fuel to the fire.

I am well aware of the fact that having her say will come with a price tag. It is also a little embarrassing when I remember that it was the Police Officers Association who gave me $5,000 when I ran for city council. I'll have to make amends in more places than just the court. My wife is very remorseful today, but that doesn't correct the situation. It is just another episode in life with which we must deal. It's not the first, and it won't be the last.

Exactly; you will never win an argument with a LEO when you are stopped on the side of the road. There is a box on the Uniform Citation marked "ATTN"- when our officers check that box it means that they want input into any plea bargain.

I was in the passenger seat one day a long time ago with a friend driving. he got pulled over and as the officer was walking up to the car he looked at her and exclaimed "You're a woman". At that point I knew he was going to get a ticket.

1)Giving you a pass on sight/site, I will give your wife a pass on the ticket. (I don't think the court will.) Oh, I know, posting it here negates any 'pass'.

    2) Changing the entertainment center from 42 inch to 60 inch. In support of the statement from someone "Never heard anyone say 'Wish I had bought the smaller one.'", I almost recommend that you do this. But, if you had a problem switching a video cable, I really, really worry about your carpentry skills being up to making this change.

Surprised you didn't say, no I am a masochist, I really deserved a ticket.

a major bozo miscue that had to be a typing error - I got the 55 and 56 Chevies backward.

It happens easily. The Fords and Chevs are easier than Dodges, Chryslers and Desotos. If you got it a few months ago why didn't you pass it on?

Sounds like my wife. If there are several homes available all the same she likes the one in worse shape or that hasn't been updated. Then she can do a lot more to it herself. The more decorating they have done the less she likes it.

My dear fellow, allow me to put your mind at ease. I would never attempt such a feat. After 14 houses, I have learned to keep five people on retainer: carpenter, electrician, plumber, landscaper, and attorney.

Thank you for the pass on "sight/site". To err is human; to forgive is divine.

As for your pass on the ticket, we'll leave that one in the hands of the attorney. As long as no prison time is involved, we can deal with it.

Nice to have a test when being 60+ is a big help.

Yes it is but I didn’t follow the rule about multiple choice tests like this one, “when in doubt, make all the answers the same”. As a result I blew one section completely. Of course when I was in the Navy if we had a multiple choice test, or question on a test, if you followed that rule you failed the test outright. So maybe they worked that rule out of me or I subconsciously had a flashback and didn’t do that.

The section I missed was identifying the ’52 De Soto, Henry J, Kaiser and Willys. I got the De Soto and Henry J correct at first but I got greedy and changed them and then I got all of them wrong. I also failed the second rule, “if not sure, leave it the way you had it first”.

I stopped at the local BadBoy (BB, Best Buy) store and checked the heights and stands on Samsung. They had the non-3D version in LED in 46 in. That is BIG in my book. I noticed the picture was exceeding more clear than the plasma that was a couple down from it. I was stunned at the picture quality of the Samsung LED.

I didn't get to compare with the 3D version. Couldn't see one and didn't want to ask one of their youngsters roaming around.

    Richard, loved the story.

Hopefully your attorney can make it go away, but if not, take the sucker to court (nothing to lose at that point, right? Just have the wife dress up in classic old southern lady clothes (think Aunt Bee), right down to the hat and pocketbook, then be overly polite and act like everyone's sweet old granny. Add in a few tears at the right time.

shame the damned judge into knocking it right down!

Just make sure she doesn't start cursing out the cop again! If done right, th ewhole court will look at him like an evil villain.

Richard, you might check with the local AAA to see if the areas have been designated as speed traps. Sometimes local newspapers or TV stations like to do stories on the number of speeding tickets issued and the alleged speeds, and they compare those to similar communities. :surprise:

(I think the TV stations and newspapers use the MCI plan--friends and family, if someone they know gets an unfair ticket, they go after the offending political entity.)

The AAA local office may not be much help. I recall long ago when the speed limit had dropped to 55 nationwide and I asked at the local small town, I mean small town, AAA office what AAA's stance was. The old ladies sitting around said they loved the 55 speed limit. Then I realized that's because they didn't have to drive: they just sat in the passenger seat of the Buick and their husband drove the slow, long miles at 55 when traveling.

Comcast had the same box we have now for the longest time.

We have two Comcast DVR's. I can't remember the model numbers but the old one is silver and didn't have nearly the recording space the new one (all black) has. When I went to pick up the second one, I was just asking if they had any newer models with HDMI. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it also had a huge hard drive... much more room to record things.

I was stunned at the picture quality of the Samsung LED.

That’s the way I felt when I bought a new Samsung 23/24 inch LED monitor a few months ago on-line from Tiger Direct. I’m running that thing at 25% brightness, unbelievable how clear that thing is.

When I get a new HD TV for the family room (thought I was on my way last Friday when the FiOS box got quirky), to replace the ’05 50 inch Sony, I’m going with a 55 inch Samsung LED. No question about it. I won’t even consider another brand now and by the time I buy, it will be a generation or two improved, not that it needs any improvement.

Car thing…I’ll probably pick it up with Son #2s Kia Sedona van that I mentioned last week. I saw it yesterday for the first time, not bad at all.

To Houdini: Thanks for the duct tape idea. Upon reflection, I don't think that it would lend itself to our decor.

Absolute nonsense. Duct tape comes in a wide array of colors, and even patterns. I'm sure I could find one to fit your decor. If you need ideas on how to hang/repair items using coathangers, I can provide that assistance as well.

I missed was identifying the ’52 De Soto, Henry J, Kaiser and Willys.

Those were difficult. When I was a kid there was a guy with a Henry J parked across the road and I could get the Willy's through elimination. One problem is if you get one wrong, you will probably get 2 wrong. I did get one wrong because I made 2 cars Chrysler New Yorkers and didn't make one a Dodge Coronet, which is hard to do.

Funny how your first answer is usually right, and changing it only makes it worse.

When we were looking at Best Buy about 2 years ago the sales guy said 2 companies owned the licensing for LED technology. One was Samsung and the other might be Sony, I am not sure of the second. But, I would think, the company that invented them must make them as good as any other company, probably better. Why sell the rights to another company that will build a better TV?

On the other hand, maybe that story was a crock.........

imid....be careful with those LED/LCD TVs. They do look nice, in the showroom. However, plasmas still offer the more accurate pictures in the industry. Their black levels are still unsurpassed. And, they are generally cheaper than LCD/LED sets.

They really jack up the contrast of all sets, making them look brighter. If you look close enough, you'll see the "edge enhancement" signal processors on LCD/LED sets that will make them look sharper, but accentuate "jagged" edges on images. Plus, regardless of the great strides they've made in recent years, LCD/LED TVs still suffer from motion blur on fast moving images.

Plasmas have lower margin dollars attached to them since they are harder to manufacture than LCD/LED TVs. They still offer a better picture in your home, though.

If you're going to buy a big screen, now's the time. There's a predicted shortage (with higher prices) because of the diminished manufacturing capacity in Japan.

I'd steer clear of the 3D sets, too. The release of 3D movies are slowing to a crawl except the children's movies. There are rumblings that 3D sets (and blu ray players, and movies) are going to see a steep drop since it just hasn't caught on quickly enough. You might wait a year and pick one up much cheaper than they are today, as a result.

Unfortunately, AAA was no help. When I explained what I wanted, the lady said, "We don't deal with that sort of thing." I'm not surprised. In this mega buck resort area, they never rock the boat on any issue. It's all about pulling in those corporate jets for the golf tournaments, planting the flowers, manicuring the lawns, and making "kiss kiss" with the tourists. It's a utopia image that must not be tarnished by the slightest conflict or hint of discord. The high point of a city council meeting is to ask the shop owners to remember to sweep in front of their businesses.

Good grief! My wife's behavior pales in comparison to this lady! My wife never raised her voice; she just made those sarcastic remarks. I was actually shocked because it was so out of character for her. It was the second ticket in her life---the first being over 40 years ago. I think that all of my talk about those speed traps came back to her. I can't defend her speeding, but I may have wired her psychologically. She regrets her attitude, but I told her not to worry about it. We all have one of those days now and then.

"I can assure you the city of Augusta doesn't plant a bush or a blade of grass without first considering how it will impact the Masters."

Same here in Pinehurst. We host the PGA---men's and women's every few years. The natives are put to every inconvenience. Year before last, they closed our main route into town (a state highway) so that the golfers and tourists could move around more easily...using their golf carts, bicycles, and stretch limos to park where they wanted near the golf courses. All Pinehurst Village parking was for the guests---to reach the shops and restaurants in an easy fashion. The Women's PGA is due here again in 2012. I dread it. Talk about your entitlement issues. They think that they own the place. We're always so glad when that week is over and done.

Some people rent out their houses for $10K a week to the golfers, media, and corporate giants. Not us! We've heard the horror stories. They have wild parties and will trash your house in one evening. You can imagine what your house would look like in a week. We've decided that next time we will lock up the house and go to the beach for that week.

I've been hearing & reading a bit too much about factory shut downs & supplier problems in Japan affecting everything in the automotive world from navigation chips to air bag components. I was originally going to wait to pull the trigger on this Pilot, but I'm going to act sooner.

I test drove the Pilot last week. My wife drove it tonight at a different dealership. She likes it and is comfortable driving it which is important because it will be her primary vehicle.

I believe the market has changed a lot since April & wanted to gauge the market accoredingly. I'm going to call a few other dealers in the area & hopefully make my decision within the next week.

    Wish me luck.

Yep. Most TVs have a built in "Store Mode" -also known as "Torch Mode"- which features increased contrast and sharpness so that the set screams "Look at me!" to the untrained eye. You used to see a similar technique used with speakers. Some manufacturers would build speakers with boosted treble and bass response to make them stand out from the more accurate speakers in a showroom environment.

A few years ago I too was all set to buy an LCD set, but additional research led me to the conclusion that plasmas offered the most accurate picture. If you prefer an artificially bright picture with the sharpness set to 11, go for it- just know that the TV is not displaying anything remotely close to an accurate picture.

I'd still go with a BD player; you can pick up a decent unit for less than $150(although I really like the $499 Oppo BDP-93) As for 3D, it may well end up in the extinct format graveyard- along side the HD DVD, the Betamax VCR, and AM stereo...

    >They do look nice, in the showroom. However, plasmas still offer the more accurate pictures in the industry. Their black levels are still unsurpassed.

I was looking on behalf of Mr. Richard. I realize the stores set up the brightness and contrast, at least at the BadBoy stores: the BestBuy has fluorescent lighting over the TV areas. The HH Gregg has a viewing area that's not directly lit by fluorescent and it's much easier to imagine the set under home conditions.

I'm not in the market currently, but if one of our three sets dies (hope not) I would be looking. I like to listen to all the input from people who do know, such as here. I bow to the expertise from people who know more than I do.

Ironically, I helped our friends in Tennessee shop for a flatscreen two Christmases back. Their HH Gregg in Murfreesboro has a really nice setup for low light display. I liked certain LCD sets in the larger size he wanted (maybe it was 46 then) but he ended up going back for the Samsung plasma the day we left. To my eye the reds appear more natural and true on the plasma that he chose.

Agreed, but how long is the life expectancy of a plazma TV compared to an LCD?

Also, I have to consider portability. I prefer the lighter weight of an LCD, makes it easier to take home, put up on the wall, take down or move around in the future.

Sharpness of the picture is important, but only up to a point.

nyc...good luck and keep us posted on the Pilot. Those are very nice vehicles and I believe would be a worthwhile addition to your family.

roadburner.....I have an OPPO BDP 83 blu ray player, the 93's predecessor. Fantastic machine. Not cheap, but one of the best out there.

The media industry has tried for decades to get the public to latch on to 3D. As long as you have to wear glasses to get the effect, people will mostly shy away.

Some friends and I went down to the Masters in 2007. The golf course itself was gorgeous but I was very surprised at how seedy the overall area around the golf course was. We were not impressed by the city of Augusta, at least the parts that we saw.

C’mon, how many times have you moved a big screen TV around in your house? I’ve never done it even once. Probably because I chose the right spot the first time. I wouldn't want to be drilling holes for the new spot or fixing the holes for the old spot let alone the cable mess that is required for a move. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels like this. Talk to Richard and see if he's up to doing that stuff.

As for LCD, LED or plasma they all look good to me in the store. Yes, I can see a difference in the color when a plasma is next to either of the other two but I wouldn’t say one is better than the other. As for which one is displaying the more accurate color, I wouldn’t know that either. As long as the picture satisfies my eyes that’s all I care about. Maybe some can equate this to “feel of the road” but since I drive a throwaway what would I know about the real thing? :confuse:
