Unless their party name is actually socialist calling them that isn't helpful at all.

    I think members of the NDP would be proud to admit they are socialists. Wikipedia gives this definition of the party;

The New Democratic Party commonly referred to as the NDP, is a social-democratic[1] federal political party in Canada. The party is regarded as falling on the left in the Canadian political spectrum.[2]

Our Conservative government is far more liberal than your Republican Party, probably closer to the Democrats
I think any member of the NDP would readily admit to being a socialist. We even have a Communist Party but they don't win any seats and get few votes. Maybe, since we have a Communist Party, being called a socialist here doesn't have quite the same meaning as it does in the U.S.- it isn't a bad word. I don't think it is used in a derogatory way here, it just states the parties objectives.

Governments that lean toward the far left have made a mess of the economies in several European nations, so that is why I am concerned.
Our present Conservative leader was an economist, and he knows that to create jobs and cut debt, you can't spend recklessly, and you have to cut taxes so businesses will prosper and so the people can spend.

I've got Bullitt on Blu-ray and I've watched the chase several times; McQueen's Mustang wears several dents and scrapes- before the chase even starts.

Edmunds says the Mustang base GT with stick MSRP is just over $29K. That must have had every option under the sun.

I optioned out a GT and with the options I wanted(Brembo brake pkg, 3:73 gears, heated seats, and Xenons) I was looking at @$37K...

I had a great weekend at the Hoosier BMW Club's Spring HPDE. Here are a few pictures of my car on track:

    image

    image

    image

    (Photos by PhotoMotion)

There were the usual BMWs and Porsches, but several other interesting cars stood out; there was a Pearl Yellow Lamborghini Gallardo, a black Lexus IS-F, and a 1974 Corvette- complete with chrome side pipes.

Sunday started out rainy, and I provided comic relief by spinning out in turns 2 and 4.
On the same lap. With a student in the car. I later told him to do the exact opposite of everything I did and he would be fine...

the parameters of your left and right debate in Canada are different than those in the US. Silly me.

Your first post made some good points. It is easy to label people as socialists and make it sound like a dirty word, and I think that happens in the U.S. a lot.

What you said was a reminder for me that we should be careful how we say things. In Canada socialists don't mind being called socialists.

I worked for an American publishing company for 16 years. We had sales meetings in New York. Whenever they discussed the companies medical benefits program they always told the Canadians not to pay attention to that part of the session....because we had "socialized medicine"- and they would say it with a snear like we had a disease. We never think of it as socialized medicine, it is just our health care program.

Good point. I've been hearing of the evils of "socialized medicine" since maybe high school. We knew Moscow was pushing it.....

Of course in NJ here we hear of the evils of letting people that don't work at the gas station pump gas as well. We're wary of those socialists from places like Pennsylvania or Delaware.....

Yeah, I forget at times that socialist is a perfectly good word in most of the world as opposed to the label it has here. Same thing for that terrible word "liberal."

"I actually like the idea of a parliamentary system."

Your U.S. Congress is based on the best facets of a parliamentary system. Our two houses offer the advantage of compromise, and your joint committees provide the centered thinking that you mention. The wonderful system of checks and balances among the three branches (executive, legislative, and judicial) have provided for the lasting endurance of our democratic form of governemnt. Our system has served us well until the last 20 or 30 years. Through no fault of the system, we have lost true statesmen who were replaced by too many "lug nuts". (Nice way to stay on topic.) Still, there are a few good men and women in both parties. The sad thing is that they are so out numbered. Thank goodness no one lives forever. For those who can't seem to be voted out, their bodies finally wear out. That's when both of your quotes play such an appropriate part. :D

I am doing my part for the economy. Just not the automotive part!

after 4 days of back breaking labor, the 1st floor of the house is ready for the installers to come tomorrow to start putting in the 33 boxes of wood currently stacked up in my dining room. Should help modernize the place, replacing dated white tile, 18 YO mauve carpet, and 10 YO used to be blue gray carpet in the family room, all with nice solid oak hardwood.

next week the contractor comes to convert an extra upstairs closet into a laundry room, getting the machines out of the far reaches of the basement (and finally ditching the rube goldberg dryer vent that snakes all over the place. Surprised that baby hasn't torched the house yet!)

Hey NYcar guy, any advice on what to install for water connections, dryer vent, washer pan, etc?

Oh, I am still waiting on the estimate for redoing the kitchen. That might give me heart failure! Pretty sure it will be my wifes call, that or the BMW she wants.

Nice LED flat panel comes next though.

Here's a link to my ad that I've posted on craig's list. The copy mirrors that of my autotrader.com ad. Please let me know if I should add anything or take anything out.

I paid autotrader the extra $8 so I can have 9 photos of my car instead of just the 1 freebee.

Looking at the car so bright and shiny makes me love driving it even more. I swear it drives better when it is clean. It does look damn good for a daily driver that has seen over 140,000 miles & 8 NY winters.

If you are putting your washing machine upstairs & putting A LOT of work into hardwood floors, you should make sure of a few things:

I sell a product called FLOOD STOPPER. It is a sensor that sits on the plastic tray where your washing machine goes & attaches to the hose valves for the hot & cold water. If your machine even leaks a drop of water, it will immediately cut the water supply off. I think it sells for somewhere around $125. I have a customer who puts these in Multi-Million dollar apartments in Manhattan. It is cheap insurance. I also sell FLOODSTOPPER for hot water heaters.

Make sure all the valves you use are ball type or 1/4 turn. This includes hose cocks & speedy valves. Make sure there is are shut offs located near the washing machine so in case there is ever a problem, you don't have to run downstairs & shut the water off to the whole house.

NIBCO ball valves are made in the USA & excellent. They are also expensive.
LEGEND ball valves are imported & very good.
The best speedy valves made (IMO) are BRASSCRAFT KTR17C (or KTR19C).
I like Copper pipe, but your contractor will probably use PEX tubing which a lot of people swear by.

Make sure he doesn't use rubber washing machine hoses. BRASSCRAFT makes a braided polymer washing machine hose that is a lot stronger & also more expensive than regular rubber hoses. I sell these for about $15 each.

Anything other questions you have, let me know.

Where do I sign up? The ad is great, I don't see how the phone won't be ringing off the hook.

I have a general question about automobile sales though. I once read it was better not to mention a price in the ad. More people will call and it will give them a question to ask you, and make them more curious. This applies to all items, such as real estate.

I am not so sure. I think I would be more inclined to call if I know the price.
I don't like restaurants that don't post menus for the same reason. I want to know what theyhave and what their prices are like before I go in.

The car is, indeed, beautiful. Hope it sells super-quickly - it should.

driver, I don't even bother with ads (for anything) that don't list a price. Why should I waste all day calling people just to find out if the item is in my target price range? Just give me the info up front, and I promise that when I call, I will still have plenty of questions for you. I consider it to be discourteous to buyers to not provide an asking price up-front. You're basically saying you have time to waste, and you assume that shoppers do too.

You are being kind to the description of the money suckers we have in DC spending like royalty on themselves and their lifestyle with OPM.

Then there are those whose bodies long followed their minds and their office is being run by lobbyists and aides. The congress person is obviously too feeble when they do show up for some important vote to make a speech onthe floor, e.g., Byrd of WV, Kennedy of MA, of late.

These are the people whom we have at the wheel of our car. They keep ordering bigger and bigger engines and longer and longer limosines to serve themselves. The public is tired of putting fuel in the gas tank (taxes) for the Congress.

We need term limits for congress. If they're too out-of-it to be a salesman in an auto showroom, they need to be out of congress. I'll stop there before I politicize this post.

I don't even bother with ads (for anything) that don't list a price.

    I basically agree with what you have said. I think the guy writing the article is thinking like this;

First you make them curious and want the item. Not having a price forces the possible customer to call and talk on the phone. Once on the phone you have a better chance of catching them.

If you put the price in the ad, the possible buyer will make a snap decision one way or the other, yes it seems reasonable....no, the price is higher than I want to pay....so, you lose some prospective buyers before you even start.

A person who is really interested will make the call and you will weed out the people just looking for a cheap car.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------

I think the expert is wrong. I always check the prices of interesting cars and that would definitely be a factor in whether I made a call or not. Without a price I also think the price is probably too high, that's why they aren't publishing it. The guy writing the article was a super salesman.
I will say though...if it was a car or a home I really wanted, I would call if there was a price posted or not.

You are in for the treat of your life. Those hardwood floors will provide continuity after having two colors of carpet and white tile. The entire downstairs will look larger and give a feeling of openness. The sheer beauty of the floors will also enhance your ability to use more furniture colors, styles, pictures, light fixtures, etc. All of the hard work and expense will be so worth it. Good luck on your installation. Be sure to check for defective pieces, leveling, spaces, etc. Let us know how they look.

If the price of something isn't listed, I just go on to the next ad. I'm not wasting a phone call to find out that your item is too expensive. As the seller, you can save unwanted phone calls by stating the price up front. It eliminates some of those cheap buyers who want something for nothing.

I sell a product called FLOOD STOPPER. It is a sensor that sits on the plastic tray where your washing machine goes & attaches to the hose valves for the hot & cold water.

Great advice that should be heeded.

We have a first floor laundry room that is off of the kitchen and because of that I have been thinking about installing one of those hose break protector thingies on both the hot/cold water lines. Even though we have the easily operated one handle lever type shut off valve that shuts off both lines at the same time (when its used), using the latest safety device is a very good idea. Being a belt and suspenders guy, I have also thought of putting a large floor drain under the washer and piping it to the main drain line in the basement below the laundry room.

I have trained Mrs. j, way back to our first house that had the washer in the basement, to shut off both valves and bleed off the pressure in the lines via actuating the washer cycle knob after the valves have been closed. Believe it or not she actually does this ALL the time and double checks to make sure it is done before she leaves the house or goes to bed. Both of us have heard the horror stories of what happens when a line breaks when people have been gone for hours. It even happened to someone we knew years ago.

Your ad for the Prelude should bring serious buyers when they read how meticulously your beauty has been cared for although everyone will still want to steal it from you. But I’m sure you know how to handle this.

I tend to agree with what you said. Just as an example though, imagine this,
You see an ad for a 2010 SRX and it is listed at $25,000.

Right below it is an ad for exactly the same car but with even more options that seem to be options you would want, but no price is given.

I think I would make the call to the 2nd guy, and I might even call him first. I know what the 1st guy is asking. What if the 2nd guys price is the same or lower? Might be higher, but could be lower, and would be worth checking, I think.

Thanks for all the positive responses to my ad. I've gotten 1 lead from autotrader & one "lead" from craig's list.

The person from autotrader asked to see more pics of the car. I emailed them last night & paid an extra $8 to have a total of 9 photos up on autotrader.
I will follow up with him today.
I received a scam response from someone on craig's list. Here are the 2 letters he sent:

Is this ad still for sale ? What's is the present condition ?

I humored him & replied that yes the car was still available. It is in great condition as I just took the pics on Saturday. I also asked if he wanted to come and see the car in person.

Good to have your reply. I am William Trent from IL.and would have loved to come and inspect this at your place myself, but I am presently off-shore.I am interested in buying this for my son in Rockford as a surprise birthday gift and pls just make sure it is in condition described. I will appreciate more pictures if available and will be sending your money asap. My shipper will be available to pick this up as soon as payment is made. Do you have PayPal account? because, I have a paypal account that I can easily send money through because, its good for business payments. Get back to me with your PayPal email address and name in order for me to have your money sent on time. Confirm sale to me and remove the add
from posting. can you send me some pics ?

thanks. I have heard of these devices, and will look at them before the job is started, and discuss with the contractor/plumber.

Is this something that has to get put in with the plumbing work, or can it be easily added?

I know we are getting a approved by code pan, with a drain in it (tied into the main) to go under the washer, so a small leak should be contained/drained, but that won't help if a hose blows! I did, however, recently get some nice braided steel (GE brand I think) that I will reuse.

also, for the shutoffs, do you mean upstream from the normal valves where you connect the hoses? not sure about them, since the pipes themselves will be in the wall.

I take the scam responses, copy them, and paste them into my "Alexandra Romanov, Tsarina" email account. Then I keep most of the subject line they used, but change the name of "the item" in the subject line to something ridiculous like "box of rattlesnakes." Then I reply that my rattlesnakes are still available. However, I might require overpayment in the form of a cashier's check because of the extensive customs fees required for the export/import of live venomous animals.

It just amuses me that they don't even read, because I often get a response asking where to send the check. I use the name above (including title), and the address of our local police station, should they actually decide to send a check.

"We need term limits for congress."

Amen to that one! After serving several terms, my FIL decided not to run again. When I asked him why he was stepping down, he said that the people's work shouldn't become a career choice for an individual. He was a good man. He drove his own car, paid his own expenses, and donated much of his "salary" to charity. He later became a very successful lobbyist, but never enjoyed it as much as serving his constituents. At home, he owned a Pontiac/Harvester Farm Machinery dealership. Though he sold a lot of cars, those $100K combines and tractors made his business successful. will have to look at the store for the flood stopper gizmo. From googling, only found a fancy whole house thing with control panels, a big valve tied into the main water supply line, etc Looked more like an alarm system diagram! Was also well over 1K for the various components.

if they have a simpler version that just attaches to the valves, I could see it being the $125 you mentioned.

When I did my laundry room, I used one of these:

Simple item for the vent and gas connection.

We also used a single handle valve for the water sitting in a recessed box with the drain for the washer integrated. Lastly I used a plastic pan with a drain going all the way into the basement from the second floor that drains into my slop sink. Hopefully, I'll never need to use that.

.and would have loved to come and inspect this at your place myself, but I am presently off-shore.

Thanks for printing that. I love those scam guys. At least he didn't haggle on the price.

Now that is ingenious! I love it. He asks if the car has changed since the pictures were taken...can he have more pictures. Say you did take it out once and had a minor fender bender, but here is a new picture.

We have 2 toilets with a knob on top of the tank that you pull up on. These are very inefficient, they don't work too well. Also, they are a pain to try to put a new plunger on because there are wires connecting everything. They don't seal all the time so the water can run for hours before you realize it didn't seal. If you do have to change the plunger you have to balance the tank lid in one hand while you disconnect the wires.

The house is only 4 years old so I don't want to change them, but give me a good old fashioned handle any time.

Another thing is, they can get a man to the moon, but they can't make a plunger that is easy to fix....what gives?

Craigslist robbery victim recovering from bullet in jaw

"A 19-year-old man is recovering from a gunshot wound to his jaw after two men robbed him Thursday night during what was supposed to be the sale of a dirt bike advertised on Craigslist.org.

"Authorities said the shooting is part of a recent rash of local robberies involving items for sale on the popular website. Thursday’s robbery was the first involving a shooting.

"Trotwood police Sgt. Fred Beck said the victim, the stepson of a Dayton police officer, was released from Miami Valley Hospital on Friday. He said doctors left the bullet in the man’s jaw, and that his injury is non-life threatening.

"Beck said the man was shot in the face near Gardendale Avenue and Watkins Place about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The victim, accompanied by a woman, drove a pickup truck with the motor bike in its bed when they met two men for the sale.

"One of the two men shot the seller in the face and apparently fled on the bike that was for sale."
