"Yes, I'm on the prednisone, the antiviral, and the pain killer. If a person ever needed to gain weight, they could just ask the doctor to put them on prednisone. I can go through a box of cookies, a bowl of popcorn, and a family size bag of chips in a day!"

    Richard--

Please be careful with the prednisone. My brother is a pulmonologist and he pointed out the sad condition of comedian Jerry Lewis who has pulmonary fibrosis which necessitates long term prednisone treatment. Have you seen how puffy and bloated Lewis's face (and body) have become? Not a pretty picture.

The same thing happened to one of our cats. We just couldn't seem to get her off the stuff for a long time. Boy did she blimp out, but she did return to her original svelte shape within a year or so of getting off the stuff permanently. Our dog who passed away in January didn't fare as well on the pred, prescribed to help with his arthritic spine. It actually really fouled up his GI tract.

Conversely, I can't say enough good stuff about pred in the short term, especially treating poison ivy.

The thing about prednisone is you can't beat it for bringing down inflammation but it has so many side effects that it's hardly ever something you want to do long term. Jerry Lewis is a great example.

I've been on it for toxoplasmosis which involves inflamed retinas and one retina lost enough at age 10 that I'm legally blind in that eye. The prednisone was to stop the same thing in the good eye. There have been many episodes of that.

When my arthritis got horrible back in 82 I had too go on it for a while. I was hot and burning up with it. Prednisone knocked it right out. Have been under control with other things mostly since.

Nowadays I'm on a dozen or so medications including chemo and shots. Yippee. I'm still planning on living to be 100. So far so good.

A couple of months ago I had to travel for work and fell back by 1000 or so posts. I finally caught up today!

I hope everybody who had/is having health problems feels better.

Congratulations on the new baby (not the Pilot, the real baby), nyc! Congrats on the Pilot too.

zzzzz....um, would someone wake me up if a sales story should happen to come up.

    Let's see...I guess that's my job.

It looks like all of the sales guys have either moved on, died, been banned or they retired.

Today I was in my old store having my oil changed. It was good to see the old crowd. Got hugged and my hand is sore from all of the shaking. I relly miss the great people I worked with.

Then there are the things I definatly DO NOT miss!

"...At least the Russian's checked for radiation..."

I wonder how you you would even go about that. I can see this becoming the latest hysteria with people demanding proof of no radiation. Of course that can't be do as almost everything emits very low amounts of it.

The people who make their living scaring you don't want you to know that.

Peersonally, I believe that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Hey, I have some KI pills that I'll sell you cheap if you're too worried....

I don't take what exposure to things can do lightly in that all of my ills relate to exactly that sort of thing but I'm not a nut about it either. I do live within a ten mile radius of a nuke plant (which is why the county gave us the KI pills).

Might I also recommend "Popcorn Indiana" with sea salt. It's so good...ate another bowl last night around 3 AM along with some very large chocolate chip cookies. I fell asleep around 6:30 AM, but was back up by 9 AM eating blueberry muffins and honeynut cereal. Lunch was three ham sandwiches with lettuce and tomato, plus dill pickles, olives, and cheese. I topped it off with chocolate mint ice cream. Tonight, I had a ribeye, baked potato, and ceasar salad. Who knows what I'll have later? My wife said that it is getting sickening to watch. Talk about The Munchies!

In you honor, I'll post a car ad that came in the mail today from our local Toyota dealer. They must be desperate: 2011 Camry with 0% financing for 60 months, $500 cash bonus, $500 New Toyota bonus, up to $2,500 more for your trade (notice the words "up to".), and free two year maintenance agreement---small print said for two years or 25K miles.

The funny thing is, imagine that local dealership sending ME a Toyota ad. Too funny after my 2007 experience. I'll never forget the salesman saying that I would feel better if I was "born again". Believe me; I was!

Holly....what a varacious appetite! Do you have to prepare your own food or is it being prepared for you? How much food do you have on hand in your house? Were you preparing for a national disaster of some kind?

Hey, let’s knock it off about what Prednisone does for your appetite.

About 3 weeks ago I came by a fungal infection that is being treated by a 21 day dose of the generic for Lamisil which was started about 2 weeks ago. I had this thing for a week, I guess, before I went to the PCP who said, “go see a derm”. The first derm guy said the earliest I could be seen was mid June. That was not going to work. I was lucky to get an appointment within a couple days, with another guy, due to the persistence of Mrs. j calling around to get me in because of a cancellation with that guy. Well, the itch was getting pretty bad so I was prescribed the 6 day pack of Prednisone after about a week. It worked for the itch but as soon as the pills were gone the itch came back again (last Saturday). Now I’m on two 20mg pred pills for 5 days and after that one 20mg pill for the next 5 days. I started this regimen last night after another doctor appointment with the derm.

While on the 6 day pack of Prednisone I didn’t notice anything different about my appetite. I hope this next round doesn’t change that but I have noticed a difference since the beginning of using the pred in the way I have been jacked-up to the point it has affected my sleep. I can live with that better than the itch which covers almost my whole body except my face and is terribly annoying.

This is the worst thing I have ever had and that includes the shingles in early May of 2000.

About the Toyota ad you received, this dealer figures that if you could buy another Cadillac he still has a shot with you. Especially since you have been “born again”.

Whenever I've been on prednisone, after about 3 days, I lose my sense of taste. Almost totally. I've mentioned this to various doctors, and all have just said something like 'Never heard of that happening.'

The 0% for 60 I believe is a nationwide campaign for them right now. I saw a commercial last night for that same offer. I remember not that long ago you would never see that offer on a Yota. You may have gotten something like 1.9% for 36.

You big lug, here I've been complaining for a week with shingles and you've been going through your own private hell for three weeks. I hope that infection clears up soon. Did the derm mention what may have caused it to begin? A prolonged itch can be terribly irritating. You're right about the Prednisone jacking you up with no sleep. I finally got 5 hours last night. I am just so tired. The pain seems a little better this morning. It's hell to get old. Get well soon and keep us posted.

To answer your question, my wife is doing the food preparation. As you know, we both cook, but she's been nice enough to play nurse. I try to fix my own sandwitches and quick things. As for having food on hand, I make a list and she picks it up at the store. We usually keep a fair amount of items on hand as I don't care to dine out too often. I did so much of that when I was traveling in my work. Since we like to cook, we usually shop in a big way once a month. We then pick up odds and ends the remainder of the month. I usually keep 4 or 5 cartons of ice cream in the freezer, plus cheesecake, pies, etc. If anyone drops by the house, they won't go home hungry.

Did the derm mention what may have caused it to begin?

He said it ALWAYS comes from the foot area.

I have had on/off athlete’s foot my whole life it seems and a sprits of Tinactin for a week or rubbing a little medicated cream potion on my feet and no more problem. No big deal really, or so I thought, until the derm said, “I see the body rash, take off your socks and let me take a look at your feet”. He said, “just as I thought, you have a toenail fungus. I can tell by the color of a few nails”. I said, “you call that bad? I call that good. I’ve seen them look a lot worse and I’ve had no problem”. :confuse: He said, “well, it’s not good but Lamasil will fix your problem”. Then came the itch. After a couple days of the 20 mg tablets of Prednisone, I’m starting to feel better. In fact, I slept like a baby last night.

    It's hell to get old.

I don’t consider myself old. I’m experienced. However, I could do without so much experience sometimes, like now.

FWIW, I might be able to pass on a sales tale or two a little later because both of my sons are in the market for cars. They are both planning on buying used or should I say “previously owned”. Either way, it would be on topic and, if by chance I bring 2 stories here, this would call for not only a dues reduction for me but a cook-out for everyone at Edmunds expense. :) This medical stuff is getting old.

That's my laugh maker for the day. I think what reality is about is that the talk about health problems is making us (me at least) FEEL old, not just that it's getting old. ;)

A friend who had had major problems after abdominal surgery two years ago with two following surgeries (in intensive care units 33 days total) and had a repair surgery last may was talking about his rehab visit after his heart attack two months ago. On the first visit he said it was really depressing because, get this, everyone there is OLD. He felt out of place: he's 64.

I had to chuckle a bit too. When we would get together for family holidays, my parents' generation would all sit around and talk about their ailments and what drugs they were taking. I was amazed at how they could rattle off those drug names.

When we were together on Easter the other day, it was the same thing but my parents and my aunt and uncle are in their 80's (dad is 89) so they are lucky if they can even hear each other now. :) My aunt is the only one who can still walk on her own without a scooter or wheelchair.

    "...They must be desperate..."

That's funny seeing that this summer they are looking at a shortage of cars. I would think that Toyota dealers (well, ALL dealers) would be less likely to deal knowing what's coming. UNLESS...Richard, you don't have a gieger counter laying around somewhere do you? ;)

Good, don't forget one day I am going to find that book-and I will deliver it in person!

Toyota probably has to offer great deals to get some customers back...after the brake fiasco and now the radiation scare, they will probably drop back to the #2 auto maker.

I saw an ad for the Chevy Cruze and they start from about $16k Cdn with automatic and a/c. Then I saw one on the road. They are pretty big, look like a Dodge Challenger. Seems like a lot of car for the money....not the prettiest car but a lot of car (it was larger than the older model square Malibu in front of it.)

Of course that can't be do as almost everything emits very low amounts of it.

That’s true but with the instruments used today it is very easy to measure harmful radiation compared to “background radiation”. And yes, this can be used to aid in the hysteria that people will naturally eat up. Then again, this is the car biz and the Russians are known for their negotiating skills so this might be a ploy to get a better deal on the cars that hit their ports. Like, “we can see our way clear to keep these cars but you’ll have to do better on the price”.

no, I did not by. But I got to talk to a bunch of sales people (no lack of attention). Was at lunch today, and there were a few actual shoppers there. It also appeared that the dealer (Ford) had more inventory on the lot than they have had for a while. At least 10 Foci (what I was looking at).

really loaded up on the used side though. that never did run low on stock.

I don't think we would get up at 4 am to see the Royal wedding. We will see what is happening at 6 to 6:30. Poor Kate, she will be the only normal one in a dysfunctional family. I am sure the hi-lites will be shown on the news.

That would be nice to see you if you journey this way. Not too many Americans coming this way these days, our dollar reached $1.05 against the U.S. dollar. Lots of Canadians shopping across the border these days. I hope one of those places becomes available in Florida while our dollar is high.

We put in a bid on another house in the same community but the lady won't sell until her husband goes...he is in his late 90s and is in the hospital. Not sure why she listed it if she isn't prepared to sell it.

For those who feel the effects of "getting old"...here is another take on it.

I am 72, and for the past 5 years have been volunteering at the local hospital in patient transport (wheeling around the patients in wheelchairs or on stretchers). I appreciate this to be a gift as each healthy day is a bonus.

Last week I took a very frail, 90 something lady down for an MRI (she could not have weighed more than 90 pounds. When on the elevator she sat slumped over and stared ahead with a blank expression on her face. I bent down in front of her and asked her "how is your day going today?"
Her eyes brightened and looked at me with a smile...and said.."thank you for asking...it is a good day today...already this morning I have had three bowel movements!'

That made my day too...I will never forget her.

I was informed last night by Son #2 that he will be traveling to Florence KY (just outside of Cincy) to purchase a 2008 KIA Sedona from Sweeny Kia. I think this is the place that has been mentioned here by ‘roadburner’ and ‘jip’ as being a place that they don’t like but I could be wrong about this. For whatever reason the model/color/options he wanted has not popped up here in the Burgh area for the past month that he has been looking (it will now), so he will make the 5 1/2 hour trip (each way) on Saturday. That’s a lot farther than I would go for a car, I can tell you that.

He did all of the final negotiating by phone with the sales manager when the salesman couldn’t meet his price. He said it wasn’t painful at all and both he and his older brother have gone out of state before to get cars so this is not plowing new ground for him. When he made his last car purchase (’06 Mazda 6 in ’08) he drove to Columbus (again farther than I would go for a car).

I don’t have much in the way of details and I’m not going to ask him what he paid because it isn’t any of my business but he knows how to shop for a car so I’m sure he knows how to do it. All I can say now is that it is used with less than 26K miles, is Red, is pretty well loaded up and has at least everything that he had to have. He has two kids (son and a daughter) and felt that a van was better for him than a SUV. Son #1 is on his second van (3 boys now) and Son #2 has seen how a van is more versatile so that is why he has opted for a van vs. another SUV. He’s replacing his ’02 Exploder that has around 150K miles but I forgot to ask if he was trading that in but I don’t think he is.

If this Sweeny guy is not known for good service that won’t affect my son because he obviously isn’t going back there for his service work.

More to follow if the test drive doesn’t kill the deal (pretty unlikely).

It looks like I’m halfway towards a dues reduction and a cook-out for everyone. :)

Our next door neighbors bought a Kia Sedona a few months ago. I believe it is used, but don't know the model year. Dark blue, and pretty sharp looking for a minivan. I think they've got the EX trim level.

While there may not be a huge amount of sales stories on this thread, I am noticing quite a number of new cars on the roads of my little (50,000) town here in Colorado, so somebody is buying.

    "...2008 Kia Sedona..."

I hope he's not going to trade it any time soon. I seem to remember reading that the Sedona depreciated faster than any other auto made. Someting like 80% in 5 years.

I'd be scared to travel that far for a car after hearing some of the bait & switch horror stories on Edmunds.

Still, he is helping to keep this board going, so I guess if his Sedona breaks down we'd all be obligated to come give him a push.

Don't be disappointed if you don't get the dues reduction and the cook-out. Edmunds will probably claim that "second party" stories don't count. :P

Hope it works out well for your son. He might do a business check on them to see if there have been any complaints regarding the sales department. Our SRX was an hour away. I checked on the dealership and they were very well respected. He might give the ADA (Automobile Dealers Association) in KY a quick call. Forget the BBB (Better Business Bureau)---they don't have a clue.

At least you have trained your son well. He knows what to look for and how to negotiate.

I don't mean to turn us back to the discussion on dishwashers, but I just had to share some good news. We have used the new Frigidaire dishwasher several times now. We are amazed by something. We decided to do a load of old glasses and flatware that had been badly clouded by the old dishwasher. They came out just like new. It's next to impossible to remove that old soap stuff as a general rule. In addition, this dishwasher is very quiet---just a hum. The interior design allows more dishes to be loaded, and the flatware baskets hold the most of any that we have ever owned. The trays and baskets are all adjustable to allow for larger bowls, pots, etc. For $535 we are really pleased. Just had to share.

I’m sure he isn’t thinking about trading it for a long time. He usually keeps his cars until they are pretty much worthless. The ’02 Exploder probably falls into that category now and the access into and out of that SUV is why he wanted a van that had both side doors power operated. If he would have caved on that option he could have had a Sedona the first day that he started to look in the Burgh area.

The main reason that he likes to buy used is because he wants the first owner to take the biggest hit. I guess he got that thought from me when I was still raising a family. I questioned him about buying an ’08 because the ’12s should be out pretty soon. He said he was aware of that and took that into consideration when he was negotiating because he considered the ’08 as 4 years old but initially the dealer didn’t want to hear that. In the end he got his price so he must have gotten his point across. Another thing that he said he liked about the Kia Sedona is that it has a pretty good reliability rating even for the ’08. I trust that he researched this enough to be sure.

Son #1 has an ’08 Town and Country that he bought new with a lot of consideration being given to the lifetime warranty on the power train to the first owner. It’s a good thing that he has that kind of a warranty because about a month after we returned from our vacation last summer to Myrtle Beach, the engine had to be replaced due to a rod knock. I drove that van for a fair number of miles during that vacation trip and I didn’t notice a problem with how it responded but Son #1 said that he never liked how the original engine ran compared to the ’02 Dodge Grand Caravan that had the same 6 cyl. engine as the ’08 T&C. The replacement engine convinced him that he was right all along because the T&C engine is like the ’02 Caravan engine now.

Son #2 said he wouldn’t buy a Chrysler car under any circumstances and he could have gotten better deals on them but he wasn’t going to do it. Even Son #2 said he has owned his last Chrysler product even though he likes how well it fits his life style with the kids and all the things he wants to do with it as far as going to the box stores. He’s just tired of having to take it in for warranty repair for one thing after another every time he turns around. The dealer has never corrected the glitch with the power sliding doors.

It’s pretty bad that Chrysler has still not climbed out of their reliability/quality problems and an upstart like Kia is eating their lunch.

‘imid’…thanks for the link to the Ohio DMV, I’ll pass it onto Son #2.

I'm in total agreement with that. If their prices were halved-still no Mopar.

Also stickguy said foci as in Ford Focus plural. Another no sale for me. I'd

rather have a used Neon than a Focus and you know I'd never buy a Neon.

Now the Fusion is nice if you need 4 doors. or Mustang is lots of HP per $

and still brings 30 MPG in the 6 @300+ HP.

Unless it is totally beat, the '02 is still worth some money. check your local craigslist. I'll probably do that with mine next fall.
Mine is headed out on it's next road trip next week, figure just under 2000 miles in 6 days.
Last month, I brought it in to get a rear seal leak fixed. When I got it back it had a vibration once you went over 60 mph.
Took it back, they played with it and it was a bit better, but said it needed a new driveshaft($500 for the part).
Said no thanks and just drove it under 60 mph.
Then I brought it in for an oil change/tire rotation.
Seemed like it was even better, maybe even close to normal.
I just parked it and I'm just going to drive it, good or bad, on this next trip.
Really hoping it's ok, so I can get one more OBX trip out of it, too.
At least the tank of gas I put in it a few weeks ago has gone up in value. ;)

"...won't sell until her husband goes...Not sure why she listed it if she isn't prepared to sell it..."
Maybe she's trying to give her husband a hint.

That reminds me once Jay Leno said, sad news today, the oldest man in the world died today, he was 114 years old.

What happens with the 2nd oldest man in the world....does he go yehhhh, now I am the new oldest man in the world.

That Kia is a nice van. Quite some time ago we tested a Hyundai Entourage. e didn't buy but were very impressed. It's the same van as the Kia. Hyundai dropped it though.

It's Sweeney BMW that roadburner doesn't like... They have a number of dealerships.. I don't want to speak for him, but his issues seemed to be with the attitude of that specific BMW dealership..

Overall, they have a decent reputation... They are still a family-owned company that's been in business for 50+ years.... (not that I'm recommending them). I've shopped some of their dealerships, but never bought a car from them.

That's right down the street from where I went to high school, though... Watch out for empty beer cans!

Yes, the '02 Explorer still has a value. With just the year and the mileage, without knowing options or series, it was just a stab in the dark. Sources show trade in value at about $1,500 for the bottom of the line, and about $2,700 for the top of the line.

For Jmonroe's son, it might be better just to keep it at those values. Then again, he may have no need for it. We have some friends where the husband never trades. He just keeps the old cars and lines them up at the end of their rear property. It drives the wife crazy. She claims that it looks unsightly to her and ruins the looks of their colonial home. Actually, they are parked neatly and it doesn't look too bad to me. She always tells my wife that when he goes, the cars go. Funny how she never thinks that she could go first. :confuse: :surprise:

Once a vehicle gets beyond a certain mileage, the guides are kind of fuzzy.
It's better to check local other sources.

I was up at a quarter to six so turned on the Royal wedding. I saw the Rolls Royce taking Will and Kate to the church. What a sight...people cheering as they drove along in that eloquent Rolls Royce. It just added to the whole celebration....I mean a Cadillac Limo is nice...but there is just something about a Rolls that is so dignified.

I wonder if it has "the feel of the road".

I spoke with Son #2 last night and I have to make a slight correction here. He has a 2000 Explorer not an ’02. He bought it used in ’02. I wanted to know if he was going to trade it and he is NOT. At least I got that part right. I asked why not trade it figuring it would save him not having to run one of his cars up there and back then the van would have to be driven back. If this is done he would have to drive about 11 hours (up and back) and his wife would have to drive 5 1/2 hours. I know, they could split the driving time going up there but that is still a lot of driving in one day. He said he thought of that but that’s the collateral damage of buying out of state. However, he is giving serious thought to renting a car for the one way drive up there. At some point convenience has to enter the equation.

As for the value of the 2000 Explorer, he said he has seen them listed locally for $1200 minimum up to $4200 for a claimed “cream puff”. His is not in bad shape for an 11 year old SUV with almost 150K miles; obvious wear and tear, a few scratches and very minor surface rust in a few spots on the rear wheel wells that he plans to fix. Once he has it ready he figures he should get at least $1700/1800 which is better than the $800/900 dealer phone offer prior to seeing it based on his description.
