That HAS to be the most patronizing, condescending, insulting remark that I have ever heard from a car salesman. I can't even begin to imagine what I would have said to that @#+*! salesman! I detest people who try to brush you off with remarks like that. When my father was in the nursing home, my mother discovered that he had prostate cancer. When she approached the doctor with questions, he casually said, "I wouldn't worry too much about it; he's going to die anyway." It just so happened that I was there at the time. I taught that doctor some new words that even a seasoned sailor has never heard!
Richard
No doubt at all. I am sure they would have gotten to it eventually..... That car spent so much time at the previous dealer, that the BS I got from the new dealer just sealed the deal. I took my loss and moved onto something else.

In otehr words, you made the Drill Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket sound like a choirboy?
BTW, I think I had his twin brother when I went through Army Basic Training!
" Jimmy...how often does it NOT rain?"
When I was in the tool business, I had a customer who was kind of "slow" to say the least. I once sold him an impact guy. About a month later, he came out with it in his hand. " Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't"
So, I told him..." Well, just use it when it's working!"
I thought he would get a good laugh but, instead he walked out saying.." Oh, O.K. that's a good idea"
Naturally I exchanged it and made a note to never let him work on any of my cars!

I'm not sure..but maybe he meant to say "impact gun", but I'm not sure what that would be either.

Actually, from some of what i have read it sounds like it was just an excuse for a pre planned event.
Sounds like it was a pretty common problem for Nova's then.
And the D3 wonder why people started buying foreign cars :confuse:

I think it would have happened win or lose. It was started by low lifes who don't have a life, and it did get some of the not too bright hockey fans caught up in the moment. These idiots encouraged the real trouble makers.
But, there were many more people who were sad and crying because of what happened in their city. A few hundred morons arrested, over 100,000 people were in the streets celebrating, it was just a few really bad apples.

The Reds had some great teams in the 70's.
I went to a Yankees/Reds spring training game in 1977 and couldn't wait to see George Foster bat.
That HAS to be the most patronizing, condescending, insulting remark that I have ever heard from a car salesman.
Not only the patronizing remark but the arm around the shoulders too.
I hate when a salesman tries to buddy up to you physically like that......and the same applies if the salesperson is female.
The equivilant technique for a saleswoman is to get very close and constantly touch you on the hand or the arm as she tries to make her point.
I don't have any problem with physical contact from someone I know well, but in a sales situation it's sleazy at best and in actuality probably comes close to common assault.
Richard
These are air powered tools used to remove bolts on cars. The most common is a 1/2 inch gun that are always used to remove wheels on a car.
The customers never seem to have a rattle after that.
No "strange" vibrations that "sometimes" occur at 64 MPH.
The air conditioners no longer seem "weak".
The sunroofs seem to close quickly etc.
And, it's funny, the customers who microscopically examined every squre inch of the car during delivery looking for the tinest flaw don't seem to care when theur bumpers are scarred up or their interiors are filthy or the wheels are badly curbed scraped.
Funny how that works....
I hate when a salesman tries to buddy up to you physically like that....
Not only that but the sleazy sales guy kept making eye contact with Jim's fiance. Not trying to hustle her, just that he knew that was the way to sell a Nova...because that's the car she wanted.
Touching is supposed to be a sales technique. Once you gently touch someone there is supposed to be a bit more of a bond made. Guess I'm not a touchy feely person where sales people are concerned, but I think in many cases it probably does work. These days you probably have to be careful who you touch and where!!!!

Those things still happen after the warranty is over, it's just that if the dealer couldn't fix it under the warranty they sure aren't going to be able to fix it after the warranty period. At least not easily, and now I am paying for it.
These things don't get fixed under warranty all the time, the customer spends so much time and energy they get worn out and just learn to live with the problem.

Ditto for me, not Williamsburg but.....off to Vancouver and Vancouver Island from Sunday to Saturday. And I'll have the Netbook so I will check in.
Lots of arrests in Vancouver, there are 1000s of photos taken and looters are posting the goods they stole on web sites. Some parents saw their kid in a video and turned him in. One guy clearly shown trying to set a car on fire is a star athlete who will probably be kicked off the team now lol.

Still, my apology is extended.
I hope I'm not a PITA when it comes to warranty work. Fact is, aside from the Cadillac, I haven't had a vehicle in a long, long time that gave me any reason to say I had to take it in specifically for warranty work. Now, I may have some minor niggly thing I mention to the service writer to look at while I'm having my oil changed. But, that's about it.
driver....a BMW store down in Lexington (about 2 hours from me) must have seen my name pop up on "Trucar.com". So, a very nice sales lady emailed me, introducing herself and explaining she was the store's internet representative.
As I told her, I was just doing some research. She understood and asked if I ever made the trip down to Lexington to stop by their dealership, if only to say "hi".
During the course of our conversation, she mentioned that BMW is doing a promotion to benefit the U.S. Olympics. On a designated day, BMW drops off a bunch of cars to test drive. For each test drive, they give $10 to the Olympic teams. Plus, they give you a certificate good for $1,000 off any deal you make with the dealer for a BMW. You might want to check that out with your dealer(s).
She also said she had just taken in a 2011 535i xDrive with 3,000 miles in trade. Something about the owner decided to get a 7 series instead.
She said she could make me a whale of a deal on it. So, she's supposed to get back to me with the deal. I might be interested in something like that.
Still not certain I want to trade my car, though.
It was probably my fault for not being clear in my first post.
Some warranty work can be a nightmare for a store. The elusive rattle that never happens when the car is in the store, a "vibration" of some sort that only happens under certain conditions that the dealer can't replicate etc.
A "problem" that seems to bother one owner that 99 out of 100 wouldn't even notice. That sort of thing.
I've learned to live with certain things too and after awhile, they either went away or I tuned them out.
In defense of Honda, in all of the Hondas I've bought, I have yet to ever bring one back for the slightest of warranty issues.
The new domestics I used to buy were a completly different story.
Good luck on whatever you decide to do!
Nice guys, though.. .and they support the local BMWCCA chapter..

I concur with you regarding Honda/Acura products. They are some of the finest made cars I've ever owned. I was impressed with my Tahoe, too. But, it still wasn't up te the level of my (son's) Accord or my TL. Gotta say, the 8 years old Elantra that seems to still get use in the household has been pretty impressive, too. It's almost to the point where I hate to get rid of that car. First, it's not worth much. 2nd, we still seem to use it at least once/week to haul stuff, go to the airport to sit outside for days at a time, etc. We can't kill it.
kytfdx.....thanks for the input on the Lexington BMW dealer. I won't make a trip down there unless they have a smoking deal on that 3,000 mile 2011 535.
Went to your favorite dealer with my GF last weekend to see what they had. GF really, really liked the 650. I told her..."for someone so practical, you just picked out one of BMW's least practical cars to be smitten with. Plus, it's way, way out of my price range."
For grins, and just to see if I'd like it, I test drove a 1 series convertible. Now, that's a fun car. Too small for me, but fun, nonetheless.
In 1977, we bought a new Ford Granada...I know...don't say anything.
Before we left, the sales guy handed me a small notepad and told me to write down warranty issues as I spotted them.
He told me to be sure to wait a couple ofweeks as the list would surely grow.
And it did!
Funny thing because in those days, this was considered par for the course.
Richard
Driver, hope you have a great trip as well. Both of you keep us posted.

Richard-- I was about the same age as you when I had all four yanked. For year dentists would tell me that I didn't need it yet or that I had time. When the time finally did arrive I had the procedure, which was followed by the dreaded dry socket. When I went back to seek relief and confirm that I had followed the surgeons recommendations to the letter I was told, "Well, what do you expect? You're old and should have had the procedure done years ago!"
Uh, yeah.

A little update on that 3,000 mile 2011 535. Just spoke to the sales person. I was mistaken. It wasn't traded for a 7 series. It was traded for a 550i. Now, understand, I've made some foolish car purchases in my lifetime.
But, this one just takes the cake. Apparently, the original owner ordered it from the factory...with every conceivable BMW option offered on a 5 series, including the option where it "self-parks" itself. Once delivered, the MSRP came in at the upper $60s.
He kept it two months. Decided he wanted a 550i, equipped the same exact way.
Now, I don't know how much faster the 550i is over the 535i, but it can't be all that much.
Sales person said it can be bought for $56K. I'm thinking that number is really $55K. They probably have $51K-$52K in it.
Talk about a huge hit. I can't even fathom how that was justified. I'd kick myself every day if I made that sort of deal.
That's the problem with the anectdotal information that spreads through these forums. There are trends, but it's hard to put one 's finger on precisely what's happening with a given brand or model. So many poster's have a pro or con axe to grind over a given model's reliability or longevity (not you, roadburner).
My experiences are the mirror opposite of roadburners'. My 07 Mazda3 hatchback (not the speed version) has been flawless for the 4.5 years I have owned it. Not one issue (that wasn't caused by another driver or act of God). For the same 4.5 year period it's been even less trouble than the Civic I owned. My own German car foray, ended more with a whimper than a bang caused by repeated electrical and fuel glitches. It had numerous problems over the same period. It hasn't soured me on German cars, though.
By the way, has anyone seen the movie Passenger Side? Not that great a movie, but a substantial part of the narrative takes place inside a banged up mid-70s BMW 2002. If it was a better film I'd recommend it to roadburner because of his affinity for the 2002.

Richard--I'm getting those too, and from the same dealer. There must be some clearing house that sells these approaches to the various car dealerships. Last one I got had two keys so I have two chances to win--I like those odds!
Oddly enough, I was reading a review of that dealership written by some dumb [non-permissible content removed] who went in to see if he'd won a car and, instead came out with a new car financed to the hilt. Naturally he was furious, blamed the dealer and salesman. His mantra must be that personal responsibility is not something for which he is personally responsible.

Just checking in-thought I'd update the group on a few of my last posts...
1) Window saga- Window was installed today- Silverline double hung vinyl replacement windows- argon gas/low e.....Bought it from a local place- had a guy who handled friends replacements do it- whole deal took 3 hours to install/remove old crank window....
2) CRV- so far so good- wife loves the car- mileage isn't the best- but at this time its mostly driven 10 min at a time on a 5 miles or so trip.....otherwise the car is great.....feels so roomy inside -can't beleive its only a small CUV....
3) Richard- enjoy the trip- we were considering Jackson Hole for our honeymoon- beautiful there- some lovely scenery......including the reserve.....drive should be a blast in the SRX- just remeber to stop every so often to stretch out the legs....
4) Anyone care to share thoughts on gas- I recently came across the whole top tier gas argument- so I'm sticking to Shell first then Mobil/Exxon as they are only top tier in my area......no texaco/chevron/76 in my neck of the woods.... in a pinch i go BP.....
5) Coming up on the end of basic warranty on the camry - thinking of taking out extended warranty on it- there's a cpl places one in kansas one in Mass that sell them for near cost- make it up on volume.....according to forums I might be able to swing an additional 4 years/60K miles for $600 or so.....thoughts?
GG, Thanks for the tip...I have a feeling the test drive won't be available in Canada. That is a good marketing idea though.
The 535 could be worth a look. If you like big cars and that big car feel you will love the 535. It is like a big quiet cruiser but it has the horse power and cornering ability of a sport sedan. I think I will be more interested in 10 years from now......but you never know.
Dealer B said he would get back to me by the end of the week with pricing on a 2012 Cabriolet and with an idea of my trade-in. It is the end of the week, but I am not surprised, it could take awhile to pull those numbers together...not sure if they have a 2012 price guide yet.

I'd like to hear the Cadillac story, I can't believe it could be worse than Richard's experience.
Now, I don't know how much faster the 550i is over the 535i, but it can't be all that much.
There is probably only 30 or 40 hp difference, but it will probably mean a world of difference. I know driving my 328 compared to my wife's 335 makes a world of difference, and we are talking just 7 little numbers difference. Twin turbos make it into a completely different car. However, there is nothing wrong with a 535 and if you can get a fully loaded one for $55k, and if it is your thing, it is a fine car that I am sure you will enjoy driving. It was just too overwhelming for me......the electronics alone would take me years to master. The automatic gearshifter takes some getting used to...press a button and it goes into forward or reverse.
You do feel very safe in it though, and the car has maximum comfort. You can take a corner or ramp at any speed and it will stay flat, no body roll. It is worth a shot...nothing to lose yet!

Thanks for the good wishes on the trip...I am curious to see what rental car I get. I think we are supposed to get a Charger but you rarely get what you think you are getting.
I know you are going away but when do you start your 6000 mile journey to the bad lands.

It might be interesting to see if you can find out some history from the car.
Did they reset the MPG/DTE when filling up, current oil life, what kind of music did they listen to, etc...
One time we bought a phone with built in answering machine and several wireless extensions.
We could not get it to work, so I started just playing around with the phone base.
It had a 99 call history built into it.
The phone had at least 3 prior owners and I could see who their doctors were, where they ordered food from, who they got their prescriptions from.
I erased all of it before we returned it for a phone that actually worked.
We're leaving bright and early one week from today, the 25th. I'll take the lap top, but you know me and computers. Hopefully, I can check in now and then. We'll be back around July 20th. As for your rental car, hope you get a GM or a TC.
Richard
It did have a lot of workmanship issues but they were expected in those times.
I will try my best to get a GM or TC, I'll bask them to send the invoice to you to cover the difference....poor Fezo, there isn't going to be anything left.
Thanks for the good wishes...kind of a business trip and seeing children and grandchildren.
You'll be leaving when I get back so have a wonderful trip to the wild west.
