13k miles on my 2010 Prius and it drives pretty much like any mid-size car. Power mode changes the throttle response to minimize slow acceleration. Prius-Sentra- Corolla-Elantra -Civic--unless you are an enthusiast or write for an auto magazine, there isn't much difference in the way they drive for the average driver. I tested them all and the Prius had the most room and a hatch. Easy decision. To sum it up, the Prius drives smoothly with decent acceleration. No misery from my perspective. And trust me, I won't tolerate driving in misery.

I agree with everything you said.

Although I'm far from a Korean car fan, a lot of others are and Honda and Toyota better not trivilize this and be ready to do whatever it takes to build a better product.

I garee and I am slowly coming to grips with the fact that Hyundai has made massive strides.

    Maybe it's because I don't forget quickly.

Resale here on the West Coast is still dismal but I'm sure that will change too.

A Sonata over an Accord? When hell freezes over...for me!

Actually, being lean on inventory can be a good thing.

The cars will sell for what they are worth instead of having to mooch them out at 100.00 over invoice. I always hated that part.

Honda will do whatever it takes to remain the best in their class. I just hope they don't underestimate the competition.

I have watched markets "taken over" in the past by some dark horses that weren't expected to survive.

Someone asked if I miss the business?

I do miss the people I worked with. I had the same owner, GSM, NCM and UCM that I started with almost 14 years earlier. All great people! How many stores can say that? Most stores are a revolving door.

I worked with some great salespeople too. I consider most of these people to be good friends and I hope they always will be.

I don't miss the mooches, joyriders, unfriendly people and time wasters.

I was fortunate to have a bunch of great, loyal customers that made life tolarable.

I threatened to tell a couple lease tales from when I visited my middle brother over the Memorial Day week who has now retired to Florida.

    A refresher:

When my brother visited us here in the Burgh area in May 2009, Son #1 felt obligated to give his aunt a test drive in my recently acquired ’09 Genny V8 when he heard that she was about to turn in her ’06 Town Car but couldn’t find anything she liked. She drove my Genny and said she liked it and would consider buying one when they got back to Florida. I told my son she was just being kind so take those words with a grain of salt. Surprise, she leased an ’09 Genny V6 in June of 2009.

Fast forward to the third week of May 2011. My SIL gets one of those mailings from her dealership that says, ‘your car is worth more than you think. Even more than last year at this time, so please stop in for a great deal’. She calls the store and says, “why did I get this mailing, don’t you know that I’ve got 13 months left on my lease’? The salesman says, “yeah, but why not stop in and let me show you what we can do”. They are out a few days later and happen to be pretty close to the dealership and decide to stop in.

Here’s how it went and I took notes so I could get it right. Mrs j couldn’t believe I actually had her repeat what she said a couple times so I would have an accurate tale for you guys.

SIL: OK, here I am what can you do for me?

Sales guy (SG) after he has her car checked and goes to the desk…”This is great offer. I’m sure you’ll like it”.

    SIL: What is it?

SG: Give us $1500 and you drive home in a 2011 Genny V6 that is equal to what you have now. Your choice of 3 colors that we have in stock; Pearl White, Titanium Gray or Black.

Her car is a Pearl White ’09 Genny V6 with Tech Package with just under 18K miles. She said it was immaculate.

SIL: Are you kidding? I love my car why would I give you $1500 for a new one just like it.

SG: Because it’s 2 years newer and this is a great deal.

SIL: Like I said I love my car. Thanks anyway.

SG: Let me see what I can do to make this better for you.

He goes to the desk and returns pretty quickly.

SG: OK, this is pretty good. Give us $1K and you’re on your way.

SIL: I still don’t like that offer. I’ll say it again, I love my car. The only way I’ll turn it in is if you can lower my payments a little bit.

I’m laughing as she’s telling me this because I can’t believe what I just heard. My brother said he let her do all the talking because it was her car but he almost fell out of his chair when she said that. Based on what I thought I knew about car dealing, she should have killed any further discussions about the deal right then and there. This takes a lot of you know what. Anyway, the SG returns in about 10 minutes.

SG: You just got yourself a new car. We lowered your payments about $6 a month. :surprise: :confuse:

She chose the Titanium Gray Metallic with black interior because black on black was out of the question in Florida and she did not want another Pearl White with cashmere interior.

If this wasn’t my SIL telling me this and with a 2011 Genny in her garage, I wouldn’t believe it. In a way I still don’t. There has to be a ton of trunk money on leases for something like this to happen.

Next, my Brother turned in his ’08 Sebring convertible in February 2011. Nothing like this (how could it be) but there are two new 2011 cars in their garage. Retired life in Florida is pretty good these days.

That 2003 CRV has had not one problem nor did it have even one warranty repair done. The original brake pads are less than half worn out.

Oh, I didn't say for those who don't know, I'm in Washington State.

Not so much a geezer just don't go very far and my store was five miles from home.

It's a new car (2011 Genny V6 with Tech Package) and the clock started in May for 3 years.

What makes this deal somewhat believeable is that the 2012s were about to be released; based on what I heard. Might be released now.

You're a Florida guy so you could probably chime in here. The Genny's are not too prominent here in the North at least here in the Burgh area but they are all over the place in the Delray Beach area. No matter where we went there was always at least one in the parking lots. All V6's, I never saw one V8 although my brother said there was a V8 in his hood.

After they bought their '09 about 5 or 6 people in their retirement community bought one after they saw and drove my SIL's. In fact, right after they got their's and drove to the club one guy said, "did you get a Bentley"? I'm sure this was because they had the Wing Emblems on the hood and trunk. Which BTW, my SIL insisted that the 2011 had to have or the deal was off.

Ya know, I don't see me getting rid of that car too soon, Steve. :) It has been great. At 94k, I'm still on my original brakes and tires. I know I've said it around here before but I still have never had a tank of gas below 28 mpg (the city EPA rating under the old system) and very few under 30. Isell calls it a "rare duck" because of the leather, navi and stick but I love this car.

If it's anything like my '95, it will be around for quite awhile. ;)

    It's actually Atlantic Blue Metalic. There is one James Bond movie, Goldeneye, where James drives a BMW, only one and it is a Z3. That is the color of mine;

I meant to mention it last week, but forgot.

I got my annual invoice from Sirius a week or so ago and it was for $157.83 (plus a $2 "invoice fee"). I called them and told them I didn't want to continue service since I didn't consider 160 bucks of any value.

They made it the ole $77 plus $8.32 music royalty fee. :)

    Okay, here's my situation:

2000 Lincoln LS V6 Sport (manual trans, oil cooler, etc.) -- 127,983 miles
I should have sold this thing three or more years ago, but needed to replace some stuff & get it into shape. That's been done, so I just need to endure the Craigs List BS. The car was great and the last significant thing I did with it was to drive to Alaska & back in '07. Big a heavy, relative to the TSX I replaced it with, but still lots of fun.

    2004 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD -- 105,123 miles
Great vehicle. My wife drives it around town and we use it for its intended purpose once or twice a year in CO and/or the Sedona area. Nissan rules.

    2008 Acura TSX base w/ manual -- 50,124 miles
This has been my daily driver since I quit using the LS, and it's had no, as in zero, issues. Usually it doesn't matter that it's driven by the wrong pair of wheels, but when it does, it does. I'd have bought a BMW if it weren't for the timing of the RFTs and the no-dipstick approach to maintenance. My car's manual tells me how to do all kinds of DIY stuff. BMWs have blown that away long since.

In a perfect world I could buy a 3-series BMW wagon with a 2.0 or 2.5 litre diesel and a manual transmission.

Yeah, that's going to happen. I'll be driving the TSX for a long time, I think.

I suspect this once only $77 thingy can go on for a long time. I'll sure do my part to find out just how long but like I've said before, "I like XM and will pay full MSRP if I have to".

Like we've learned here..."if you don't ask, you don't get".

Edit: FWIW, I just went through this threat to cancel about a month ago but they caved again. Second time now, 2010 and 2011 (Got a year free with the '09 Genny).

cdn: Wow. You have a manual LS! That is rare. Did you special order it, or was it just on the lot. If you don't mind my asking, what did you pay then? Seems like you've gotten darn good service from it. What issues has it had over a dozen years and all those miles.

And what kind of mpg do you get in the LS compared to the TSX? Like that gen of TSX better than the new one I think.

Yeah, a BMW 3 series wagon would be sweet. But those engines you mention aren't available here, are they? Can you special order and take delivery of that non US spec model in Germany and bring it here??? Like you, I enjoy manuals.

Man, my car "collection" is boring compared to some of you....I am really envious!
BUT...I am 73 and have been retired for 9 years.
We have two cars...a non-exciting 2003 Camry XLE 4 cylinder owned since new with 97,000 kms. (60,000 miles) on it. Runs like it came out of the box with zero problems.
The 2nd car is a 2011 Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited. We use this to tow our new Aliner Classic trailer (a pop-up with no canvas). We are off to Algonquin Park on Tuesday.
Love all your stories...stay well everyone.

Thanks graphicguy...we used to do the "tent trailer" camping bit in the 60's when we only had 4 kids...went camping with a 6 year old, 4 year old twins and a two year old. What an adventure. Then #5 came along and the trailer was just too small...so it went by-by.
Later we got into boating.... very cool 28 foot SeaRay....had it berthed in Oakville (just west of Toronto) on Lake Ontario. We had several trips to the Thousand Islands and also up the Trent System using the locks...great fun!
Then moved it up to Georgian Bay...got tired of avoiding rock shoals and bought a cottage in Muskoka with water access...another adventure that lasted 12 years. The kids started having their own kids....two moved far away so we sold the cottage.
Now it is our turn to have some fun while we are still "young". My wife and I are fortunately quite healthy....many of my golfing friends are facing health issues....so let's get out and smell the roses.

Doug....good for you. I did the "boat thing" for awhile. I had a 42 foot Bluewater Coastal Cruiser. Used to take it on the Ohio, and Licking Rivers. Really enjoyed it for awhile. But, during just about every Summer weekend, it seemed I was spending as much time cleaning/maintaining the boat as I was enjoying it on the water. Both for good and for bad, there were plenty of weekends where I was sleeping on the boat from Friday night until Sunday night. I had to either be at the docks early in the a.m. to do some sort of maintenance. It had a bedroom, a bathroom and a shower, so instead of driving home, I just stayed on board.

The downside to that, the dock folks know you're there. So, do your friends. They had a habit of casually stopping by, without having to do any of the work.

Not that I'm a financial wiz, but I had a "gut feel" when the economy was looking gloomy a few years ago. I sold the boat right before the economy tanked. I'd say that there would have been a $30K, maybe $40K (maybe even more) difference in what I sold it for and what I might have had to discount it to after the big crash.

Shortly after that, gas prices shot way up. So, that cost would have probably doubled, too.

Had a lot of fun on it. But, I also worked a lot on it. All-in-all, the old adage was true for me....the two best times you have when owning a boat was the day you buy it, and the day you sell it.

    Have fun in your travels.

How is the Outback? To me, that is the ideal car for this latitude. Economical to run, AWD, quite a bit of room for trips, easy size to manouevre around town, probably big enough for highway driving.

I would really consider one if I was in that market. I am surprised they don't outsell a lot of other cars like Toyota.

Have fun in Algonquin Park. I know most people love it there. I am not that adventurous, I like a real bed, a memory foam mattress, a TV and radio near the bed, and lots of indoor plumbing.

This guy I was talking to bought a trailer like this type when he was in Florida last winter.

That I thought was interesting was the trailer sales place also has a branch in Georgia, for a very good reason. Once he agrees to buy the trailer, the company has people who drive the trailer up to Georgia, where all the paperwork takes place. Huge tax savings if they buy in Georgia...I think 8% or so which adds up on a $50k unit!

    Cute trick!

I'm trying to remember if I ever even saw an EXL Navi. I think we got one by accident once and were very relieved when another store wanted it on a dealer trade. Heck, it might be the one you bough!

Nothing "wrong" with these, just super hard to sell.

They don't even make EXL non navis with sticks anymore. Just not enough demand for them.
  • dougb10dougb10 Member Posts: 185
Hi Driver....the 2011 Outback is a gem...we had two previous Outbacks...a 1997 and a 2005...both 4 cylinder. Knowing we were going to pull the trailer which weighs 1500 lbs. empty, the 4 cylinder would be a real slug.
The new one with the 3.6 pulls it seamlessly and because the Aliner trailer has electric brakes, stopping is not a problem.
As far as we are concerned Subaru got it right with this one. Far more comfortable...the 2005 was very narrow and it was kind of tight for me (I am 6 feet and 220). My wife (who drives the Subie more than me) is 5'2" and is 125...she found the old one just fine but really loves the giddyup of the 256 hp.
We have about 10,000 kms. on the new one....one oil change and no issues at all. We did not renew the Sirius radio because we rarely used it.

But Honda does now make the Civic Sedan Si Navi with the Acura TSX engine. 0-60 in 6.9. Faster than you need to go, I know, but...

I did the "boat thing" for awhile.

I did too. I had a 23 foot Formula. Kind of an offshore power boat.

It had Outriggers, Cuddy Cabin, Fighting Chair and a scary powerful engine.

Wife and I went out on a perfect calm day in Chesapeake Bay.

That turned into a storm with 6 foot waves. Once my sunglasses

blew off from a wave crash all bets were off. I hit the no wake zone

coming into Linkhorn Bay at 50+ MPH. All I wanted was parked!

I did catch a 7 foot shark, but we were too scared to bring it on board.

Wow! Two Navi sticks on one forum?

Seriously, our store was the highest volume Honda store in nine states and I can't remember us ever selling one.

They may have sold better in other parts of the ocuntry with fewer hills and less traffic.

    Mako....cool!

Every once in awhile I take a trip down to my old marina. Probably 5x the amount of "For Sale" signs there now than when I docked there.

    Tough times for boaters.

Holy, I am looking at a 535...could the aunt come up here and negotiate for me?

My SIL is not bashful (never was) but I never knew she was quite like that. Mrs. j even got a kick out of hearing her tale. I told her that I’d like to take her with me the next time I buy since she was so good at this. I suggested that the next time they visit the Burgh would be a good time (they plan to do this in August). That’s when Mrs. j didn’t think it was so funny anymore. :(

My brother who turned in his ’08 Sebring convertible and leased a Volvo C70 because the Chrysler dealer just would not deal, said he should have taken her with him when he got it in February but since that would be his car he left her at home like he usually does when he gets his cars but added he won’t do that again !

I'll pay her $1000 to negotiate a deal like that...then the new car would cost her nothing!

Like I said they are do into the Burgh sometime in August and I could farm her out for a price. Since I know you I’ll give you the Edmunds discount on my end but you’re on your own to negotiate what fee she wants for herself. I’m betting you're going to lose that one.

she found the old one just fine but really loves the giddyup of the 256 hp.

Wow! I only have 230 hp in the 328. How do they do that? Do they have a turbo?

I don't know if you got the Suburu at Budd's in Oakville, but my BMW came from Budd's next door. The fellow who drives the shuttle bus drives customers from both places, and he said the people who buy Suburus just love them.

I forgot to add, reasonably priced and high rating for safety. It would be at the top of my list of cars to try out in that market.

You boat guys are driving me crazy. I'd love on but haven't ever been able to do it.

Doug's my newest guy to envy - that Subaru with trailer sounds just about perfect.

Right now I'm keeping priorities at getting myself well and try to keep us financially above water during the process. I've had enough health flare ups that it's always an issue but this one is the king of them.

Meanwhile today was going to a plop myself in the ocean but I've got a bug that's taken the whole weekend. Oh, well. I gotta move somewhere with a longer ocean season.

No turbo on the Subaru, but it is a pretty large displacement...it also runs on regular gas and it is very efficient. I have always enjoyed the Boxer engines which are placed flat and lower to the ground.
Yes, I got it from Budd's Subaru in Oakville and have had our three Outback's serviced there.
They have done very well on our trade-ins. The '97 Outback Limited was traded in 2005 with 83,000 kms. It was so clean they put it in the showroom.
The '05 Outback Limited was traded in a year ago on the 2011 with only 42,000 kms. on it.....I know they made a killing on it.
Could we have done better on a private sale?...quite probably....but it can be a pain to sell privately (have done this MANY times over the years). But all the cowboy test drivers trying to nickle and dime you, plus safety checks, emission tests, and paying for the Ontario seller's package is annoying.
Also, I got a pretty fair deal on the new car with some goodies thrown in...a no hassle deal period. And the biggest reason of all is saving 13% tax on the trade-in portion of the deal.
I have a good relationship with the Service Manager if there is any problem.

Hmmm, didn't think of that. Doug lives within about 10 miles of me. Guess if I pull up to an Outback at a traffic light I won't try to race him. It could be embarassing.
