That being said, you will LOVE your Subaru! My Father-In-Law is on his 3rd. His 1st was an '06 LL Bean Outback that he traded in after getting one of those "we're looking for good used Subarus..." letters. He bought an '08 LL Bean Outback. Last year he made a left turn into a Porsche Boxster & totaled it. He leased a '10 4cyl outback & is very happy with it. Good luck & keep us in the loop.
So you are going to keep your beloved Genisis?

Yes. I don't plan to replace it because it is a very nice car and so far I have not had a mechanical problem with it (just the audio amp) but if you asked me a month ago I would have said the same thing about the XG 350.
I'm mileing up the Genny pretty good since March of '09. It now has just a few tics over 34K miles. Almost all of which have been from driving to and from work on the PA Turnpike. The XG 350 blew up at a little over 41K miles so when I approach that marker on the Genny guess what I'll be thinking.

Right now I'm driving a van that has had an engine replacement. The old neighbor I bought it from said the motor was replaced with a brand new factory job at 95K miles. He couldn't locate the paperwork to prove it but I took him at his word. Really didn't matter if it was a new engine or not since the van is an old hooptie (I posted a photo a while ago). My mechanic said it looked new so, what the heck. It has about 128K on it now and it runs, which is all I want out of a $900 vehicle.
As to your wife's car, I had to look up what an XG-350 was. I wasn't sure if it was a sports car or a SUV. Edmunds said it has "flaccid" handling so it doesn't sounds like a car that would flatter my ego.
Still, if you pop in a brand new engine and sell it to me with or without a wax job for 900 bucks, I think we can do business.
I would have to meet this "Mrs. jmonroe" though. You could be just flipping titles. :P

Do you have a recipe for that chocolate tiramisu? Would you be willing to share it? I have made the traditional tiramisu for years and would like to make something different.
Thank you.

:P
Keep in mind that I can't remember the last time I followed recipe instructions to the letter (I didn't measure the coffee liqueur [Kahlua] or the vanilla, for example). It's not that far off, recipe-wise, than traditional.
24 ladyfingers (I found them at World Market)
1 cup freshly-brewed espresso (any strongly-brewed coffee works)
2 tablespoons coffee liqueur
3 oz bittersweet chocolate (sold in the baking section in squares)
1 8 oz carton mascarpone cheese
1 cup whipping cream
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
A little bit more of the coffee/liqueur
Mix the espresso and coffee liqueur in a shallow dish. Dip each of the 12 ladyfingers into the mixture for about 5 seconds each (take 'em out before they get soaked all the way through. Best done one at a time). Put them in a single layer in the bottom of the dish.
Microwave the chocolate just until fully melted. Set aside to cool.
In a big bowl, beat the mascarpone cheese, whipping cream powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form. Add a little liqueur & coffee, if desired and mix. Then add melted chocolate and mix just until combined.
Spoon half of that mixture across the top of your ladyfingers in the dish. Then, do another layer of the dipped-in-coffee ladyfingers on top. Then spoon the rest of the mixture on top of that.
Cover and place in refrigerator for at least 6 hours.
To garnish, I took a leftover piece of chocolate and used a potato peeler to shave it into flakes/curls on top. You can also top with chocolate-covered coffee beans.
That's the first dessert that got completely eaten out of the three we had on offer, so it was a hit with our chocolate/coffee fans.

That's a good price, especially for a Samsung. I don't know if it is worth lining up though. And, there is something a little bit off about some of the bargains offered. For example, this TV, and this is just my opinion....plazma although possibly better than LCD in most respects don't sell as well (too heavy for one thing, and now the newer LED TVs are the up and comers), and in many cases there will be a newer version on the market. I think this is a way Sams/Wallymart use to put pressure on the manufacturer to drop the price and do a clearout of older inventory so they can sell the newer models at a higher price.
It's OK but not as good as it seems. For example, my SIL saw a laptop computer at a good price at Wallymart. At the last moment she saw a computer from the same manufacturer, a lot more RAM and memory for $50 more online. Better to pay $50 more and get the better computer than try to buy one at midnight.
She got 2 32" TVs for $188 each. That's OK but probably would be worth $100 or so to get a better mark, after all, you do have to watch the TV and you might as well get a brighter sharper picture. These TVs last 20 years so a better TV might cost $5 a year more.

We also prefer the led sets..but I might take a plasma over a regular lcd.

You guys are killing me.
My Sony 50 inch LCD that I bought in January of ’06 (lamp replaced last January) has a ‘blue mountain’ at the bottom that has been growing at an increasing rate for the last 2 weeks and will have to be replaced pretty darn soon. I am interested in a Samsung 55 inch LED that now has a price of $1100 at Best Buy but was $1500 two weeks ago. I knew the TV was going for about 2 months now and would need replaced so that was no surprise.
We have all heard the old saying that bad things come in 3’s. Well that ain’t no saying, it’s a fact; at least for me.
(1) XG 350 that needs replaced because the engine blew up
(2) the TV I just mentioned, and
(3) the bath redo that Mrs. j still hasn’t taken off her list
What a hellava way to end the year. You guys wanna jinx me on anything else while you’re at it? Hanging out in this place is getting to be dangerous.
As for doing my own oil changes on the Genny, yes I will still do it. Receipts for the XG350 were not the problem at least they didn’t have to dig that deep because of a mileage “discrepancy” that was found on my oil log sheet. FWIW, I do have all my receipts for the oil and filter for the Genny. I have to get the filter at the dealer because the auto parts stores I have gone to in my area don’t stock it even though they show a Purolator number for it. :confuse:
Going to get the Subie tomorrow in Columbus (not quite 4 hours from the Burgh) with the same threesome (me, Mrs. j and Son #1) that went to get the Genny just outside of Akron in ’09. We’re supposed to have nice weather the whole way. I hope I’m not too tired on Sunday because Son #2 wants me to install a water heater for him. Maybe I should ask our poster buddy, that plumber car guy from New York (now residing in Conn.), to do that job for him while I sleep in.

I thought that was a great idea to put everything in writing concerning the XG 350, and I would send copies to Hyundai and the dealer...and maybe the local TV station.
Be firm, but reasonable as it might end up being exhibit #1 for Judge Judy. Be sure to work in that quote from the dealer saying this was as clean an engine as they had seen.

When I took my 2011 Explorer in for a regular service 40 miles away, even the SA said 'You really drove this far to get it serviced?'.
I guess that means all the dealers in your area are really bad for sales and service? :confuse:
DealerStealer which I purchased our 2011 Pilot from (and serviced it once). You all remember about a month ago I posted a story about bringing my treasured & beloved 2001 Honda Prelude Type SH to the aforementioned HondaDealerStealer for an alignment & a problem with the heat (slider stuck in the blue).I received a call from the service manager explaining that the heater needs 2 new cables ($30 a piece he said, more like $8 - $10) which would require 5 hours of labor (@ $110/ hour) to repair. No thanks I said. I only drive the car once a week and don't have that kind of money to spend on a 3rd car right now.
Then he told me that my car could not be properly aligned because a myriad of suspension components needed to be replaced including: all 4 lower front ball joints, all front sway bar links, front sway bar bushings.
In addition to this, he told me the front engine mount was shot and causing undo stress on the other 2 engine mounts.
He also told me my clutch was on its way out due to its high take up & heavy engagement.
This amounted to thousands of dollars worth of work which I was not prepared to spend at that point in time. I thought it sounded like a lot of work and maybe the car is due for stuff like that at 144K miles & 9.5 years.
I started looking up suspension diagrams and motor mount diagrams for my Prelude. I found the web site that sells Genuine Honda parts the cheapest & was prepared to order them & have my mechanic install them.
He actually came by my store today to purchase a few items. I told him what work I wanted to get done & asked him if he could do it next week. "Sure Bradd, just bring the parts over when you're ready."
"Before you go and order all that stuff, let me take a look at your car. I'll take it back to the shop & put it up on the lift."
He calls me an hour later telling me "your front end is super tight, especially for a car with this many miles on it. I wouldn't worry about the ball joints at all. Motor mounts are fine too. Your oil is a bit low & tires are wearing on their inside edge. Get new tires & I'll put 'em on for you, then get an alignment. Car will be good as new."
Now I know Craig will say "someone else told you what you wanted to hear, so now you're going to say the dealer tried to rip you off."
This is not trying to sell me an $80 paper air filter when I bring the car in for an oil change. They wanted to charge me THOUSANDS of dollars to fix my car that has NOTHING WRONG WITH IT!
Long Live the Prelude!

I'm all over the lot with how I want to persue this. I'm also over the initial shock that a dealer and a car company could be so unreasonable about something that seemed to me and others I spoke with would be a slam dunk in my favor. I'm glad I wasn't in dire need of money for getting a car and had to do anything possible to keep the one that blew.
As for quoting what someone SAID, I think that would be hearsay and wouldn't carry much weight in any court or discussion with any one I was aguring agaist. I'm not a layer but I think this is how that works. Possibly the 'judge' or the law school student we have in here could weigh in about this. However, in the end, the engine could do all the talking for me and thus be my best witness. I'm also pretty sure that once I take that car off the dealers lot and then try to present the engine as my witness, I'll be accussed of "tampering with the evidence" and I will lose for sure. More for the 'judge' to consider.
Anyway, like I said I'm over that initial stuff so maybe now I can have some fun with this.
You guys will be the second to know how it goes.

I had one of those Sony's with a bulb. Bulb cost $250 to replace and it needed replacing twice in one year.
The new LCDs should last for 20 years....longer than what you will want it for, soon there will be real 3D TV and present TVs will be obsolete. We got a 40 LED TV with 3D and has wifi so it can be used as a monitor. Not so cheap but at $588 it is pretty state of the art....it is a Philips which I have had pretty good luck with.
Keep those receipts for the Gennie, you don't want to have to dig through old videos. I keep receipts in a box for years...it won't be easy but it should be there.

That ain't nothin. Son #2 went to Cincy (almost 6 hours from the Burgh) to get his Kia Sedona in the spring. This same son went to Columbus to get his 0'6 Mazda 6 in '08. Not to leave Son #1 out of this since he was the first in our family to go out of state to get his car, an Altima (can't remember the year right now) just outside of DC in Northern Virginia. So I guess you can say the jmonroe family is kinda used to this.
When I took my 2011 Explorer in for a regular service 40 miles away, even the SA said 'You really drove this far to get it serviced?'.
I'm not going to go far at all to get my Subaru serviced. For convenience I'm going to the same mega delaership where I got the Hyundai but I was thinking of going about 20 miles away for having it serviced until I spoke to the guy I work with that has bought 5 Subaru's at this place and he swears up and down that this Subaru store's service dept. is top notch. I'll have to see that to believe it but I'm willing to start off there.
I guess that means all the dealers in your area are really bad for sales and service?
I just answered that the local Subaru store is OK for sales and service but the car I wanted had to be a 6 cylinder in the color I wanted. Nothing special, a Limited in bright silver with black leather interior, but there were NONE in the Pitttsburgh area. Lots of 4's but no 6's. Believe me I looked, plenty and so did Son #1. He likes doing this and he kept increasing his internet radius search of Pittsburgh until the one and only one in Columbus popped up. I have no idea why that combo is so rare but it is, at least right now, around here. I know, you're going to find 6 or 7 near you but I won't travel that far for any car, no way.
Like I said before the weather is supposed to be nice so we should have a pleasant ride. I gotta get to bed pretty soon, long day ahead tomorrow.

I always say, "A good mechanic is worth his weight in gold". You have a real special find there. It's too bad that car dealers all try to sell you stuff you don't need.
I called the BMW person who sells all the insurance and said I didn't want the run flat tire insurance for $1700. She said, that could be a big mistake, new tire $600 and a rim $900 each time. These are scare tactics. It could happen, but the odds are against it happening, I'll take my chances. If you ran your life this way, you would insure everything.
You have to have liability insurance on your car and insurance on a home...those costs are too much to risk...but everything else forget it.
I wish I had all the insurance money I paid out over the years, that would cover a lot of flat tires.

Plymouth is near Maine. They probably had lobsters.
I don't think the Pilgrims knew you could eat them then. I wonder how the first guy who ate a lobster found out they were edible? I also doubt the Pilgrims realized lobster tastes so good with butter. I wonder when they discovered that?
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
According to the tour at Plimouth Plantation, lobster was eaten but only in times of need. There was plenty of other better food like venison, duck and cod to eat. Lobster was often used as bait.
Almost everything tastes better with butter!
NYC, I knew it was odd that all those front end parts would be needing replacement at the same time.
J, good luck with the Subaru purchase! Its a shame of the events leading up to it, but hopefully you can either get a response out of Hyundai corporate or at least get some $$ for it as a parts cars/mechanics special.

Good. With a little practice you'll be doing donunts like I told you. Don't forget to yell and shake your fist at them as well. :P
Seriously, if you want to maintain a chain of evidence have the shop who will examine your motor pick up the car at the dealer and document that you haven't tampered with it in any way. Then if you have to go to court you have objective third parties who can offer statements of fact.
I'm sure the Hyundai suits will still try to say you monkyed with it by ESP but at least you'll be on firmer ground.

IIRC lobster was first fed to slaves because European settlers considered them to be trash fish that fed on the bottom. If caught in fish nets they were thrown back. They also thought tomatoes were poison. Wonder how they didn't starve. :confuse:

But something like what Hyundai is trying to do could devastate someone in less fortunate circumstances...and all of us have probably been there at some point in our lives. That is what burns me up about this deal.
I know it is easy to give someone else advice, but I really hope you take these guys to the wall on this. Teach them a lesson and let them know that they are screwing with the wrong guy.
I would also ask for them to put their reasons for denying your warranty claim in writing. It will be good to have...and it will start them to thinking.

My position is that: if one can't afford a set of tires on their car, they can't afford the car. Insurance is to insure one from catastrophic losses, not ones that pinch.
