I'm far from a cell phone expert, but the better half wants to go "IPHONE" for the holidays. So I look into this new fangled technology called the Iphone 4S and here's what I find:

AT&T needs to be nuked. She's due for a free upgrade, but they charge a $18 "UPGRADE" fee which should really be called a "change anything and we charge you $18 fee" since you could downgrade your phone (say from a 4s to 3Gs) and you'd still be charged that fee.

Second, at least in CA, manufacturers put on a super obcenely high MSRP price on their phone so that the State can collect extreme sales tax. These $200 phones (which is already high in my mind since most phones are "free" or under $50 these days with a 2 year contract purchase), actually go for $699.99 MSRP. In CA they made a rule that you pay sales tax on that figure and not what you actually end up paying.

Imagine if the Big 3 did that, you go in to negotiate your new car price, work them down from 32K to 27K, and then get told you'll pay 7.75% on the full 32K! Ridiculous.

Cell Phone companies must be the next Wall Street and Enron.

Now hear this. My prediction is the cell phone industry will receive the next round of gov't bailouts when they too, become too big to fail like GM and Chrysler.

Wouldn't know there's a recession though, Target said they were selling these things like hot cakes. I had to go to 3 different Target store locations to find a "white one" and there's only two available colors total.

That's a great story, Richard. I'll echo the other comments made about your wife. We had a black housekeeper who came over a couple of times per week. When she died my mom and I went to the funeral. Sadly, we were the only white people present. That said, her granddaughter and I still keep in touch.

Back in the late 60's, it was no picnic here in the Northeast.
There were riots and curfew's at night in a lot of cities.
You could probably ask your dad about that.

A couple weeks later than when we usually get a Xmas tree. Lowes would not go down on a couple 7-8' Douglas Firs, priced at $39. The trees didn't have a whole lot on the tree Charlie Brown picked out. Sales clerk called the manager, he says bah humbug.

Went to a private produce lot. Frazier Firs are listed at $69-$79 (today $10 off). They look nice, but the Jip don't pay 79 bucks for a tree that will be shredded in 2-3 weeks. I offer $49. The old bitty in charge of the trees in quite rude. She laughs and walks off. They still have over a 100 trees on the lot. Maybe this year I'll get one of those shiny new aluminum trees.

Closed on the house Friday. Glad it is over. House was only on market about 4 months. Listed on MLS only 3 weeks before it sold. Flat fee relators are the way to go. :)

If you lived through it you don't forget the burning of our cities. The ones that stand out in my memory are Detroit (because of the ferocity) and Newark (because it was only 20 some miles away).

Gordon Lightfoot did a very thoughtful (keep in mind the time) song on the Detroit riots - Black Day in July.

I was a freshman in college at the time. I learned a great life lesson from the president of our university at the time.

That day all hell broke loose on almost any campus. A group took over the administration building and specifically the president's office. Our governor at the time was going to call out the NJ National Guard to clear it which would have had us in the same situation.

The president said, no, These students are my invited guests and are free to stay as long as they wish. Totally defused the situation. I was a news reporter (and moreso a DJ but never mind that) on our college radio station. Press pass in hand (just in case the governor did something silly anyway) I go up to the president's office and find two guys I went to high school at his desk. I patched them through on the office phone to do a live interview over the air. Like a lot of people they just didn't know what to do or where to be at that moment and that's where they ended up.

    Strange days.

We've come a long way in the South during the last sixty years....but still not as far as we should.

What a wonderful story you wrote. You could write "The Help, Part 2". You and your wife deserve a lot of credit.

Hard to believe people could be treated the way they were in the movie, just like property. Thank goodness we have progressed from that time, at least in our great countries.

I'm poking around looking at used cars, and ended up on autotrader. Find an interesting on over in PA, private sale.

Well, this owner must have paid extra for some VIP package. The ad always shows as a feature at the top of the list. And on top of that, they seem to offer a filtering service (as part of the VIP treatment).

I call the #, and end up (after a bit of hold time) in a call center. And of course, I did not have all the obscure info needed (I had written down the # at home, and called during the day at work). Turns out, without the ad ID or zip code, they can't "find" the car. So, I ended up having to spend time logging in (slow in the office) to retrieve the MOTA ID. (ad #),

Finally, they track down the listing, and after asking me a series of questions (am I interested in buying or trying to sell something - if I was the latter, how do you think I was going to answer?), graciously decide to patch me through. But, 10 minutes into the process, they don't answer! So they relay my contact info and send an email to the guy, who of course has not bothered to call back since yesterday.

If the alternative hadn't been going back to work, no way I go through these hoops.

I get not wanting to be hassled, but if you are trying to private sell for the $, you accept the hassle. This process was just arrogant and rude really. Like they were doing me a favor granting me an audience with a dude selling an overpriced car!

Richard - I should add myself to the list of folks that have commented on your post. Great story well told. You and your wife deserve a load of credit.

I don't know how things are in the south these days. In the mid 70s I was in grad school in Tallahassee which, though it is the capital of Florida, may as well be in Georgia or Alabama in a lot of ways. My experience at that time was that relationship between races was different than up north but not better or worse. Clearly a lot of the civil rights laws had a decade to sink in and of course the city and the university were as we say now blue state vs everything around it for 200 miles being red state.

Tallahassee would still be a place I wouldn't mind living. I loved my time down there and except for about six weeks of what was then the coldest winter in the history of Florida I loved the weather.

Still feel bad when I hear this Song

At the law school I attended we always had a variety show in the spring called "The Libel Show". During my tenure the show had an extremely edgy reputation(the shows were so politically incorrect that they would never be tolerated today). Having said all that, parody songs were a staple of the show, and in 1982 one of the bands performed "Ohio" with the following lyrics:

    Pete Townshend and Daltrey's comin'
    Cincinnati will rock and roll;
    I see the bodies tumblin'
    Eleven dead in Ohio.

If anyone tried that today they'd probably be sent to a re-education camp...

Richard, that is a wonderful story, and coming from you, it does not surprise me in the least. Some people just always do the right thing.

My wife and I also grew up in the South and my wife's family also had a nanny/housekeeper for many years, who they were all very fond of.

My wife's dad was smart enough to realize (remember, this was back in the 50's) all the implications of the Social Security Administration even back then.

He saw to it that "Nell" applied for and got a social security # and he paid all of her SS taxes for the many years she worked for them. She lived to be in her 90's and got that SS check every month....and you have never seen a more grateful person.

Well, the end result wasn't what we all had hoped to hear, but now you can move on and enjoy a truly great car in the Subie.

Like I said before what I wanted to do wasn’t legal so I stopped that thought. I still want to see my grandchildren grow up and see the bath redo completed that Mrs. j is about to get started on.

We are still getting used to the Subie. It has a couple options that I haven’t had on any car so far. Even the Genny doesn’t have these; 1) puddle lights (which I mentioned before) and 2) a “hill holder”. For those that don’t know what this is I’ll explain.

There is a button on the lower dash with a car shown on an incline (icon). You push this button to enable the “hill holder” feature and you get the same icon displayed on the instrument panel in green. Once it is set, when you are on a hill (up or down) and you apply the brakes hard enough when you stop, the emergency brake is applied and you also get the red brake warning light on the dash that you get when you apply the emergency brake. If the radio is off and you listen closely you can hear a motor run as it pumps up the brake fluid, actuating the calipers which in turn grabs the rear rotors. You can now take your foot off the brake waiting for traffic to move (the car will not drift). One you’re ready to go again all you have to do is step on the accelerator and the brake automatically releases and you’re on your way. The system does not turn off until you manually hit the button again. Therefore, the “hill holder feature is still enabled for all subsequent stops on a hill. Note that on a level surface the “hill holder” is not in play. It seems to be smart enough to know when you’re not on a hill.

You should have seen the look on Mrs. jmonroe’s face when I showed her this. She said, “do you really think I’m going to play with that contraption”? I have no idea why car manufactures have to put things like this on cars. I have heard that trucks have had this for years so I guess they think that cars need them now too. I for one have never had a sore leg keeping my foot on the brake pedal while stopped on a hill for all the years that I have been driving. Maybe they know people are getting older and now need some help; who knows?

I've been sharing your story of Hyundai's warranty refusal with my own friends and family. To say people are shocked is an understatement, and coupled with my own Hyundai dealership/corporate warranty experience, has left me cold on the brand.

Thanks for spreading the word to your friends and family as to how Hyundai treats customers with warranty issues. FWIW, even being a 3 time customer like me in 7 years meant nothing to them. Everyone that has heard my story is also “shocked”. I think some of them have to be thinking...‘there has to be more about this than he’s telling me’...but it is EXACTLY the way I tell it. Namely, a technicality with an oil log entry even though everyone that I talked to at the dealership readily admits that the engine was not only clean but it was “VERY CLEAN”; hard to believe but true. What experience have you had with Hyundai dealers/corporate?

When are you going to take delivery of your Subie, it can’t be too long now? Tell me again what model you’re getting because I forgot. Will your new Subie have the “hill holder” feature? Still can’t fully understand the need for that one.

  • What experience have you had with Hyundai dealers/corporate?

I owned a 2006 Sonata LX, the first year of the new model and first batch to leave the new Alabama plant. Up to that model's release I swore I wouldn't own a Hyundai, but comparing it against the other options in its class I was won over. I went to the dealer for the first oil change, and after a quick discussion with the mechanic and service adviser, realized I knew more about the vehicle than they did. So I cancelled the appointment and performed my own service, and every other one right up until I sold it 5 years later. I even swapped out the fuel tank filters (2) that the dealership chose to ignore due to the PITA location.

Fast forward a few years from that initial experience and I'm in the dealership to have a few minor warranty issues addressed. The service adviser looks up my account and makes a comment that I haven't used them for service, and that could pose a problem for future warranty coverage on mechanical issues. I point out I keep every part/filter/fluid receipt, log every maintenance interval, and stick to the "severe" service schedule. He states it doesn't matter. Plus I have to follow THEIR recommended schedule, not the book's schedule.

So I contacted Hyundai to let them know they have an abusive dealer. Hyundai played political and generally supported the dealer. It worried me a bit, but I figured (incorrectly as it turns out) that if push came to shove, my documentation and rigorous maintenance schedule and procedures would prevail. I've never had a problem with self-maintenance with Toyota, Honda, Dodge, Subaru, or Mazda. Just Hyundai, it seems.

Your experience has taught me that Hyundai will indeed play hard ball and clearly violate Magnuson-Moss.

Subie is the best corporate parent I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with and I can't wait for our new Impreza to arrive. We're scheduled for a January delivery of our Limited 5-door model in marine blue, which indeed does come with the hill-holder feature, though I'm not certain how it works compared to the Legacy. The Impreza has a manual parking brake lever versus the electrically-activated push-button version in the Legacy. I'm fairly certain the hill-holder and parking brake are related. I'll be very interested to see how the feature works in a month.

Yesterday I pre-purchased our paint protection film so we can get the roll coming from Avery (Nano Fusion, which is in high-demand and tough to get right now). I'll target to pick up the Impreza in the AM, and immediately drive it to our chosen shop for installing the paint protection film on the bumper, hood, headlights, and fenders. Utah road gravel (we foolishly call it "salt") is tough on paint. My next stop will be to swap out the tires to a Continental ExtremeContact DWS. And then we enjoy it :D

I think one thing you, jmonroe, and everyone else in here need to remember, is the overall state of the worldwide economy , and thus the auto industry, is at an alltime low. Goodwill warranty work dealership's may have been able to provide in the past, they can no longer afford. The grey areas, like jmonroe's, they will no longer cover.

Five years ago Mazda did some out of warranty work on our MPV for free. A couple years ago, on a poorly desgined ignition coil, they gave nothing.
So it is more likely that dealerships refusal to do questionable warranty work may be due more to a lack of money (from manufacturer)... rather than being an "abusive" dealership.

I've been lucky enough for them to pay 1/2 on some recent issues...i asked for the whole amount but took the 1/2 they offered. At least with me, Honda did the right thing.

I really don't look at jmonroe's case to be in a gray area. I could forgive a gray area call.

They put those on AT cars too? why? It only makes sense to me on a manual trans.

The only AT I ever had that really rolled is our Odyssey, since Honda just does ATs a bit different.

I owned a 2006 Sonata LX, the first year of the new model and first batch to leave the new Alabama plant.

Brilliant minds think alike. Mrs. j had an ’06 Sonata LX too. We got ours in April of 2006 so I doubt that it was in the early batch that yours came from. That’s the car I traded in for my ’09 Genny. It was trouble free except for a windshield washer fluid motor and 2 warped front rotors which were both covered without a problem under warranty. I guess Hyundai likes to play the part of the big-shot with the little stuff. I bought the Sonata from a different dealer than the one I had the XG350 problem with. However, since that dealer is about 20 miles from where I live I had it serviced at the problem dealership. I honestly think if I had the XG350 towed to the dealer where I got the ’06 Sonata I wouldn’t have had the same problem but for the sheer sake of convenience I went to the local guy. From everything I have ever heard about the other dealer they are very good with both sales and service.

When I traded the Sonata it had just turned 13K miles on the drive over to the dealer in Ohio just outside of Akron where I got the Genny (I live just outside of Pittsburgh). I must have a thing for Ohio dealers because I got the Subie in Columbus. :confuse:

I went to the dealer for the first oil change, and after a quick discussion with the mechanic and service adviser, realized I knew more about the vehicle than they did. So I cancelled the appointment and performed my own service, and every other one right up until I sold it 5 years later.

Again, brilliant minds must think alike. We might be the only ones in here that do our own oil changes. If you want to know why I do them, go look at posts 1191 and 1210 over in the Got a Quick Question for a Car Dealer forum and post 48743 right here in this forum. Of course there are follow up posts to each of those if you want more reasons why guys like us do this simple stuff our selves. And don’t get me started on tire shops that play with lug nuts.

It’s comforting to hear that Subaru runs their company differently than the way Hyundai does. Let us/me know how the “hill holder” works on the Impreza. Given what you said about the Impreaza having a manual emergency brake vs the electrically operated one in the Legacy, it will be interesting to hear how they do the “hill holder” thingy in the Impreza. From everything I have read and see, really HEAR, when the emergency brake and “hill holder” go into action on the Legacy, you’re right about them being related. At least from what I’m hearing (literally) on the Legacy, anyway.

You owe us an early report on your new Impreza when you get it. Then the guys here can listen to us giving blow by blow run downs on our Subie’s as they age.

'fez', you beat me to the punch.

That's Exactly how I feel. The ole 'jipster' must have forgotten how bad it is when car companies turn their backs on 3 time repeat cutomers. He's now more interested in selling house's than car stuff.
