The very reason that in a couple of years when my youngest is out of HS, I want to move a bit south (NC, but southern VA works too!)

I overpay on all my loans - mortgage and two cars. I hate owing money and teh sooner they get paid off the better. 7 Years to go on the house.

I am now feeling the fact that the state of NJ won't pay disability of you are collecting a pension. Only 18 days until I'm in the hospital for a long time which will make life even more interesting.

My wife has been talking about NC, too, lately. Two reasons:

    1) She's tired of all the snow
    2) The early childhood system in NC is one of the best in the country

. I hate owing money and teh sooner they get paid off the better.

There's not too many of us left any more. I hate to owe money so I pay off things as fast as I can. For the business, we paid for everything we bought when it was received, we didn't wait 30 days or 60 days. Suppliers loved us and gave us the best merchandise and best prices.

I think it helps because it is a good self-disiplinary. If you buy a car and pay it off early you are rewarded with a term of "no payments". Some people don't care, as long as they can make the monthly they will buy whatever they "want"....not "need".

I understand that. It is dreary and cold here. I miss all those big geen tropical plants in Florida

Not as good since Richard retired but I understand it is excellent.

OK, just in case you are serious. The dealer I went to is a large dealer group in the Columbus area and the store I went to was a Subaru/Mazda store.

We have a Mazda/Subaru dealer here in Sacramento too. I took my old Grand Cherokee to a Mazda/Jeep dealership for service, but that one closed a while back.

North Carolina has some very fine university level schools, too.
My egghead would have liked to go to Duke, but one of her friends who is also an egghead AND a great athlete got in.
We live in a small town, it's a small school and with the diversity goals that most schools have (which I think is great), she didn't get in.
She could have gotten into UNC (mandated 83% in state students) and I really liked Wake Forest.
She's asking to have a car at school next (junior) year.
I'm kind of worried about handing over the '02 Explorer (her driver when she is home) because it holds 7 and it could become a bus.
I'd rather have her drive the '04 Escape (holds 5).
Might need to shuffle the vehicle fleet before next September.

Can you update your profile to include some info about how to help you out?
I can't do anything this minute, but it would be easy to click on your profile to see the info for what we could do, instead of searching through previous posts.

I'll do that soon. I have to get a hold of my brother who is the fundraising guy. They have an event planned but I'd like to get a web site up for direct donation.

Our washing machine died last weekend. I realize I should have posted in here and gotten 100 washing machine posts going but my mind has been elsewhere....

I would love for you and Stickguy to move to North Carolina. There aren't too many states that have the mountains and the sea shore only 300 miles apart. It's a beautiful state with both urban and rural settings. We also have some very good colleges---Duke, N.C. State, UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, etc. As for the early childhood program, it is very good. We put a lot of time, planning, and money into that program. If I can ever answer any questions regarding schools, living conditions, locations, etc., don't hesitate to let me know.

Weren't you the one who said that you'd never buy a car from a country that we were at war with?

That's a good point. I think every one has certain principles, but those principles get changed if necessary.

But, I forget, what was the rational for being able to buy a Korean built Hyundai.

If you can't buy a car from a country you haven't been at war with that doesn't leave much...even the U.S. fought against itself in the Civil War.
You could buy a Jaguar but there was the Boston Tea Party. The new Canadian Plethore is supposed to come out soon, but there was a war with Canada in 1812. Who's left?

Remember my brother with his 9 year old Civic? Now he is considering a Nissan Versa, because it is $3000 cheaper

I can see get the Versa, it actually gets pretty good reviews, but has 104 hp and numb steering. Also, it probably won't be as reliable, and won't last as long as the Honda...though that's just a possibility.

"Not as good since Richard retired..."

What a nice thing to say. While I miss training the teachers, I miss the students more. I have finally talked our church into adopting a local elementary schiool. The school principal is so excited and we are too. We're going to tutor in math and reading, landscape the grounds, put up playground equipment, organize an annual fundraiser, etc. So many of our church members have so many talents. We drew up a list of who could do what---everything from sewing to cokking to carpentry. We begin our work this month. I'm thrilled beyond words.

I love the colleges down there too. My son was interested in Duke too, but did not end up applying there (he did OK, since he ended up at Cornell).

So I would love if my daughter got into a NC state school, and we could follow her down to become in staters! I hope she will look at NC state actually. my sons former GF from HS is there, and really likes it.

I know a guy outside Charlotte that touts that area, but my company has an office in Cary (my boss is actually there), and I think that area would be an easy sell to the wife (as much as any place further from up north could be!)

Similar neighborhood and house size/style to what we have now, for about 60% of the cost, and 15% of the property taxes. man, could I get a nice car with those savings!

"How is your house purchase coming?"

We've had some showings on our current home, but no bites yet. There is a lot on the market here. I have a super agency. They are doing an excellent job of marketing the house. Though everyone seems impressed with the house, I haven't seen a checkbook come out of a pocket yet. With the warmer weather around the corner, we are hopeful that a good prospect will appear. Thanks for asking.

What would your daughter like to study? That might generate interest in a specific school. Cary---much nicer than Charlotte. Taxes and car insurance---much lower than NJ. Weather---need I say? ACC Basketball---the best. :D

Shouldn't do badly in Cary. I have an ex-BIL who lives there.

I have the best nephew (actually my wife's nephew) who lives in Apex. He's a legislative analyst for the state. Great kid (I say kid - he pushing 40) with a great little family.

I've been sold for a while. A couple years back when I was job hunting I did some applying down there (this would have been just before HS started) but nothing worked out. now we have to wait until she finishes HS (sophomore now, so class of 2014).

what does she want to study? If you find out let us know! not sure at this point. Maybe psychology. Definitely not history.

I do like the Cary area (it has been a long time, but I looked at grad school at Duke and UNC when I was much younger, and loved the area). Plus it is closer to NY.

I do remember still what CARY is an acronym for (according to my sister who almost moved there about 20 years ago: Containment Area for Relocating Yankees.

If the school district permits, another source of help for the school may be if your church coordinates with Boy Scout troops where the scouts do projects to earn badges. And of course the major project the scout coordinates to earn his Eagle. They can do many things to help.

A local Audubon Society park employed a facility maintenace person because he had lots of experience coordinating with scout troops for projects at his previous park job. My son's project repaired wood forming steps in the dirt and added a teaching location on a hillside, the 4th or 5th project along the nature trails done by scouts.

That is the way the Maytag we got right before Christmas is. It doesn't do anything like a traditional top loader. It is supposed to be more efficient and all that BS. I haven't noticed any drop in my water bill, I guess the 3-4 loads a week we do it just doesn't matter. OTOH a family of four doing much more laundry may see a difference.

Richard, I am sure your house will sell. It sounds like from reading your posts you and your wife certainly know how to stage a home for sale.

  • Weren't you the one who said that you'd never buy a car from a country that we were at war with?

That would be tough to define these days. The Subaru Legacy is built in an environmentally conscious Indiana facility with American labor using some components from Japan. I just replaced my Canadian assembled Dodge Grand Caravan's alternator with a new OEM Mopar unit, and now Dodge is owned by the Italians (former axis with Germany and Japan). The Grand Caravan was built when Chrysler was owned by Daimler, a German company. Both the old and new alternators are sourced from Nippondenso in Japan. My Dodge Journey was assembled in Mexico (War with Mexico). Many electronics and paint stocks are sourced from Japan on vehicles otherwise classified as American. With today's global sourcing it would difficult to purchase a vehicle lacking ties to former enemies.

Growing up my dad didn't appreciate my enthusiasm for Hondas and Toyotas because of the Japanese ties. Two years ago he bought a Japanese-assembled Toyota RAV-4 and loves it. I guess time heals the emotional wounds.

We got a Fisher Paykel washer and dryer about 8 years ago and it works great. It was the only energy efficient top loader at the time. My wife likes a top loader so she can throw more stuff in while it is running. They are made in New Zealand, and I don't think the USA has ever fought New Zealand, so it is ok even for those who consider these matters.

Weren't you the one who said that you'd never buy a car from a country that we were at war with?

Technically, it was “went to war with” but yeah that was me alright. Obviously things have changed. Since I knew my field had to be opened when I was going to replace the blown-up XG350, I of course looked at the info on several Japanese cars here at Edmunds. Get this, when I looked at the Accord, Edmonds said something like ‘you should consider a Sonata (yeah, WRONG  ) or a Kia. The Accord is not the leader in this field like it used to be’. It’s things like this that drove ‘isell’ into selling Kia’s in his retirement.

I guess I gotta get that dent in the Legacy’s fender fixed, soon. Last night Mrs. j asked when I was going to call about getting it fixed. When I said, “why, it’s only going to get smacked again”. The reply was, “there is going to be something else around here that’s going to be dented if my car isn’t fixed”.

This is why working from a list of dependable brands can be an exercise in futility. According to such lists, Kenmore is utterly dependable. The washer we need to replace is a Kenmore that is no more that 6 years old and needs work that would cost more than half the price of a new unit.

At the bottom of the dependability list is (wait for it) - Fisher Paykel!

The only thing I know for sure is that modern Maytags are nothing like old Maytags. The pop circuit boards like mad. I'll have to look and see if I can find out of my old washer is a Maytag underneath. That would explain a lot of things.

I used to like old front loaders that used a lot of water like a top loader and had the glass door. I used to pretend I was watching Sea Hunt..... In a modern front loader you hardly see any water. They are amazing machines but not as much fun to watch.

The boy scout idea is a great one. My son recently completed his Eagle scout project, but he had a hard time finding one to do. It has to be something community-service-y, so helping out with a big school improvement project, like landscaping or playground, would provide an opportunity to a scout as well as help the school.

Most top loading Kenmore washers are Whirlpool. Mine lasted a little more than 4 years, before blowing the transmission (ha! car reference :P ).

The only thing I know for sure is that modern Maytags are nothing like old Maytags

That is because Whirlpool bought Maytag.

In all reality with appliances its a joke. Everyone owns someone else, and there really are only a few brands. Kenmore is the mutt of the lineup with Fridges made by LG and Whirlpool, washers/dryers by whirlpool, and dishwashers by Whirlpool and Bosch.

I have a lot of Kenmore in my house (almost everything, except the new washer) simply because Sears always has the parts and does have a lot of repairman available to service if need be. I am happy with the performance as well.

Earlier this week, we had severe thunderstorms and winds high enough to blow shingles off our roof, and pull screws out of one of our fence panels.

Yesterday, it was around 70, and we sat out on the deck in the early evening and had cocktails.

Right now, it's 33 and snowing so hard I suspect it would be difficult to see if one were driving.

This afternoon, it will be sunny and near 50. By the end of the day, I should feel like I've taken a week-long trip, stopping in 4 different parts of the country!!

It's funny how some people like certain brands, while others hate the same brands. When we retired in 2005, we bought a new Whirlpool washer (top loader) and dryer. It's year seven and we've been very pleased. Perhaps ours wasn't made on a Monday or a Friday. :D

The only thing I know for sure is that modern Maytags are nothing like old Maytags.

That is for sure. That poor repair guy is out of breath today.

The pop circuit boards like mad.

When we moved to SC we got a Maytag dishwasher. Prior to that we had Kitcheaid in 2 previous houses. Mrs. j decided to try something else so we got the Maytag. In part, because the salesman said it was one of the quietest dishwashers on the market. It worked fine as long as the timer worked. Within the first year the timer went and it was replaced under warranty. Two years later the timer went again so I called and told the big box and they said, “OH, outta warranty too bad. You should have bought the extended warranty”. :( I figured that so I went to a parts place to get a timer. It was $45 (1995, I think). While I was there I got to talking with the parts guy so I asked him what he charges for the 15 minute job to replace it so I had some ammo when I wrote to Maytag. He charged $65 plus the part. Talked some more and he said they had problems with that timer but the one I was getting should last. Went home and yanked out the timer and he was right about them having problems with that timer alright. The part number of the timer I took out was XXXX-C the new one was XXXX-F.

I wrote Maytag and mentioned that the timer had already been replaced once and I could tell by the part number suffix on the new timer that it appeared that they had a known problem with it. I said that I would be satisfied with a refund of my purchase price for the timer. Three days later they called to tell me the check was in the mail. The next day I had the check. Nothing like Hyundai, huh? :confuse:

FWIW, when we moved back to the Burgh the only appliance we brought back was the 5 year old Amana fridge. About a month after we were in the house we proved to ourselves that we couldn’t live without another fridge so we went to get a fridge for the basement. Saw a scratch and dent 20 cubic foot Maytag with a HUGE scratch on the side of it at Circuit City. While I was looking at it the salesman came over and said, “we’ve been trying to get rid of this thing for a month and have marked it down twice but still no takers”. I said, “REALLY? I wonder why”. I followed that up with, “if you lower it some more I might be the one to take it off your hands”. He goes to the manager and comes back with a $125 reduction. I said, “throw in delivery and I’ll take it”. I get the sob story that they always charge for delivery. They don’t have any control over that, blah, blah, blah. I responded with, “OK, knock off another $35 and I’ll pay your $35 delivery charge”. Back to the desk he goes and comes back with, “we’ll deliver it at no charge”. Sounds like buying a car, huh? :)

Everything is negotiable.....and if you don't ask, you don't get.

I learned long ago that where money is involved everything is negotiable, just like you said. Along these lines is real estate too. When you’re selling/buying a house and you’re down to the last few bucks to get a deal done I wait for the agents to get involved because as far as I’m concerned they are not innocent bystanders in the process. I remember one day a few years ago a guy at work heard me say that and he almost went postal on me. His wife was an agent and he said, “they don’t make as much as you think. They’re not selling cars you know”. All I could say was, “money is involved”. The others that were in the conversation understood that but he was the lone outsider.

Had the same problem with our 1st minivan (1995 Voyager). practically brand new, and quick spiffy (actually sharp for a van. Had the Rallye package with great looking alloys, and was a dark plum color).

so one day, go into a store, and come back to find a huge dent in the RF fender (just ahead of the door, but behind the wheel IIRC). Perfectly matched up to a shopping cart, but no cart around, so someone must have moved it after they rammed up. Needless to say, I was irate and the wife was none too pleased.

I talked to the body guy I used, and it was going to cost quite a bit (plus require paint) to make it "as new". But, for about $50, he said he would work on it on the car. Not exactly a paintless dent repair (too big for that) but he ended up getting it mostly popped out. Still had a slight rumple, but paint was not broken, and it really was not too bad. And given the rough life a van leads, a few year down the road I was glad not to have spent big $4 fixing it!

Better get out there and get going. Was actually at W-F today signing the application paperwork. Slightly different, since I was consolidating our existing 1st mortgage plus what had piled up on the HELOC (from all the home upgrades and other odds and ends).

will end up with almost exactly the same mortgage payment, but the Heloc payment goes away, and we will cash out some to finish up a few last upgrades. All it took was extending the term out to some period where not only won't I be living in this house, I most likely will be dead!

Locked in a rate of 3.25%, zero points. couldn't pass up converting the HELOC to a lower interest rate, that can't go up. And lowering monthly cash flow will be nice.

and of course, will allow budget room for a car payment at some point!

    >Our church sponsors a scout troop. We can get them involved....wonderful idea! You always give me such good advice.

The key is that someone familiar with what the scout projects need to be like for the scout should be involved. Maybe someone in the school district or the principal or the custodian or maintenance director for the school. Here the Audubon Society park person had run an area boy scout camp adjacent to a popular park. Therefore, he knew how to work with the kid and the scoutmaster as well as parents. So a maintenance or grounds supervisor, he thought up projects that served his goals and matched them to the scout's need.

I would suggest opening it to other troops for projects, as well as the church's own. Good luck there doing something good with scouting!

Amana fridge? You couldn't kill those things. We bought a new one in 1967 and sold it to one of my students in 1987. We never had a problem with it. We only sold it because we needed a bigger one.

You got a great deal on the Maytag. Did it last longer than the dishwasher?
