Did you try going online to see what offers they have on their website?

You guys are not going to believe this.

About 4 PM yesterday I got a call at work from XM. They want me to sign up for the one time promo rate of $86 plus tax plus fees (used to be $77 plus tax plus fees). All in, the price is $94.43. I seem to remember the all in price I have on the Genny is just under $93. I got a letter from XM about 2 weeks ago informing its customer that they will be raising their subscription price to something a little under $2 for the year so I guess that explains the bump. However, I still don’t get the delta of $77 to $86 and the price now only reflecting the rate increase but they can play with the numbers all they want as long as I like the new number.

Now all I have to do is convince Mrs. j that she wants it. I had a kick off discussion with her last night and I seem to be gaining some ground on this. Will let you guys know how I do. Maybe XM saw my post yesterday and knows they had to make a better offer.

This deal is doable. At full MSRP I would have had no chance but at least now I’m still in the batter’s box. :)

Using the Driver easypayment method it works out to $1.80 a week, the cost of a large coffee, to have beautiful, ad free, digital sound music any time and place, while you are in the car.

    Who could argue with that?

you might tell him getting the car fixed is less money in the long run that a set of prematurely worn tires. Not only that, it will be a lot easier to drive.

LMAO! You always compare things to the price of a large coffee. I have never seen such varied prices for a cup of coffee in my life. :D Let's see now. How many large coffees would it take to buy a new BMW? :P
  • sterlingdogsterlingdog Member Posts: 6,984
    "...he is 83 yrs old."

I wouldn't even bother making a suggestion to him. First, a person that age isn't going to change his mind about anything. Secondly, due to his age, his driving days are now numbered. Thirdly, if his wife has taken orders from him all of these years, she deserves the fate that befalls her. She should have had sense enough to look out for her own safety. I would be more concerned with burning newspapers in the fireplace. It's a wonder that the old fool hasn't burned the house down with them in it. As for your desire to help, remember that no good deed goes unpunished. If I have learned one thing in recent years, that is the one.

It's not the money that she is hung up about, honest. It's just that she doesn't see what is so good about it. Yet when she is in my car she likes the idea of the song name appearing, who the artist is, the year it was released, etc.

    I'm spoiled, I'll get my way. ;)

Well, that's one way of looking at it....talk about being creative. I asked a question about a month ago on 2 Passat sites and I think there has been one post in that month, so we should be thankful that we are a diverse group with lots of good thoughts, about cars and life.

Let's see now. How many large coffees would it take to buy a new BMW?
Somewhere between about 30000 to 40000. Let me put it this way, if you bought a coffee every day it would take you about 100 years. My formula is good, but not that good.

It's not the money that she is hung up about, honest. It's just that she doesn't see what is so good about it.

I thought I could get by with AM and FM radio since I can usually find something to listen to. But, since I have had Sirius I almost never listen to regular radio in the car. I really hate commercials that are loud and when they yell at me. Too much news is depressing. Just keep going over these facts and you will get your way.

Do you have a tire gauge? Maybe it's just low air on one side.

My guess would be, since air is free, he probably would check the air pressure. But,. I think I do have to ask him some questions so he will have the car checked.

First, a person that age isn't going to change his mind about anything.
All true! I think for my own peace of mind I have to ask him to have the car checked. If something serious happened to them because of a fault I would feel really bad if I didn't mention something.
Coffee is free where I work, so it would take a lot!

Maybe if you saved $1 every time you got one of your free coffees, you would have enough to buy a 1984 Firenza.

If you dangle one more Passat is my face again....

Hey, I'm improving greatly though I'll be here to at least mid-July. Had a couple really nice days but have a miserable case of insomnia tonight. Tomorrow I have the first of the cost drivers ($50 round trip to the hospital at least twice a week) Anyone who didn't check out friendsofstevelasala.org and can and are inclined to help at all please do. Looks like we are going to have to pay some caregivers. We have some doing it for free but can't fill all the times.

That said, I feel several times as well as I did just two days ago so we're moving in the right direction. If only I could get to sleep. Have a cab coming in 5 hours, meaning I have to be up in 4 hours.

Later messages may look like they are in Klingon.

    he is 83 yrs old.

Think about that age, 83 years old means he was born in 1929. Thats the start of the great depression. By the time he graduated high school all he would have known would be economic hard times, the dust bowl, War and rationing. He is likely this way due to the fact that the formative years in his life you made do with what you had and were not sure when you would get more. So you made every dollar go as far as you could, you bought things on the cheap, you kept things beyound their useful life and you forgo repairs unless they absolutly positively needed them.

We had the free six months subscription with the Sonata (XM radio I think), we listened to it a lot but after the novelty of it wore off we spent most of the time listening to regular radio and CD's. Never even gave signing up a thought. Right now it's either listen to the radio or plug in the Ipod and go. With the Ipod I have a good 20+ hours of commercial free music that I really like without repeats.

But to each his (her?) own.

You are 100% correct. They grew up in England, went through the depression and the war which probably weighs heavily on their minds.

It is hard to imagine how hard it is for them to spend money. They are childhood sweethearts so they reinforce each others values.

They get more of a thrill buying chocolate Easter bunnies in a dollar store, after Easter than I do buying a new dishwasher. btw, talking about dishwashers, did I mention they don't have one.

Once they gave us some potatoes they got from a farmer selling them on the side of the highway. They were the smallest, grungiest, most awful tasting potatoes, but they were thrilled, they only paid $1 for a big basket of them.

But, I think being able to use your money to enjoy certain things is an art. If you earned your money, you should be able to buy a few things you will enjoy, that make life more pleasant. It is reassuring to see money in the bank, but after all, it is just paper. There is a balance, between saving, and enjoying certain items, that make life more pleasant.....I think we only get one chance to go through it, might as well make the most of it.

It isn't for every one, and the cost/benefit is different to different people.
The trip to Florida takes 24 hours of driving time. To me, it is worth it for that alone. When you get to Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia it is hard to find a decent radio station, and you get tired of the same CDs.

Also, I can get news or weather reports at any time. But, there is a limit for what I would pay, around $80 to $90 is about the limit.

20 hours? I think I have 20 days at this point (the itunes tells you hours/days.) I believe right now I have about 3,000 songs on mine, after a recent upload of a ton of songs from my nephew.

Now all I need to do is load the last 400 or so (maybe more) CDs into itunes. I might have to hire my daughter to do that over the summer.

I would be much more inclined to use an ipod in the car if I could see the info on the display, and control from the radio controls.

We have been hooked for years, especially for travelling. I don't have it right now in my car, but I really just use that around town, and can live with the FM stations (since there are plenty being right outside philly). I do miss the MLB package though, since I am a NY fan and the station does not come in very clearly where I am.

the traffic is nice too when travelling, but you cna always find a local AM station that does traffic updates around any of the cities that they cover.

Agreed - $7-10 per month is about right. I know my wife listens to Sirius when they take her car to work, and we've found it nice to have when we take road trips. Here in the west, radio stations fade in and out frequently, so it's nice to be able to listen to the same genre of music while on the road.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,335
where you are makes a huge difference. I am in a major market area, close to a city. No problem having 10 presets on FM A, with more overflowed to FM B (a nice thing about my Volvo is that there are 10 presets on each channel, instead of the commen 6). And they all come in fine (reception wise), just too many commercials! And some are my daughters music, which leaves something to be desired...

so for local short hop driving, not a big deal. On the road or in the boonies? Big deal.

Just checked. My Cobalt has 36 presents on 6 rows of 6. And they are interchangeable. I assume, don't know, if I had XM activated, XM can be mixed in with local AM/FM stations.

Tired day but continuing to recover. I will be here a minimum of 90 days. This is because they did a stem cell transplant with t cell depletion. It takes a LONG time for t cells to develop. Busted. Of course not!

I have 6 of the slots prog/ with AM talk stations.
My son, a music geek, now at OSU had 6 programmed with FM from high school days and his summer job in Columbus when he had the car there last summer.

    That's 12 out of 36.

And this is the standard radio. There's an upgrade radio--I'll bet it has even more memory slots for stations. How did we ever live in the old days with 5 buttons on a Mustang radio. No tape. No CD. No FM at first.

I don't know how to do that, but It would be great to have all my records digitized. I have 14 gig of downloaded music from when it was legal and would feel complete with all of my vinyl on thumb drive. USB should be standard on all current car stereos. CDs are so limited.

The easiest way is go to Costco and pick up an Ion turntable - less than $100. It will convert your vinyl to digital. A little time consuming but a neat thing.

Of course wherever possible just borrow a CD of what you have on vinyl from the library and pop it into your iTunes....

It's been 6 months since I took delivery of my new car, and have developed apoplexy waiting for the first scratch or ping dent. I can't take this stress. I know it's going to happen, BUT WHEN? I'm thinking of getting another car to go the supermarkets, malls, etc. so I don't have to worry anymore. Maybe I can convince my doctor I am disabled so I can get a handicapped parking sticker and be safe from those evil 2-door cars who love to leave their mark on unsuspecting sedans.

I have to do something - this anxiety is killing me

abaco, the last car I had that I felt that way about was a pearl white Solara.

The first scratches, fortunately, were underneath from pulling into a bank with a steep dip. You couldn't see them from the top...but I knew it was flawed.

No other marks ever happened in 4 years of driving the car. Good Luck. Dave

Well, as someone who has the real deal on a handicapped card and have for decades I'm sorry but the don't have a first dent exception. I know - life isn't fair.

If you can make it though the summer I could have a deal for you. I always buy used so my cars come with the first dent. If I like your car I'll run it through the winter and you can drive my pre-dented convertible. You'll have to remind me what you have so I know if this works for me........

Best of luck. I remember the first dent on the 00 Accord that I still have was scraping an alloy wheel!

Well then you have to use the Snakeweasel anti "when will I get the first stratch, dent or ding" stress relieving sysyem (patent pending). First you have to get a hammer, then go out to your car walk around it and take the hammer and give a random quarter panel a whack. There you have it your very first scratch, dent and/or ding and you will no longer have that stress.

This I give to you free of charge, and remember someday, and this day may never come, I may ask a favor of you.

Nah! Then I'd be worried that YOU WOULD GET THE FIRST SCRATCH! if I swapped cars for the winter. As for a hammar, it would be like hitting my dog or my children. I couldn't handle that. And if I got a scratch under the car, I'd still know it was there and it would just ruin my day.

Maybe I'll just "camp out" in the car to make sure no one or nothing can maim my beautiful baby.

And if someone came over with a key to scrape the sides of my baby, I'd get out of the car, give the guy a 9mm, and ask him to shoot me in the head instead of scratching my car.

Good grief, I need to getta life!

A lot of this first scratch stuff is dependent on where you live. I live in a small town in SW Virginia where people are respectful of other people's property. Even kids open doors slowly in tight quarters or face their parents if they blemish anyone's car.

I remember renting a car in NYC. Car was maybe 6 months old and the Hertz attendant actually counted the dents and had me sign that if too many more dents appeared upon return, I may be responsible. What a joke. Leave with 8 dents, come back with 10 dents, guy shrugs and says...not bad.

Yes, area of the country has alot to do with it. But, when you find a hardly noticeable scratch or ping dent on your new car, it's like finding out that your newlywed had sex with someone else on the honeymoon. Could you really go back into bed with that individual. Could you really enjoy your new car as much?

I'm a retired School Administrator who also sold Lexus automobiles and SUV's and managed two other high end dealerships before I retired.

I own a 2012 Mercedes E350 Sport Sedan, Premium 2 package, Tire/Wheel Package, Leather (which is optional on Mercedes, and God knows why), Iridium Silver Metallic, Black interior, Burl Walnut, Driver's dynamic front seat with message, etc., front ventilated seats, rear spoiler, etc.

With USAA invoice less 2000 and Mercedes Benz Financial incentive, I paid $4000 UNDER INVOICE in October. Love the car. Just need to take some Valium, Xanax or some other tranquillizer prior to walking to my car in a parking lot for fear of a scratch or ping dent. Otherwise, I'm quite normal, at least that's what my kids tell me. My dog gives me the same feedback when he jumps on my lap - normal, but paranoid.

Personally I don't care as much about stuff like that as other here do. I just remember that dents, scratches and dings are part of the driving experience, Would I rather not have them? sure but I am also a realist. Also I am one that keeps cars for a long time putting close to 200K on a car. You are not going to drive for 200K miles and not get something. Plus a small ding on a 200K mile car isn't going to reduce the value.

Now if I drove 3-5 years and got rid of the car after 50K miles (or even less) then I would be a bit more concerned.

Now anything major I would get repaired.

It's not only what other people do but what mom nature can do. One good hail storm can give you plenty of dents. But also a small pebble kicked up by another vehicle can give you that first ding.

I see alot of that going on down here in Florida. Or is it all the old 90 year old retirees driving 1966 cadillacs that are so faded down here that I think they are car covers? Hmmm, need to check this out.

tranquillizer prior to walking to my car in a parking lot for fear of a scratch or ping dent.

No one wants their car dented in a parking lot. But, we spend too much time worrying about something that probably won't happen. In fact, I once read that we worry about things that won't even happen 95% of the time.

Park in the best places possible, away from dented cars, not near the parking spot for shopping carts, on an end if possible to lower your chances of getting hit by 50%....things like that. We can only try and hope for the best.

I have seen it here, but even more in Florida, people who are too lazy to take the shopping cart back in to the store or to leave it in a coral. They take their groceries out and then leave the cart right there.

I have found these things are less likely to occur if you behave in a normal way and try not to be over protective.

My friend had his car hit numerous times on parking lots. He parked his car far away from his office, on the company lot, no other car in sight. When he came out he found someone tried to park next to him and side swiped his car....and of course drove off. Another time a snow plow clearing the lot scraped his car. Fortunately someone who was sitting in their car saw it and gave him the details.

Just live life the best you can and hope for the best.
