On August 1, it will be one year since I've read or posted on Edmunds. Did I miss anything?
Well, we did some XM Satellite subscription renewals, dishwasher and garbage disposal work and a member had an engine blow up but that ain’t no sweat off your eyes.
So, to what do we owe this near annual comeback? You need a new disposal or something? :confuse:
BTW, is it true that ‘isell’ is now selling Kia’s in your neck of the woods?
Welcome back.

For those of you who don't watch the Chronic Car Buyers Anonymous or RWTIV topics, here is the latest on my wife's car search... After driving the Mini Cooper Countryman and Clubman she decided she wanted to try a Mini Cooper S Countryman(more power, tighter suspension), and we found this 2011:
We both really liked it; I'm no fan of FWD but it's her car and she gets to choose.
My BMW dealer has a couple of 2011 3 Series from BMW's corporate fleet and they both have under 8,000 miles on them and are priced almost $10,000 off of the original MSRP. We looked at them but they didn't really excite either one of us; their main advantage is that we would continue to receive first class treatment from the BMW service and parts department.
So anyway, we are going to try a get the Cooper S Countryman. Here's are the negotiations up to now:
"Internet" Price : $26,916 My offer : $25,500 OTD(inc. TTL- Ky sales tax is 6%) Their counter-offer : $27,525 OTD($1,400 off the asking price+ TTL and "Doc. fees") My final offer(not yet made): $27,000 OTD($25,000 + 6%)
I'm going to wait for a while -maybe a day or longer- before making any counter-offer. In any event, I doubt that any dealer in the Louisville area is swamped with customers; high temperatures are forecast to be above 100F through Saturday.

Yeah, as said, solid summary. Maybe do one of these quarterly and I'll be back in Septmeber. Don't need any appliances at the moment, save for a truck. :shades:
Roadburner...I think you're buying at the right time. No one is really going out to buy cars in this heat. Plus, you'll get really good service from BMW buying that Mini.
I think you'll cut the deal. Like that you're taking a deep breath for a couple of days to let the dust settle.
Can't help but wonder what the dealer would do if you walked in with a Cashier's Check for $26K and tell him...."here 'ya go. I'm all in! You want it or not?"
It is supposed to be 101-103 here Saturday. I was trying to convince the wife it was the perfect day to shop. Should be dead, and after dragging them out through the lot a few times, they will be dying to offer a deal I can't refuse, just to stay inside!
It sounds like it’s going to be HOT everywhere in the East/Northeast. It’s supposed to be 100 in the Burgh tomorrow. 95 right now according to some people that went out for lunch. Last week it was 80 at 7:15 AM when I got out of the car in the parking lot. It got worse from there 102 at the end of the day upon my return. :surprise:
I’m not doing anything tomorrow but going to my brother’s or Son #2s pool.

I know many of us here are "new car only" guys & many are "used car/demo car only" guys. While the debate will always go on and on, here is a nice purchase my buddy picked up:
2011 Audi CPO A5 2.0T Coupe. I'm not sure If its a Premium Plus or Prestige. Its has a lot of options, I wont say LOADED, because I'm sure its missing some. Black/Brown Leather, Auto, NAv, Xenon Lights, sunroof... MSRP of well over $50K. 42,000 miles. The girl who leased it before, got it in late '10 and took a 2 year lease, then got bought out by a "pull ahead" program. He bought it for $37K Out the Door. Dealer showed him full service records. Oil Changed every 3K, even though the mechanics told her every 10K is what the car calls for.
Nice ride for a great price.

42,000 miles in 1.5 years on a lease? talk about a mistmatch!
not sure how much I would pay for something like that. lot of miles to start with. and if you drive a fair amount, in a couple years you will be in that 80/90K range, and the value is going to get hammered.
a deal like this I will always look at anticipated use (miles) and duration (how long to hang onto it).
Me, I am fine with used (such as the 2007 X3 I found), but my wife really wants to have a nice new car for herself (new car smell, no one else's "emissions" in it). So not sure I could sell her on it, even though it will save a lot of $ outlay now.
odds are that I won't be buying new for myself any time soon though.
It sounds like it’s going to be HOT everywhere in the East/Northeast.
Even up here near Toronto it is 96 right now with a high of 98 predicted. I had to go to the store and when I got out of the car I thought I was going to melt!
Tomorrow it is going to cool down to 80!
Imagine those people without electricity for this week!
I've been reading all the posts, but stopped posting until most of Virginia is back on the grid.
I was wondering how you were doing with the new Mustang and if your power was on. I suppose you could go out and cool down in the car every once in awhile if it was a problem.
I don't think posting will use up too much electricity from the grid...lol.
Nice having an update on your car, glad you don't want to trade it in yet.
2011 Audi CPO A5 2.0T Coupe. I'm not sure If its a Premium Plus or Prestige.
When we were looking for an A4 we test drove a 2011 A5 because that was the only equivalent manual they had in stock.
I think your friend got a great car because it is a great looking car and it handles so well. I don't think the 42K miles is a huge problem because they had to be highway miles to put them on that fast.
I was reading where Audi might start to manufacture in the U.S. to get the costs down and increase sales...just like they did successfully with the Passat.
It will be interesting to hear your impressions of the car once you go for a ride in it.
my daughter just reported from our pool that the temp is up to 91. more like a sauna than a swimming pool!
The pools around here are pretty warm too but not 91. On July 4 th at Son #2s it was only 82 but it rained a couple days before that so that cooled it off from around 86 he said but I was fine with the 82.
I know you guys are going to think that I’ve had too much lemonade but I had a hard time wrapping my brain around this one myself:
When we lived in SC we went to Hilton Head lots of times (only 2 1/2 hours away). One summer during the week of July 4 th (maybe ’95) both sons came down for a visit so we went to Hilton Head. The water temp in the Atlantic was 92; yeah I said the OCEAN was 92 and it felt like it. I still can’t believe it. The first time I told the know-it-all engineers I work with about that I got, “sure jmonroe, sure. Now lets go get you a coffee BLACK, before the boss shows up”.

I'm more used to the Jersey shore in late July/early August, where the temp might range from 59-72 or so. Never toward the 90s though.
our pool tends to run warm, since the back yard gets full sun all day, so when it is this hot and sunny it really gets hot. Good news is, never need a solar cover!
Sorry to get off the topic of cars again, but..................
Just a brief note: I did learn a valuable lesson from my experience yesterday with the drain pipe from the sink. The lesson is, line a plumber before an emergency happens, ask friends or people at work. I have a plumber that 2 people at work highly recommend. I am sure the job could have been done for 1/3 of the price, but you don't have much choice in these situations, unless you are prepared.
Now a question that won't be easy to answer. There are marks left in the stainless steel sink from using a powerful drain cleaner called Lightening. Also, food was left on the inside of the dishwasher door over night and it stained the stainless steel door.
As anyone had this kind of problem or knows of the way to get rid of the stains?
Is the stainless the type that has a texture like it would have if you used a Brillo pad rather than being polished? You might try that on it, but the sulphuric acid that's in the Lightning is probably the problem. Check the label on the container if you can. Someone on the net said it's sulphuric acid buffered which is still sulphuric acid. In searching I found some stainless steels are resistant more than others. You might try stainless steel specific polishes and cleaners. The damage may become less obvious with time if the Brillo buffing idea isn't correct for the texture of the surface.
Well, that sure gets me up to date. Thanks, TJC. Of course, some things don't change. We were talking about dishwashers last summer, I believe.
However, GG in an Audi? Last I heard he sold the Acura and bought the BMW. So glad to hear that Richard moved into a small place. ...and that Driver finally pulled the trigger on a Florida home.
Mostly glad to hear that Fezo is alive and well... hopefully, everyone else is as well.
But Isell and Kia? Say it ain't so! I'll have to go hunt down the Kia stores in the area and find him.
You can thank Kirstie's FaceBook post for motivating me to come say hi. My dad died on Aug. 1 and I got way behind and never really got back into reading past messages... although I used to read a couple of weeks worth at a time.
I'm still driving the 06 Accord (manual, of course). I came out of retirement last month but not back to education. I went to work for my church 4 days a week. Great fun, great people.
So great to hear from familiar faces... er, usernames. But no Edmunds facelift in a year????
42,000 miles in 1.5 years on a lease? talk about a mistmatch!
not sure how much I would pay for something like that. lot of miles to start with. and if you drive a fair amount, in a couple years you will be in that 80/90K range, and the value is going to get hammered.
OTOH, I have traditionally done well on buys like this (Okay, maybe this one is a bit extreme). I drive less than avg miles as I work from home, so a high mile lease return or the odd duck like a one year old car with 25-30k miles could often times be bought cheap for the model year. By the time I'm ready to move on, the miles are back to average (or better), and the resale evens out for a low TCO. I have been on the lookout for something like this on my truck hunt, but with the used car market now doing its thing, those deals aren't there anymore.
I wouldn't want to be the guy turning in the lease that far over on the miles, however ($$$).
I did that with my recent volvo purchase. 5 YO (elapsed time), but 91K but the price reflected the miles, and it was in great condition (must have been a lot of easy highway time)
but, I WFH too now, and just use it around town, and at the end of the year my duaghter will be using it. So ideally, maybe 5K year average, so in 6 years it will maybe be 120-125k? reasonable to me.
Is the stainless the type that has a texture like it would have if you used a Brillo pad rather than being polished?
Yes, they are both like dull brushed stainless steel. The lightening container is gone, but I might be able to find if it has sulphuric acid in it.
I think it would be worth trying a polish as you suggested. It actually seems to be coming out slowly as the sink gets used and the dishwasher is used, I would say it is getting lighter each time.
And I am indeed alive and getting well but I am still in NYC 4 months down the road.
That said, it looks like I am going home this Wednesday. I'll still have to commute in every couple of weeks or so but that's fine. Will know more Monday.

OK, since you asked. Go to posts 74779, 74794, 74851, 74861, 74870 and others in the string if you want even more about how I was worked over by both my dealer and Hyundai corp. when the engine blew up in Mrs. jmonroe’s ’05 XG350 with less than 43K miles.
About this ‘isell’ Kia thing. I believe he is incognito with probably a beard and some body padding to complete his disguise. However, he will be well recognized when you’re at the negotiating table with him due to his disdain for buyers who are hung up on the color of the car they want. That’s what will blow his cover.
One more thing. I guess we owe one to ‘kirstie’ for dragging you back in here. She has been a model den-mother and has carried our fight to the top dogs at Edmunds who wanted to jack up our dues even more than what they are now. She is very well appreciated around here. That is, unless we find out that she got you back in here with a better discount than what the regulars got last month.

Being cut off from electric power is, without a doubt, one of the most horrendous situations to be in!!!
Back in 2007, we got a direct hit from hurricane Wilma in mid-October. We were without power for 5 days. We had no running water for 4 of those days - couldn't take a shower because the city uses electric power to pump water put of the aquifers. I had to take a big bucket down to our pool and fill it up so we could flush the toilets. We went over to city hall to get drinking water and gas stations could not pump the gas out of their storage tanks. So I went over to the dealership where I worked and we siphoned gasoline from the new cars and trucks on the lot and gave it to our employees.
It was so hot down here (October is a very warm month here in South Florida) so we went to the dealership where the owner had two huge diesel generators which he used to run the air-conditioning. So we stayed there until the power was back on. In Boca Raton and Delray Beach, many homes were without power for 3 weeks.
Definitely don't want to go through something like that again. We lost 70% of the trees here in our condo community.
I wouldn't make them choose between a BMW and a convertible. A BMW convertible would be just fine. Rather than have them go through the trouble of driving it back home I would gladly pay their air fare back to wherever and just keep the car. Just the kind of guy I am.
Talking to a woman here last night. Unlike me she doesn't have nice insurance and currently owed $4 million for treatment! Of course there is no way she'll ever be able to pay it. Got to find her some outfit that picks up such cases. Meanwhile they continue to treat her.

My brother lives in Delray Beach and I heard and saw some of the devastation that Wilma dealt out in October 2005 (I’m sure you meant 2005 not 2007). He and most of the people in his over 55 community (off Hagen Ranch Road) lost their pool screened in covering. Because of all the people that were having that replaced I think it was around 5 months before he finally got his but that was all the damage that he had. The communities common areas did have landscape damage but where he is it wasn’t as bad as 70%. When I visited him in January 2006, I remember seeing a home made sign at The Boys store in an old time horse drawn cart that said “Thanks Wilma”.
I hope your pneumonia is on the way out. BTW, what is it with you south Florida retirees? A few months ago my brother contracted Legionnaires Disease, which as I understand it, is an upscale designers version of the common garden variety of pneumonia that you have/had.

However, GG in an Audi? Last I heard he sold the Acura and bought the BMW. So glad to hear that Richard moved into a small place.
So great to hear from familiar faces... er, usernames.
not sure how much I would pay for something like that. lot of miles to start with. and if you drive a fair amount, in a couple years you will be in that 80/90K range, and the value is going to get hammered.
I wouldn't want to be the guy turning in the lease that far over on the miles, however ($$$).

but, I WFH too now, and just use it around town, and at the end of the year my duaghter will be using it. So ideally, maybe 5K year average, so in 6 years it will maybe be 120-125k? reasonable to me.

I think there has been a facelift within the last year. The page looks different and we haven't been able to post for many days at a time.
Sometimes the emotorcons disappeared, lots of fun....and you missed it all.

salesstories. That said, it looks like I am going home this Wednesday. I'll still have to commute in every couple of weeks or so but that's fine. Will know more Monday.
Is one of our members here sending a car to pick you up to carry you home? A BMW? Sebring convertible?

Great news!!!!!!
