Seems a new water heater costs around a minimum of $500 to $1100 for a super deluxe model.
Now that is truly astounding. Where is this, exactly? If I were to Google "gas water heaters" in your area, could I find out what features that super deluxe model included? Maybe an attached spa?
Normally I’m not in favor of bailouts but in the case of the US auto industry it was necessary. If the industry failed our economy would have been a lot worse because of the companies that make the parts for the auto industry going under and the loss of jobs from that and all of the trickledown effect it would have had on other industries; like glass, plastics, electronics, etc.
The Japanese auto industry would not have gotten off the ground if the Japanese government had not kick started them to a very large extent, so a little help to keep our industry alive was needed. Everybody seems to forget and it is the popular belief that we GAVE them the money but it was a LOAN. A fair amount of it has already been paid back but I’m not so naive to think that it will all be paid back.
I’m probably too sensitive to this issue because I’m from the Pittsburgh area and back in the 80’s the steel industry in this country all but vanished and Pittsburgh was on its way to becoming a ghost town because of that. Yeah, the unions and poor company management were the cause of it all but some industries can’t be allowed to fail when the country will suffer because of it. I’d like for there to be another way but I’m not smart enough to know what that would be. I don’t want to hear that ‘the free enterprise system corrects for this’ because while that may be true for some smaller industries it doesn’t apply to the auto industry. If you think the economic recovery that we are going through now is slow, it would be lots worse if the auto industry was allowed to kill itself.
Sometimes I think because of what happened to the steel industry in this country, our government said, “never again”.

They're all drive through windows if you hit them hard enough!!!
lol.............and that's another thing that happens every day in Florida. Either they go right through the window (best not to sit in the window if there is parking in front) or quite often they mow down people on the sidewalk.
kick started them to a very large extent, so a little help to keep our industry alive was needed.
Well said and I agree 100%. The only time I wonder about that though is when I rented the Impala. What is GM thinking? If they could produce those cars for about $15K, and they should be able to since the whole design has been paid for many times over, and there certainly isn't R&D money being spent, then it would make some sense to consider buying one...if you just wanted a large, solid car and didn't really care about the quality or enjoyment of driving. But, other than that I don't know why someone would choose to buy one.
Seems a new water heater costs around a minimum of $500 to $1100 for a super deluxe model.
In my Caribbean house I have a 45-gallon tank solar hot water heater and it cost only $500 and it is designed to produce free hot water for 20 or more years. But I had to add an electric solar booster though for cloudy and rainy days.
The solar hot water system works great and it heats the water up to 140 degrees F. The solar booster by comparison is a little more fickle and the useful life is pegged at only five years.
For those of you who live in Florida and Arizona I would not be surprised if you are taking advantage of this cheap source of energy.
"...why would I call someone who I thought had died."
In dealing with these tradesmen, that is a wonderful line to use. I'm definitely going to use that one in the future.
Driver: I always check these guys out before I use them. I also try to get at least three estimates for the job in question. Even then, you can't always be sure. Fortunately, we have been able to use our same electrician and plumber that we used for years. That is an advantage of moving back home. As you say, it is good to have some trusted names in your directory for an emergency situation.
I recall back in the late 80s my elderly aunt had driven into the side of the local funeral home. She was trying to park on the level asphalt but didn't seem to get things stopped. She always liked large, showy cars and I have no idea what kind she drove. I don't recall that she was badly hurt in any way. I also remember her because we got an attorney letter after her death in case we (I) wanted to contest her will which left me a nephew nothing and gave $350,000 to Rev.(?) Swaggert because of his television ministery.
"...you have to read all the missing posts, just like Richard."
I can honestly say that I try to read all posts. It has been a bit of a challenge during the last three months, but I have managed to do it. Funny thing; one of my favorite BMWs was the 1987 535is that I owned from 1990 to 1992- much like this one:
Not only does my wife's 3 Series share a similar color scheme, it is also roughly the same size and weight as my old 5er. I suppose that explains why I like it as much as I do- and why I lament Munich's penchant for increasing the size and weight of their product line...

Mike, that type of recovery is slow going. Hang in there and you'll soon feel better. I had the same condition in 1986. It was months before I felt like my old self---and I was 25 years younger then. It is important just now that you don't over exert yourself and that you keep a good distance from other people who are ill. Best wishes.
I fully support their right, and strength of belief, to not open on the Sabbath.
But what about their Jewish or Muslim franchisees?? Shouldn't they be allowed to close on Friday or Saturday instead??
There are 3 Chik Fil A's in the Boston area. I've never been to one. IMHO, it's just a chicken sandwich.
As for the Mayor of Boston, it's just what some people call a Meninoism. He can't stop them from opening up but it's an election year, he's been Mayor for 19 years and he courts the GBLT community as he wants Boston to be seen as a progressive city worthy of financial investments from other states.
I think if my home had gas, I'd look into the instant hot water setups that don't store a volume of hot water. See This Old House and the other show they have for info on those.
Except in northern areas where the water coming in from the street in the winter time is too cold for tankless water heaters to be very effective. When water comes in at 40F, the tankless ones take 2-3 minutes to get the water up to 110F.
It really is a waste of water and time having to wait that long to wash your hands.
The solution is the have a tankless in-line with a smaller standing tank water heater.
I never knew that you could rent a hot water heater. I wonder if that is true in the United States. I've never heard of such.
It's not as common as it used to be but it still is offered.
I've been in my house 18 years and am on the 3rd water heater. First one I installed back in 1998 and the second in 2008. The last one cost me me about $500 as I installed it myself.
I really dislike ALL fast food places and try to stay away from them. There is one menu item at KFC that is delicious---the large chicken pot pie for $4. I didn't even know about it until a friend of mine insisted that I try one. I couldn't believe the home made taste and the amount of good chicken in it. I had my wife try one. She agreed. Every now and then, she'll bring two home and fix a nice salad to go with them. It makes a tasty meal.
Thanks, richard, I'm hanging in there! Just got back from the doctor - he is going to have me take another Xray in a few weeks to see how things look. If there are still signs of pneumonia, he wants me to do a CAT Scan. Time will tell. Coughing is not as bad as it was 3 weeks ago, and breathing is still strained. He took a breath test and found signs of COPD. So, I guess I'll be seeing the pulmonary doctor in a week or so.
Seems a new water heater costs around a minimum of $500 to $1100 for a super deluxe model.
I just did a sanity check of the prices of 50 gallon gas water heaters at HD. The price range is $369 to $747 without installation. All of them are GE and all have a 6 year warranty. Don’t ask me why someone would opt for the one at $747 vs. $369 when the warranty is the same and the specs are nearly identical. I know the price has gone up quite a bit in the last few years because in January of 2005 I paid just over $200 for one of these. I can’t remember what Son #2 paid for the one we installed a year ago this past winter but it was a little over $400 and it had an 8 year warranty, I think. I know it was more than 6 years. :confuse:
So, your $500 is close but the $1100 is high at least here in the US.

My new 80 gallon electric water heater was $815 which included installation and tax. With four bathrooms, we felt that we needed that size. A 40 gallon water heater serves the hot tub in the master bath.
You can always look to me as an example of what can happen if you don't work hard...

I'm still on the original 50 gallon gas water heater that was installed when our house was built in 2000. My house has 2.5 baths and we've rarely had a problem running out of hot water.
My folks installed a tankless water heater in their house a few years ago. They live in Southern California, so the ambient water temp is fairly high, so the water heater doesn't have to do too much work.
Not sure that we can go tankless here in Colorado.
Just before we were forced to take my mother's car away from her, she drove into a doctor's office waiting room. Thank goodness the patients scattered and no one was hurt. In her confusion, she thought that the gas was the brake. A lot of damage was done to the doctor's office. Her big Buick had one dent in the bumper and one broken head light.
When she finally went to the nursing home, they couldn't do a thing with her. They told me that they were going to have to kick her out if I didn't do something. I took her Buick to the nursing home and parked it outside of her window. Naturally, she didn't drive it, but it calmed her right down knowing that her car was there. The Man upstairs guided me on that one.
I thought about a tankless water heater but was advised against it because of the extreme humidity that we have here. I have no clue as to what that meant.
And neither do I. :confuse: Insulating the water lines right at the heat source solves a pipe sweating problem.
From everything I’ve heard the south is one of the best candidates for tank-less water heaters. I know you guys have crawl spaces so if an 80 gallon tank can be squeezed in there a tank-less should be no problem. If your tank is in the garage (I’ve seen that too) that’s even easier for the 220 volt line because that’s usually where the breaker panel is located.
I wouldn’t change until the old unit goes but it is something that you could consider. Me, in PA, no chance.

Instead of a hot water tank, we have a tankless electric water heating element. We've had it for 7 years and have never had any problems with it. It never runs out of hot water because it heats every drop you use. I think it cost us $650 including installation. Best investment we ever made.

Well, that ought to answer the high humidity concern that Richard was cautioned about. Not too many places have higher humidity than southern Florida. I take it your system is in the garage. My Delray Beach brother has his tank located in the garage and all of the newer houses I saw down there were the same.

I read that and got all confused. How can you have a hot water heater under the house and still vent it? In New England, electric water heaters are rare. Gas is more common.
Well that ought to answer the high humidity concern
*jmonroe, I don't think our set-up answers any concerns. We are in a 1700 sq.ft. condo with 2 baths, 2 bedrooms, a jallosey porch/patio, dining room, huge living room and large kitchen. The water heating element is in a closet adjacent to the master bath where the water tank used to be. Ours is electric because we have no natural gas service here.
If you want gas cooking here in south Florida, you need a propane tank.
I am trying to figure out the humidity angle. Our condo is all central air so we don't have humidity problems in the condo. I can't understand the humidity problem though, unless it is the water feed to the unit. That could create a problem if the heating system for the water is outdoors or in an area not dehumidified.
I wonder if the unit itself malfunctions in high humidity (if it's electric).
Otherwise, I have no idea why humidity could be a problem.
>I took her Buick to the nursing home and parked it outside of her window. Naturally, she didn't drive it, but it calmed her right down knowing that her car was there.
Buicks are wonderful cars. We should talk about them as much as BMW's here.
I recall back in the late 80s my elderly aunt had driven into the side of the local funeral home
Yeh, when I was a kid, a friends mother drove her car right into a little parking attendants stand at Crystal Beach on Lake Erie. She knocked it right over on its's side. After that, if his mother was driving he crouched down on the floor in the rear because he was always so embarrassed. The attendant was not in the booth at the time.
$350,000 to good old Jimmy! You gotta wonder about some things
If you missed some posts you could have missed GGs incredible Audi story, Monroes Hyundai story that we aren't supposed to talk about any more, my amazing refund from the plumber, and I still like my "How we went out in the morning to buy a BMW and ended up coming home with a new Audi" story. Also Mako's new Mustang, Roadburners new 328, and I am sure I left out some other hi-lites, oh yes, what you have been missing if you don't eat at Chick-fil-A .
That's gorgeous...there aren't too many 87s around that look that good today. In some ways I like that car more than the new 5 Series. Classic lines and not as swoopy. The color is a great one for that year too, a new 5 Series wouldn't work in that color...they are too big for red.
I read that and got all confused. How can you have a hot water heater under the house and still vent it? In New England, electric water heaters are rare. Gas is more common.
When I lived in SC I had a crawl space. It wasn’t really a crawl space because the lot sloped toward the back and the back of the house was out of the ground enough for a 50 gallon gas water heater to be installed. Right off of the top of the heater a 90 degree elbow took the vent right out the side of the house. It was a compound type of unit, air supply for combustion and heat from the water heater combustion process all in one.
The installation was a lot easier than with a basement in the two story house I have now where the vent for the water heater has to go to the roof.

80 gallon electric water heater was $815 which included installation and tax. With four bathrooms, we felt that we needed that size.
But, the house only has two people in it 98% of the time and you can only be using at most 2 bathrooms at any one time...not 4, unless you have a real problem (maybe those KFC chicken pot pies  )
Was the availability of records a big factor in your purchase?
I'd say it was a big factor. I've passed on a few cars at dealerships because there was no maintenance records, none listed on Carfax report either. Doesn't mean maintenance wasn't done, but just to be on the safe side.
The fact the seller recently had the 60k mile service done at a cost of $500 was a good selling point too. The car was tuned up, coolant flush, trans flush, oil and filter... everything inspected. Tires do need to be rotated though.
I can't recall ever getting a crack in my windshield, due to rock being kicked up on interstate. Maybe 20 years ago in an old beater. Within 6 months of getting our new 2004 MPV, the wife got a chip in windshield while driving home. Repaired and you could hardly notice it, but still, why's it got to happen with a brand new car?
Same thing just happend a few days ago with our new Hyundai Veracruz. Wife is driving home, a "rock that came out of no where" jumps up and leaves a nice little chip with 4 spider legs in middle of windshield. What are the stinking odds?
*driver, believe me when I say that Chick-Fil-A is fantastic, HOWEVER, I-75 is your most direct route to Tampa. Why take a longer route just to taste some good chicken? I'm sure they have CFA's in or around Tampa-St.Pete. No fast food restaurant is worth adding 200+ miles to an already long trip! Don't you agree?

Buicks are wonderful cars. We should talk about them as much as BMW's here.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Yeh, when I was a kid, a friends mother drove her car right into a little parking attendants stand at Crystal Beach on Lake Erie. She knocked it right over on its's side. After that, if his mother was driving he crouched down on the floor in the rear because he was always so embarrassed. The attendant was not in the booth at the time.
$350,000 to good old Jimmy! You gotta wonder about some things

At least you are honest!

Both my furnaces are like that.
Here's the super deluxe model from Sears for $1100. I don't know what it does, probably gets your favorite TV shows or something.
I am sure the same model will cost less in the U.S.
On this page you will see the Canadian Sears models from $500 to $1100.

For some reason I can't go on the Sears or Home Depot US sites.

I'd love to do that and maybe we will go that way one time...I think it is I-77.
I-75 goes through Tennessee, where I got my speeding ticket

But, the house only has two people in it 98% of the time and you can only be using at most 2 bathrooms at any one time...not 4, unless you have a real problem (maybe those KFC chicken pot pies  )

LOL. :P
