Things don't look very good for those of us living in South Florida. From what the National Hurricane Center in Miami is saying now, the storm is expected to become a hurricane by late tonight or early tomorrow morning. The path they expect it to take would put those of us in north Broward County on the "dirty side" (northeast side) of the storm which means tons of rain and heavy winds. We are already getting preliminary squalls, thunder and lightening ahead of the storm.
We will begin to fill our gallon jugs with water later this afternoon. We did our shopping yesterday and I topped the tank off in the Lexus. Nothing more to do now but wait and see.
I still remember Wilma and the 5 days of no water and electricity. I sure hope that doesn't happen again. I had to go down to our pool several times a day to fill jugs with enough water so we could flush the toilets.
I wouldn't buy a spark plug from that Hyundai dealer. They are (or at least were) a very unprofessional group. The sales manager tried to play me for a fool marking up the money factor and telling me 650 /month was a great deal on a Genesis at the time. Yeah, ok. When I told the manager they marked up the MF he got nasty and started yelling I didn't know what I was talking about.
I got right up and walked out.

Driver and Mako congrats on the rides.
Mike, Fezo keep your chin up through your health issues. We are all pulling for you.
Richard, glad you got the Sebring fixed to your satisfaction.
Oldfarmer, I like that Cougar. Those are the correct wheels. My Mother had a 96 thunderbird (clone of Cougar). It was a really nice car. It was the 3.8 V6, so it was a little slow. The 4.6 V8 is such a better choice in those cars.
Stopped over at the Hyundai store to at least look at the new Santa Fe
Test drove the 2012 Santa Fe, thought it really nice. Would have liked to have waited for the newer model, with 3rd row seating, but wife wanted the Veracruz and did not want to wait for the new model of Santa Fe to come out. Like Lola, what Mrs. Jip wants... she usually gets.
I posted this about a week ago in anticipation of the worst part of the hurricane season.
June too soon. July stand by. August you must. September remember. October, all over.
It is hurricane season and I have a curious question for those of you living in the Florida hurricane belt.
In the event of a hurricane, where do you garage your car? In other words is there a hurricane shelter for cars? And as to dealerships, how do they protect all these cars from flying debris and water damage?
Also, is there specific hurricane insurance coverage for cars similar to flood damage coverage for homes? Many cars on the auction block come from Florida and if they are exposed to sea water (directly or mist) rust could be a serious problem. Don’t know if this is a non-issue for others but I probably would not buy a used car in Florida for exactly those reasons.
we went to Burns today. Way too small for the business they are doing these days, and the lot is a disaster, but we like it there a lot better.
funny thing about the turnersville group, is that every other showroom we went in was wonderful friendly, no pressure, good vibes. Just the Hyundai store seems to be a little more "old school".
I told the sales guy at Burns today they should take over the buick/GMC building since it was bigger, and he laughed and agreed 9quietly) that they really did not need that much room over there! The Hyundai store though is always packed.
Jip, I explained the new model names (and about the upcoming Veracruz replacement) to my wife, and she asked if we should wait for that. Told her no, since we don't need bigger or thristier, or the tiny 3rd row.
The dealer was up to I think 5 Santa Fes on the lot. nothing that was right for us, even if we wanted to buy today, so most likely if we decide to go with one, it will have to be an order (however that works with Hyundai), or at least a locate with plenty of lead time.
No, there is no need for hurricane insurance because your comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by storms. As for special parking, no, not where I live in North Broward County. I park with the front of my car facing our 4 story building - east north east. Most storms like this cause east, east north east, east south east and southerly winds. So the building protects the car from winds like those expected from Isaac. As the storm moves northwest, the backside of the storm will cause southwest and westerly winds. That's when I'll move the car to the other side of the building. I had no damage to my car from Hurricane Wilma.
They just announced that schools and county offices will be closed Monday. We are under a tropical storm "warning" right now, but Miami is under the same warning, but they also are on a hurricane "watch". Miami is about 45 miles south of us.
not sure. If you can't special order, they usually can do some kind of port allocation grab (find out what exists or is on the schedule, and put a claim to it).
We decided there are 2 colors we like, with one being the favorite, but still need to see the Blue in person to see if that needs to be added to the list.
so, the odds of finding the one color we pick, equipped the right way, are pretty low. So we either order it, or just tell them to go find it (well, tell about 5 dealers that whoever lands one first at the price we want to pay, wins!)
Don’t know if this is a non-issue for others but I probably would not buy a used car in Florida for exactly those reasons.
I have also seen some beautiful older and used cars for sale in Florida. Since they don't rust you can get some older cars in great shape. Also, you can get some nice low mileage cars that someone can't drive any more.
I agree, you have to be careful about water damage, especially cars from New Orleans, but, if you can find the right car in Florida you might get a real winner.
We are under a tropical storm "warning" right now,
That sounds not quite as ominous. We are about 20 miles South of Tampa and about 10 miles East of Tampa, so I am hoping we will miss this one.
This has been an expensive week so far, so I hope that storm doesn't hit us. $25K for the Audi (difference), $4000 to replace the trees my neighbor took out to build his hole in the ground, I mean pool. And we had to pay $1500 to get some lumps removed from Gigi (the little dog - just in case it is best to be clear).
With that and the $1000 to the plumber we have just about used up the $16000 in savings between the bmw and Audi. There is no justice in the world.
(well, tell about 5 dealers that whoever lands one first at the price we want to pay, wins!)
I forget, did you have a trade-in? Did you find out what a new Hyundai should cost, and did you calculate the price you want to pay?
Are you going to throw it out there or would you negotiate with one dealer at a time? If it is like Passats or BMW, the dealer will find one and work with another dealer to bring one in. Can you "build one" online, that helps to choose a color, but they never really look the same in real life.
I take it you aren't in a rush, when are you aiming for?
I was going to get a trade offer, but am planning to sell the van on the side. There is an advantage to having a 1 owner, relatively low mile (75K on a 2005) Honda. They sell quick.
so, I can sell that first or but the new one and sell it afterwards, whatever works. I figure as soon as we are moving into the actual purchase phase, I will advertise the Van, and if it sells, great! well, other than having only 1 car, which is not so great... But, that way, I can shoot for the moon and hold out for it.
I even plan to go out and detail it up tomorrow. Just in case.
We still have to decide exactly what we want (model/color/equipment), and once we have that, I'll formulate the offer. Unless we just get the Acura, in which case I already have the price fixed.
assuming it is the Hyundai, I'll go back to my guy at Burns, and tell him what we want, and what the offer is (knowing they will have to find it). If they take it, great. if they play hardball, I will hit up a few other dealers in the area. There are some cutthroat ones out there that will be looking for a deal!
It might be early, but I will shoot for an invoice deal, and be ready to walk. Not being rushed is certainly to out benefit.
oh, timing? My wife a new car. now. She is getting really antsy. Now, if we were ordered something now even if it was going to take a couple months to arrive, she would be satisfied. But she knows it might take a little longer, but she really wants it now.
Move up to Tampa. I hear that Tampa bay area hasn't had a direct hit since the 1930s. That's one of the reasons I want to retire there. That, and the rust free cars.

When I was in the car business (2000-2009), if a customer came in with a trade that was manufactured in Korea (Huyandi or Kia), I could not give them very much on their trade because the wholesale value of those cars was so depressed. Toward the end of my career in the car business, these Korean vehicles began to increase in value and demand for these cars and SUV's picked up substantially. The quality of the "build" improved significantly, as well.
Now, some of the best built, best priced and highest demand vehicles include the Optima, Sante Fe, Elantra, Sonata and Genesis. The prestige of the Korean vehicles has finally arrived. The Japanese vehicles went through the same metamorphosis back in the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's.
I would think that in the next 5-10 years, the Korean entries will become even more desirable and better built than Nissan and Toyota.
Now, some of the best built, best priced and highest demand vehicles include the Optima, Sante Fe, Elantra, Sonata and Genesis.
Don't know about the best built but certainly the Optima and the Elantra are the most elegantly styled sedans sold today. In terms of price those models are not quite the deals they used to be as they are beginning to demand a premium for the aura of elegance and sophistication they convey.
When it comes to marketing and promotion Hyundai is no slouch either. At the auto show in Boston two years ago every Hyundai model was on display from the Accent to the Equus. And unlike the “stuffy” German marks that were roped and closed shut, one could sit in the Equus and had the opportunity to evaluate visibility, ergonomics, tactile feel, and fit and finish.
Not to be outdone Kia had about 12 copies of the newly released Optima on hand available for test drives. To the best of my recollection I don’t remember any other car maker with a similar promotion.
Now that Hyundai has the respect of car manufacturers as well as consumers it is demanding that its cars are sold in separate and stand-alone facilities. It no longer wants to be sold side-by-side with Chevys. As a Chevy manager once told me “Hyundai does not want to play in the same sandbox with other makes.”
my wife and I drove a new santa fe (turbo model) yesterday. it was very, very nice. hide the badges, and it could pass for a much more premium brand. drove nice, loaded with features, and very comfy seats. Seemed well put together with nice quality materials too.
"With that and the $1000 to the plumber we have just about used up the $16000 in savings between the bmw and Audi."
Just think driver, you could have saved even more by buying the Acura TL and have a car that got a "Good" (passing) grade on the IIHS new more stringent offset crash test. The Audi A4 flunked meaning it would have critically injured or killed the driver as did the Mercedes C Class. Mercedes has contested their methodology, but I guess Audi has accepted the findings without comment. A couple of Lexi were at the bottom while a Volvo and something else were at the top.
I can tell you that once you've been in an accident on the interstate, safety trumps a lot of other concerns including "feel for the road", high tech audio and leather seats. Strange that these luxury brands wouldn't be putting more into that end of things, but then no one gets very excited about crumple zones and airbags until you need them--which is hopefully never--and everyone wants it a little lighter, more fuel efficient and faster.
What I learned from those tests is that if you can't possibly avoid the other car, tree, or whatever, then try to hit it dead center !!!
Those car mfgs. are a sneaky bunch. I remember one test a few years ago involved backing into a steel post, dead center. After a couple of years of testing, the test folks realized that the mfgs. had started putting extra padding, bracing etc. in the center of the rear bumper.
>With that and the $1000 to the plumber we have just about used up the $16000 in savings between the bmw and Audi.
Obviously, the next step is to go car shopping. Shop BMW and then buy an Audi instead. You will have saved another $16000 and you'll be all set again. You'll have even more money to spend.
Just think driver, you could have saved even more by buying the Acura TL
Safety is a major concern and the Audi got a strong 5 star rating until this last test, which seemed to come from nowhere....why don't they announce what tests they will be doing in the future.
Although the Acura is certainly a car I would consider, I would still take the Audi because I think it is pretty safe. European manufacturers really try, they study accidents, and they take extra measures to do as much as possible to make their cars as safe as possible. I think most manufacturers are taking safety seriously, and I would steer clear if a car got a bad rating on the tests to date, but this new one couldn't be planned for. The started testing luxury cars first, so it will be interesting to see how many cars actually do pass this new test.
..if you can't say something nice about...don't say anything at all!
Well said. We brought the car home on Wednesday and I saw that report on the news that evening. It wouldn't have changed what we bought. Most cars are getting 5 star crash ratings these days, and they can keep devising new tests all the time....so at some point you just have to take your chances. It's like buying a new computer, phone TV, anything these days, they will come out with a better one right after you buy one!
I am glad you said the part about if you can't say anything nice........that was my thought too.....
I guess I could have said, "...*driver, enjoy your new car!"
By gosh, I think I did tell you that, didn't I, in one of my posts to you!
I hane not been able to find out how the 2013 Lexus GS350 did on that offset front crash test because I don't know if it has been tested yet. But I can tell you that I, too, would have still bought the same car. With the exception of the balancing problem I had with the wheels/tires, and the steep learning curve necessary to master the advanced technology, the car is magnificent.
Speaking of technology learning curves, I just discovered three bits of data that the display can produce that I did not know it could:
1. I can display a round, large compass on the right screen in two different protocols,
2. I cab display fuel economy history by the minute on a bar graph going back 30 minutes,
3. I can replace the GPS map on the main, left screen with RDS and HD data by frequency and/or channel (if satellite radio) so that the map is not on constantly.
And remember, the car is turning 4 months old this week. I seem to find something new on this car every week. It was only 4 weeks ago that I finally found out about the emergency/parking brake - where it was and how to get it to work. Electronic parking brakes - good grief!
Shop BMW and then buy an Audi instead. You will have saved another $16000 and you'll be all set again.
What a brilliant idea. Can I use it for my next edition of the "Driver Method of Justifying Anything You Buy"?
I found out one thing today, I spent a very frustrating 40 minutes trying to set up Homelink. First I read what was on the media unit in the car...hold remote in front of grill and press buttons until you see flashing etc. Didn't work.
The I found another way to do it on the media unit. Press button on overhead unit until light comes on and press down on the master button for the media unit. No go!
Then found instructions on the internet for a Wayne Dalton opener. Press button on the overhead unit until red light comes on. Press button in the car you want to use for Homelink until the overhead unit flashes 3X. Took 5 minutes once I knew what I was doing.
Yes, you definitely did. I know what you mean about finding out new things all the time. I found that oil guage on the unit and all kinds of graphs and statistics about fuel consumption. I can and often use a split screen in the bmw, half has the radio dial and the other half the GPS unit.
All kinds of information about next service stop. The Audi lets you balance the audio and make changes to the bass, treble etc. Also, you can change the sounds the car makes for warnings, how you want the lights to work (for example the lights to stay on for a minute when you leave the car). There's more there than I will ever learn how to use or even know about.
If I get a slow day I will have to study that device a lot more.
Hey Mike, what's happening with Isaac? Last tracker I saw had it going West a bit and hitting Biloxi. It isn't nice when you keep hoping it goes in someone elses direction.
P.S. I don't think they tested too many cars yet, those were just the first group of cars tested from what I understand.
He has just reached Key West. We are getting what they call "rain and wind bands caused by the storm's counter-clockwise circulation. We've had about 6 inches of rain so far and wind gusts at around 55 mph. Winds are expected to subside tonight but rain is expected to continue through tomorrow. So we will probably venture out tomorrow, if the rain has ended.
Isaac is expected to strengthen to a full blown hurricane sometime tomorrow. The ocean's water temperature is in the mid-80's F which fuels these storms. I don't go into the ocean down here because we have swimming pools, but I can tell you that the ocean along the coast is like bath water this time of year.
We got very lucky with this tropical storm here in Florida. No power outages and few downed trees.
We've had about 6 inches of rain so far and wind gusts at around 55 mph
Hope that's the worst of it. I am wondering how people take their dogs outside.
I think the last hurricane we had in the Toronto area was hurricane Hazel in 1953. Occassionally we get lots of rain, but we don't seem to get too many hurricanes, thank goodness.
I think it is. We just had a squall go through and dump at least another inch of rain. With the storm "bands" comes not just cloud bursts, but the winds go up to 50+mph. After about 15-20 minutes, the winds subside and the rain stops. Then, about 30 minutes later, another band will come through.
I'm just worried about the northern gulf coast, especially Mobile and New Orleans. Let's pray the storm does not hit the gulf coast as a hurricane, although that's what the Nat'l Hurricane Center in Miami is predicting.
I know that I am a dinosaur when it comes to tech stuff but any feature that takes weeks or months to discover isn't worth having. My newer cars have a compass on the dash and while it's a cute feature, if I ever don't know what direction I'm going on my own, I'll hang up the keys.
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
Touché, *oldfarmer, touché! Trying to master the technology on my new car was quite a task and most of the technology is a luxury, not a necessity to get from one place to another.
There are, however, certain technology advances which should be part of the standard equipment offered on all cars. I believe these to be:
*blind spot monitor *adaptive front headlights that swivel a certain amount in the direction of a turn *back-up camera *park assist sensors that alert you when an obstruction is close *bluetooth connectivity for cell phones. *daytime running lights *automatic rain-sensing wipers
I'm sure most posters here would have additional suggestions, but at the very least, these additions to standard equipment would save lives and reduce injuries and property damage.
Thanks for that heads up, Mike CNBC has some great specials. Very informative stuff usually from a money making point of view. I just put it on the DVR record list. Along with the BMW show currently on.
They showed the dealership and owner of the dealership where I bought my car - Lexus of Pembroke Pines/Craig Zinn owner. And they do have free manicures, sandwiches, haircuts, gyms, etc. small world!
Well, I'll grant you that some of those might improve safety given the sorry state of today's drivers but it's no substitute for good driving skills. I've driven a school bus for 22 years without those items and suffered many a near miss from distracted or just plain bad drivers. I guess my real concern with tech gadgets is the habit they have of breaking down as the car ages.
BTW, didn't the Tucker in the 40s have movable headlights?

He really could have saved by buying that Cougar I posted. He'd have about $45k to spend on dogs and plumbing
lol And really true...you got to buy what you love.
My brother who always buys the cheapest bought an Accent - 2 door. It's OK, but the wheels look like they came off a Lawn Boy. He always got a Civic, but they gave him $4000 for his 10 year old Civic, and he paid $10000 to get a 2012 Accent.
That means he drove his Civic for about $1000 a year, but I doubt he had any fun driving it. He's happy though, he has saved a ton of money over the years....I wouldn't change places and want to drive an Accent.
CNBC is going to air a special on the history of dealerships
I just got in so saw the last half hour. They seem to repeat their programs quite often so if you see it on again let us know. It looked quite interesting and was right on topic.
I agree, they have some good business programs, especially some of the biographies and shows like "American Greed".
GOOD, I AM GLAD YOU MISSED IT!. Better you should be enjoying yourself after what you have been through. Being with family and friends is much more important than a TV program on cars and dealerships!!!

A lesson learned? Don't read my posts and drink beer at the same time? I would have thought you had learned that by now!

Those car mfgs. are a sneaky bunch. I remember one test a few years ago involved backing into a steel post, dead center. After a couple of years of testing, the test folks realized that the mfgs. had started putting extra padding, bracing etc. in the center of the rear bumper.

Obviously, the next step is to go car shopping. Shop BMW and then buy an Audi instead. You will have saved another $16000 and you'll be all set again. You'll have even more money to spend.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Safety is a major concern and the Audi got a strong 5 star rating until this last test, which seemed to come from nowhere....why don't they announce what tests they will be doing in the future.

Sometimes the old fashioned way works best.

Hope that's the worst of it. I am wondering how people take their dogs outside.
I think the last hurricane we had in the Toronto area was hurricane Hazel in 1953. Occassionally we get lots of rain, but we don't seem to get too many hurricanes, thank goodness.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
I think it is. We just had a squall go through and dump at least another inch of rain. With the storm "bands" comes not just cloud bursts, but the winds go up to 50+mph. After about 15-20 minutes, the winds subside and the rain stops. Then, about 30 minutes later, another band will come through.
I'm just worried about the northern gulf coast, especially Mobile and New Orleans. Let's pray the storm does not hit the gulf coast as a hurricane, although that's what the Nat'l Hurricane Center in Miami is predicting.

He really could have saved by buying that Cougar I posted. He'd have about $45k to spend on dogs and plumbing. :P
In the end you have to buy what you want or you'll always be wondering "what if?"

I know that I am a dinosaur when it comes to tech stuff but any feature that takes weeks or months to discover isn't worth having. My newer cars have a compass on the dash and while it's a cute feature, if I ever don't know what direction I'm going on my own, I'll hang up the keys.

Touché, *oldfarmer, touché! Trying to master the technology on my new car was quite a task and most of the technology is a luxury, not a necessity to get from one place to another.
There are, however, certain technology advances which should be part of the standard equipment offered on all cars. I believe these to be:
*blind spot monitor
*adaptive front headlights that swivel a certain amount in the direction of a turn
*back-up camera
*park assist sensors that alert you when an obstruction is close
*bluetooth connectivity for cell phones.
*daytime running lights
*automatic rain-sensing wipers
I'm sure most posters here would have additional suggestions, but at the very least, these additions to standard equipment would save lives and reduce injuries and property damage.

Let's compare notes after it airs to see if we learned anything new!

BTW, didn't the Tucker in the 40s have movable headlights?

lol And really true...you got to buy what you love.
