A person doesn't have to gain weight on a cruise. They always have healthy alternatives and the portions they serve are very small. If they are TOO small, they are happy to bring you more.
I did laps on the deck every morning and ate what I wanted to. Gained four pounds but have already lost two of those.
No Midnight Buffet on Holland America! Most of the people are in bed by 8:00!
I learned how to REALLY drive in a car much like that. He was an older gentleman that had previously done some bootlegging, was a war veteran and no longer driving. It was a new Chevy SW in 1968 (maybe a Caprice). I was awaiting Navy boot camp and his son was in Viet Nam so he had me drive him to the VA in Pittsburgh.
I learned how to look further ahead, leave myself an escape lane, not to tailgate and always leave room for the error of other drivers. Guy was an excellent teacher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Nomad
I'd have to make a bargain with myself that involved me being allowed to eat whatever I wanted and be resigned to gaining weight, but then have a plan to lose it afterward. It's only bad if you KEEP the weight.

learned how to REALLY drive in a car much like that.
Chevy made some nice looking wagons over the years. I read over that wikipedia article and I was reminded how nice some of those D3 cars were in their day....I particularly liked the 60 wagon they showed.
Ford had some good years in there too, I like the 57, 59 and 65 Fords and I liked Chryslers with fins....the 57 to 59 models.
I'd add a picture of the 60 Chev but images have disappeared again.
but then have a plan to lose it afterward. It's only bad if you KEEP the weight.
Exactly....I have my baseline weight number....if I go over, which isn't hard to do, I have to try to get it back to the magic number as soon as possible....before things get out of control and I become a blimp.
The 1988 Chev was listed at $1000 firm, "AS IS". I thought the guy I replied to would be serious since he was restoring two 88 Pontiacs. He offered $600 and came up to $700. My friend won't sell it for less than $1000....says it is good for storage!!!!!!!!!
That reminds me, one guy in our tennis group leases all his cars, and he trades in every 3 years for a new Civic. He got tired of the idiots he would have to deal with if he sold privately. And then he got tired of dealers having all kinds of reasons to give him less for his trade in. He knows he will pay more to lease, but he likes it because it is hassle free, just take back his car and get a new one in 3 years.
That's in much better shape that the stock picture you posted. What happened to the $425 price? "candidate for restoration". Boy, you sure are a Craigslist poster.
I thought I was on to my next fantasy cheap car yesterday. It was a 1991 Buick Regal (a style I like) with only 70k miles. It was only a few miles away and from the picture was in perfect condition. THAT in itself was unique here in rustland. The owner said "best offer".
Edmunds TMV was only $1126 so I was all set to throw an offer for $1000 and go as high as $1200. Until...

I don't think I offered it at $425 but it might only be worth that. The elderly friend who has it is a hoarder....doesn't want to give up anything. The car is blocking his house and care givers and visitors have a hard time going around it - it will be a real problem in the winter time.
He will not sell it for less than $1000....not one penny less. As he says it is great for storage, if he bought a shed it would cost $600. This way he can store lots of good junk in it.
I think the resoration angle is the best hope of getting $1000 for it. The guy with the 2 Pontiacs emailed to say his $700 offer seemed fair and he would buy it for that. I told him if it was me, the car would be his...but, it is out of my hands.
I particularly like the Buick Century and Olds Cieras.
This fellow with the 88 Caprice had a Chev Cavalier wagon of that design...he only buys Chevs even though he could buy a Cadillac or Buick! They were well designed for a wagon.........and they weren't bad cars. I had a company 84 Cierra that was a very pleasant car. Then I got an 86 Celebrity...basically the same car but the Cierra had much better handling and ride. Each division made their own design tweaks. I just liked the idea of a Celebrity Euro model, but it wasn't very Euro unfortunately.
They also had 396, 400, 427, and 454 cubic inch engines, at one time or another.
Interestingly enough, the 400 was a small block.
If memory serves, Oldsmobile had a 425 at one time, didn't they? I definitely rememember a 455, but going back even further, I believe there was a 425. My mother had a 1968 Olds 88 with the 455 cid.
Isell, you really know your cars to catch that. I'll have to double check the car because the elderly owner said it had 425 hp. I have changed the ad (before I get sued) to say it had a V8 engine - until I check it out. This from wikipedia referring to 1988 Caprice,
The engine line-up received only minor changes. The 4.3 L V6 and the 305 cu in V8 were updated with roller lifters and center bolt valve covers. The 305 cu in had a 5 hp (3.7 kW) rating increase and was now rated at 170 hp (127 kW) and 250 lb·ft (339 N·m). The 307 cu in Oldsmobile-built V8 remained unchanged and was the only available engine for the station wagons. Some Canadian-sold Chevrolet Caprice sedans used the 307 cu in Oldsmobile-built V8 in place of the Chevrolet-built 305 cu in engine during the 1987 model year.
Are you sure those aren't the numbers from 1968, instead of 1988?
You're right too kyfdx. It is early and I was looking at the 1968 Caprice. I changed my answer then saw your post.
I think we are caught up now...you guys are good with your old Chevys. I don't think I will tell the old guy, he says it was a beautiful highway cruiser and he went to Florida in it 5 times.....it just cruised along with those 425 HPs.
two versions of the 400, one a big block, one a small block?
Give or take a few cubic inches they were similar in bore and stroke, but that's where it ended. You needed only to look at the size of the valve covers to tell big block from small. 409, 396 were huge. 400, 350 were normal.
350 was first used in the 67 Camaro SS (I had one). It was rated at 292 HP for insurance purposes but actually hit the 1 HP per cubic inch threshold.
1972 was the last of the muscle cars. By 74, unleaded fuel and CAFE standards made everything run poorly. A 77 Vette had only 210 HP (my dad had one). It was a dog. 73 to the early 80s was a bad time for Detroit. Then came the fox body Mustang with the 5.0 (302 cu in) and here we are today.
Back from some nuttiness. One of our Hope Lodge guys died last week. The funeral was the day before yesterday - around Cleveland. This was a guy who I expected to make it because he always made it sound like it wasn't a big deal. This was the first of several of these funerals (there have been at least 4 out of a reasonably small group) that I was OK enough to attend.
So I drive 3 hours to Wappinger's Falls, NY to the home of another of the survivors (She and I seem to be the ones from the group pretty well thriving) and the next morning she, her husband (who has become a close friend) and I drive (well he drove all the way) 8 hours to Cleveland, did the funeral, stayed overnight in a hotel and repeated the process in reverse yesterday. You might say I'ma little tired.

I don't know when I have been so moved by such a caring group of people. I never dreamed that my absence from this forum would have generated a "seek and find" endeavor. I have missed all of you and was so touched when I received the voice mail message from nyccarguy. So much has happened during the last four months which prevented me from being with you on a regular basis. First, you will notice a new tag name. My internet service terminated my account because we had moved. They had assured me that I could keep my same email address. That necessitated a new service provider and notifications to my contacts. Secondly, I had contracted with the local community college to assist some industry people with personnel problems. Those sessions have been more challenging that I had anticipated. Finally, I believe that we are making progress in human relations. Then came something totally unexpected. My nephew took a job with Donald Trump in Dubai. He and his wife were unable to take their two sons with them at first. We agreed to keep the boys for three months. It was quite an interesting summer. Being first time parents to a 16 year old and a 12 year old took some adjustment. Each day they wanted to swim, bowl, play golf, and shoot pool. We provided a constant taxi service, along with a kitchen that was open 24/7. Also, the washer and dryer ran constantly. During the interim, my wife developed fibromyalgia. The nerve endings all over her body were on fire. After 8 attempts at medications, we have found something that helps. Things are now beginning to calm down at last. We put the boys on the plane to Dubai; my wife is feeling better; and my work has reached a level of peace and civility.
I appreciate so much all of your kind posts regarding my absence. You are truly a great bunch of guys. The worst company car I ever had was an early 70's Ford Gran Torino. If the gas gauge got close to E, it meant you were out of gas. I ran out of gas a couple of times and actually coasted into my driveway once after a long trip.
I am about 6-1 and I could barely see over the steering wheel or out the side windows the beltline was so high. You practically sat on the floor and felt every bump.
When a co worker got fired I traded my Torino for his Olds Cutlass, also early 70's, and it was a great car.

One of my favorite cars was a 1971 Buick Rivera with the 455 engine. That thing would rise up and fly and was gorgeous inside and outside. Beautiful interior with wide front seats and butter soft tan leather. It was about 2 years old when I bought it and turned out to be one of my all time favorites.
Sterling I believe refers to Richard & his wife's dearly departed dog whom they loved very much.

When my father died, his wife asked me to come get what I wanted from the garage. I brought my best friend since grade school from PA along as he liked the Vette. It had a four speed and factory side exhaust which sounded good, but I had driven it so I knew.
I never liked the coke bottle design or the stick shift so I said it's all yours, have fun. He trailered it home, put new brakes and all kinds of go fast engine parts on it. All I remember was a burn on my leg from the side pipes (twice). He still has it.
Welcome back, Richard I knew it was you. You talked about a dog named Sterling.
Has anyone seen those ads for the new Infinity? Apparently it can tell you if there has been an accident two cars ahead of you. Nice to know but is it too much information? How is the guy behind me supposed to know my car is going to jam on the brakes?
Edmunds listed these safety features; Available safety features (grouped in various packages) include a 360-degree parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot/lane departure warning and prevention, and forward/back-up collision warning systems (which can automatically apply the brakes if a collision is deemed imminent). There's also Active Lane Control which can sense changing road surfaces or crosswinds and automatically add minor steering corrections, thus reducing driver effort and fatigue
Every time I see that commercial I wonder how the car can sense what is going to happen in front of the truck in front of it. Is the car physic? Does it have x-ray vision?
2011 Hyundai Sonata, 2014 BMW 428i convertible, 2015 Honda CTX700D
That youtube video shows you what you will see and it tells you what will happen to the car.....brakes go on, etc., but it doesn't explain how it actually works....probably too much for my mind to understand anyway.
I owned two 1965 Rivieras and they would lay a patch of rubber for as long as I wanted to hold the gas pedal down. You could literally watch the gas gauge drop. The ones with 2 4BBL carbs were even worse.
But what a magnificent car those were! Tight, taut, strong and they handled well for what they were. My favorite was the one that had almost every option they offered that year. It was yellow with a black vinyl top. It had the 340 HP 425 engine, deluxe interior, A/C, full power including windows, vent windows, AM-FM with reverb Autronic Eye, the nice wheels.
Few cars could outrun it including one VERY hot GTO one night!
The boatails were a love it or hate it car. The 1971's were the best and the best looking. They hadn't choked them with emission garbage at that point nor had they added the hideous 3 MPH bumpers.
Buicks were quality well built cars in those days.
I also had a loaded 1969. Another great car but it lacked the feel and vitality of my 1965's.

Yep, that is the ol' boatail all right. Mine was light tan with a dark brown roof and tan leather.

Edmunds listed these safety features;
Available safety features (grouped in various packages) include a 360-degree parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot/lane departure warning and prevention, and forward/back-up collision warning systems (which can automatically apply the brakes if a collision is deemed imminent). There's also Active Lane Control which can sense changing road surfaces or crosswinds and automatically add minor steering corrections, thus reducing driver effort and fatigue

A neighbor had one when I was a kid - I loved that car even in the poop brown color.
That's when cars were cars and, well, men were men.......
.......and sheep were nervous??
It'll take awhile to adjust to your new handle.
Thanks for the update.
That youtube video shows you what you will see and it tells you what will happen to the car.....brakes go on, etc., but it doesn't explain how it actually works....probably too much for my mind to understand anyway.

It also looks like Earl Schieb or Maaco painted it. Look at all of the overspray and I'm not sure the color is correct nor are those wheel covers.
And, the asking price seems nuts...who knows?
The 1989 is a disgrace to the Riviera name!
