    I love that movie Bullitt.
Here is one of my favorite images.
It's looking through the windshield of the Charger as they are looking for the Mustang, when it shows up in their rear view mirror, just as it comes over the rise behind it.

I saw that new Colorado as well. Chevy did a nice job modernizing the compact pickup. The problem is that the Tacoma is KING of this segment in durability, reliability, & resale value. But hey, with the right GM-esq incentives, rugged good looks, and diesel power & fuel economy, maybe the Colorado will be a good seller for GM.

Ever since my father in law had a GMC Canyon (Colorado twin) as a rental which enabled us to take a 2 piece china cabinet from someone's house my wife bought off Craig's list home in 1 trip, I've been intrigued (in the back of my mind) about pickup ownership. My problem is that when I "build" pickups that "look cool" like the Tacoma SR5, Silverdo Z71, F150 FX4 all start to get pricey. Maybe I could convince my Dad we need a pickup for work;)

I don't think the Charger was designed to do this:

RB, if I remember correctly you weren't impressed with a 528. Put the 535 into Sport or Sport + mode and take it for a spin, it is like having two very different cars in one.

Well, it's definitely faster, but all the Sport button does is sharpen up the throttle response and increase the steering effort. The steering feel is still MIA- I took an on-ramp at a pretty good clip and while it had a lot of grip the steering wasn't telling me anything. It's got decent power and it makes a great cruiser, but calling it a sport sedan is stretching it. It would make a great vacation car, but that's about all I'd want it for. For what it costs new I'd rather have a used E60 Alpina B7.

Count how many hubcaps the R/T loses- as well as how many times the same VW Beetle shows up on different streets/scenes...

I think I remember someone saying the Charger lost 5 wheel covers.
It's obvious some of the downhill chase scenes were reused.
Multiple of both cars were used in the film, but there is only so much abuse each one can take.
The was a lot suspension travel built into cars back then.
So was it sounds effects added, or was Steve McQueen that good at double clutching?

That may be a reflection of that DEALER rather than the BRAND!

For most car buyers-my wife included-the dealership experience plays a major role in determining whether their perception of the brand is positive or negative. For example, back in 1984(during the dark days of the voluntary import car quotas) my soon-to-be wife was looking for a new car. I suggested an Accord coupe. We spent a day visiting EVERY Honda dealer in Cincinnati and each tried to play some kind of game: four-square, giving only payment numbers and refusing to talk price, wanting a $500 deposit to take an offer to the SM, etc. Ever since that time a Honda has never made her short list. Ten years later we were interested in a Mitsubishi Montero SR and had a similar experience. One dealer even told me not to bother shopping around since you couldn't get an SR without ordering every available option(an outright lie). Still, my favorite was the Cincy Mitsu store running "INVOICE SALE!!! EVERY VEHICLE MARKED DOWN TO INVOICE!!!" screamer ads. I called up and asked if they would sell an SR at invoice and the guy told me to come in and make an offer and he would "try to work down to invoice." @sshole.
Have we ever looked at a Mitsubishi again? Three guesses and the first two don't count.

"...was Steve McQueen that good at double clutching..."

I'm sure he was even better than that. As I recall McQueen raced both cars and motorcycles and did his own driving stunt work in many movies although he only drove 10% of the Bullitt scene.

I have a vague memory of his wife blaming his lung cancer on the asbestos fire scarfs he used to wrap around his face while racing.

"Two 1968 390 V8 Ford Mustang GT fastbacks (325 hp) with four-speed manual transmissions were used for the chase scene, both loaned by the Ford Motor Company to Warner Bros. as part of a promotional agreement. The Mustangs' engines, brakes and suspensions were heavily modified for the chase by veteran car racer Max Balchowsky. Ford also originally loaned two Galaxie sedans for the chase scenes, but the producers found the cars too heavy for the jumps over the hills of San Francisco. They were replaced with two 1968 375 hp 440 Magnum V8-powered Dodge Chargers. The engines in both Chargers were left largely unmodified, but the suspensions were mildly upgraded to cope with the demands of the stunt work"

As to losing hubcaps, that's what happened to many cars back then. I pitched a few in the bushes myself.

Hanukkah 2013 is a pretty special year, as the first full day of Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving, something that won’t happen again for almost 80,000 years!

I agree totally. We use the 535Xi to get to Florida and back - 1400 miles each way and it makes a great highway cruiser....with the added Sport you can change the car into more of a sport sedan. But, it is a long ways from being even a 335. However, comfortable seats, lots of room, enough power and decent handling......make it a great car for long trips.

McQueen was the epitome of Cool. Le Mans is one of my all-time favorite films. McQueen had wanted to compete but was not allowed to- although he had done quite well in other endurance races such as the 12 Hours of Sebring, where he finished second. I seems like my son and I watch it every few months, but be aware that it is aimed at hardcore gearheads; don't expect non-car nuts to appreciate it.

Have you seen the movie "Rush", which has currently been playing?

That reminds me of one Thanksgiving about 20 or so years ago, I smoked a turkey especially for my in-laws who were visiting. I slow smoked it overnight, getting up about every two hours to add charcoal and wood, etc.

The thing turned out to be beautiful...to look at. Unfortunately, I left all the giblets inside the turkey in a plastic bag and it tasted awful. Dagnabbit !!

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I wrote this on Cardoc's site. This is my BIL who only bought GM trucks, but has now switched permanently to Toyotas. This will be his last GM car too!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------

My BIL has a 2008 Chev Impala, that he doesn't really like. It has less than 22K miles -it is used for 5 months in the winter in Florida.

Lately he has a noise from the air conditioner fan. It doesn't come on when the car is running but it comes on and makes noises when the engine is turned off.

GM won't help, the car is way past warranty period, even though it only has less than 22K miles on it. The dealer said they would do a free diagnosis test but that the instrument panel would probably have to come out to fix it. My BIL has considered taking it to an independent garage as they would probably do a free diagnosis anyway, and the actual repair may cost less.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like it might just be a part of the car's cooling system (radiator fan). These will run, at times, after you turn the engine off in order to cool the engine. If that is what he is hearing, it is just the car doing what it is supposed to do.

That's what I thought too. When I said that he said the fan doesn't work when the a/c is on, but it makes a big clunking noise and the fan goes when the engine is turned off. The dealership mentioned they think it is an actuator, I think I forgot to mention that.

    >fan doesn't work when the a/c is on, but it makes a big clunking noise and the fan goes when the engine is turned off.

Do you mean it sounds like the inside fan that moves the air inside the car won't work when it normally should. And that you mean it starts working when the AC is off?

Or do you mean other noises are the clunking and that starts when the engine is off?

Does the car have automatic AC with a digital readout?

To check if it's the actual blower motor working after the key is off and not working when the system should be on, the bottom of the round blower motor is above the passenger's left toe area. It can be seen without removing the hush panel. It can be touched to see if it's vibrating because it's running. Occasionally the blower motors lose their brush connection and tapping a toe against the motor with the key ON and the blower speed control ON will make contact and the blower stops working. But that wouldn't explain if the blower motor is working when it should be OFF.

There are 3 or 4 electric actuators that move various panels to direct the air flow inside the heater box or to blend the temperature of the air. Those occasionally make a clicking as they are trying to adjust when they are failing or the door they move has stuck or broken.

If it's a digital sytem, the electronic module that does the speed adjusting of the inside blower motor using an electronic circuit occasionally could go bad in earlier years of vehicles. They sometimes stayed on or came on even with the key OFF and could drain the battery. And they sometimes failed by giving odd reactions and strange speeds for the settings requesting on the control panel.

All these actuators, the blower speed control module, and the blower motor itself are replaceable and can be checked visually without removing the whole HVAC box.

"...left all the giblets inside in a plastic bag..."

My wife's rich relative did something similar when the fad of deep frying turkeys first started. Not only did he leave the bag inside but he forgot to thaw it properly so it was half cooked and h alf frozen. Also wherever it bought it from had let it thaw go bad and then re froze it.

It was the trifecta of bad birds--overcooked, undercooked and rotten all at the same time.

Houdini...I give you credit for trying...your in-laws should be thankful you went to the trouble.
Oldfarmer.....your wife's relative should be arrested for cooking a refrozen bird, that could have turned out nasty - good thing it didn't turn out.

    I think I printed my recipe for Popcorn Turkey before...here's the short version;

    BAKED STUFFED Turkey
    6-7 lb. baking turkey
    1 cup melted butter
1 cup stuffing (Pepperidge Farm is good.)
1 cup uncooked popcorn (ORVILLE REDENBACHERS LOW
    FAT) Salt/pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush turkey well with
    melted butter, salt, and pepper.

Fill cavity with stuffing and popcorn. Place in
baking pan with the neck end toward the back of the
oven. Listen for the popping sounds.

When the turkey's rear end blows the oven door open and
the turkey flies across the room, it is done.

    Ha ha. I like that.

The wife and I have a recipe we have used for years with our turkey. Rather than bread based stuffing, we cut up lemons and oranges and stuff the bird with the citrus, along with fresh rosemary.

Makes for a tender and juicy bird after cooking.

Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday - both of them!

I'll bet you he would have fed you the same load of garbage if you told him you exclusively use Exxon/Mobil Gas: "You should try Shell or even Costco."

Well someone beat me to it, not surprising since I have been away for a few days. But I wouldn't take you up on that bet. It's called CYA.

Back when I was in high school and just started driving my mom had a good friend who worked at the Standard Oil Building (since then the name has changed because everyone kept calling it by the the initials) and one day he me and a friend of mine a tour of the building. Well we ran into a high ranking corporate officer for Standard Oil and we were introduced to him. We chatted for a few minutes which included us starting to drive and the subject of gas came up. He told us that all gas is pretty much the same, gas in a certain area all comes from the same refinery and is blended almost the same way. What makes it Shell or Citgo or Wallys filling station gas is where the truck is sent.

The former is correct. All gas in an area pretty much comes from a few distribution points connected to a common pipeline.

The latter needs clarification. What makes it a brand is based on the additives (if any) mixed in with the gasoline on the tanker truck making the delivery. The bag of additives dropped into the tanker at the distribution point is based on where the gas is going.

"No tax? No problem, call 311 (city agency hotline) and ask for Mike (Bloomberg). If he [non-permissible content removed] its ok, then let me know."

Forget calling the city, call the state department of revenue, they would love to know who isn't charging sales tax as they get most of it.

Most times when someone doesn't get charged sales taxes is because the person completing the sale is an employee who isn't ringing up the sale and is pocketing the cash. This is why many places (especially fast food places where certain combinations are bought regularly and the staff would know the prices) have a policy where you get something if you are not offered a receipt. They are using you to keep the clerks who handle the money honest.

If this weren't a nice forum, I'd tell you what I really think of that family! They are a prime example of what is wrong in this country.

I will respectfully disagree with that. They are not what is wrong with this country, they are just a symptom of what is. What is wrong is the attitude of the general population that really cares who these people are and what they are doing. What is wrong is that there are far to many people who spend more time watching those idiots than they do with their own family. What is wrong is that there are way to many people who can tell you everything there is to know about that family but couldn't tell you what's going on in the Mid east and why it's important. What is wrong is that there are not enough people who will look at that family and say "Who are you and why the @#$% should I give a %$#@?"

IIRC any additional additives are added as the gas is being pumped into the tanker to insure thorough mixing. However any additives that are not either industry standard or required by law are few and in little quantities, else it drives up the cost of the gas and in a game that is measured in pennies that can be quite costly.

Thanks for the possible suggestions guys. My BIL had a chance to take the car in today so he got it fixed. It was an air conditioner actuator thathad to be replaced - cost $180.

    Here is the technical aspect of what ann actuator does and how it works - far to technical for me;

The electric actuators I mentioned cost about $30 each. #1, #6, and #32 in the diagram: one controls temp blend, other controls air flow direction, and and one to control intake choice of outside or recirculate.

I am not sure if the dash had to come out to install new ones. He thought it would cost about $400 but was happy it was $180.

This made me realize there are lots of parts we don't even think about in our cars. Actuators are very important, but, this one went before 22K miles. Think about all the other things that hopefully will last a lot longer before causing a problem.

A different topic now, my SIL is a super shopper, and she always goes out on Black Friday. Yesterday she got 2 32 inch TVs for $98 each, and a 60 inch TV for $699 - a name brand. I know they had 60 inch TVs for $400, but the picture quality is really inferior....not bad if you just need it for falling asleep in the bedroom or if you are half snapped most of the time.

They will unveil the new 2015 Mustang on December 5th. The technical rumors sound pretty interesting--450 hp. V8, independent suspension etc.

The real question is will it look better or worse than the current retro model? I'd hate to see it come out as just a 2 door Fusion. I've kinda set my obsession on getting a GT convertible as perhaps my last new car prior to senility so it would have to be special.

Any of you experts care to venture a guess on weather it will be an improvement?

Oldfarmer, it seems the 2015 Mustang will keep it's retro look and Mustang styling points but there will be some subtle but needed changes to make it attractive for todays buyers.

This site seems to have some basic info, and there are other sites if you check google - 2015 ford mustang

Good luck....that would be a nice car to finish with...while you still have all your marbles-if you can get in and out of it alright.

Hopefully they will have one of these at the Philly auto show in January. Probably will, but it will be up on a turnstile so no getting inside.

We're still here. The Edmunds site drank too much wine and the server passed out under the table again.

This time it required me to sign in just to view this board even though at the top of the page it clearly stated that I was logged in. :(

I know....I have been getting the gears (so to speak) all day...getting thrown back and forth, sometimes posts get posted sometimes not...I think it is a test - see if we are determined enough to remain a member.

Thanks so much for the positive analysis of the Silverado. It certainly is a beautiful truck. Like you, I don't believe that anyone could go wrong with the Ford or the Chevy. I'll be on the watch for that new Chevy Colorado. It sounds interesting. Thanks for the tip.
