My personal pet peeve is that silverware rack. Many people load the spoons so they "spoon" into each other instead of randomizing their positions, and that keeps the contact sides from getting proper cleaning from the spraying water and detergents. So people are eating with spoons that aren't properly washed.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Congrats with your new ride.
Even though Mrs. j’s ’05 XG 350 blew up prematurely with only 43K miles, I think Hyundai does make a pretty good car but it isn’t in my plans anymore, I don’t think. I say “think” because the SM at the dealership that didn’t go to bat for me when the car blew up, called on Saturday and wanted to unload a ’13 Genny R-Spec on me for an unbelievable price. Due in part I’m sure because it’s getting to the end of the model year. Even considering that, it was still way way better than the $3K that I told him he owed me. The conversation ended with me saying even if I wanted another Genny it wouldn’t be a ’13 at any price because the ’13 looks almost identical to the ’09 I have now, inside and out. I told him if he wants to call when the ‘14s are out I’d listen but I doubted that he could get to a good enough number for me to buy from them given my bad experience with what happened. The conversation ended with him saying, “don’t worry, I’ll call. You’d be surprised at what number you’ll hear from me”.
When I mentioned this to Mrs. j after I hung up she said are you really going to get another Hyundai? I said, “ it’s just talk right now, who knows”? . I go on to tell her the down side is that I don’t like any of the colors that Hyundai is offering on the ‘13 Genny’s and I suspect that will be the case with the ‘14s too. She says, “you mean they don’t make it in the red color (Cabernet Red Pearl) we have now”? I told her no they don’t and why would I buy another car with the same color, anyway? If I’m going to get a new car it has to look different, even if it is another brand. She said, “do any of the other cars you’re considering have the same type color selections as Hyundai”? I said, “yeah, probably”.
Then it hits me. Why are we even having this conversation? How is this happening? Has she just resigned herself to the idea that I will be getting another car or is she messing with me?
Congrats again. I’m sure you will be happy with your new Tucson. And yes, you owe us some details.

Does your state have lookup for the title and the value declared? You could see what the dealer actually sold it for.
Ohio's link--just need title number OR VIN
Is this the Florida equivalent?
I don't have a Florida VIN to try with it.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
If you look at a total of 10-12 glasses per day for two people, then you can surmise that the top rack of a dishwasher would fill fairly quickly---perhaps 24 glasses in two days. That does not leave much room for small bowls and plates. Then again, those who own a three rack dishwasher would have ample room.
If you prefer all small bowls and plates on the top rack, you might take my suggestion and hand wash your glasses. The benefit of that is no film on the glasses resulting in a sparkling, clear finish. Still, you must remember to leave the glasses in an upright position for drying in order to achieve that goal.
I need to go and find something to do. This is bordering on the ridiculous.

I agree, the silverware section is divided into 6 or 8 sections. I try to put one knife, one spoon and one fork in each. If I do put in 2 spoons in one section I make sure they aren't spooning each other, so to speak.

Thank you Richard. I didn't want to take the time to justify my family's unequal use of cups and plates!!
On a tangent - I have a 17 YO son. I'm glad he uses cups for his 8-10 servings of milk and juice a day rather than drinking directly from the cartons....
Think about this - I have a friend who dumps all the silverware in one drawer and doesn't sort any of it. He feels it's a waste of time to sort when putting them away. Instead he only sorts when he needs to use silverware.
Maybe that's where we differ to some extent. I run the dishwasher every night just before going to bed. Our electric rates go down substantially after 9 pm back home, and I do the same while here in Florida. So, the top rack would rarely ever fill up...only 24 glasses if we have company, even then pretty rare. A quick wash takes 30 minutes and a full wash takes one hour and 55 minutes...I think the drying time is a lot greater.
I don't like unloading 2 days worth of dishes first thing in the morning....just a personal choice. And, if I take a little longer getting ready in the morning and if I am lucky my wife will do it before I get there...better chance if it isn't filled to capacity.
btw...I don't think we own 24 cups and drinking glasses in each home...unless you count wine and liqueur glasses too!

Almost the opposite...no ability in mathematics and I don't know a thing about engineering. Thank goodness I know something about books and the distribution of books or we would probably be homeless.
Just common sense my good man. Tall tub dishwashers were made that way for a reason.....so, who am I to defy science. I just go along with the experts who design them.
And, having a bit of fun with you at the same time.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You would think an engineer, out of all people, should be able to load a dishwasher with maximum efficiency. Even if not necessary, you should take pride in a job well done. Your wife can tell her friends what a magnificent job you do....don't let that training be wasted.

LOL. I'm just giving you a hard time. If a 2014 Genny makes you and the Mrs happy, then that fact matters most.
Also let him know that several thousand of your on-line friends, who are familiar with the situation, are waiting to see what happens.

Believe me I’m not ashamed of not making a project out of nothing. One of the reasons my old employer asked me to come back as a consultant was to not waste time on things that don’t require over-engineering and I have complied with that. Honest, I can get into the last decimal place with the best of them but why re-invent the wheel. If it’s round enough to roll and that is all that is required then I go with it like it is. If I have to make it quieter and prettier while it’s rolling I can do that too.
As for Mrs. j bragging on me to her friends, if I can get what I want, like a new car that I mentioned in a previous post and to have her think it was her idea all along, that is being brilliant enough for me.
I don’t want much. Just what I want, when I want it.

Man, you guys sure do carry a grudge, ‘tyguy’ included.
Like I said before, it’s just talk so far but if the deal on a 2014 is anything like what I heard for the left over 2013, I’ll be getting a pretty good return for my previous aggravation. Now, if Wall Street felt anywhere near as bad for what they did to me, and I didn’t lose all that much before I bailed in the Spring of 2008, I’d be a happy guy indeed. You’d need a chisel to knock the smile off my face. That’s a lot better than a right cross from Mrs. j.

Ha, ha. I prefer to think of it as supporting a friend and having a long memory. You called in a boycott and we listened.
Not that I could really help with a boycott right now as we're likely a couple years away from another purchase.....provided the 150,000-mile van has another 25,000 good miles in it.
All kidding aside, I really do hope you find something you love, Hyundai or not.
My '02 is getting to the point where it needs some work, if I want to keep it, although nothing acute.
Found This.
Has the hard to find v8, and for me a great color combination, but I don't think it has heated seats, which look too good to be the original leather.
In a perfect world it would have a moonroof and towing package.
It kind of looks almost too nice.
Carfax has 27 records and Autocheck has 11.
And the emotorcon just reappered when I needed them! Everybody's a winner today! :shades: :confuse:

You should be able to do some aggressive bargaining on that big of a vehicle with gas prices going back up. Does it run on regular? My 4.6L needs the hi-test which in my area is creeping up on $4 again.

This Explorer is a 3 valve per cylinder design, which only requires RUG.
I have put less than 5k on my current Explorer this year, so I'm not concerned about fuel prices, at this point.
Most of the miles are driven December through March.
Other than that, It's about 1 fill up per month.
I thought the new speedos would be hard, if not impossible, to rig...but apparently not. So trust...but verify.

Do 3rd row seats fold flat (or can they be removed)? Steering wheel is tilt, but no telescoping. Hitch is small one so no heavy hauling has been done. I'd like to see underneath since it comes from CT, but all in all it looks great. Sorry, couldn't help doing my critique without being asked. I like Escape better than Explorer, but that one...you may want to jump on.

I like to towing package because it provides a posi rear end and has the larger receiver. We have a bike rack that fits the larger size.
The 3rd row folds pretty flat and I'm pretty sure there is a telescope lever on the lower left side of the steering column.
I put hitches on the 2 older Escapes, so I could probably swap out that small one.

Everyone has a price and has the potential to buy again. Richard didn't think he would buy another Cadillac and he did. I probably wouldn't buy another Volvo, but I had a rental that I liked quite a bit. Never say never - it depends on lots of factors, price, what's available, reliability, your needs at the time....maybe even color, etc.
I am surprised that your wife actually seems to be encouraging you to buy another car...I think it is a plot....she probably wants some more furniture.

I'll have to check 07's, there are more of those for sale.
There are very few V8's for sale compared to the V6 for any model year.
I can still buy a Ford warranty for a 2006 to cover whatever I feel could be at risk.
After trying to re-glue it, I contemplated throwing a rock at the windshield and letting the glass company put in a new windshield with a nice new mirror mount.

oldfarmer....Old Stegmeire? Never heard of it, but it certainly sounds like cheap swill (and what else do you drink in college?). I had a friend in college who drank Wild Turkey shots and chase it with Little Kings Cream Ale (probably just available locally). He never lasted too long when we went out.
j.....they're offering those R Spec Genesis pretty cheaply around here. They sound like the reincarnation of the old Chevy Impala SS.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure you have mentioned that you have a Chrysler product van of some kind. What is the likelyhood of you getting that beast to 175K while you’re still on this side of the dirt? Son #1 has an ‘08 Town and Country that he bought new to replace his ’02 Grand Caravan. While they did have some problems with the Grand Caravan, the most significant being a tranny that went out at around 70K miles which was covered by warranty, they did like what a van did for them all things considered. That’s why they went for the ’08 T&C. However, he had to have a new engine replaced in it in August 2010 after we returned from one of our family vacations to Myrtle Beach. Sure glad it didn’t let loose while we were on the road.
The curious thing about this is that I did some driving of that van (at least 400 miles round trip) and I didn’t feel a thing wrong with it at all but about a week after we were home my son noticed it acting up so he took it in and the engine was replaced. I don’t think he had 35/40K on it at the time. All I keep hearing from him is, “the main reason I got this T&C is because it came with a lifetime power train warranty to the original owner”.
About a month ago he thought the tranny was acting up (a little over 96K) so he took it to the dealer and they replaced a couple wheel bearings. This was the cause of the sluggish feeling he was noticing and so far so good.
Like I said before they do like the idea of a van for what it does for the family but he is tired of all of the nuisance things that have gone out on it. Too many small items going bad like hinges, windshield wiper motor once , washer motor (3 times) and the 2 power side sliding doors (still not fixed after 4 dealer visits) so he has given up on that altogether (won’t close from the door close switch if it is parked on even the slightest nose down incline, nose up it is OK). He is sure he can fix it if he wanted to spend the time with it but like I said he is living with it. What I just mentioned is not the entire list, I can’t remember all of what he has had trouble with.
The dealer knows of all the nuisance problems and will give him a pretty decent deal on a new one considering all of the problems and inconveniences he has had but he’s pretty sure he doesn’t want to put up with another Chrysler product even though he has read that they have made some pretty good strides lately with their van reliability. Something about a new QA vice president guy that has some authority over the car building process at Chrysler.
Good luck with your goal of getting 175K out of yours.

Plot? Furniture? She has not even let out a wiggle that she wants to replace her dining room set in years now. I think she is turning into a car person. You might even see her on this forum if it keeps up.

I can see why so many families love their minivans but for me/us, the small ute is the way to go. Neighbor's mom has another CR-V and loves it, a bit too big for me and the only reason I didn't even consider one for me, just too damn big and also a bit pricey for the EX and EX-L models I would've wanted. I wanted a nice upper level vehicle this time and got exactly that with the SE edition Tuscon, the middle version for 2014.

Greetings everyone...I am back from my Thanksgiving sojourn.
Speaking of Escape. I had the opportunity to ride around with my daughter in her 2014 Ford Escape Titanium. Since it is a company car she would not allow me to drive it. Nonetheless, it rides more like a car than a traditional SUV. It has a solid feel, narrow panel gaps, and is ergonomically well designed with soft-touch plastic everywhere. The seating surfaces vaguely look like leather but don't feel like leather, although they are supposed to be leather. Additionally, the car is quiet, has a superb sound system, and rides very smoothly. It that case, the CUE moniker is well deserved.
A couple observations though. The Escape Titanium comes with the park assist. And would you know it, my daughter damaged the vehicle the first time she tried to parallel park. $1,800 later she claimed it was (SUA) Sudden unintended acceleration. The truth of the matter her foot was not on the brake pedal during the reverse maneuver.
The second issue is the navigation system. Although the vehicle is equipped with the NAV she said she needs an SD memory card--why? Does anyone know why the NAV would need an SD card or is it something different? Meanwhile, she gets around with her portable Magellan GPS.
All in all the Titanium Escape is a great CUE, but at $34,000 that price is too rich for my blood. I suspect not many of these highly optioned models are sold.

The Ford navigation systems have the map data on an SD card. In my Explorer, it is inside the cubbie in front of the gear lever next to the USB port. Has the dealer not given her the SD card?
When Ford updated my NAV last year, they mailed me a new SD card. I popped it in and was up and running in seconds.

For whoever wanted the details on the Mazda, I got distracted for half a second by my passenger who was trying to figure out why the navigator wasn't talking. When one has a blind left eye even letting it be the eyes looking for a half a second is all it takes. The left front fender, hood and headlight assembly took a pretty good hit but no one was hurt and both cars just drove off. You would not know now looking at it that it had been in an accident.
The new Bosch dishwasher has a third rack for flatware (plus the basket on the lower level)... On the third rack, you can lay them out, just like they are in the china cabinet (big piece of furniture, for you kids)..

My new idea! How about a 4th rack for people who use 24 cups and glasses a day!
Actually, if you are drinking that much might as well just drink it straight from the bottle......or can.

It sounds like you are the perfect candidate for the Sanitize Cycle that now exists on a lot of dishwashers.
Just last night before we left the house Mrs. j yelled down to me from the second floor, as she was doing a wardrobe change, just to go to a store, that if the dishwasher stopped she wanted me to start putting the dishes in the cabinets and when she came down she’d finish up what I didn’t get to. Being the nice guy that I am, I complied. OUCH, those damn dishes were HOT and I mean HOT.
I asked her not do that again (request that I unload the dishwasher and putting the Sanitize Cycle on). I told her no one needs hot dishes like that but you just proved to me that you could use such a feature. I suspect that once they cool off in the cabinet a lot of the airborne germs return but at least you may cut down on the amount.
Before you get another car, get a new dishwasher with the Sanitize Cycle but be sure you’re not conned into doing what I did.

Pretty soon I am going to have to do something about our hot water heater which is beginning to show its age. Going to investigate high efficiency old style and the hot water on demand type and see which kills me more....
Great memory, jmonroe! Yes, the van is a 2003 Grand Caravan AWD, which comes with the 3.8 V6 (not the 3.3), auto leveling rear suspension, tranny cooler, and larger alternator. So far our problems have mostly been related to the AC (under warranty), the trans pressure pump (under warranty), steering rack, front suspension bushings and links/components (numerous replacements), alternator, steel cooling pipe corrosion (all replaced with aluminum), fluid leaks, and frequent brake replacements. There have been a few other small odds and ends as well as 3/4 panel corrosion. I do the mechanical and electrical work myself making the repair costs quite low. Seals and suspension component life have definitely been the frequent weak link.
At this point, if the van's transmission croaked tomorrow, I'd feel okay about the life we've gotten out of it. We have towed with it, after all. We change the trans oil every 30,000 miles and the engine oil every 5,000, both with full synthetic. The AWD has been fantastic in the snow and on the lake launch ramps, and frequently we'll be the only vehicle not spinning tires on a mossy ramp pulling toys out of the water. The utility, low ownership cost, and lack of interesting replacements have caused us to keep it around longer than we anticipated.
I honestly have no idea if it'll make it to 175,000. It's been pampered from a maintenance stand point, but we have used it like a truck.
We're hoping to see a 2015 "something" released, like the new Outback, that gets us excited, wait a year to get through the bugs, and then purchase that "something." I'd love to go full electric right now, but between the towing requirement and the limited electric options out there, that's not going to happen this next purchase.
The mirror is kind of heavy, but it was still holding last time I looked.
In 2013, there were 2 choices for leather seats, partial and full.
For 2014, you can only get partial leather.
My wife's Escape also has park assist, which we have never tried, and after reading about your daughter's unfortunate incident, we never will.
As robr2 mentioned, the NAV uses an SD card, which goes in the center console.
My daughter's 2009 uses DVD technology for the NAV.
Did Ford develop the 3 valve head specifically so it's 4.6L could run on regular? As I recall the 4 valve engine was used in the Cobra Mustang and put out over 300hp. That was at least as much as the 3 valve they switched to in the 2005 GT.
Was it all about octane or is the 3 valve superior in some other respect?
2019 Kia Soul+, 2015 Mustang GT, 2013 Ford F-150, 2000 Chrysler Sebring convertible
The 3 valve is a copy of Mercedes design.
Did a little looking around and the Intech(Lincoln) engine 'recommends' premium.
That is different from 'required'.
You don't happen to the the owner's manual do you?
Thanks both Explorerx4 and rob2. I will pass that info on to my daughter. She will be delighted to know the fix is right under her nose.
