Just received this newsletter from Motor Trend touting 2015 and concept cars of the future. These models caught my eye and maybe yours too:

2015 Honda Hr V -- very attractive SUV

2015 Ashton Martin V8 Vantage Gt Coupe--true automotive nirvana

2015 Acura Tlx V6 -- impressive interior but staid exterior styling

2015 Ford Focus Sedan -- looks upscale

Here is the link to the complete list. Enjoy!

And still no prices for any of the Mustang line-up. I'm getting scared.

On the other hand the article said the first 500 Euro Mustangs pre sold in 30 seconds.

I saw the base prices posted somewhere.

Tomorrow is a big day for my kids. The older one is 3 years out of college, and has been working for a good company for a year.
Has a remote interview with one of the global leaders for a permanent position scheduled for tomorrow.

Our less than 2 weeks ago college grad has an interview with a pretty good company tomorrow.
They flew her a 1000 miles, put her up in a nice hotel, and are taking her out to dinner tonight.
Tomorrow is the on site interview. It doesn't mean she's getting the job.

Keeping fingers and toes crossed for both of them.

Probably no new car for either of them until they pay off their college loans. They only have Staffords, so not a lot of debt, but enough.

Oh, the joy of being a proud parent. Congrats to you and the Millennials.

Speaking of Millenials, this demographic group is expected to do much better than their parents, compared to Generation X who were labeled slackers and the first generation not surpass their parents' standing of living.

"...I saw the base prices posted somewhere..."

Thanks for the heads up explorerx4. Seems they were released on May 20th and I missed it. Base price for a 2014 GT is $31500 and for the 2015 GT $32900. About $1400 more but could be worth it. Of course you can get the current model for $4k+ less than sticker so there's that to consider.

    Here's the full list.

    V6 Base Pricing

    Mustang V6 Fastback (050A): $24,425
    Mustang V6 Fastback (051A): $25,420

    EcoBoost Base Pricing

    Mustang EcoBoost Fastback (100A): $25,995
    Mustang EcoBoost Fastback (200A): $29,995
    Mustang EcoBoost Fastback (201A): $31,790

    GT Base Pricing

    Mustang GT Fastback (300A): $32,925
Mustang GT Premium Fastback (400A): $36,100
Mustang GT Premium Fastback (401A): $38,720
Mustang GT 50 Year Limited Edition (500A): $46,995

Convertible pricing isn't available yet and likely won't arrive until later this summer.

@graphicguy said:LD....thanks for the head's up on Bermuda. I think we'll like it. I've heard it's expensive (avg home price is $800K-$1M?).

Bermuda is expensive, but, beautiful. One of the best things we did was just took the public bus around the island. You can get off at different lodges. There were school kids on the bus, probably about 10 years old, and they had nice uniforms and they were very polite, actually gave their seats to adults and there was no swearing.....I haven't seen that for a long time!

If you take the bus watch the shore and beaches, the scenery is unbelievable and the water is bright blue.

GG, I read about your problems with your Tempo and Celebrity. Will you ever buy another American made car?....just wondered if they could win you back. I think you like new Caddies.

Well, we made it to St Petes and my mid-size car turned out to be Hyundai Elantra. For $15 more a day I could get a real car, like an Impala. For $12 what they consider larger....a Focus.
In the ad it showed a big picture of an Impala and it said we rent Impalas. i thought a mid size would be at least a Malibu. Oh well, it cost less to rent the silly car to get us 40 minutes to our place and back to the airport, than a limo would cost. Now we can drive the Passat which is much nicer. Though, the Elantra is probably a lot of car for the dollar, it's sturdy, nice steering, reasonable power, fairly comfortable.....but just a little too minimal for me. The Passat is a lot more car, and a lot more enjoyable...though it probably costs 25% more.

Explorer....congrats. I'm sure you're rightfully and very proud of your offspring.

Driver....I've had so many issues with GM vehicles over the years, I'm not sure if/when I'll ever consider them. I do like the new Caddys. But, even there, I've outlined how my late Mother's STS was really a large $50K headache.

I will say, that my '06 Tahoe was one of the best vehicles I had ever owned, too.

So, I guess you can say that GM is bi-polar to me.

Ford? Aside from that rolling hunk of junk Tempo, my Ford vehicles have all been good. I used to drag a Mustang. And, I owned one of the last generation Mustang GTs, which was a wonderful car. So, those hold some sentimental interest for me.

I was kind of interested in the Taurus SHO a little while back. And, am still quite interested in the "new" Mustang. If I were in the market for an SUV, the Explorer would probably be something I'd look at carefully.

There's just not much in the Lincoln category that I think I'd be willing to spend money on. Maybe if they were all priced $10K cheaper, but not sure even then.

My Audi experience you all have read about. Mercedes is interesting, but did a brief test of the CLA. Pretty car. Rides like a brick. The new C class, maybe?

If I were in the market right now, at the top of my shopping list would be an Acuar TLX or the BMW M235i. Two very different cars, that will cost about the same.

I've decided I'm not venturing into the $50K+ waters anymore. Rightfully or wrongfully, that number seems to be where the law of diminishing returns resides. There are an awful lot of really good cars in that mid-high $40K range.

    ANOTHER RECALL

Ford is recalling over 1 million vehicles for power steering problems. It seems there is a problem where power steering fails on these vehicles which have caused accidents with injuries, but no deaths reported to date. It seems to affect Explorers and other SUV's. I am not sure if it affects cars - the report I read in the papers this morning was not detailed in term of cars.

Missed you guys. We're at home for a week. My BIL is still holding his own. It took eight 12 hour days but my sister and I cleaned out the clinic and locked the doors for the last time. I haven't worked so hard since I retired. We had to tag all furniture going to the Salvation Army, all medical equipment going to an overseas charity, sort and pack up all medicines going to the hospital, clean out six offices, clean out eight file cabinets, etc. It was truly a monumental task, and a pretty sad one. My wife did a wonderful job taking care of my BIL during the day---taking him to medical appointments, getting him fed, seeing to his medications, and taking him out each day to ride. I must say that it was great to get home for a few days. I'm amazed at what we take for granted in this life. Enjoy your home while you can and, more importantly, enjoy your family while you still have them.

On top of everything else we were going through, we had an automobile accident one of the days that we were there. My sister and I were driving home from the clinic one evening when a Toyota Corolla plowed into the back of her Honda Pilot. The entire front end of the Corolla was demolished but my sister's Pilot only suffered a loose bumper and one taillight broken. You'll find this interesting. The lady driving the Toyota complained that she applied her brakes early but that the car just wanted to keep going. Acceleration problem again? When her husband arrived at the scene, he and I were amazed that the air bag didn't deploy. After all, the front end of the car was laying on the ground. No Toyota for me!

    To be continued----

So good to hear from you, Richard. I can't believe the air-bags didn't deploy with that much damage. If she applied the brakes early and the car kept going, it could also be the brakes - or it is possible her foot hit both the brakes and the accelerator at the same time. Then again, who knows if she was telling the truth to begin with. Maybe she was "texting" or on the phone with someone. Today, you never know!

Keep well and update us when you can.

Good news that your BIL is stable.

On the crash, it may not have been UA involved.

Yesterday while waiting to pull up to some gas pumps I noticed the Lincoln really revving up. It took a minute to realize that while pushing down on the brake I was also pushing down on the edge of the gas pedal. Didn't even notice because the gas and brake were even with each other. Wonder if that doesn't explain some of those crashes.

Second, on the air bag. Many times a car that has been in an accident doesn't have a deployed air bag replace due to cost or fraud. The car gets sold and the new owner finds out about the missing bag the hard way.

It's not jut the airbag. Same thing is with seatbelts. Every time I mention that a seatbelt that was used in an accident should be replaced, I get a blank stare. Most people have no idea that those self-locking inertia mechanisms are one-time use and the damage is too much for the to be reused. The belt itself may be ok, just not the mechanisms. When I get to a car that has belts constantly locking, I get nervous, because most likely they have damaged belts. :(

Welcome back and I am sure all your work for your B-I-L will be greatly appreciated.

A big problem could be the bumper on the Pilot is probably a lot higher than the grill of the Toyota. It's unfortunate, truck bumpers don't have to match up with car bumpers.

Glad there weren't any serious injuries.........anxiously waiting for the rest of the story.

Interesting theory and I think you could have a point. How much better can a car get and after a certain point how much car does one need?

My recent college grad obtained 2 degrees, History and Political Science.
Those majors came as a shock to me, as she scored 800 on her Math SAT and 5's in her Calculus and Physics AP exams.
I really thought she should have gone towards engineering.
My wife told me to stay out of her way, she's always done well, so that's what I've done, other than try to provide positive support.
Law School was the goal for her until recently, so those majors make sense for that.

graphicguy and Driver, I am not an economist (but I play one on TV :p ) nonetheless I believe you messed up your economic jargon. I think the economic theory is "the law of diminishing marginal utility." Semantics yes, but I think it is more than a distinction without a difference.

My 27 year old daughter spent 3 years in Africa in the Peace Corps teaching English and Math. When she came home, she and 3 Peace Corps friends decided to go to the hipster capital of the world: Brooklyn, NY. I guess after living in a mud hut for 3 years it seemed like the next step?!? She landed a job as an administrative assistant at a non-profit for homeless and loves the work (and NYC). 2 years later she has decided to go back to grad school for an MSW. It's her choice and maybe she will never get rich, but she seems to have a passion. She thinks that she can swing the whole tab with Stafford loans since she can work while going to school. We are proud (and a little worried  )

Speaking of work life, as of today I am officially retired! 32 years with the Province (i.e. state) of Nova Scotia. Bit of a strange experience these last few weeks after I set my retirement date - I call it the long goodbye. Had to stretch it out a bit longer than I wanted to allow my replacement to overlap me for a couple of weeks. Got a bunch of lunches, dinners, etc. over that time, nice but not necessary. Would prefer to have departed more quickly in retrospect - you feel a bit like the walking dead as people start bypassing you, stop asking you things and generally learning to live without you. But all in all I have no regrets, and hope to adjust to a new life now. It will be nice not having to get up early every day, and to choose to do what I want to do.

Welcome to the world of your "golden age" years. As I am sure you will discover, the world goes on as if you never existed. But your contributions will be remembered by those you served and helped.

Even though I never hear from the hundreds (probably thousands) of former students that acquired all the skills they needed to compete in the world as a result of how managed classrooms as well as the schools I administered, I know what I did and have nothing but a sense is accomplishment as a result.

I wish I could say the same thing about my stint as a car salesman and manager at a dealership, but that 'a business!

speaking of kids and jobs, my son found out today that he got the job he interviewed for yesterday. Quick response, always nice to cut down the anxiety! So somewhere in the next 3-5 weeks (they weren't sure of a start date) he will be moving out, since the job is about 4 hours away. Suddenly, no longer living the good life in our house. Real world expenses about to hit.

Old Farmer, he will be coming your way. He will be working in Albany (actually on the U of A campus, someplace on Fuller road). he does need a place to live. Maybe he can rent a hayloft or henhouse from you? maybe sleep in the hooptie?

thankfully this is a job in his engineering field, so he is finally going to be able to use his degree.

Congratualations on your retirement. I hope it goes well for you, but, it could be more difficult than it looks. Hopefully, you have a hobby or pastime to keep you busy most days. You are in a new situation, your identity and more important your schedule is gone.

There is hope....it gets better. I thought I would always want to work, and never retire. It took awhile, but now my days and weeks are full and I am so glad I am not in the rat race. I would be useless as an employee, lost all ambition. I would never hire me.

You and BWAI are too kind. I did nothing more than any family member would do---just tried to help out where I could. I'm just thankful that I could have the stamina and energy to get the work done. My sister is five years older than I am and she kept the 12 hour a day pace right along with me. My family was far from perfect but each of my parents had a strong work ethic. I think that it was passed down to us by good example.

Lots of good theories on why the Corolla blasted us in the rear. I suppose that we'll never know the actual cause. I do remember the police saying that the skid marks were 50+ feet long before impact. I believe it because we could certainly hear her coming. Dino made a good point. I never thought about owning a car where the air bags had deployed during a previous owner's tenure. I guess that a routine inspection wouldn't show that.

I finally read the 384 posts that I missed. It took a bit but I read fairly quickly. I really enjoyed all of those posts about GM. Someone should put them all together and write an interesting article for a car publication. Better yet, an article for the AP wire so that it would be in all of the major newspapers. You got back into politics for a short time, but you managed to return to car topics pretty quickly. The only blatant error that I observed was from Ken. He needs to use a capital "C" when referring to Christmas.

Speaking of which, I was perusing Craigslist and remembered mako1a's comment about not wanting to spend more than $100 for a CL car. Here's one from a scammer who regularly posts seemingly unbelievable good deals on car that don't exist. Usually accompanied by pictures of palm trees in winter.

With this one he seems to have gotten his scams mixed up. Notice the plate isn't even from NY.

That's great! From what you say it sounds like Albany Nano Tech. That's one of the few places that are hiring in upstate thanks to substantial infusions of public money. Good choice of degree, engineering is always in demand.

The barn is pretty full but the hooptie van is empty six days a week if he needs a place to flop.

Seriously, if he's looking for a place to live there are some nice apartments in Guilderland a few miles from Fuller road down rt. 20. If he's not "street wise" I'd stay out of Albany.

Did you read about the word "Is it dilemma or dilemna"?

Did you know 1 in 10 believes the word is "dilemna"?

Both spellings should be correct, so many people were taught in school the word was dilemma. One thought is it was spelled incorrectly in a school text book at one time and the whole thing somehow made it around the world. I am one who definitely was taught in school to spell dilemma "D-I-L-E-M-N-A".

Makes for interesting dinner conversation......if you don't mind talking about language.

I have never seen "dilemma" spelled "dilemna" in the 69 years I have lived. Is it a "Canadian" spelling? Must be!

I'm in Canada and I have never seen it that way.

I remember when I was in elementary school the spelling that always got me was "vacuum". I always thought it was supposed to be "vacumn". And to this day I struggle with "separate", wanting to spell it as "seperate".

Congratulations; I'm 3-4 months away from full retirement- although it looks like they still will want to use me on a day to day basis because there is a continuing need to cover for judges due to illness, disqualifications, etc. If the per diem rate is decent I'll probably work 5-10 days per month to fund my car/bike addiction and to stash a bit into savings...

    No, it is not a Canadian or U.S. thing...it is a worldwide thing. I am not completely crazy either, here is a brief bit of one article, and you can read the rest with the link;

It's a real DILEMNA! How should I spell it?
aargh Are you one of possibly millions* worldwide that have always spelled the word with an 'n' as DilemNa and have been shocked to find that you are absolutely and categorically 'wrong' because the word has apparently always been spelled with a double 'm' as 'Dilemma'....?

It is a truly weird discovery for all us DilemNa spellers and although it might seem an over the top thing to say, I find that many report the discovery as making them feel a bit shaken. They've grown up knowing that it is spelled with an 'n' and to see it written with 2 m's just looks absolutely wrong!
Usually the discovery is quite by chance, for example a spellchecker 'correcting' you. So firstly you check the internet fully expecting to find the correct N spelling... No? Hmmm, that's a bit strange... so then you start thinking that perhaps it's a fairly recent Americanised version of the English and so you check an Oxford English Dictionary... No? Hmmm, that's a bit strange... it's still saying 2 Ms. Ok, so let's get an old dictionary from the 50s/60s/70s and that will surely show the correct N spelling?!
    OMG, no it doesn't.....
Well, it turns out the word has never ever been spelled with an N at any point in history!
Not only that, but there's never ever been a dictionary that even offers the possibility of an N spelling!
    dilemna info

Best explanation and only one that works is that 2 universes collided, and some "mn" people got caught in the "mm" universe.

Just substitute the word "quagmire"...or deep kimshee or puddle of doo doo or consult your thesaurus.

To be politically correct we can no longer use the N word. Not a very good explanation but I gave it a shot anyway.

Speaking of spelling and pronunciation issues - I am watching the White Sox game right now and was reminded of a thing my older brother always does which drives me nuts. He pronounces the name "Chicago" as "chi-CAR-go". Is this a Canadian thing or more common?

We all used to pronounce it Chicago until driver told us it was Chicargo. Now we all say Chicargo. It has become a real dilemna. Or is that dilenema?

It would appear that *driver is causing an international dilemma for linguists everywhere. Chicago was always "chi-ka-go", even when I lived in NYC, but especially when I lived in Chicago. Dilemma was always "di-lem-ma" no matter where I lived.

I think *driver is becoming the "gremlin" of linguistics - anything to "drive" us nuts!

Yes, I did see your post on the word "dilemma" and had planned to respond after doing a little research. I have a dozen or so old dictionaries dating from the 1930s through the 1980s. I checked each of those and found no alternative spellings for the word "dilemma". I was surprised to discover on the web that many people had been taught differently. I never ran into that problem as an English teacher. My only problem was with the definition of the word. My students didn't seem to understand that the word "dilemma" was a proposition with two unfavorable choices. They wanted to use the word as a substitute for the word "problem" which may or may not have a satisfactory solution. Finally, I asked them if they had ever been between a rock and a hard place. Bingo. The light came on and they seemed to grasp the difference.

Returning to your discovery, it is odd that one person in ten would spell the word differently. I found three or four possible theories and, regardless of what you believe, it does make for an interesting topic of conversation. Thanks for sharing the discovery.

"...anxiously awaiting the rest of the story."

I only had one additional thing to share from our trip. While I was working at the clinic one morning, my wife called. She had run to the drug store to pick up some medicine for my BIL She said that the AC on the SRX was only blowing hot air. I gave her directions to the Cadillac dealer and told her to get it checked out. She called back later to report that the dealership had repaired the problem. I didn't think to ask her how much the bill was until my sister and I got home that evening. When my wife handed me the bill, I nearly fell over. To "add freon and recharge the system" it was $159! If you guys think that I'm off base here, please say so. To me, it was highway robbery. Being so involved with getting the clinic cleaned out and facing a deadline for the new physician coming in, I just put the bill in my briefcase and went on my way.

I'm also a bit miffed with my Cadillac dealer here. His service department is suppose to take care of the SRX. I had just had it checked out before the trip. If it was low on freon, they should have added some. I intend to speak with the service manager about this.

    Richard
