He gets a very serious look on his face and says Racism.

What?! For not selling something for half of what it's worth. People need to get a grip and take responsibility for their actions. And no, I do not belive it is the resposibility of sales people to be someone's financial planner. They should try to match a vehicle to their needs and be open about the costs and payments, financing charges etc. How far do we extend this in retail, to the guys selling big screen TVs, home improvement projects, how about those thousand dollar handbags and scarves? Should these retail people check their finances and advise them against buying?

This gives me a good idea? I'm off to buy a used Taurus from Hertz on credit. I'll then go to get the Mercedes guy to match my payments and put me into a S550. Human rights violation if he doesn't

P.S. I didn't know you were such a sensitive guy, all trained and such...

I don't see it as a salesperson only, or stories from salespersons only forum.

Nor do we. All are welcome as long as they stay reasonably close to topic and aren't here to bash either customers or sales reps.

He then starts telling me that you don't have to be rich to have a nice lifestyle in this country

Sounds like the mating call of the slowly going bankrupt snob. I bet he doesn't have the best credit rating.

He tells me that the car only cost him $25,000 and that he took out a 7 year loan and pays $400 per month and people think he is rich because he drives a Porsche.

Lets see that comes out to just under 9% interest rate, not to good if IIRC. As for me I would rather save that $400/month and take the wife on a real nice vacation once a year. FWIW I think he over paid for that car, but who cares if he spends his retirement as a greeter at Wally world right now people think he has money.

I used to sell Real Estate and have sent a few people away.
They would insist on extending beyond there means or want to buy a house with synthetic stucco and I would refer them to someone else. I like to sleep well at night. Some appecited it,others took offense.

Our real estate agent walked us through the pre-approval process and ultimately actually helped us get a very competitive mortgage. The thing that was odd to me was the amount they approved. It was almost 2x what we had figured we could safely do for a house payment (and this was the loan officer, using factual information I provided). It took a while after we got pre-approved to talk the real estate agent down to houses in our budget (which was funny because she was showing houses below our budget prior to that pre-approval). Even now, the payment gets tight sometimes, but heck 36 down, only 324 more to go  .

You have to watch those loan officers. ;)

After we selected the builder and house we wanted to have built back in the early 90’s when we moved to South Carolina the next step was to apply for a loan. It just so happened that the bank the builder recommended was the same bank we had for the house we just sold in western PA and they had the best construction loan and interest rates, so that’s where we went.

The very attractive youngest woman (I had to say this because she was) says since you’ve been with us before, it shouldn’t take long to get an approval and I will be getting back to you within a day. Calls back the next day all bubbly saying you’re approved (which I already knew would be the case) and says I have even greater news for you. Before I had a chance to ask what it was she said you and Mrs. jmonroe can get back with your builder and select a bigger house because you can afford a lot more than the one you’re planning to build. I said I know that but there are only two of us now (one son had just graduated college and the other son was still in college) and I felt a 3200+ sq. ft. house was already way more than we needed and we weren’t interested in anything larger.

She proceeds to say that I should not think small but should consider the resale value of a larger house when I sell (we had told her we only planned on staying there about 6/7 years) because when you have a larger house you’re talking to a completely different group of people who aren’t afraid to spend whatever you’re going to ask, within reason, when you plan to sell. :surprise: However, we stuck to our guns and built the small house. :(

Don’t you just love it when others decide how you should live, once they have access to some of your personal financial information?

Just to stay a little on topic here, I once had a car salesman say something very similar after he ran a credit report on me back in the mid 70’s (or whatever they were called back then). I didn’t buy from him because once he had that credit report info, he kept trying to push me 2 models up from what I wanted.

Yeah the front and front quarter views are fine it is the full back view and sometimes profile that people have a problem with.

The mid-cycle refresh is supposed to sculpt the back end a little differently.

Thats amazing even with the numbers out in front of them they still couldnt understand why they couldnt get into a Range Rover without more cash down? they should've been better prepared to purchase.

This should be posted in a different forum, but I'd like to hear the opinion of the pros. Imagine that you became filthy rich and moved into a new house with a big four-car garage. The garage is empty and it's your job to fill it with cars. Cost is no object - so what would you pick?

Here is my list of four in order of importance.

For taking out the dogs: Hummer H3 Alpha
    For a cross-country trip: Mercedes S class
For a quick trip to the bank to visit your money: Volkswagen GTI
For the Sunday drive to the car wash: any Ferrari will do

We always had Hondas and Toyotas and we have been very pleased with them, but somehow I can't see any Japanese cars in the millionaire's garage. Now it's your turn, let's see if British Rover can come up with a better list than mine.

that doing the right thing isn't easy and there can be pitfalls that extend beyond loosing a sale.

that BR is notably willing to participate in that dialog, which is uncommon, but again, appreciated.

that a customer would be stupid enough to play the race card with corporate when there's hard objective information to the contrary.

that the store manager backed everyone up.

that the people in the store probably learned something.

I wonder if mac will provide any previews of upcoming stories before the main event? I guess we'll know soon enough, especially if he starts off with "Coming Soon to a Discussion Group Near You..."

Actually, I really don't mind the previews. They can sometimes be entertaining. It's all those Toyota advertisements prior to the previews that get annoying! :P

And now the series finale of "Treat them like they are your next of kin" Tonight's episode: "Now that you've gone"

    Announcer's voiceover:
"Last week our hero Mackabee had just sat down at the negotiating table with Gina and the Johnson's. Gina believed they were not giving her enough for her parent's trade." (fade to the showroom)

"So let me get this straight Gina. You believe we're not giving you enough for your parent's trade. Is that correct?" asks Mackabee. "That's correct." replies Gina. "And what do you base your thinking on?" asks Mack. Gina opens her folder and begins leafing through a bunch of printouts from KBB  and Edmunds.com :) "We looked up our trade on the internet and according to these websites you are way off on your offer." she says. I look at the print outs and both websites are within a couple of hundred dollars and she of course picked the values that would benefit them. I was always taught never to "insult" the customers trade-ins no matter how bad a shape they were in. I gathered my thoughts and said: "Well Gina, I talked with our sales manager and they upped the appraisal to $1500.00" I show her an F2 screen (printout with price, trade, cash down, rebates, etc..) "Nope, that's not good enough. We want at least $2100.00 for it." she says. I look at both printouts again and they are around $2100.00 to $2500.00 "Gina, I'm going to be straight up with you. The trade has no retail value to us. We are going to wholesale it and hope we get what we offer you for it." I tell her. "That's your business not ours." she says. "Ok, may I ask you a couple of things?" I ask. "Sure. What are you thinking?" she replies. "Are you ok with the price of the van?" I ask. "Yes." she replies. "Ok, so if I can get you another $300.00 for the trade, do we have a deal?" I ask wanting to put this baby to bed. The deal I mean not Gina. ;) I'm meeting them in the middle and we are already down to nothing on the deal. I'm working really hard on a mini and don't want to lose it now! "I think that's fair. You give us $300.00 more for the Exploder and we got a deal." she says. So I get up and walk outside to talk to the UCM who is looking at their trade and says "It looks like they cleaned it somewhat. It looks better than the other day." So I say, "Can you give me another 3 bucks for it? I need it to make this deal." He says; "New car or used car?" I reply "It's on a new car."..."Ok." he says. So now our ACV is a grand total of $1100.00
I walk back in and say to Gina and the Johnsons: "Looks like we got a deal.!" They all relax and Mrs. Johnson says. "Well thank God. I was getting tired of all this car shopping." I excuse myself to grab a deal folder and begin putting the paperwork together. I go back into the sales office and tell Jason to print me another F2 screen showing $1800.00 for the trade in. "UCM gave you another $300.00 bucks??" he looks at me with a confused look on his face. "Yep." I respond. "Hey, UCM! You gave Mack another 300 on the trade?" he asks the UCM. "Yeah, that's what you told me to do." he responds. Jason looks at me and says. "You didn't show them the F2 screen did you." not wanting to hear my answer. "Why. I wasn't supposed to?" I ask. "No. That includes the 300 bucks already." he says. "Oh great! So now you just put my butt on a sling." I say. "I asked them if I could get another $300.00 if we could wrap up the deal and they said yes." I pause, "now I got to go back out and tell them otherwise."
So I go back to the table and sit down. "Folks I have to apologize to you." I begin, "the 300 dollars were already included in the sheet I showed you. I was not supposed to show it to you until after the UCM looked at your trade in." I continue. "so, it's only $1500.00 for the trade." Gina looks at me with indignation in her eyes and says: "You owe us $300.00 dollars."
"I don't have $300.00 dollars to give you." I respond thinking I have a fire about to start. "Well we want $300.00 more for the trade and we are not leaving until you give it to us." she says. "I don't have $300.00 dollars to give you!" I exclaim and stand up and walk back into the sales office. "Jason, you better send someone out there to talk to Gina. She is pissed at me big time and wants me to give them $300.00" I tell him. UCM looks over at Jason and says; "You better go man, you can't leave your salesman out to dry like that. It's not his fault." So Jason says "I don't want to go out there, just go out there and give them the $300.00 bucks." He prints out another F2 with the additional $300 for the trade-in.
I head back to the table and only Mr. and Mrs. Johnson are sitting by themselves. "Where's Gina?" I ask. "She's outside on the cell phone. She'll be right back." says Mr. Johnson. "What does she do for a living?" I ask them. "She's self employed." says Mr. Johnson "No one will put up with her so they won't hire her." he continues.
Gina comes back in and I say to her. "I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, here's the new worksheet with the $1800.00 for the trade." She looks it over and another grilling session starts.
"What are all these numbers here?" she asks. So I break it down line by line and get the the out the door price and say. "This is what you should focus on."
"What's the tax rate for Virginia?" she asks. So I tell her it's 3% percent, plus your processing fee, title, registration, and sales tax. She pulls out a calculator from her purse and begins doing some numbers. "These figures don't add up to that." she says. "I want you to give me a print out like the first one you gave my mother." So I stand up, take a deep breath and say: "I'll be right back." I go back into the sales office and tell Jason to give me another printout not an F2 but the one we use to work the deals with. He prints it out and I go back to show it to Gina. She looks it over and goes back to her calculator and says "They still don't match." and continues "When I do 3% percent of this and add that and multiply this it should come out to that and it doesn't." I'm beginning to lose my cool and it starts to show. I stand up again and take another deep breath. "I'll be right back." I say.
I walk over to the business office and I find an F$I manager that's not busy. "Hey Larry, do me a favor man. I have these customers that want every penny accounted for. Can you print me out a buyer's order?" I ask. "Sure." he says. I give him the deal worksheet and he tells me "This things are just in the ballpark." and continues "they are off by about $10 bucks. The software just prints them out that way." he pulls the deal up on his computer and feeds a form through his printer and prints it out. As I head back to the table Jason is about to sit down with Gina and the Johnson's. Apparently Larry called him to let him know I was coming back with a buyer's order and Jason just wanted to calm them down. When I get there Jason tells me to get the vehicle ready and

We apologize for the end of the story being cut off. We are experiencing technical difficulties. Please stand by.

    Announcer's voiceover:
"We now continue with the conclusion of "Treat them like they are your kids. I mean kin"

As I approach the table Jason leaves and I begin putting my paperwork together I tell them our delivery coordinator (rust and dust, mop and glo girl) will be coming over to go over some products that may enhance the appearance and longevity of their vehicle. "It should only be 15-20 minutes." I tell them.
Mr. Johnson having been through all this before says. "I hope she's pretty."
I get up and leave to get the van ready and drive it back to the prep department. I then go to the delivery coordinators office and give them a copy of the worksheet. "It's an older couple and their daughter is the second baseman. " I tell them. Susy tells me she'll be there in a minute. I walk outside to get some fresh air and clear my head. :shades:
About 20 minutes later I go back in and see Susy is still at the table but the Johnson's are outside arguing. Suzy is with Gina and trying real hard to convince her its a good thing what she's selling/ ;)
I walk out to the Johnsons and Mrs. J. asks me the following: "Mackabee, what do you think about this stuff this girl is trying to sell us?" I put my hand over my mouth and in a low voice I whisper "Mrs. J. let me tell you a secret. However, this is between you and me because if it gets out I told you I could lose my job." I now have her attention and say: "Every vehicle sold in the US of A is undercoated at the factory. If you want to get the paint and fabric protection that's up to you." I tell her. "She should get the fabric protection." says Mr. J. "You saw the inside of the vehicle she's trading." he continues. So they head back in and I go check on their vehicle. I come back and Suzy is done with them and tells me what a #@%&^ the daughter was. "Hey, she's just looking out for her folks. You'd probably do the same."
When I get back to the showroom, the table is empty. They are in F$I. There's a light at the end of the tunnel. :shades:
By the time they come out the vehicle is ready and I have it in the delivery area. I put the plates on and start going over all the features with them.
The next day me, Mrs. Johnson and Mr. Johnson are sitting at the Silver Diner. I order some onion rings and look at my watch. "Where's Gina?" I ask. "She must be parking the van." says Mrs. Johnson. "She's driven the van more than we have." says Mr. Johnson. On my left there's an old style juke box and I start leafing through the songs. I put a quarter in the machine and select J6. "Don't stop believing" by Journey begins to play. The waitress brings the onion rings over as a shady looking man gets up, looks at me and goes into the men's restroom. I go back to the onion rings when I hear the bell on the door ring and as I look up....

    JUST KIDDING!!!

After I'm satisfied the Johnsons are ok with their vehicle I go outside to find Gina. She's sitting on a rock outside talking on the phone. "Your parents are ready" I tell her. She walks into the delivery area and sits in the middle row seat by the door. "I'm sorry I lost my cool in there." I tell her. "You lost your cool? I don't remember you loosing your cool." she says smiling. "Thank you for taking care of my parents" :shades:
They drive off into the sunset as I wave goodbye.

Many years ago, I had a job delivering pizzas. One of the regulars was an elderly lady. She would always tip me a whole $.25. (a quarter)

I always enjoyed dealing with this lady because she was so sweet and it always made my day if I dealt with her. Most of the other folks I worked with would avoid her because of the guaranteed "mini".

Anyway, in an attempt to be on topic, I wonder if any of you sales people have regular folks you enjoy selling to, even if you don't really make any money off them?
  • epineyepiney Member Posts: 462
Good to see the Johnson's got their van. Can't help but think that the learnings from the story, other than you went out your way for these folks, is that a good cop, bad cop routine and grinding it down ends up saving several hundred for the buyers. Have the nice guys invest time so that the sales guy has so much invested in the deal that he wants to close it and then bring in big bad Gina to grind out the last few hundred. :confuse:
  • user777user777 Member Posts: 3,341
dang, i thought you were gonna finish with something like after many years of delivering pizzas to earn your way through school, getting .25 tips from this lady, one day you get a letter in the mail from the executor of the lady's estate, informing you to appear at a meeting.

there you learn you've been willed a mint-condition Model T. :surprise:

That's what myself, pch101 and socala4 have always said. Time investment used properly, by the buyer, is a good strategy in negotiating a better deal. Though most here disagree with this theory, we are given examples of it working time and time again.

way back in 1948, when I was a junior in high school, I was living with my Dad (who was a service manager at a local Lincoln Mercury dealership). Since neither of us cooked and he always worked late, he would give me 60 cents every day for my supper at the corner diner. A hot roast beef sandwich and mashed potatoes was fifty cents and the ten cents left over was the waitress' tip.
The minute I would walk into the diner, the waitress would always say, "Yeah, I know, hot roast beef sandwich and mashed potatoes"! That same combo today would probably cost me seven dollars and a two dollar tip.
I took peanut butter and jelly for lunch (so I did some "cooking".

This would have been a quick and easy deal if there were no trade involved. I've resigned myself to these type of deals and just hope they spend money in the back and move on to the next one. In this case they bought the mop and glo and financed with us. I'm selling more used cars now then I did before otherwise I wouldn't survive off of new car sales alone since we blow new cars out in a minute. :)

I usually don't laugh at much in this topic.

I was away for a couple of days at the air show in Wichita. And, nothing crashed in a ball of flame at the show, so that was a success.

I had several screens of 'catch up' messages in here.

    And I founds some laughs.
-'And all of us had to take sensitivity training again'!
-Mr. Johnson said 'Is she pretty.'
-The 'a shady looking character came in and went into to bathroom' paragraph.

We live in a world that people live beyond there (correction: their) means. Thats what keeps the economy rolling.

You bet. Not only people, but businesses too, and so does the government. They are all living with the hope that sooner than later their plans or should I say dreams will turn to reality.

when I bought my 2003Mazda6, I got 0% if I financed through Mazda American credit, and also $1100 cash back. But $1500 cash back if I paid cash. Go figure.

"... 0%...and $1100 cash back. But $1500 if I paid cash. Go figure..."

I guess Mazda figured the 0% was worth $400. Either way that's a great incentive. Did you run it through one of those calculators that tells you which is the better deal, low interest or cash back?

This was a very good tale but I guess I’ll never understand your biz. :(

I'm meeting them in the middle and we are already down to nothing on the deal. I'm working really hard on a mini and don't want to lose it now!

"Yeah, that's what you told me to do."

    This is the first $300.

"I don't have $300.00 dollars to give you."

So Jason says "I don't want to go out there, just go out there and give them the $300.00 bucks." He prints out another F2 with the additional $300 for the trade-in.

And this is the second $300, :surprise:

That’s $600 because Gina showed up. In the beginning like you said above you were “down to nothing …working on a mini”. If $600 + is a mini (before Gina messed up the deal), if I may be so noisy, what do you guys call $200 or less which is what most of us posters have come to think a mini is. In my opinion $600 + is a lot more than a mini for the typical family ride, be it SUV or family sedan. Upscale machines…that’s a different story.

Most of us come here thinking we know something about car buying and like getting an insiders view from you guys in the biz, then we hear this stuff.

I don’t begrudge you guys making money (I darn sure didn’t work for nothing) but c’mon let’s call a spade a spade.

Well yeah... but it sure the heck ain't ethical. :surprise:

Tideser's Fan Club won't reach the popularity of Paris Hilton's, but with my promotional skills he has been gaining on Gary Coleman.

I did check out your blog though tidester. Curious as to why you are depicted driving a go-cart on a snowy mountain road, in the dead of night. Hosting Smart Shoppers can't be that stressful can it? :)

    That's a forgery!! :(

As soon as I hang up here I'm calling my attorney brother in-law or my friend Vinny who specializes in knee cap work. All depends on how quickly I cool down.
