Unless he comes in here and tries to tell me the Accord is superior to the Camry we'll get along fine.

You know you won't get anywhere with the original about that.

However, you're getting the next best thing...a shot at the 'newbie'.

We're waiting and don't give us a post the size of Australia. :)

I knew they were going to drive a hard bargain so I emailed them the edmunds info and went up in my offer matching the TMV which amounted to about $500 over invoice with the $750 rebate included.

Why did you up your offer? They're the ones that should want to sell a gas guzzling SUV.

    What am I doing wrong?

Almost everything. Find a dealer that wants to sell a vehicle and stop begging this guy to sell you something.

Why would you think you are doing anything wrong when it's the dealer who has proven to be untrustworthy? Be happy to have learned so before buying and take your business elsewhere.

As far as the Edmunds' numbers relative to Toyotas - they're simply not accurate due to their exclusion of regional advertising (and, perhaps, other) fees.

Back in the old days Craig and I used to duke it out all the time. We began posting in 1997 and became friends after a few "battles" of Camry vs Accord superiority encounters. When I got sick in 2004 I received a "get well/Christmas" card that was signed by Isell, Pat, Kirstie, KCram, and a few other posters and hosts. I was moved to tears and it's something that I will never forget. Everyone here is great! Once in a while we will get some knuckleheads that stir the pot but that's ok too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for replying quickly to marcogallo. At first, I thought that it was a sham. When I realized that it was actually a real post, I thought that I would have to dial 911. I wish him well, but I am so relieved that he wanted the conversation moved to email. It has to be the worst post in the history of Edmunds.

    I haven't seen a Versa sedan.

Ya know what's funny???? I haven't seen one in a while either... about a month.

Nobody is looking for them. Nissan puts out a better incentive on the hatchback to boot.

If someone is looking for one I very simply switch them to a sentra. The Sentra has a higher MSRP and with all the incentives on the Sentra you can almost get them for the same price. It's a no brainer.

Now I am getting ready to watch the politcal thriller... "Lions for Lambs"

staring Tom Cruise... Rober Redford.... and i believe Meryl Streep

I started watching it a few months ago but I was bored to tears and stopped 15 minutes into the movie. I still have it in my computer and I'll finish it someday. Let me know how you like it.
A couple of movies you'll really enjoy are "No country for old men". No, it's not about Richard or Oldfarmer. ;) Javier Bardem, a Spanish actor that has done many American movies won best supporting actor in the Oscars. He did a heck of a job portraying a psychotic hitman.

The other is "There will be blood" which is also an excellent movie. Richard Day Lewis got an Oscar for his performance. I couldn't tell it was him until I looked at the credits!

    What am I doing wrong?

First of all, you are trying to buy a Toyota in TX. From what I have read here on Edmunds, Toyota is distributed by a single company in your region and they pack every Toyota with stupid junk fees and “options”. In addition, Edmunds invoice is lower than the real invoice because it doesn’t contain some of the regional fees such as advertizing. Carsdirect..com does include regional fees, however, I compared a real invoice published on fitzmall.com to carsdirect.com, and carsdirect was about $300 higher. Therefore, carsdirect is not the best resource either.

Another problem is that your original first offer of $750 over invoice was simply too high. I think that the salesman misread you for an ignorant laydown and is trying to squeeze you for all you’ve got.

If you live in a densely populated area with many Toyota dealers, you can try emailing them a request for quote and see what happens. Make sure your email specifies interior and exterior colors and all the options, and ask for an itemized Out the Door Quote.

If that doesn’t work, see if fitzmall.com or carmax.com will ship one for you.

Do you like Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez? You might want to check out Quentin's "Death Proof".

Kurt Russell is in it and he plays a psycho race car driver stunt man who likes to play "chicken" with other drivers. Michelle Gonzales (I think that's her name, she was on "The fast and the furious" flick. She does a dance in a small Texas bar that is worth the price of admission. There is no nudity but lots of teasing and gory violence.

The other movie by Rodriguez is "Grindhouse" I think the dvd has both movies. This one is also darn good.

The whole concept behind these two movies is going back to the days of drive in movies where they would show double features. Some of the movie effects make you believe you're at the drive in. You're probably too young to remember but those were fun days.! We would get a carload of people and put a couple in the trunk and would go see a double header for a couple of bucks. It was also a good place to neck with your date.
    Ahh the good old days.

It has been making a comeback up here though. there is one about 50 miles away that we can go to. My wife is always asking....

I'm at the end of my lease with my BMW-325i with two payments remaining....I drove my car to the dealer and was up front with him. Told him what I wanted and asked that he drive my car and give me and estimate. He did and offered $23,000

Why and how do you trade-in a car that is leased???

We are having a great go of it. Selling Fusions and Focus's hand over fist, if we had a field full of Hydrid Escapes we could sell them and we have sold all but one Flex before they came off the truck.

F150 sales have picked up to.

The fact we opened our brand new store Monday probaly isn't hurting though :D

It's been slow here also. I would kill to have about 10 or 20 Civic Sedans to sell. I know this seems politically incorrect or boorish or somehow in bad taste but I will say it anyway. It is so enjoyable to me to have a product that I dont have to and wont discount. It seems like all year I give and give away dealer profit and right now I have the hottest product in the country which is in very high demand and very low supply. Peoples reactions are incredible when I tell them that I am not discounting civics. Dont get me wrong if there were a larger supply I would be able to offer a discount. We received 4 sedans last Monday and they were all gone by the weekend and sold at MSRP.
Its a refreshing change from being a give away artist which I normally am with new cars.
Having said all of these terrible ( profit is not a dirty word) things, I am on pace for career record sales. I have been in the bizz for 11 years and the last 9 at this location.

Funny you should say that. We had a 5K ADM on S-2000's when they first came out in 99. We were under the belief that they would be a one year production run and thus become very valuable in a short period of time. Thats what we relayed to our customers. Man oh man when we found out that it was going to be a regular production car, you should have seen/heard the uproar! After that our GSM said no more ADM's. I think he was tired of the death threats!
  • dino001dino001 Member Posts: 6,191
Having a good mileage car is a good thing - but the financial gain ends when Fits and now apparently Civics (and other sippers) get ADM/junk options slapped on them. If you drive 15K/year and buy 30 mpg car instead of 25 mpg car, it saves you $400/year at $4/gallon. So better equipped decent 4-cyl. midsize (import or domestic) at a good discount is way better deal than a Civic at sticker plus customary South Florida $600 fee and supervalue paint sealant/fabric protector for another $500 (or worse - a friend saw Fits with some $2000 dealer "customer donation" packages).

People run histerically from wall to wall. Before they "had to have" seven-passenger Suburbans to accommodate once-a-year visit of their in-laws, now they rush to get a petites at all costs - even when it would take years to make up for the premiums charged for them now. Makes no sense to me - but perhaps you really need to have a fifth-grader's math skills to figure out that Fit or Civic with 2 grand junk fees/packages is a good deal.

He's hoping he will have equity in it and use it as a down payment on the Highlander. What I would do as the salesman at the Toyota store I would offer to make his last two payments and we would call BMW to pick up the car or he could drive it for the next two months. On the Highlander now way would I sell a Limited at invoice. Maybe $1500 over and keep the rebate and use it to pay the remaining payments. If we did a trade we would have to payoff the trade and then sell it to our BMW dealer next door.

'dino'...I'm surprised you missed this one.

A 5th grader that shows up most of the time would know that a Fit or Civic with 2 grand junk fees/packages is NOT a good deal. Now a 3rd grader might fall for it.

Unfortunately the average consumer does have the math skills of a fifth grader. LOL
What really gets me is that people are complaining about gas prices yet I see them zooming past me on the expressway. I've lowered my speed to 60mph and most cars pass me doing 70+ mph and have their windows rolled down which actually creates drag and uses more fuel. Go figure.

I just remembered this story from my second month here at the dealership. One of my coworkers, Don the dinosaur, had been here forever and really liked to berate and belittle greenpeas such as I was at the time. Don had dealer traded for a Black V6 coupe for a very picky customer, Mr Jones. One day on Dons' day off, another of his customers, Mr Smith came in. Trying to be helpful to my fossillized co-worker I attempted to help Mr Smith.
I'm here about an Accord coupe, he says.
I immediately rush around and grab the one in back that was saved for MR Jones, and put Mr Smith out in it for a test drive. I didnt realize that the car wasnt for Mr Smith but rather was being held for Mr Jones. The dinosaur happened to be downtown eating breakfast and looked up to see his held car go by with the wrong customer in the drivers seat. He bolts up from breakfast and rushes to the dealership to find out whats going on with his sold car and why it was out tooling around town.
Once he gets to the dealership and finds out the situation, he begins to curse me out in a very loud tone of voice What the (&%%^ are you doing with my &*(^&^& dealer traded car you little (*^&%%%. And those were the nice words that I can share with you.
Oh, you want the car back, I inquire.
Youre *&^*^^*&^*^ right I do and right now you little piece of *&^*&^
No Problem, I reply and pick up the phone to call Mr Smith on his cell. Hi Mr Smith this is carhag and I have Don the dinosaur with me he wanted me to relay a message about the car for him. He said to tell you he wants his *&&^^&^ car back right *%(%&% you ^%$^&%.
Mr Smith came back, left in a huff and I was never cursed out by Don the Dinosaur again.

"...have their windows rolled down which actually creates drag and uses more fuel..."

Actually, I have it on good authority (Myth Busters) that it is a wash between windows open/AC off and windows closed/AC on.

I have to agree with a previous poster that people are hysterical in their rush to buy smaller cars. This might be a great opportunity for a salesman that can predict the direction fuel prices are going.

Right now when fuel is high, you can MSRP the fuel sippers and steal the SUV's. If fuel prices trend down you can take all those cramped, under-powered boxes back at a discount and sell the roomy SUV back to the same person.

Like you say Mack, there is no bad month. :)

Actually had nothing to do with size. (Besides, if size mattered they would race greyhound buses on Sunday instead of Nascar stock cars) I learned a long time ago that it is much more satisfying (and legal) to beat someone down, mentally. I have, in the past, went the physical route but prefer to make someone wonder just how insane I am.

I wouldn't call Myth Busters a good authority, half the stuff I see them do I find problems with their procedures.

That being said all the cars I have had got better gas mileage with the windows down A/C off than they got windows up A/C on.
