I have a 2001 Saturn with one of those and I have never changed it. I will put it on the list of things to do this spring. But I will have to get one of those "how to take your car apart and put it back together again" books. I have no idea where the filter is located.
  • sls002sls002 Member Posts: 2,788
The location varies, but yes they should be changed. As long as you climate control is able to blow air out the vents then it probably is not clogged. If you have your car serviced at your dealers, then they should take care of that for you.

hmmmmm - my SRX is here:
    https://www.fueleconomy.gov/mpg/MPG.do?action=browseList1&make=Cadillac

select the AWD SRX and mine is at the top of the list - MPG is average for the first 10,000 miles.

I'd suggest helminc.com (Helm, INc.) who prints the manuals that are listed in the owners manual in the glovebox that you can order.

    Heminc Saturn S

If looking on Ebay make sure you're getting actual factory service manuals with Saturn logo and from Helm. Some people sell a DVD.
Ion manual for example see picture

    imidazol97,

The dealer changed my "HEPA" filter this summer which I assume is what you guys are talking about ???? :confuse:

It was very dirty !!!! The crooked dealership where my wife Eva Braun, baught the 2004 Impala, never changed it or did any maintence to it.

I also imidazol97, am yet to take my car in. I just haven't had time !!!!
I need to call and make an appointment for friday tomorrow.

    -Rocky

P.S. My leaking rims are fixed. It looks like this last time I took it in to the tire shop solved that problem. :) It's nice not having to freeze putting 20-30 pounds of air in every other day. ;)

When do you guys think we will see XWD featured on other GM, models ????

Any idea bumpy, 62, etc, etc, ????? :surprise:

I can't wait till the CTC, comes out !!! Love to see one with XWD and "V" :shades:

  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
To hazard a guess, I'd say the Epsilon II Buick (whatever it ends up being called) is the best bet for XWD in the near-term, though the Alpha platform cars might get it too.
  • wtd44wtd44 Member Posts: 1,208
But will C3H4N2 believe you? He can be a little "pentacyclic" at times. :P

No chance for this to trickle to the CTS bumpy ??? I assume if the CTS, isn't getting it neither would the CTC coupe. :(

I guess if XWD were to make it on a Velite Convertible then I'd be interested. Now that I moved back to Michigan, a AWD system is more important than ever. I guess I still have the Saab, option down the road when I someday recover but then again I wanted a UAW made car. I wonder if the Saab, 9-3 or 9-5 "Made in the USA" idea is dead ???? If not that could be a option. I would think it would be cost effective to build them here if they are truely going to transform the brand and increase the volume like they say. :)

  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
The dealer didn't show you where the filter was located did they? My girlfriend has a 2001 Impala and I don't know if the filter has ever been changed. I imagine her LaCrosse has it in the same place as they're both built on the same platform.
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
No chance for this to trickle to the CTS bumpy ???

Not for the current generation, IMO. It already has an existing AWD system and I don't see GM doing the revisions needed to fit XWD into a single low-volume application. Maybe for the Zeta II-based 3rd-gen CTS?

Finding a link for HOW to do it hits the Staples "EASY" button. Pictures:

    How to do it. ;)
It looks like changing is hits the "Harder" button. But it's still not like the Hondas where they have to cut a metal brace to get in to the filter.

  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
    Here ya go.

"If so, it is located on the passenger side, below the windshield. Turn on the ignition, wipers, and stop them in the up position by turning off the ignition when they are up. Now raise the hood and look on the passenger side. The plastic panel just below the windshield must be removed to gain access to the filter. 4 plastic clips hold it in place. Pull the center up in each clip and the clip will come right out. Reverse to install. If you purchase a Purolator Cabin filter, it comes with instructions."
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Which Hondas are that? If you have to cut through body parts to remove the filter, you're doing it wrong.
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
Yeah, that doesn't make sense to have to cut through metal. I know on the Toyota Camry and Prius, the filters are behind the glove compartment and are pretty easy to change out.

LOL Rocky on the "Eva Braun" reference! Geez, maybe you could post your soap opera on a blog in CarSpace. ;)

I like the idea of cabin air filters, but I don't want one if the replacement procedure is overly complicated or time consuming. On one of my cars it takes a couple of minutes to replace the filter, while one requires @30 minutes- and one takes nearly an hour- which is simply ridiculous...

I was really stretching for some humor, rockylee. In organic chemistry, imidazole is the name of a molecule of special interest in medicine and elsewhere. It has a pentagon shape that links 3 carbons and 2 nitrogens in a circular fashion. The nitrogens are never adjacent to each other. I think I'll quit typing while I'm ahead...
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,675
I like my leSabre. I just unsnap two clips on the plastic behind the motor in front in the windshield and the wipers and air intakes. Rotate door up and off. Pull out filter. Push in new filter. Replace door.

Methinks that you confuse the air filter for the engine and the cabin air filter. The engine air filters have always been easy to replace in most cars. The cabin air filter is usually hidden away somewhere.

GM engine air filters are usually located behind the radiator on the drivers side.
  • dinofdinof Member Posts: 106
On most of the recent new cars I have purchased, that have a
cabin filter, you can find both the location and procedure on
how to change it in your Owner's Manual.

General Motors’ product revival continues to gain traction – at least among automotive journalists.

Four GM vehicles are among the six finalists for the 2008 North American car and truck of the year, the second straight year GM products have starred in the annual contest.

The Cadillac CTS and Chevy Malibu were named finalists for the 2008 North American Car of the Year along with the Honda Accord.

And the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid were named finalists for the North American Truck of the Year along with the Mazda CX-9.

Last year, GM won both contests. The Saturn Aura won the car of the year honors and the Chevrolet Silverado won the truck of the year award.

LOL, yep that's where mine was !!!! I just had the dealer replace it because it was filthy with spiderwebs and other unknown yucky substances. I noticed the air inside the cabin was a lot cleaner after the change. ;) If I would of known it was that easy I would of changed it my self. Well next time I will !!!!

    Good pic imidazol97 :)

    Changing cabin filter?

I do mine about-30K miles for me. Sometimes I see a sale (a real sale, not the reduced price on an overpriced filter) and buy one for the inside.

I took a good look at the filter occasionally and I shake off the dirt on it by hitting it against the bricks or cement on the driveway. I noticed the material on the filter I have is like Tyvek strands. Someone had mentioned that they had washed their filter. So I hit that baby with Dawn by P&G which is the best grease cutter there is and you should have seen the black water rinse out. I dried it and reinstalled. I gained some extra life on that. In spring I'll replace or spray it with a disinfectant like Lysol to kill "stuff" that ends up in it. I'm sure the orginal is treated with a mold retardant. But the filter rarely has enough moisture in it to support mold growth unless you're driving behind trucks kicking up lots of spray.

We have a Cabin Air Filter discussion for a Buick. That's GM. :shades:

A replacement for the one in my Nissan runs $60 so I stuck some filter media from Home Depot in there.

Ok, the story behind the headline is: GM's Bob Lutz hints at retiring in 2010

And he's taking his air filters with him. :shades:

    4 award nominees validate efforts

    December 13, 2007

    BY MARK PHELAN

    FREE PRESS AUTO CRITIC

For the first time in a couple of decades, General Motors can be reasonably confident the light at the end of the tunnel isn't an oncoming train.

GM scored four of the six finalists Wednesday for the 2008 North American Car and Truck of the Year, and it might be on its way to sweeping the coveted awards for two consecutive years, an unprecedented feat for any automaker. The Saturn Aura midsize sedan and Chevrolet Silverado pickup won this year.

It's a payoff for years of work in improving quality, fuel economy, technical sophistication and overall vehicle appeal by the world's largest automaker, which delivered on its promises even as it went through painful downsizings and the reorganization of its engineering and design teams around the world.

"There's no doubt GM is doing a lot of things right," said John McElroy, host of the TV program "Autoline Detroit" and -- like me -- one of the 46 American and Canadian journalists who vote for the awards.

The Cadillac CTS sport sedan and Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan are finalists for car of the year, and the Buick Enclave crossover SUV and Chevrolet

Tahoe hybrid SUV are finalists for truck of the year.

The other finalists are the Honda Accord midsize sedan and Mazda CX-9 crossover SUV. The winners will be announced Jan. 13 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Two words explain GM's dominance of the finals: "Better products," said juror Michelle Krebs, editor of AutoObserver.com.

"It's good news for GM," she said. "It gives them credibility. The Enclave is a good-looking vehicle, and the customers are voting for it. The Malibu is one of the best -- if not the best -- midsize sedans. The CTS is terrific, and the hybrid Tahoe is innovative."

However, neither the nomination nor even winning an award guarantees sales success.

Despite kudos like GM's nominations and Ford's strong performance in recent quality surveys, "the nagging problem the domestics have is that people don't believe their vehicles measure up in design and quality" to foreign brands, Krebs said. "The fact is, they do."

To fully understand how highly we voters think of GM's new vehicles, consider a couple that didn't make the finals.

Mercedes-Benz introduced an all-new version of its best-selling car, the C-class sedan, this year, but Cadillac's CTS stood onstage Wednesday at Cobo Center as a finalist and its direct competitor from the world's most revered luxury automaker did not.

On the truck side, the Tundra, Toyota's self-proclaimed most significant vehicle ever, couldn't crack the top three.

There have been years when GM managed to get only a single vehicle into the finals, and one year when it didn't have even one finalist.

Thousands of people contributed to the reversal of fortunes, but McElroy said it's hard to overstate the contribution of GM's design team, led by Ed Welburn.

"There's been a dramatic turnaround," McElroy said. "I'm knocked out by what Ed Welburn is doing these days."

    Well I can stand beside
    Ideals I think are right
    And I can stand beside
The idea to stand and fight
    I do believe
    There's a dream for everyone
    This is our company

    There's room enough here
    For science to live
    And there's room enough here
    For religion to forgive
    And try to understand
All the people of this land
    This is our company

    From the east coast
    To the west coast
    Down the Dixie Highway
    Back home
    This is our company

    That poverty could be
    Just another ugly thing
    And bigotry would be
    Seen only as obscene
And the ones that run this land
Help the poor and common man
    This is our company

    From the east coast
    To the west coast
    Down the Dixie Highway
    Back home
    This is our company

    The dream is still alive
Some day it will come true
    And this country it belongs
To folks like me and you
So let the voice of freedom
    Sing out through this land
    This is our company

    From the east coast
    To the west coast
    Down the Dixie Highway
    Back home
    This is our company

    Hey Rock,

It's been a while since posting - things have been hectic. Anyway, been trying to keep up with Delphi. Yes, seems they are making some moves, divesting themselves of some business units, the steering group being one of them.

Let the cutting begin I guess. :surprise:

I just hope those in charge are not allowed to profit huge (or at all) from the cut and run tactics...

Sure, Cadillac gets a nice CTS[1], but the rest of the lineup is underwhelming. Chevrolet gets the Corvette and a good Malibu, a decent truck or two, and a bunch of discount-bin fillers. Pontiac has the Solstice and a bunch of corporate welfare, and so on.

Can GM replace all the crud in a year? No. They may demonstrate a consistently good lineup in coming years, but those years aren't here yet. So, to date: cherry picking.

[1] The CTS is a nice effort, but if it were an Infiniti or Mercedes instead of from GM, it would be greeted with a "business as usual" shrug.

You are right Rock. Motor Trend car of the year, Car and Driver 10 best, top contender for North American Car of the year, sales 50% over last year and still rising, praise from most everyone, yet it is just a "business as usual" car if built by some other company.
