I was getting 24mpg with a/c and I got 27 with it off, everything thing the same kind of driving. I have never had a car getting that bad of mpg with the a/c on. Can anybody comment on this?
That said, are you saying the 'hesitation' issues you've had are gone or atleast less prevalent with the A/C off? As sad as it sounds, I hope you've figured out what the problem was.
Hey ilovecars1, lol, I responded to your question the first time in message #1586. I guess you missed it. But, I ended up with the I4 5A.
lol. I gave an over-winded review of my experience and then some.
You probably already know this, but there's a TSB for the '06-'07 Camry equipped with the 2AZ-FE engine and U250E automatic transaxle (ATM) or I4 5A ... it's TSB TC010-06 dated August 11, 2006.
I don't recall our specific conversation, but this isn't a Chevy discussion, as I know you understand. If you have further questions, do drop me an email. I'll be glad to discuss any concerns you have. Thanks!
The snap ring issue we discussed in a separate (now closed) discussion caused some symptoms that certainly sounded like failures, though. But it seems like that problem must be resolved because no one is reporting it any more that I have seen.
I know ilovecars1 says he has heard of failures, but let's get first-hand reports. This rumor stuff gets carried away quickly.
And regarding the 24 mpg, I'm wondering if your "steamroller" 20-inch wheels have anything to do with it.
Unless you put on thin little "rubber band" rim-protector tires, your speedometer and odometer are going to be wildly off (due to the overall increase in tire/wheel diameter), so that indicated mileage will be significantly less than actual mileage. The result: calculated gas mileage will appear to be artificially low.
Yes my hesitation still exist when it is hot out, but not as bad when it cools down even running a/c. Im not saying that the A/C causes the hesitation, I am just throwing things out there to see what other people think. I really dont have a clue.
As for MPG, I range from 22-36 with the 6cyl. I tend to "drive" the car, so guess my average would be 25mpg and do mostly city driving, but on the freeway doing 65-80mph I get from 27-36...the 36mpg was a long cruise and did have some hills. I'm happy with the gas mileage and didn't expect huge MPG with a 270hp 6cyl. It's WAY better than my other cars/trucks. I do plan on new tires and wheels when mine wear out and will go with 18's and am sure that'll drop the mileage a tad.
Good point! Low profile tires are often significantly wider across the tread than OEM tires and use a "stickier" tread rubber compound. Taken together, these details translate to better traction, but at the expense of seriously reduced tire life and poorer fuel economy.
I brought my car in for a couple of minor (cosmetic) issues at 1000 miles and I mentioned this as well. They did a brake inspection, test drove the car, and said everything was working normally and that there were no TSBs.
I want to bring the car back again. My 7 year old Lexus had better brakes, as does my spouse's 2 year old car. I am not a hot rod driver (quite the opposite) but it seems like I really have to press down and even pump the brakes most of the time to get the car to stop. Currently have about 1200 miles on the car.
At a minimum I want to test drive another vehicle and see if there is a difference. I test drove 3 '07 Camrys during my buying process and I don't remember this being a problem with any of them.
With that said we continue to monitor the various online consumer forums addressing the 2007 Camry and have been able to address some of the issues that were reported within the Camry Woes thread itself. For instance, the shift spiking being reported by some owners of Camrys with the 6-spd auto transmission was a real concern. That was investigated by our field technical folks, and we issued a Technical Services Bulletin calling for the installation of a revised valve body for those Camrys being reported by their owners as having this condition.
Another Technical Services Bulletin was issued last month to address a harsh downshifting condition being reported by some Camry owners with the 2AZ-FE engine and 5-spd auto transmission. We continue to investigate other concerns brought to our attention via this forum, such as hesitation on shifting concerns being reported by some owners.
We certainly understand the disappointment when something just does not seem to go right in a new car and are making every effort to address any concerns brought to our attention--either directly though our Customer Experience Center or via this forum.
Thanks Pat and all for the feedback.

Get used to it! My Mini has gone thru 3 clutches (2200 mi)
2 water pumps, rear main seal, power steering pump, and a throttle body, 3 computers, etc, etc, etc. BE SURE TO ASK (and you'll have to get a factory rep) ABOUT ALL "serviice bullitens" and recalls - there are MANY)
Good luck--I'm going to sell mine ASAP!!! I'll take a beating but ?????????????????
----------------------------------------
It makes one wonder why they sell so many. Just thought I would underscore the fact that Toyota is still a very reliable car, first new model year woes notwithstanding.
Guys I hate to be pessimistic or winey, but I don't want a new transmission. Can I refuse the suggested fix and opt to drive it 'as is' for a few more weeks?
A new transmission didn't work for Yorkdale. Mesquite57 didn't want a new transmission. Should I take this next step yet?
They have not offered me an extended warranty or a new car.
Here's the history of shops visits:
Service Visit 1: Service manager first said "Easy fix - just needs to be "reinitialized - 40 minutes max"" (i.e. "computer problem?) Schedule a 40 minute reinitialization visit.
Service Visit 2: Wait at dealer waiting room for 1.5 hours for the 40 minute fix. Then am told that they will "need to reschedule". Reinitialization not working. Motor assembly must be defective. Have to order new motor. Will take "4-6 hours" to replace. Reschedule for motor assembly replacement. Drive home without a fix. (P.S. Was not informed, but soon found out that all my radio settings had been lost due to disconnecting battery)
Service Visit 3: Drop car off, take shuttle to work, have to beg ride back to dealer at end of day (dealer does not offer loaners). Am told "the new motor wasn't working either" and it "wouldn't reinitialize". Drive home without a fix. Yet another sunroof motor on order. (As an aside, this time my radio settings were intact when I drove off. Hmmm?)
Service Visit 4: To be scheduled when part comes in.
Other misc. woes:
1. Car was rear-ended in a parking lot two days after I bought it. Now have new rear bumper.
2. Tire switch done by dealer the day of purchase (I had asked for Michelins, but it came delivered with Goodrich) was done without the proper calibrations, so the tire pressure light came on after a day. Took us a while to figure that one out.
3. Storage bin door below the NAV system is stuck. New one is on order.
All that said, I love this car! Just averaged 32 MPG during a long trip with speeds in excess of 80 and A/C on most of the time! It's quiet, smooth, feels luxurious, and has the storage I need for long trips. Just wish I could use the sunroof and open up that storage bin...
I observed the tachometer on our 6 speed Camry while the transmission was upshifting through all the gears. Each time a shift occurred, rpm rose about 200 rpm, then as the shift was completed it dropped about 700 rpm and stayed there for a moment or two, then rose again as the car accellerated. Each time a shift occurred, this cycle of rpm change repeated. At each shift point, there was a spread of about 900+ rpm. Then if I repeated the test and accellerated heavily with WOT, the same thing occurred, but the rpm spread was greater by around 400 more rpm-up to 13 or 1400 rpm.
We also have a Pontiac G6 which my wife uses. I took it out and did the same thing. It reacted the same way with an rpm spread of 600 to 800 rpm between shifts with normal accelleration and higher when I stepped on it.
As far as I'm concerned, what I'm seeing is a normal rpm/shift pattern for all auto transmissions. When a shift is completed, the rpm will always rise somewhat, then drop a fair bit because the transmission is in a higher gear and the engine doesn't have to turn as fast.
Could it be that some of us are letting the power of suggestion lead us to believe our cars have a "flare" between shift points because of the differences in rpms before and after the shift occurs? I really wonder if all this is just much ado over nothing.
For any of us who actually have the issue, your email reminds me of the ridiculous statement, "morning sickness is all in a woman's head".
When you experience a flare of nearly 2000 RPMs and it feels as if your car is disengaged or in neutral while accelerating, then when the car catches up with the transmission RPMs, and jerks you back in your seat or burns rubber you'll know its more that a "perception" of a flare.
We appreciate your thoughts, but perhaps you ought to go back and review some of our posts (there is even a video) before you speak out of turn and insult our intelligence.
Thanks,
It's too bad that the TSB does not resolve the issue, at least not with my 07 SE V6. My dealer now tells me that Toyota is working on the problem but is yet to have a solution. My first Toyota experience has been a difficult one to say the least, I can't remember having to go to the dealer once in five years with my Olds Alero. I have been to the dealer at least 6 times in the first month.
A new transmission didn't work for Yorkdale. Mesquite57 didn't want a new transmission. Should I take this next step yet?

Lativ6,
I'm afraid that if they are offering to replace your transmission that you need to let them do it to protect your rights under the Lemon Laws and NCDS. I was never offered a new transmission (Thank God!) but would have had to accept one if offered in order to "give the dealer 4 chances to fix the car".
Having said that, if you read through this forum and/or ToyotaNation "1st Camry Problems" you'll find that even transmission replacements may not fix the problem. So this could be one of the fixes that doesn't work. If it doesn't, keep bringing it back.
My problem occurred much more noticeably when cold. You may have to leave the car overnight at the dealer to duplicate the problem. I also had problems duplicating it here when it was 110 deg. even though the car was sitting for 4 hours.
It's just a pain to have to go through with "major surgery" and the time investment involved.
You have my sympathy. Hang in there! Toyota will eventually make it right even if it requires arbitration.

My understanding is that the extended warranty is automatically issued on V6 6-sp automatic tranmissions replaced over the 2nd gear snap-ring issue, and, even if the transmission is replaced, a vehicle trade is still an option at the vehicle owner's discretion if he/she is still dissatisfied. (dunno whether vehicle trade is an option over the valve body issue, though...) If Toyota's rescinded that policy, I haven't seen it posted in these discussions. Have you specifically asked a Toyota rep. (and, I'm not referring to dealership personnel) about these options?
The brakes are the same on the V6 as on the I4.
The I4 should stop shorter because it weighs 140-150 pounds less than a V6 model.
I also have the issue with the sun roof. I didn't think anything about it when I test drove the Camry V6 SE w/ Nav. I was thinking that Toyota made it like this on purpose. I would like to know the outcome of this, please let me know so I can get it fixed as well. My production date is 8-4-06 on my vehicle.
I am happy to say that after a 2,000 mile road trip up to northern California I did not experience any transmission problems and the car has 2,500 miles currently. Has anyone had problems with their vehicle transmission with a production of 08-01-06 or later?
I just found out that my sunroof suffers from the same will not shut properly syndrome. I will be bringing it in yet again for this to be fixed.
That is a popular and long-lasting legend. All brakes develop enough torque to block wheels. A heavier car exerts more pressure on its tires, and the braking force is the product of that pressure and the coefficient of friction between the tire and the road. This higher force stops the larger mass in the same time.
The two real key factors are the coefficient of friction (which depends on the rubber compound, the pavement and the suspension geometry) and brake dynamics (how quickly the maximum braking force is reached, how evenly applied left-to-right, and how precisely the ABS performs).
Just look at the braking distances of the 2-ton+ Mercedes Class "S" to convince yourself.
Back to our topic "Woes" : Toyota ABS is quick at releasing brake pressure but slow at re-applying it. On uneven or slippery surfaces, it makes you feel like your are loosing braking power and it makes braking distances longer.
Also, my 2007 TCH, as other models, uses energy-efficient tires, which have a lower coefficient of friction.
Bruce
Sorry, I'm in total agreement with 07xle's original satement.
Kinetic energy is one/half times velocity squared.
Do you have any reference for the heavier car with all other variables the same will require more distance and time to decelerate from a speed to zero than a lighter car with same tires, etc.?
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
I don't think I'm the one stubbornly...., you show no proof so I take that for a "No."
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
The first thing the head of the service dept. tried was to "reinitialize" the sunroof, which did not work. I guess that's the same thing as "normalize". New sunroof motor and ECU combo was called in, which also did not work. I await their next attempts at a fix. Maybe the postings on this forum will help Toyota detect a failure pattern. I expected more out of Toyota quality.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
I've been told this is normal of the SE dual ehaust though I'm not convinced. I can also feel a vibration while idling with hand on the middle arm rest. When taking off from a stop the vibration seems to stop.
Thank you for your responses, Chuck
Naomi, my customer service rep. from Toyota, has called and checked in with me almost every day for the last three weeks. She is as sweet as pie until I ask for anything! She said no to an extended warranty, no to a new vehicle, no to paying one note, no to speaking to her supervisor or speaking to another customer service rep.
I picked up my car on Friday to drive while waiting for the transmission. The flaring is definately still there. My husband has not been able to drive since these issues started so I had my 21 year old son drive it. He has a 2006 4Runner Sport and called me to say he was so sorry for me.
I'll update after transmission is replaced. Thanks for your reply.
Be aware that this forum is specifically designed to 'pull' for the dissatisfied. It's the purpose of this forum in the same way that a Rorschach test is designed to 'pull' for psychological weaknesses and faults. One wouldn't expect a lot of drivers who love their vehicles and everything about it to post in a Camry Woes forum. The numbers don't lie though.
There are tens of thousand more satisfied new owners than those very unhappy and very vocal posters here. There are nearly 250,000 of these on the road now. This is not a massive problem. It may be a significant pia to some of those who took delivery early in production.
plus the generally lukewarm reviews of the '07 Camry in many sites and publications,
This statement is just ridiculous. The opposite is true.
Nice try at trolling though.

I beg your pardon?
I asked a question and made an observation based upon my reading of many sites and publications. Perhaps in your mind anything other than fawning admiration of Toyota is considered a troll. I feel badly for you if that's true. Please do not toss around the "troll" word so loosely.

250000 cars on the road: Can be true
not all the cars have problems: May be true
All the cars owners do not have internet access. If I see that only 100 people wrote in the reviews. That's a sample population. How many unsatisfied? atleast 50% completely unsatisfied. some others suggest improvement in tranny. So how many are completely satisfied? Very little. This is what the statistics say.
As I said earlier, I love toyota cars. My first choice is still camry becoz of its looks, 5 star crash test ratings, 7 air bags, quality of upholstry, spacious etc..but I am very much convinced that this car has some problem, that toyota could not rectify yet. I hope they find it soon before ruining their name completely.
