yes, it could have something to do with the ABS system in your car. many vehicles (probably all) perform some form of ABS self-test upon initiating forward movement after the vehicle has first been started. it only happens once. it's possible in your vehicle it's more noticeable when the vehicle is cold. what does your manual say? does it indicate that the test happens at a certain forward speed? perhaps you could link the sound with your speed if so.
The thread is more exoteric because it is so common, judging by the number of people that have defective Toyota transmissions. I have learned by experience that our more advanced and technically minded folks do not know which end of a screwdriver to use. They have expounded on their theories on what is the problem with the transmissions. But not one person from Toyota has stated what the problem is. If I am in error please state the name of the individual and his or her title in the company.
Don't know if we're talking about the same thing, but both Camry's (2002, 2007)make that sound from the front wheel area when first starting out, also a friend's does the same thing. Seems I heard it has something to do with the brakes, and is normal.
Says who? My new ES350 (made in 08/06) has same RPM flare problem. It doesn't happen often. Maybe a couple time a day or once every couple days. Took to dealer yesterday but couldn't reproduce it. Technician called Lexus and was told to stay put because there is no definitive fix yet. The volve body replacement fixes it sometimes but not always. I am stay putitng. It doesn't bother me that much at the moment.
I have a 2007 XLE Camry with just over 4000 miles. I had noticed that the radio would mute when changing between modes for minutes on end and that when I was listening to satellite, the sound would go in and out, sort of like a speaker was going (but this only happened when listening to satellite). Then just once, there was this horrible screaching sound, like a piercing smoke alarm, that happened while I was driving. It only lasted bout 7 seconds or so and it stopped. I took it to the dealer, and they could find none of these problems, so they put in a brand new radio. Yesterday, I was driving and there was a horrible crackling noise and loud piercing noise that sounded like a speaker was blowing out. I turned off the radio but the sound didn't stop, and it kept getting louder. I drove straight to the dealer where I shut the car off and the noise continued! Has anyone had this problem or know of any possible reason that this could be happening?
I actually have the same issue, I drive a 07 SE V6. I always hear a click from a cold start, put in reverse and drive forward. 3 sec later I will hear the click. I took my car to the dealer to have them check it out. They said there is nothing wrong with it. The technician stated on my repair invoice "Noise is from rotor caliper pad shift-normal. Brakes checked for defect. No problem found.
What I am going to do is go to another Toyota dealership and test drive a 07 Camry. To see if it makes the same clicking sound. If not then I'm going back to my dealer and raise this to their management.
Another thing I thought was weird is that the two front doors will be locked. I can open both front doors without unlocking it. Every car I have drove, you have to unlock it first. They said theres nothing wrong with that either. Yea it sounds dumb of me bringing it up to them, but I just wanted a confirmation that this is a normal function.
1) The sound is normal, and I have seen this question asked many times because everybody, including myself has the "clunk" sound after a few seconds of driving after a long rest. It's the ABS self-check.
2) As to the front doors being able to open from the inside when locked... this is a safety design. They will still be locked from the outside, but for emergence/convenience reasons, the front doors can always be opened from the inside. I had this feature in 4 other cars (different manufacturer) going back to th early 1990's.

This was the norm for domestic cars in the 50s and up to the mid 60s -- when you activated the inside door handle, the front doors would unlock, even if the lock plungers were down initially.
With the advent of federal safety standards in the late 60s, many manufacturers, including GM and most of the imports changed their door locks so you had to pull up the plunger (or if you had power locks, hit the unlock switch), if the doors were locked initially. Otherwise the inside door handle wouldn't open the doors. I think Ford but not Chrysler went along with this system -- it wasn't required by any safety standard. IIRC, GM called these "overriding" door locks.
Today, though, many cars have auto-locking doors. A lot of people don't like getting "locked in" and having to undo the locks separately of pulling open the door handle. So, many manufacturers, including Toyota, have reverted to the decades-old system, where pulling on the door handle unlocks the front doors.
You're not alone. On long trips (3 times between LA and Mammoth Lakes, CA, for instance, about 5 hours), Mine will emit an incredible bang and squeal. In my case, total event duration is about 1 second. Like you said, as if a speaker has popped. But it seems to be at an incredibly high volume regardless of what volume I am listening at. One time, I looked down right after it happened and could have sworn I caught the tail end of my satellite radio's boot up process (XM Roady). So I have been under the assumption that it's the Roady. But I have never come to terms with the fact that it's always deafeningly loud even if I'm listening to the Roady at a very moderate volume. I think if it were the Roady, it would be as loud as I have the car's stereo set, not deafening every time. I'm beginning to suspect that it's actually an electrical problem. Mine will do it randomly without any button input from me. It's startling as hell, not to mention annoying. I wish I had a solution for you, but maybe when your post gets enough responses, someone with some info will happen by and help us out. I'll repost if I find anything out.
i would tend to think this is the radio/amplifier having internal electrical issues. if you saw your XM roady rebooting, then it could be a power-supply issue... however, if the radio/amp has an internal short / intermittent, it might be enough to cause a voltage spike on the XM's supply.
seems to me someone should be able at least to verify all cabling/wiring (I presume a wire harness was used). if that all checks out, me personally, i'd see if a radio/amp swap did the trick.
I purchased my 2007 Camry XLE on November 4. The car had close to 200 miles on it when I purchased it, (it was located at another dealer.) I began to noticed around 400 miles that it had a 3-4th gear engine flare. Initially it would only happen from a "cold start" within the first mile. I took it into the shop around 600 miles, the engine flare was now happening multiple times. They found the issue, and Toyota had a suggested fix. 2 weeks later the part came in.
I dropped my car off, (it now had just over 900 miles on the odometer), and they installed the part. Within the first 2 miles of driving my repaired car, the engine flare came back and was in between all gears, and first gear was slipping every once in a while. After a couple of days of the dealer contacting Toyota about the issue, and trying several of their recommendations, and nothing working, Toyota authorized them to replace my transmission. I'm still waiting for my transmission to come in. Tomorrow I will have owned my car for 45 days, and it has been in the shop for 15 days, and I still do not have a date I will get my car back.
Your story is becoming quite common; shift flare followed by new valve body followed by shift flare followed by new transmission. Following this forum since May, I've seen 2 successful transmission replacements, the rest have resulted in more shift flares and unhappy customers. Good luck.
hi, I have been following this forum for a while now, and actually decided to buy the I-4 instead of V6 after seeing so many owners having trouble with the transimission on V6. I also found throttle lag in 5A of my 4 cylinder engine, and asked the dealer for software update mentioned in TSB-EG056-06, and have been pretty happy with the fix - 1k miles so far and hasn't seen the throttle lag. Have to reschedule another appointment though, since dealer hasn't been able to fix the squeak in the center console  . So far very happy with the car ..although my MPG has dropped from 27 to 23/24 (mixed driving) especially with the cold weather.
Glad to hear the TSB was effective for you. I'm wondering how much of a role the increased amount of time your car idles in the cold weather warming up and the observed decrease in your fuel econ has.
Additionally, winter grade gasolines are more volatile to aid cold weather starting. Increased volatility = a higher percentage of smaller molecules = fewer BTUs/gallon = a reduction in fuel economy. (still beats walking, though... )
My 2007 Camry V6 XLE RPM Flare problem was not resolved by installing a new throttle body, but was resolved only by installing a new transmission. After 500 miles I have had no problems with RPM Flare.
True, and perhaps irrelevant regarding a replacement throttle body. But, still, wouldn't it be a kick in the backside if a few cognative techs have discovered with old fashioned diagnostic reasoning instead of relying solely on blind "cookbook page turning" and TSBs that when a replacement valve body or trannie fails to ameliorate the RPM flare problem that there's unrelated, but pertinent throttle body butterfly valve sticking occurring concurrently... (Guess which type of tech I'd want looking into my car's problem if it had one that defied factory specified procedures that haven't exactly been 100% effective.)
Hello silverbullet 10 I bought my Camry SE, 4cyl automatic in mid-August 2006. I have approximately 6500 miles on the vehicle. I also have a dashboard that "creaks" (seems like it's coming from the passenger side) and from Day 1, have noticed a hesitation of about 3 seconds between depressing the gas pedal to getting acceleration (i.e. when I'm passing someone on the highway). Is this what you mean by "throttle lag?" Did you mention the TSB to the dealer, or did they advise you? How responsive were they? I never brought my vehicle in, as I just assumed that's the way the dashboard and engine / transmission were designed. Also, my best highway mileage to date has been 29.5 (all highway, 60-65 mph) much less than the EPA of 33 mpg. I usually get approx. 28 mpg. Thank you.

I have the same "throttle lag" and the dealer told me that is the way the car was designed. The drive by wire effect. I pushed him on the lag and he would not back down and said that the TSB did not cover my car based on my VIN.
The rattle/creak that I experience actually originates from the side-panel of the center console on the driver side, and the rattle is pretty audible especially driving on bumps/other road imperfections. I don't think I experince creaks from the dashboard, but I saw a TSB for that somewhere in the forum. The "throttle-lag" is just like what you describe, on depressing the gas pedal the car doesn't seem to 'go'; there is no response: no increase in rpm, no transmission downshift. After reading this forum, I asked the dealer to apply the TSB without asking for their diagnosis. My poor mileage might be related to my short commute to work (10 miles 1 way, 70/30 hwy/city)
Hello, I have the same problem and would like the details on how the replacement came to be. I have the new valve body with the same no-fix result. Did the dealer people see the problem and implement the solution or did you have to go to Toyota directly? Thanks, Super Ray
You will need to duplicate the problem withthe dealership each time. Your next step will be a trans replacement. There has only been two reports on this forum that said the trans replacement fixed the flare pronblem. I can tell you personaly it did not fix mine.
I have a hybrid with some windshield hook knocks (ticks), which I will leave to my beloved dealer, and I used to hear creaks from the center console area.
On each side of the console these is a plastic part that can pulled back. I used some thin (1/8") neoprene weather strips at some points to fix that.
The bezel around the speed stick was more difficult to fix because there are many contact points. I finally resolved this problem by applying black electrical tape on the top of the black plastic on each side of the cavity in which the shifter draws a sliding plastic cover.
Not clear ? First, unscrew the shifter handle, pull up the aft side of the shifter bezel, then pull up the front side with a slight rearward pull. Once the bezel is disengaged, look at its bottom side. You will see a clear plastic part that is partially aluminized. The bottom side of that clear plastic part creaks when it rubs with the black part mentionned in the above paragraph. Do something (it has to be thin) on that rubbing surface.
I've been reading a posts every so often and have posted a few myself regarding. I've had a few knick knack issues come up with resolution but none when it comes to the RPM flare. My last visit to the dealership basically has left me in limbo. The service advisor, shop foreman, and techs involved have pratically gave up and keep telling me that Toyota is aware of this issue and they will call me when a solution comes out. After finally talking with the Service Manager, whom has been of no help, he told me I could meet with the Rep from Toyota and would get back with me when I could have an appointment scheduled. I have been trying to meet with some "Toyota Representative" for the dealer for the last 6 weeks and after numerous calls and no progress, it appears that he/she has been replaced and it's now someone else. Since it is the holidays, it may be a few weeks before I get to meet with the replacement.. They keep telling me that they will get with me when I could meet this so called rep to discuss. Basically I have been getting the run around, round, round... I'm so over dealing with this issue that I am on the verge of giving up and just drive with my nice looking vehicle that feels like jumping a few hundred RPMs every now and then.(rpm flare 25-35 mph ~300-1500rpm depending on aceleration) Okay...now that I got that off my chest. Can we get another forum started just for this particular issue. The dealership keeps telling me that this is an isolated issue and from what I read here, this is not the case. I have told them that I have read posts of others online with similar problems only to get the response of "We only follow Toyota's direction" or along the lines of ...online boards are not a reliable representation in terms of problems with the vehicle. I would like to get a poll of who has this problem and what could be done to get Toyota to remedy this. Trading it in is not a finacially sound option but I will tell you that for my first Toyota to own, unless they can fix this problem, this will more than likely be the last Toyota I will own. I would like to start this poll of unresolved RPM flares. If you are in the same boat, please respond with the following format. Maybe if we can get some numbers as to how many have the same problem, something can be done before Toyota really looses first time customers like myself or long time loyal ones. If there is a poll already started, please post.
1 - 2007 XLE-V6 purchased May 06, valve body replaced, original transmission
I have a problem with my car shaking. I have had 3 sets of tires now. The dealership first said it was faulty tires, something about the road force balance and fed me some line about bad batch of tires from Michelin when I questioned as to why this was the third set of tires. Still have a shake. They now say they do not feel the vibration and they were just trying to make me happy when changing the other tires and it could be cold spots that occur on tires sometimes when the car sets for a while. I would buy the cold spots theory if this wasnt the third set of tires. Needless to say I have just emailed Toyota about starting an arbitration case. I dont care what they say, vibration in a brand new car is not normal.
I agree on the getting the act together. I have had my car in the shop 5 times now. I can feel the vibration in the front of my car and the seat shakes as well. According to Toyota, this is normal. Is that crazy or what? The first 4 times my car was in the shop it was not normal, they said it was bad tires. Now that they have no idea what it is ...it's normal.
Hi, I've also been on other forums about this issue, as I have the once when cold 3rd-4th flare with my 2007 Camry V6. Check out the Toyota Nation forum for example.
The Lexus ES350 has this same engine/transmission combo, and they're having the same problems. Check out the Club Lexus forum in he ES350 area. Recently there has been posts concerning this transmission issue, and it looks like a fix MAY be on the horizon. Check out this thread at: http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=250652
As you read and get to the page 3 area, you'll see some posts about what the problem seems to be. Remember that this applies to our 2007 Camry V6 cars.
I feel like I just read everything I have went through and I have got to the point that I am driving it and trying to ignore the problem! See they were slick, when they had it in the first time they kept telling me the valve body was on backorder and that they would just replace the whole trans, thus making that one attempt to fix as opposed to two times if they did the valve then back again for the trans...I am thinking in terms if the "lemon law"...so now they have had it twice but the second was to update the "codes"...well, it still flares and I am told by the service manager to "just drive it" and "enjoy it". I was also told that "Toyota will not do anything else and the car is functioning normally"...this all from a guy who I watched flirt with all the female service reps during my last service visit (60 mins)...Do we start a class-action????
Hope that this helps you.I'm having the same problem, had the car in to the dealer in Nov.when they found that they could not duplicate the problem and told me to return if it continued.Well today I took the car back and got the right service tech, who told me about a 3rd to 4th gear shifting problem and that there is a tech. bullitan for a valve replacement in the trans.for the v6,6 speed trans. So ask your dealer to check for this. Good luck.
Go with the manual. If the dealership only has 5W-30, bring the correct oil with you or find another dealership (or an independent shop and keep the service receipt).
This is just a suggestion based on a similar problem a friend had with a new Lincoln years ago.
After a long period of balancing, re-balancing, changing tires, etc. an employee "quietly" suggested he ask to see the cars history from delivery. It turns out the car was somehow droped and damaged at the time of delivery, Repaired and sold to him. Armed with this information, he got the dealer to check all four "wheel hubs"(?) the part your wheels are lugged onto, found at least one to be defective, and somehow changed it or repaired it, and, problem fixed. I actually was never in the car either before it was repaired or after, but he says all was ok after that. May not have anything to do with your problem.........but who knows. By the way, he described his problem as so bad, sometimes at higher speeds, the dashboard would shake. Hope it works out for you. New car should not have "the shakes".
fwb42, I already had the valve replacement done and that did not fix the problem. I drove around town quite a bit today and noticed that if I was parked for an extended period(like at a long red stop light or left the car running while parked) it flared most everytime. Just so that I am on the same page with others who are questioning what exactly is happening. The following link was left on a post in this forum a few weeks back with videos of the problem by corton. Many Thanks for the video documentation.
I have the same problem, along with the RPM flare I still have after the tranny was replaced, I have had the gear shift box replaced, my dash is warped, window seal was malfunctioning, air bag cover falling off, sterio replaced, speakers replaced, ASL does not work. I could continue on. I am getting ready to go to arbitration, Toyota has a process which a 3rd party come in and mediates a solution, being a first time Toyota owner I am really disapointed in the car. No new car should have this long of a list of problems. Crazy! :confuse:
If any of us buys a any new camry 2007 and finds the hesitation issues, or transmission issues that people continue to complaint about, we must report it in this forum, and in the other forums, so people know, and are not being treated as ... we need to stick together. This includes those who just bought the car with "good deals" Thanks
PLease believe! I too have had a list of simalar problems. Trans replaced still has rpm flare and hard shifts, dash bord/window knocking/ticking, ASL not working. My car was built in July06. Also gas milage not what it should be? This is all a reality. Buyer beware
I know of 3 people who've bought an 07 and all have had zero problems. I test drove 3 07's and didn't encounter any of these problems. I've rented two 4 cylinder 07's and encountered zero issues. The way I see it is on this board there are a couple people who have had issues (every car gets them) and other people who are anti Toyota. I didn't buy a Camry b/c I intensely disliked the front stack design and the horrible pale blue lighting at night, but love the power and looks of the V6 SE.
Well as an LE-I4 owner who used to have the hesitation and originally reported the cruise control problem (prior to TSB fix), I have empathy for those owners that have the V6 flare problem. I have seen the video of the problem that one owner posted, and agree it's a huge problem if your car is unfortunate enough to have it. Why some cars have these problems, and others don't.....I can't explain.
Maybe the host will be kind enough to move my post somewhere more appropiate!! As for potential criticism from anonomous BB posters, I can take it!! They just need to hear that the problem Camry's are a tiny % of the Camry's sold....
About every three months I have to post the following URLs when the Toyota lovers start accusing folks of not really having problems. So as they used to say "Put that in your pipe and smoke it." I would like a reply please.

That being said, at 60 mph on the freeway, I can get my trip meter reading up to 37 mpg (but it is 1.26 mpg higher than my actual mileage).

I've also been on other forums about this issue, as I have the once when cold 3rd-4th flare with my 2007 Camry V6.
Check out this thread at:

As you read and get to the page 3 area, you'll see some posts about what the problem seems to be.
Remember that this applies to our 2007 Camry V6 cars.
The manual recommends 0w-20/5w-20
However, some dealerships are are putting in 5w-30.
I already had the valve replacement done and that did not fix the problem.

This is all a reality. Buyer beware
As for potential criticism from anonomous BB posters, I can take it!! They just need to hear that the problem Camry's are a tiny % of the Camry's sold....
