Note that the 2001 GMC Sierra C series does not have outside handles on the rear doors. Did not someone post more than once on this topic that he had seen either a 2000 or a 2001 gm 1500 with outside rear door handles?? I don't think it is going to happen for GM 01 1500 models, let alone on 00 1500 models. People who want outside rear door handles will need to buy a truck (Tundra doesn't count) with the full sized rear doors. I like the extended cabs with their 6 1/2 and 8 feet beds and do not need or want the four full size doors. I'll take my car when I need four full size rear doors. Bob

by Red. Don't think that the Sierra or Silverado will come in crew cab flavors...they are using the Avalanche for that with its mini bed.

Either these brakes are scary or great. I was going down a road this morning 6:30 am about 60 mph next thing i know everyone is hitting there brakes. I had to slam down on em pretty hard i hate that noise and feel they have like the crunching but i must say i pretty much stopped on a dime. i was pretty amazed. My old S-10 with abs didnt stop this good. Ill take that wierd feel as long as i know i can stop like that.

You had a tundra before you bought your silverado didnt you? Must have, to be able to make that kinda comparison.

    hahaha

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    that is normal Ryan..

it really sucks when you are casually stopping...and hit a bump...it lets go..then re-grabs with the grind feel...

I hate that crap....there is a small second where you feel like the brakes failed.

Sure I owned a Tundra...(I saw you at the dealer...remember)...

I used it for the kids to play with when they came over...it's out in the sand box some place?

oh yea my fault i forgot thats when i went for my test drive. Those damn kidds probably buried it. Let you dogg out and dig it up.

BREAKS: Yea i know they are normal. I hate hitting a bump too and that feeling but its doing its job. All i can ask for

    better??

I had no problems with drum rears and disc fronts..I believe the rears were anti-lock?

sometimes I feel like all the safety stuff in and out..like airbags and crush zones go too farr?

I suppose they save lives..but you also here of the opposite...

Where do you get the 25% coupons on the shocks, with that and the $27 rebate would be a deal,is this royal purple oil synthetic or regular oil.BTW my truck pulled to the right also, after the dealer aligned it it drives perfect

  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
go to carparts.com, on their web page, you should find a link that says "sign up now for special coupons" click on that link and follow the directions. Within a week you should start receiving emails with discount codes.

Royal Purple sells for $6.99 qt. or $5.99 ea case price...it is synthetic.

I am in the process of getting the first wax on my 2000 2500. I have 2100 mile on the rig and all I can say is what a nice ride. Absolutely no problems. The 6.0 with the 4:10 rear is a real hauler. I have the color that you all associate with the older folks or women! My Carmin Red PU is a real looker (when clean). Anyway, I have what appears to be water spots on the hood and elsewhere that a good clearcoat wax does not seem to get off. I am afraid of going with a too aggressive wax for fear that it will mess with my clearcoat. Could this situation be attributed to the trip out here from Michigan on the rail car? Any info would be appreciated. Also, I didn't get a response on the replacement of the 4X6 rear speakers - anybody out there done that??
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
You need to clay the truck to remove water spots...then wash...then wax...go to

Ok...gonna go ahead and take the jump on the new LT. All the talk on here is getting redundant and this won't help but what is the best bug shield?

TIM...sure you have an opinion on this!

One person's repeated statements about truck colors and age of the owners only applies to that person. I think Carmine red is a very nice color and you made a good choice even though I have light Pewter. Bob

I don't remember who was asking about how to get information on gm service bulletins that have been issued, but you can get some information on these at www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ However, they seem to be several months behind in listings them. Bob
  • bob332bob332 Member Posts: 137
Additional: Click on safety and issues. Summaries are listed on several TSB that have been issued on 99 and a few on 00 Silverados. Bob.

Does anyone know how to tell the difference in the 4.8 and the 5.3 engines by just looking under the hood without the trucks being side by side. Thanks. Bob
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
My '99 was recalled to have a sticker placed around the front brake caliper, telling me to not let the caliper hang when changing pads.

Of course this is common sense and has been in the service manuals since disc brakes first appeared a long, long time ago.

Kind of a boring recall. My '67 Camaro at least was recalled for a bad motor mount that allowed the engine to lift up and bind the throttle linkage ... mine was never brought in for that recall either (makes for exciting left turns from a stop).

I'm not at home, so I can't look at my 5.3 to see if there are any distinguishing looks or marks, but the sure way to confirm engine, rearend or any of those options that aren't easy to spot, do some research here on the web on the car sites and note the option codes for the engine and options you are looking for. Then when looking at the truck, open the glove box, there is a sticker there that lists all the options on that truck.

I thought the displacement or other obvious signs used to be right on part of the engine, but I haven't got to spend enough time with my new one to know what it looks like under the hood.

My wade bedrail caps had no holes but yes the holes are for the stakes. IT uses 3m tape to hold it down. Towards the rear on mine above the Z71 sticker it has a wade sticker. They are nice i think mine cost me $58 and some change. Try performance parts they arent on the website but are in the catolog let me know if you would like the number. They look nice only complaint when the dealership took off the one side to repaint the truck they didnt tape it down well and i had to put some more on but its good now.

    ----------------------
actually, I'd have to agree..our carmine red fits the bill..us old folks (I'll be hitting 50 this year, hubby hit 53..ouch!)have the 6.0, 4.10 too! Hubby picked the color..and lots of people seem to like it..even some of the young 'uns! I think us ol' folks pick colors that have been around a while, since we tend to keep our stuff longer, and traditional colors seem to sell down the line, when the "unusual" colors aren't being sold anymore at the dealers....heck red, black and white, will never go away (flares may even be out by the time we (or our estate) get rid of this truck)!

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
carmine...only one person said it was for old people...If I could have got 2-tone..or the Oak leather actually looked like oak!...(the only color I would want with carmine)..I would have got Carmine...I think it's the best color..hands down. I got black though for now....which is about equal..when clean.

Bug guard..what's the best??....one that does not break or make wind noise! I was going to get a Lund..(the most popular here)..when I was going on a road trip one week...and the night before I had no bug guard...went to a local place around the corner...he had to order a lund..or he had an "image" in stock for $10 less....I said to bring it out...it looked good..I asked about making wind noise...he said hasn't had one come back yet..I said put it on...2 minutes later I was on my way...musta been gone 5 minutes,...it gives me a lot of room between to get your hand down in between also for washing without taking it off.
    http://www.teleweb.net/mgdvhman/Bug2.jpg
So I guess the "best" for me has been this one...due to the fact that I drive highway every day at a high rate of speed--75-80..and not a single noise for 16,000 miles so farr....it also does not effect the washer fluid too much....meaning it doesn't force the fluid to roll back onto the hood while on the highway...

5.3/4.8....shouldn't there be a sticker right on the fan shroud?....I'd have to go look...

67 Camaro...funny you should say that..a buddy had a 67 in high school....I used to go to the pizza place almost every day for lunch...I would get there before this guy...and it was a left turn in the place...it was always crowded..and it was a slow turn..but sharp..he would always gun it while turning and stomp the brakes right after...one day I asked why he always did that..sometimes almost hitting someone...he said he had a bad engine mount..and it would tilt...and pull the throttle....I never knew it was a common problem...until now..
    see what you learn here!!

Pneumonia seems better...it's amazing what real drugs will do for you!
I think i might ditch the keg and get a dispensor for the fridge that makes these pills pop out!....powerfull puppy's I'll tell ya...

You don't need to pop the hood to tell whether
    there's a 4.8 or 5.3 inside -- it's in the VIN.
    The 8th digit (position) is V for the 4.8 and T for the 5.3. BTW, U is 6.0; W, 4.3.
  • sharkskinsharkskin Member Posts: 11
Thanks for the advice. MPG doesn't bother me. I get about 8-10 as it now. I guess the deciding factor will be price and availability. At this point I'm assuming I'll have to special order my truck if I want all the bells and whistles. I plan on test driving both 1500 and 2500 series within the next couple of weeks and with a little luck I'll be riding high by summers end.
By the way....does anyone know how well the new paints are holding up on these trucks? I like the Indigo Blue myself. When the "woman" and I went to buy her Malibu (2 yrs ago) I was told by my boss's brother-in-law who works for GM to stay away from the champagne color. Anyone hear anything else??
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157

if for some reason you dont have or cant see the VIN.... when looking at the engine, the word"VORTEC" is written on the drivers side of the cap of the 4.8.......and on the passenger side for the 5.3
  • treyduhontreyduhon Member Posts: 7
I, too, have been interested in the 2500 series p/u with 6.0 liter and 4x4....until I saw the picture of the new 1500 c-series they're coming out with. What I want to know is: how will the suspension differ from the usual 1500 1/2 ton, and will this truck have heavy duty trans, and other heavy duty parts (trans cooler, etc.) I prefer the ride and durability of the 2500 series but would consider this new c-series if it's comparible. Does anybody know anything? Thanks.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
series will be more of a luxury yuppie type...possible AWD.

I doubt it will be for heavy work

    - Tim
  • rdve80rdve80 Member Posts: 139
Tim's right, it will have all of the top of the line SUV options and a high price. 1/2 Ton with the 6.0L for higher performance, but not heavy work. So far only announced as a Sierra model and not Silverado. Most likely first intro of 4-wheel steering option.
  • joelisjoelis Member Posts: 315
Have any of you replaced the speakers in your trucks yet? I've been reading on the Tahoe topic that people are getting good results by just changing to better quality front and rear speakers, and not having to even bother addressing the amp after that.

Up until now, I thought the front door speakers were halfway decent, and it was just the rear ones that needed replacing and boosting asap. But I'm hearing that the front ones are not that great after all, once comparing to a good aftermarket set.

If anyone has changed theirs, what are your results?

Uh, don't think so. I have a 5.3L, and as you can see from the following picture, it says it on both sides...

I also am interested in upgrading the speakers and possibly installing a subwoofer and power amp or powered subwoofer. I remember someone here installed a Bazooka tube. Don't know what size or whether it was powered or not. Anyone upgrade their sound system?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
    re: stereo setup

    -Replaced head unit with Kenwood
    -Did not change front seperates
-Replaced rear 4x6 with Polk Audio
-Tried to add subwoofer but didn't want to pay $279 for custom box x 2 + subwoofers and amp. Only custom box would fit.
-Added 10" self powered bazooka which rattled the truck on lowest setting...so changed to 8"
-Pretty satisfied...total cost with installation $1200. Would have liked to have kept 10" bazooka, but would have suffered hearing and brain damage...no amp required as head unit had enough output to drive 4 speakers.
  • danogdanog Member Posts: 318
Checkout Crutchfield and take a look a their custom sub boxes for under the rear seat installation. They are a bit high but they look great. I haven't done anything to mine yet, but I plan on changing the speakers in the rear for starters.

Anyone out there have the package that includes the wiring for the brake controller? If so is there an existing mounting plate for the controller? I looked @ mine and if it is the right plug (right above the parking brake) it looks like this is a mounting plate for it.

    Thanks
    Jarvus
  • kantonkanton Member Posts: 142
If you are talking about the plug under the dash directly above the parking brake that is the OBD-II port for your computer. NOT the place for your wiring harness.

    Kyle
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
either the 8" or the 10" will fit under the rear seat and was installed on the driver's side.
  • leavyleavy Member Posts: 34
From what I've read about it, the new C-Series will have a heavy duty version of the 4L60E trans that is offered in the 1/2 ton. Also the towing capacity will be greater than the standard 1/2 ton, but I'm not sure about how it compares to what the 3/4 ton can tow.

I doubt you'll be able to haul more, or have the off road capabilities (if you should want) that the regular 1/2 and 3/4 ton 4wd's offer.

Does anyone have any information on what would be changed between the 4L60E and the HD 4L60E, i.e., what's the weak link? I know it's early, but maybe there's some gearheads out there who already know...

I have the option and the harness that was in the glovebox, but no need to hook it up right now. Someone here posted in great detail and even has pictures on a web site (If I remember right) of their installation. It looked very good, but they did a lot of work on it and installed it in the compartment below the tape deck (if you have the bucket seats and console). Might be worth your while to scroll back through the millions of posts and find the links (you'll have to go back to topics 8, 9 or 10.) I'm guessing it was sometime in April when it was posted.

Great picture, Keith. My 5.3 also has Vortec on both sides just as in your posting. Does anyone have a 4.8 and can tell me how it looks different from the 5.3 in Keith's posting #657. I think every car and truck I have owned in the past has the liter, etc. in large print either on the air filter holder, valve covers, or some other location on top of the engine. It is very apparent that GM decided to not identify the Silverado engines in this manner. I guess another way of cutting cost and standardizing. Appreciate someone's help on how the 4.8 is different in appearance. Thanks. Bob
