Our sources show it as valid with a lease:

But, the dealer could be correct (or, not.. lol)

It is a customer incentive, so they can't "steal it", as it would show up on the lease paperwork. Try another dealer, and see what they say. There are at least eight dealers in your area, IIRC.

I'm low income, so when I factor in the $2,500 CA Clean air rebate +$2k additional for low income + $1,000 Edison rebate I'm coming out to nearly a free car.

Could you compare this to the purchase incentive from VW attached to financing through them? Last month, their purchase incentive was much better than the lease support.

If you purchase with the 2.90% APR 60 month financing, you still get the $1500 bonus
The dealer gets a $4000 incentive, instead of the $450

But, you would then be eligible for the Federal Tax Credit, if that is still a thing.

Assuming it's $7500, your total incentives are:
Purchase: $1500 + $4000 + $7500 (tax credit)
Lease: $1500 + $450 + $7500 (rebate)

Of course, if you purchase, you have to wait until next year to get the money back from the tax credit.

Thanks for this info. VW will really need to sweeten the deal for the lease for them to sell their inventory cars. The current lease numbers are just not working.

You don't have to wait very long for the tax credit. Yes, you don't get it right away as a lump sum. But you can fix your withholdings so the federal withholding goes to zero until you have compensated for the coming credit.

If you're in no rush, you should just wait.

$7500 is in lieu of the Federal tax credit (which you don't get, as a lessee)

Last week I leased a 2019 VW e-Golf SEL, Urano Gray. 3 yr / 10K miles per year. MSRP $39,925. Lease price of $34,150 before the $7,500 lease bonus. The lease price included $500 off based on VW offering a corporate discount based on my workplace. .00032 money factor. After the lease I applied for the $2,500 CVRP rebate (which is on a waitlist for any applications submitted 6/5 or later...) and the SCE $1,000 rebate. So far I am really enjoying the car. My first EV. And for good measure I got the windows tinted this past weekend. The car looks much better tinted!

I had the same experience as the previous MD poster with King VW. They were just very rude and unpleasant to work with. Drove down the road to Ourisman VW in Bethesda, met with Katherine, and the entire experience was pleasant. In and out in a few hours.

The car itself is very nice. Not as fast or as much range as a Tesla, but a lot cheaper. And it has CarPlay/Android Auto!
