lmeyer1 - thanks for the info on the hitch ramp. interesting product. However, I think the 2x8's someone mentioned is more cost effective. :-)
The trucks wiring harness you splice\insert the aftermarket wiring adapter into was designed for a certain load. I'm sure the additional wire length and additional bulbs are exceeding what the circuit was designed to handle.
The aftermarket hitch may be cheaper but it is not the whole package.
My concern with getting the towing package was that in order to get the wiring harness, it seemed that I would also have to forfeit a gentler ride for the 95% of the time that I won't be pulling anything. (Its true that the ride is be stiffer with the package, right?)

If noththing else, they're fun to mess around with.
It arrived promptly and I installed last night. It is 3/4 inch foam covering tailagate, bed and interior walls. The fit is almost precise, however at the rear of the sides it is not completely snug.
The plusses to me are it is easily removable for cleaning (one sided tape a very strong velcor type attachment on the other), it is definitley water repellent (I tried to drown the sample peice in a jar of water and it would not absorb a drop);it is soft and fills in the ridges to the point that I could sleep on it); it actually looks better than I anticipated (charcoal); it's design leads me to beleive it will protect the bed from spillages as well as weight drops.
The minuses to me are that it comes in two parts, bed/tailgate and sides/bulkhead which one zips together prior to install. The zipper lead itself is rather large and terminates facing the bed, I taped it up but there is potential for scratching; I opted to remove the cargo holders and reattch after install, and the bottom bolts on the rear holders are right up against the zipper and I had to be real careful when cutting out not to ruin the zipper itself.
Bottom line to me is that it is a nice compromise over a drop or spray in and is warranted for the life of my ownership. Time will tell.
I basically went through the buy-vehicle process on stoneage.com and took a printout of what I could get the vehicle for off the web. When the salesman asked me if their initial price offer was okay I said no and handed him the sheet detailing what I wanted to pay, and they matched it.
While I ended up needing to cancel my order and getting an acceptably matching vehicle via dealer-trade, the dealer I bought from maintained the cost relationship (dealer invoice + a little in fees that I couldn't talk them out of).
Cheers.

This has been a fun and helpful place to keep in a QUAD mood (or is that mode?) during my wait! Thanks for all the advice and help.
I remember that a few months ago Carorder was selling well below invoice. Unfortunately, that's changed. In my area, they can't even match what my dealer has offered. And they now charge ad fees.
1) "cobwebs", sorry I shouldn't assume you know what I mean. The engine doesn't sputter, but there isn't any real pick-up until I push the gas pedal down aways. Then once I do that the one or two times, any slight change in pushing the gas pedal towards the floor results in some nice acceleration. But the occasionally the first couple of times I want to accelerate after starting the vehicle I need the press the gas pedal a lot further than I normally do.
2) Gas quality: I've been buying 87 octane from Mobile Gas stations. I know I pay a little more, but I've never had the issue of poor quality gas. Plus gas purchases go on the Mobile card and becomes a separate monthly payment that's easy to keep track of.
I'm wondering, should I let the vehicle idle for a minute after initial start-up? I usually start the truck, buckle-up, put it in gear and go. No waiting for the engine to warm-up. Could this be the issue, since the lack of acceleration power only seems to happen when I first start the truck after it's been sitting for a while.
I've received good install service, and he told me that I have free minor repairs. Not sure if this is standard since I've read in other forums that the spray-in liners are not easy to repair. Anyhow, I'm happy with my choice.
Oh, yeah. Almost forgot. He put a Rhino Liner advertisement plug in my reciever hitch. I looked at it, and I think I can pop the cover off and remove his advertisement and put in my own color printout. Cool bonus, I think. :-)
For me, I always fill it up when I'm half empty. That way, I'm spending around $20 and it doesn't seem so bad. Still doing a lot of "round town" stuff and getting 15+ - 16+ mpg on 87 octane. Also have 4.7, 4x4, 5 sp.
msjaycee - get in touch with Pam or Brigitte at [www.bennyboyd.com] and tell them that Jack from Midland wants them to walk you through the 'Quad' process. They are superior 'helpers.' ;-)
impy2 - you're right (and you're welcome).
newquad - yeah, one of those hex looking thingies like you use to work on Macs. No biggie, most basic toolkits and magnetic screwdrivers seem so have em these days.

I'm trying to decide whether to keep the T&H package on my 2001. Ride is more important to me than handling.
SYNTHETIC REAR DIFF LUBE:
Read a previous post on what synthetic to use that will not void the warranty... I simply go with the Mopar synthetic.
4.7 / 5.9 CHARACTERISTICS:
Had a chance to drive a 4.7 QC 4X4... Very nice! Interestingly, though it lacked some of the low-end grunt of my 5.9, it actually seems to out-perform the 5.9 at higher speeds!
I love the 5.9 and the "old-fashioned" trans for my purposes... But I must say that I evy you 4.7 guys when I pull up to the gas pump!!
FACTORY TOW PACKAGE:
Personal opinion... I wouldn't haul anything over about 2500 lbs without a towing pack and HD Service Group.
I happen to have an enclosed tandem-axle trailer which weighs in at about 2,200 lbs. (without cargo). The law requires tandems to have brakes.
On the Ram, the Tekonsha electronic brake controller plugged right into the existing factory harness. When I got the Quad, I pulled the controller from beneath the the Ram dash, leaving the wiring intact. I'll be taking the QC in next week... Guys at the trailer outlet will plug in a new wiring ($15)... A whole lot better than paying $100 for an entirely new unit!
WHITE PAINT:
I was reminded once again why I selected Bright White for the QC (as I did on the '95 Ram).
In detailing the Ram for sale, the entire top edge of the tailgate was rubbed raw to the metal by and ill-fitting rear window on the cap.
I popped for a spray can of Duplicolor to match and a can of Duplicolor clear-coat to top it off.
The finished job was an EXACT match, indestiguishable from the factory finish.
Used to do custom paint for a living while I was in college... Love the looks of those metallics! But they're downright scary when it comes to touch-up!
Nuff said... Loving this truck!!!
Didn't see 1988, sounds like I missed some fun.
Cobwebs, pickup, whatever. Colbates, I think I might know the symptom that you are describing, and yes, it does sound as though the truck is stumbling a little when cold. I don't think that you need to warm the truck up too much when starting (though that never hurts), but you do need to realize that these are big engines and it takes a while for the oil to get moving and the heat to build up to operating temperature.
You may find it necessary to rev the engine a little more for the first minute or so of driving, and then it should settle down. Often this problem can be made to show itself in a manual by just using the clutch at the start - i.e. using only idle revs, especially if you start by reversing.
So, if it what I think it is, it isn't a problem, just a common characteristic of cold engines. I would recommend warming the engine before running in cold weather by the way.

I guess the SKIM is like the F-150's key with some type of chip in it. Anyone know?
What does I/P mean? (I forgot to ask)
I have a clunk in the front end when pulling up to a stop and when I turn the wheel sometimes
It does not do it all the time though. I have inspected it visually and see nothing obvious.
Any ideas? I would like to have an idea of what the problem is before I take it back in for service. Other than this small problem the truck has been great!!! I have a Red Sport 4.7, auto
3.55 lsd tow pkg. and lots of other goodies.
My mileage seems to stay in the 15-17 range no matter what I do. It really tows my 6x10 enclosed motorcycle trailer well. One of my riding buddies was so impressed he is looking at one now!
Has anyone investigated further? Does the airbag light illuminate when the fuse is removed? Has anyone removed the fuse and driven into a tree, did the airbag activate? How are the switches for the airbags on the Regular and Club cab wired? Do the wiring diagrams for the Club and regular cab differ from the QC?
My 9 year old really wants to cruise around in the "shotgun" seat. I am afraid "shotgun" may be too accurate a description of an airbag exploding in his face.
I understand the rear seats are safer (in every car, and always have been.)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
1500 miles under the belt on QC Sport with T&H
package. I keep hearing about how great the ride quality is but I have to say that my only disapointment has been the ride. Asphalt seems fine but I seem to get a great deal of bump and bed flex on concrete highway. I realize that I am not driving a sedan but I expected a slightly smoother ride. Should I investigate aftermarket rear bars. I would have preferred SLT but this was the only one left in the area with the other features I wanted. Any Ideas?

I would assume that the center console is the one between the bucket seats and floor console is the one that contains the 4 wheel drive shifter (I don't know how the 4x2 looks).

No drive train changes that I was told about, but anything could happen.
When I asked about the 2001 changes, they were just opening their 2001 update binder from Dodge. They even made me a copy of the sheet. I was told I just missed the order deadline for the first run of quads (closed jun 2 or 4th can't remember). So the next build date would be Jul 26th. It's going to be rough waiting so long.
I can't remember all the items on the inspection list, but the bed appears to be properly aligned and the door mouldings appear to be stable. What else should I check for? Thanks in advance.
Almost had the ChildSeat Tethers installed yesterday...Apparently they found out that they had ordered the WRONG part but only after i had dropped the truck off at 7:30am and AFTER they took apart the back seat to install them...Like i said...Not to Bright....
Im no Pro mechanic or anything, but the FIRST thing i do before i start ANYTHING is make sure i have ALL the tools needed, make sure i have the CORRECT parts and READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING...Apparently they ordered the ones for the Ram Quad Cab which it said in BIG BOLD LETTERS right on the front of the installation sheet....
I think D/C installed the same "DIM" light bulb they use in the keyring into these mechanics for a BRAIN....Needless to say it wont be back up there for any maintenance work again....
I was sure to tell the owner, sales manager, and the salesman the their service department will most likely cost them any future sales to me...Its a darn shame because their sales department is A-1, 5-Star, ALL THE WAY...
Anyway, The truck is great and drives like a dream... 4.7L, 3.55, 5sp, 4x4, T&H, Buckets, and all goodies except the HIGH PRICE radio and Towing package...Instead i installed a REESE (#44018) 1-piece welded hitch, and an
ALPINE CDA-D855 CD Player with Dancing-Light display & Remote...
Everyone Keep Qadding and Posting..

Expecting a delivery from the stork in November and the WS6 Trans-Am ain't gonna cut it as far as strapping a child in the rear seat and lifting them in and out...Can you say BACK-STRAIN!!!!
She's been eying the PEARL INTENSE BLUE pretty hard....Hope it will still be available in the 2001 line up...I guess it will be a nice compliment to my Flame Red Sport in the Garage...
Anyway, does anyone know for sure if the 2001 Durangos are available for order now...I figure that they are since the dakotas are..Havent called around yet..

Almost 1000 miles and I like this truck more and more. The ride is still great, and even better when fully loaded with firewood and camping gear.
Gas milage has been averaging mostly in the 13 - 14 mpg range with 75% highway driving, although I did hit 15.5 once.
Complaint 1, (minor). The trip odometer. I like to use it to gauge distance to travel to a particular stop and I like to have it constantly visible, not a toggle between T.O. and regular odometer. Also, because of where I position the steering wheel, it is hidden from view. Maybe I'm old fashioned but I wish it was a dual odometer positioned within the speedometer.
Complaint 2, (minor). Placement of the cupholders.
I believe that with a little more thought on placement of the power outlets/cigar lighter, Dodge could have had the cup holder come out of the dash. The way it is now, it is unusable if a 3rd person is sitting in the front, (not very common here), but more importantly, it is right next to the seat so that if your coffe cup has been overfilled, there's a good chance that it will splash back onto the seat. I keep a facecloth draped over the middle part of the seat to prevent that from happening.
Whine: I went over a small curb, (rounded asphalt) and the front end went out of alignment, Its going in Wed to the dealer to be fixed. I wonder if something wasn't tightened properly at the factory
Other than that no other problems.
Story:
Lat night my wife took the truck to the supermarket at about 10. I asked her
to park away from everyone else which she did, the only car near her was one
directly in front of her, but separated from the QC by a big travel lane that
runs between the parking rows.
As she returns to the Quad after shopping she sees that the white car that had
been parked across from her is gone.
While she is putting the groceries in, an older gentleman who was doing
the shopping cart retrieval comes up to her and tells her that he saw the car
hit the truck.
So now, she is looking all over the truck to see where the damage
is and the guy says to her 'is ok, you got biiiig truck, was little car, no hurt truck'
She keeps looking and he must think she's getting upset, (she was nervous!), so he keeps repeating
'no problem, biiiig truck, little car' then he shows her pieces of the car's
tailight that
were on the ground in front of the Quad, all the while saying 'biiiig truck, little car, you ok, car not'
Now, while all this is happening, a couple comes walking to their car, located
a few parking spaces away from the quad. They are both carrying bags of
groceries and, although the wife stopped at their car, her husband just kept
walking past it, over to my wife with his bags still in his hand. He comes over
and starts saying
'Wow! Now this is a truck! This is a big truck!' His wife is standing at their
car, groceries in her hands waiting fo him to unlock the doors and he's looking
into the back of the quad, ('cause my wife had the door open from loading the groceries).
He yells to his wife 'Wow! Now this is a truck !' and then starts
talking to Sandy, 'This is a truck ! this must have set you back a lot, what did
this cost 35 grand, 40 grand' The guy's wife starts yelling at him about why is
he asking her the price of the truck, its none of his business, and he keeps saying
'Wow! This is a truck, this is a big truck', and at the same time, the shopping cart guy is still saying to my wife, 'is ok, biiiig truck, little car'.
So, when the show was all over, it turns out that the shopping cart guy was able to
write down the license plate of the car, (apparently he sees those things pretty
regularly in his job there).
Of course when my wife got home I HAD to go outside with the flashlight and check it
out. All the lights were fine, I only found a barely visible, < 5 inches long, rub mark on the
lower passenger side,(which is where the car's taillight pieces were), of the
front bumper.
I figured that I was witnessing uneven tire wear so I did what I did. I agree that too low of pressure will wear the edges more and reduce gas mileage.
