I understand your reasoning, but in the unfortunate event that the new car is stolen or totaled during the lease, you'll lose that up front money.

And, it doesn't change the true cost of the lease, in the end.

Totally understand the loss of money in those situations. If I were to do this again, I would probably put the $2k down on a CC to pay it off and have the higher monthly car payment. This is actually something that I did a ton of research on ahead of time and still had a brain fart and put the money down on the car instead! Anyway, picked up the car Wed. night, Silver Pyrite DSG S and love it so far. Selling price was just under $23k before taxes etc. - $2k down, 12k/year, 39 months - payment is $323 and about $26 of that is the unfortunate Chicago lease tax. I'm coming from a 2017 Civic LX hatch and the GLI is quite an upgrade, especially considering the selling price vs. a comparable Civic. This is also my first VW after having basically only driven Honda's for ~20 years.

May be a local bank or CU financing the lease, not VW Credit.

Dealer can't alter the residual value - it's fixed by the bank.
