Went to local Volvo dealer to get a term sheet on 2020 V60 CC T5 @ 36/10K lease...his MF/res.% was 0.00099/54 vs Edmunds 0.00041/55. When asked about higher MF, salesperson asked where did I get the 0.00041 figure, which I told him. Response was that “it was set by the finance company” and couldn’t be changed. What does one do in this sort of situation?

Find another dealer, unless you’re not using Volvo’s financing. I have found the numbers here to always be correct. They are marking up the numbers to fatten the deal. Like I said I would find another dealer, who knows what else they’re being slippery on.

Well, there may be another questionable calculation here, as the salesperson computed sales tax due on the selling price, exactly in the manner of a straight purchase. WA Dept. of Revenue guidelines call for sales tax imposed on “capital cost reduction”, i.e., down payment, first lease payment, and every succeeding lease payment for the term of the agreement, with all monthly payments based upon difference of leasing price minus residual.

But, by keeping the lease calculations hidden, they can keep you from knowing why the payment is what it is.

Why do the numbers not match up?
a) the dealer is quoting a different model year, trim, term or mileage allowance (or some combination of). Because residuals cannot be altered by the dealer. If the communication is verbal or written, and not part of the lease worksheet or contract, it could be a simple typo or mistake.
b) For money factors, all of the above, but most likely, they are just marking up the rate for extra profit. Regardless of what they might say.
