recently. I installed the Edelbrock IAS shocks and BFGoodrich VelvetRide Shackles on my 2K GMC Sierra SLE, smooth-ride suspension, reg cab, 2wd a couple of weeks ago. I am glad I did. No, it still does not ride like a Caddy, but has improved quite a bit. A bonus seems to be that the rear anti-lock doesn't seem to be as sensitive as it was. This could be the more supple rear suspension action keeping the tires in better contact with the road. In my opinion, the shackles seemed to have more effect than the shocks, but both were worth the time and money. I paid $228 for the shocks from carparts.com (before the $27 rebate) with their 1/3 off coupon for first-time buyers. The shackles were $173 with 2-day shipping.
my people - or use the 30% off Car Parts coupons in a lot of car magazines(in front of me now I am looking at Hot Rod July and August 2000 for 30% off, and Corvette Fever September 2000 with a $50 off coupon from Car Parts. Current Auto Week has ad to "see your Edelbrock dealer" for $27 rebate, or visit www.edelbrock.com/shocks. I got them delivered for $220.87 about 6 weeks ago, without the $27 rebate. Every time I contacted Car Parts I got a different price. If you want them, get them now before the price goes up again. For the price, it's an inexpensive experiment - not much more than a night out for diner and dancing with DQ. Regarding velvets, I ditto white 6 above. I don't have a locker but the rear tires have better traction (prone to laying a little rubber if you're not careful, especially with the powerful V6 I have)- my theory is that the rubber bushings in the shackles absorb some of the empty pickup bounce and reduce wheel hop. Improved handling, not improved ride, is the biggest effect I noticed with the IAS/velvet combo. Although the ride is more comfortable, it is not improved as much as the handling/traction is improved. It's still a truck and rides like one, but it rides much better than the 2000 Yukon I drove recently. Ride is a very subjective thing, but everybody agrees on better handling. My $.02.
ryan, got the truck today, first 01' to leave my dealers lot of trucks or cars. you asked about the door handles. they are the same as 00'. I must say that the new "tan" interior is 110% better than the "medium oak" of past. "tan" is the way it is listed on the sticker. it is a lot lighter than the medium oak. I am very pleased. the only cosmetic difference that i have noticed so far is under the hood. The Vortec intake manifold cover is not square cornered and rectangular. It is almost 'domed' and alot more rounded. Got a little over 100 miles on it and no noises / vibes as of yet. Keepin my fingers crossed. By the way for those interested, my truck was built in Oshawa Ontario, the week of june 26th. I got a 2001 LT EXT CAB Z71, with a 3.73 locker, Z82, and P265 WOL, and an engine block htr for $30. I got carmine red solid, with tan interior.. Worlds apart from my 94 F-150, happy to switch. pat
great truck, glad your happy with it....you should have better luck since your's came from Canada. It's the ones manufactured at Ft. Wayne that you really got to watch out for....
congradulations on the '01. hope you have all trouble free miles, and if you have time , give an update as the miles roll by. chevy is more than likely got right by now. customer of mine had one of the first trucks (ck style) back in the 80's and after 3 engines and one tranny it's been great. yours being 3rd yr. production is more than likely gonna be like a rock like chevy advertizes.
Again, congratulations on the new truck. My 99 was built at the Canadian factory. Minor problem with the driver's side window rattling but other than that, it's been a great truck.
My 2wd LT 1500 is very stable under all conditions. It does not ride nice empty on certain roads where the length of the wheelbase matches the strange parabola shaped freeway sections (makes for quite a bouncy ride at times), but putting on a shell smoothes that out. My guess is that lowering rear tire pressure or changing to different shocks may do the same thing. Never have I felt anything other than solid control, however.
I think babs is getting a big head here...ever since he started new topics he just ain't the same man...like he knows more than Flares and nerf bars now?....(his staff actually does all the work)
I you are not satisfied with your truck please email me the details of your ownership experience. I will post them to a web site devoted to problems with GM trucks and will also forward to several people in GM management. Maybe if they continually get these emails, they will be forced to retrofit ALL trucks with fixes incorporated into the 2001 design.
Do you have e-mail addresss to anyone at GM that can tell us why they put those braces(stabilizer bars) and a redesigned trans. cross member on the '01 2wd x-cab?
I always posted the fact that my truck came from Ft. Wayne, Indiana. And that it shakes, vibrates, and has aftershocks. I usually will also make a point that I've driven two awesome, vibrationless, and generally well built trucks that came out of Canada. When I do that, I'll usually get a post out of Ryan that his is from Ft. Wayne and he has no vibrations. Seems to work most of the time just like post #685. Ryan's truck probably is vibrationless, but it is also shiftless....

You are still allowed to post? Meredith didn't give you the axe also? By any chance is she your Mom? Don't take it personally. Just had to ask as red would say...LOL
Do you have any power numbers or ranges for the 6.0 alternative fuels engines? This is the first information I've seen on them, except for the fact that they were coming out. How about prices? Thanks.
Oops wrong web address...I dotted when I should have slashed..try it now.

Is it possible that GM will retrofit the new braces on our "SHAKERADOS"? My service advisor, who came up empty-handed with info from his engineer pal, said that these changes wouldn't be done to prior vehicles. They know there's a problem, but won't even help us, their customers who paid darn good money for these trucks with problems that evidently were noticed back in '99-did they just not want to lose us to the other manufacturers?
Well, I was actually hoping for more specific information on the alternative fuels versions of the 6.0L. But I appreciate the information you have posted. I would imagine that what I'm looking for isn't available yet. Thanks.
i'm down. you could call it "silverado solutions". of course, the solutions would be for problems like: "my kegerator isn't staying cold enough...anyone have any ideas?"
What design problems? Mine has none, Tim's has none, Ryan's has none. Design changes occur to improve thiungs, but that doesn't mean the old design was bad. I wouldn't want the '69 Camaro design changes placed on my '67, even though it is a better design overall.
You can't get "problems" fixed on the older models when there is no proof that the older models have a problem.
I highly doubt it is a widespread "DESIGN" problem on every silverado. It seems that way in here but there are hundreds upon hundreds of people out there with a 99-00 (now 01) silverado and have no problems. Some are just unfortunate and do have problems. I know my truck isnt perfect (there isnt a one out there) damn dash rattle is still there but i have a quick fix (pound on dash haha) when it starts so that will work until middle of august when i have vacation and can take it in.
No there isn't a design problem on all Silverados, just the ones with the rack and pinion. Also the 2wd trucks have no torsion bar. GM has added stabilizer bars under the cab to assist in cab and frame flexing on the '01 2wd xcabs. ricsch is asking if GM is planning on retrofitting the '99 and '00 models with the same stabilizers. As far as whether all 2wd '99 and '00 xcabs have frame flexing and vibration problems, I would say they do. The reason it is not widespread is due to the fact that:
1-GM is not going public 2-Service managers are telling the owners that "they all do that" which is true. 3-Service techs saying "cannot duplicate problems" 4-Public is uninformed and accept truck "as is" and maybe even normal for a truck.
The current TSB out to replace the rack and pinion is by VIN. That means a truck automatically qualifies for the TSB to change out the rack whether or not it is causing a problem as GM has determined that these identified trucks do have an over sensitive rack and pinion. Dealer should perform the TSB no questions asked. But we know better don't we.

There is proof of the design flaw in the 2wd xcab Silverados. The question is whether an owner wants to go through buyback or trade in. I think that it is wishful thinking on ricsch's part to ask if GM would add on the stabilizers to the '99 and '00 to create a more solid truck. I myself do not believe GM would do anything that would cost them that much money. Not without a fight anyway.
ryan your transmission problem is intermittent. There are folks that have posted that it turns from intermittent to occur with regularity after awhile. Best part that they mention is that there is no fix out from GM at this point and time. Sure glad I don't have that problem as I would rather have vibrations than have the trans drop out of gear when passing someone and have an 18 wheeler staring down your throat as someone had posted. There is a difference between being anal like cwmartin and having a genuine concern for vibrations on a vehicle you spent $30k on...my $.02 on Friday 21 July 2000.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME THE BEST WAY TO START THE BUY-BACK PROCESS ON MY SILVERADO? IS ANYONE USING THE # IN THE BACK OF OWNERS MANUAL? G.M. BBB.LINE!I MIGHT GET MY TRUCK BACK TOMARROW FROM THE DEALERSHIP. JON HALL CHEVY IN DAYTONA BCH.FL. THEY REPLACED MY GOODYEAR WRANGLER ST TIRES--AGAIN. FULL SET. THEY SAY IT IS FIXED--FOR THE FIFTH TIME. I HAVE FILE # WITH GM.--BUT THEY SOUND LIKE WAL-MART GREETERS.
My 1500 Z71 was made in Pontiac Michigan. Only problem is the steering column rattle, which they fixed once by replacing the intermediate F-shaft. It worked good at the time, but rattle returned after about 10,000 miles. No vibes though. Seems put together pretty well.
hearing a while back about ryan..and he was putting it into drive and gave it gas and it didnt do anything then all of a sudden it jump and chirped the tires somewhat? and went right along
well i have a '99 z-71...every once in a while..it feels like when i pull up to a stop light..wait for it to turn.then go..that it stays in 2nd gear because i can give it gas and it really doesnt respond, then all of a sudden it jumps, like it forgot to downshift all the way to first. It has done this maybe 3 or 4 times. It just feels like it doesnt downshift fully to first or something then when you went to take off it hesitates like still in second gear and all of a sudden it jumps to first in a jerking motion seeing that i am giving it gas and goes.
Maybe an aftermarket stall converter would help. Sounds like a torque converter problem and not the trans. If it is the trans, the 4L60E is electronically controlled so maybe some reprogramming is in order?
To test the stall on your current torque converter:
With the engine running and the brake pedal held down firmly with your left foot. Place the truck in drive and depress the accelerator fully to the floor (WOT) with your right foot for two to three seconds. Your stall speed will be the maximum RPM shown on the tach.
I was trying to find the best deal out there on a set of Westin CPS step bars for my '00 Ext. Cab truck and came up with TPCARGUY.COM. Their price for the step bars (part# 26-1680) is $343.94 (No tax to CA and free shipping) Has anyone had any experience with this vendor? Does anyone have any other suggestions? AtlantaAuto.Com came in at $356.60 and ThePartsSource.Com @ $369.95 both with no tax to CA and free shipping. BTW - I got all these links from the Westin website.
>There is proof of the design flaw in the 2wd xcab Silverados.<
That's what mine is. What problem am I supposedly having, since as a design problem all must have it? I have not had any of the symptoms mentioned, and I have 13,000 miles so far.
I'm not asking this to be a jerk, but I have noticed nothing wrong. Seems to me that, since the majority sold are 2wd xcab models there would be some press about it. At the very least, I should notice it.
Is a site available that can keep up with these announcements. My truck is a Fort Wayne (have a half on half off Indiana sticker on door). Was having trouble many posts ago with bouncing or vibrating front. They replaced tires Wrangler ST twice finally installed Wrangler Rt/S 255/70 which helped alot. Been just accepting feel since reminds me of all the reg cabs both short and long beds that have had on the farm for years.
Sorry the only people with that kind of access is the dealer. Does your VIN fall prior to the ones that I had posted? If it does, and you're looking for a more solid, vibrationless truck...here is the opportunity.
I know this was covered before, in some depth but how many zerks are there on a E CAB 4x4, with 5.3. i remember reading about it here but it was a while ago. i also seem to remember there is one tough to get to, that people tend to miss. pat
check out the following address for your zerks. i have a '00 z71, ls 5.3 - these are pics of where they are...email me at kwerking@aol.com if you have questions....
the trucks manufactured after those VINs. Some will dispute that though...example...my VIN does not qualify. After inspecting my truck, the dealer says I need the kit installed as it hasn't been done. Someone also said trucks manufactured prior to 1/24/00 also qualify. My truck was manufactured 7/99.
