Had I not come out of a TL, I might agree. The car should just be geared a little higher with all the torque it has...it revs too much on the highway. My S2000 will pull high 20's on a highway trip all day long. Voice commands are ok for a specific address, but just a band-aid. Like you said, it's tied into a speed sensor somewhere...so it won't be easy to bypass.
  • johninnjjohninnj Member Posts: 243
I think more what was confirmed is that steve misunderstood what was meant by "Paddles". The sport will absolutely shift either up or down at ANY time with it's paddles. Consider that full confirmation.
  • black00black00 Member Posts: 48
    Johninnj,
I read your posts again (got confused by Steve's posts) and so it's confirmed that it actually works just like in our RDX. Truth is, as much as like the paddle shifters, I drive in D most of the time, but I love to be able to just give a quick tap on the left paddle for a quick downshift when I need to speed up for whatever reason and then just let it go back to D on its own (I hate to floor the gas for a downshift). To do the same on my A4 I have to take my right hand of the wheel, throw the shifter to the side and pull for a downshift. Too much work :P
  • johninnjjohninnj Member Posts: 243
I def agree. I think mine has been in full man mode three or four times in 4 months. I quick up or down shift with a flick is usually all it takes. Seemed to bang shifts a little firmer / quicker when in full man mode...but not enough for make up for the extra time to even take your hands off the wheel. How do you like the rdx? Girlfriend's pilot lease is up soon and I love the interior. Infiniti has that bubble-back G thing coming out to compete...should be interesting.
  • steverestevere Member Posts: 14
So what exactly are paddle shifters? I clearly have my terms wrong - I figured that they were similar to what my g35x has - lets you pretend you are doing a manual shift.
  • black00black00 Member Posts: 48
    Stevere,
The paddles do the same thing as your main shifter, but they're more convenient and fun.
    Go here:
    http://www.infiniti.com/g_sedan/photos/interior_photos.html

The last interior photo is a close-up of the right paddle shifter. There another one on left of the wheel for downshifts. F1 style! These are getting very popular - a lot of cars are getting them...

    Johninnj,
I love the RDX, it's an awesome small SUV and I definitely recommend it. It handles amazingly, just like a car.
Love the looks too, by far the prettiest out there IMO.

    Check this out:

Faster than the X3 and 10K less when similarly equipped.
  • steverestevere Member Posts: 14
Thanks for the information, i now see what they are. Mine does not have these.
  • johninnjjohninnj Member Posts: 243
Pretty neat...I never knew that since I usually use the paddles, just letter them override D. I was playing with it last night....seems like it wants to hold the gears MUCH longer in SD. Seems like it might not want to let the torque converter lock up at cruising speed also. Update on paddles overriding "D", it seems the length of time it stays in forced manual mode depends on the situation...it apparently decides why you flipped the paddle and acts accordingly I got it to be as little as 5 secs and as long as like 20.
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
X, as far as I knew (Where's scott?) does not have paddles.

    LOL.... Sorry, was on vacation.
Drove the family from Boston to Chicago in the MDX.
Ya know, I did it twice before when the MDX was still mine.
After getting used to the G, the (now) wife's MDX is like a torture chamber... I was SO uncomfortable.

The G35x does NOT have paddle shifts in the 07 model.
    The 08 G35x Sport (should)

Currently, you need an 07 G35S for paddles and yes, they will work in D, DS and M mode.
Using the paddles in D mode kicks the cars into a temporary DS mode, which is why it holds gears differently depending on the situation, just like in DS mode.
  • johninnjjohninnj Member Posts: 243
I hear you on the torture. TL to girlfriend's pilot wasn't so bad. Now G to pilot is like a big sloppy suburban. That's partly why I put 1200 miles on the G last week (Also on vacation!!)

Test drove an Infiniti G35 Journey last week and have almost decided that this will be my next car.

We were so overwhelmed by all great features of the interior and by the graphics on the Nav System's map (so much better than the Acura ones!) that I forgot to check to see if it has some of the other features that I use on my current Nav System. So, does the G35's Nav System have a calendar and calculator?

When you search for a business by name, does it display the phone number of the business - and can it dial the number automatically using the bluetooth system? (my current car displays the number, but has not bluetooth)

I'd really appreciate the answers to my questions and any comments you have about the nav system.
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
Why don't you check out the Infiniti G35 Navigation System forum on Edmund's website? If you think the Infiniti Nav system is great, have you looked at the Nav for the IS or ES Lexus? In my opinion, it's far superior to Infiniti's.

Additionally, since you are not an owner, you can go to http://www.nissantechinfo.com/infiniti/deptog.asp?dept_id=56
to view the G35 Owners manual.

I do not "think" it has a calendar or calculator - at least I've never seen one.

But YES, you can search by a business name and it will display the phone number AND it will dial the number using blue tooth. I needed the ford dealer to ask about a part, i just typed in the name of the business, it quickly found it, and provided me instructions to drive there and the phone #. Hit dial and poof, i was talking to them.

I personally LOVE the navigation system. I can't speak about the Honda or Lexus, but it is way better than the Ford or GM versions, and it is even better than the $2100 Pioneer system we got for our truck - the bird's eye view just makes the entire experience amazing - like you are flying in a low-flying airplane and can see all around you - in 3d.

Bottom line, if you get this car, make sure you get all the electronics. The prices Infiniti charges are actually amazing, considering the integration and how well things are put together - you can't even come close to it from 3rd party - i should know, we did it on our truck. It is nice, but you just do not have the seamless integration you get on the infiniti - everything is nicely tied together - the A/C, radio, xm radio, navigation, bluetooth, the works.

I loved the car when i first was driving, and fell in love with the electronics after i owned the car for a bit.

if you have any other questions, please ask. sw@reddoch.com

Hey is anyone else having problems with the quality of the cell phone connections using bluetooth? My friends cant stand it when I use the bluetooth. I have to use my handset directly and then the quality is much better. Is it my cellphone?
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
I had major concerns on the Bluetooth quality in the G.
Coming from an Acura MDX which had superb Bluetooth quality, I found by reading reviews on previous years of the G, that the Bluetooth stunk.... badly.

I have an 07 and I have never had a complaint.
My wife says that she can tell that she's on speaker (couldn't tell in the MDX) but that it still sounds clear and static free.

No problems or complaints... linked to the Moto Razr V3m

I had a little accident in the kitchen last night and like a complete moron, I tried catching a knife which was falling off the counter.... the knife won.

I wrapped my hand the best I could (don't wanna bleed in my beautiful G) and hopped in the car to get myself to the hospital for some quick stitch work.

I built my house almost 5 years ago but this is a new area for me and although I have an idea where the hospital is, I wasn't 100% sure, as it takes back roads to access the parking lot... a lot of them being one way.

I hit Dest -> Nearby Places and was stunned to find that Hospital was not in the list of 5 options...
Restaurant, ATM, Hotel, Gas Station and Rest Stop.

I found my way but today, wanted to get to the bottom of this severe shortcoming in the Navi unit.

If you go into Settings, you can access and modify this list from an available list of 10 items... Hospital being one of them.
I replaced Rest Stop with Hospital... we all know what goes down at Rest Stops and I never have plans on needing one, if you know what I mean.

I suggest others do the same.
If there was ever a real emergency, the nearest Hospital should be one button push away... not 2 minutes within the Settings menu.

Thanks for the tip...with the "Movement lockout", it's important to get all these setting right. Sorry about your hand...I'm sure you could have gotten some help int he rest area...nice happy ending or something ! ! !

It's somewhat of a crap shoot for me using the bluetooth-Several friends and family, who I talk to on their cell phones, have told me the quality is poor and they couldn't hear me well. However, it appears that any call to a LAN Line will come across just fine as I haven't had any problems communicating with the person on the other line in those instances.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Ouch, Scott, how's your hand now?? Good tip, though, thanks for suggesting it.

Well, the included First Aid kit which comes with the G35 is actually pretty nice.
I opened it for the first time this morning.

I brought it into my office and used the included scissors & tweezers to remove the stiches from my hand, helping me to avoid the unnecessary trip to the Dr's office.

    :P ;)

scott just updated my navi to include hospitals on that screen . thanks for the tip-- what about infiniti putting a hot button for emergency like we see in MB's.. (if only the hosts were as helpful as you)-- :P

Hello, i was hoping someone could answer this question for myself and others. I have noticed that the "un-lock" portion of the button on the 2007 g35 is NOT illuminated but the "lock" portion of the same button is. Is this a defect or does infiniti not illuminate the un-lock portion of the button on the g35? Thank you in advance for the answer/s

It's been 4 days and no one responded so i thought i would try posting it here.
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
What can I help you with? :)
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
JBourne... I've seen your question and keep telling myself to check this for you, but once I get in my car, I completely forget.

I'll run out at lunch and check this for you... if I don't forget! :P
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
    Okay... better late than never.

My button is illuminated, but only on the front lock portion of the switch.
The unlock sideof the switch is not illuminated.

    Wonder why that is. :confuse:

scottm123, Thank you for your reply, I hope your hand is better and it will heal well. i'm sure a lot of people are wondering the same thing, i know i was. I suppose it's a cost cutting effort on infiniti, at least now i know that i do not have to go into the dealership for a "problem" that really wasn't. It's a very minor "issue" for a car that i throughly enjoy driving, my other main concern is trying to keep the car front looking the same the day i bought it with all the debris on the road. Again thank you for your reply.
  • littlewonderlittlewonder Member Posts: 20
Man is that a pretty car! I could only sit in it, as it was on loan to the dealer from Infinity and they aren't allowed to let anyone test drive it yet. The interior is quite similar to the G35x but the roof line is lower and back seat is appropriate only for short people. (I'm 5'1 and my head barely cleared the cealing.

I opted for 3M protection on the front end... no longer a concern (minus the chrome grille)

I am considering purchasing an Infiniti (2007 G35X), but am concerend b/c there is no dealer in my area. I don't mind travelling the 1.5 hrs to buy the vehicle, but am worried about getting it serviced after the sale. There are Nissan dealers in my area. Could they do it or will I have to drive the 1.5 hrs every time I need service that is covered under the warranty? I am sure I can find a local garage to handle non warranty service. Other ideas?
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
I had the exact same concerns and came close to a TL for this reason.
After driving the G, it's worth the drive for warranty service!

My dealer is 70 miles away, but it's about a 90 minute drive.
    I've been there 3 times.
Once for a test drive, once to pick up the car, and once for the first oil change, as I was getting the sunroof TSB taken care of at the same time.

I can get oil changes from the local Nissan dealer and after warranties have expired, I have a great mechanic local to me, who I trust.

In the meantime, I'm loving my G and only head into the dealer for warranty items.
Next visit will be in a few months, to get the upgraded key fobs.

If you haven't driven one yet, do so.
It's worth the drive into the dealership, if necessary.

Just got my new G-35. Literature says premium fuel is needed. Dealer says not necessarily. Thoughts? Experience?
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
It's your choice - I don't use it and get consistently 22 mpg; but then, I don't redline the tach everytime I leave the red light. A lot of purists swear by it - to each his own.

does the nav system say street names?
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
Yes, the map shows street names... and as you are driving, the name of the road you are currently on appears at the bottom of the screen.
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
The nav gives you an audible street name for major roads, but I don't know what is defined as "major."

I use premium strictly because I'm afraid that if for whatever reason something goes wrong with the gas tank or engine, and I have less than premium in the tank, that the dealer/service dept. will use it as an excuse to void what would normally be 100% warranty work. I'm no mechanic so I have not even the slightest clue what possible problem could occur with using lesser grade fuel if in fact its even remotely possible (is it?). Yes, the chances are probably very slim this will happen and they would still needs to prove the less than premium gas, hypothetically, made the problem occur but... no chances taken here. Call me paranoid. :P

If that's your only reason, go with regular unleaded.
The manual 'recommends' premium, but states that regular can be used.
It says that you may notice a slight decrease in performance with the use of regular, but that it can be used.

    From the manual:
If unleaded premium gasoline is not available,
you may use unleaded regular gasoline
with an octane rating of at least 87
AKI number (Research octane number 91),
but you may notice a decrease in performance.

I personally notice a lack in fuel economy when dropping in octane, so I stick with 91 or higher.
Scan these threads and you'll find a lot of folks on both sides of this debate.

    (I just know I'm right!) :P ;)
  • irvsteroniirvsteroni Member Posts: 56
You're probably right, but then on the next page (9-4) it reads "using unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than recommended (the 93 Octane) above can cause persistent, heavy spark knock...if severe, this can lead to engine damage." It appears that a problem resulting from lesser octane would be covered but then again...call me paranoid.
  • scottm123scottm123 Member Posts: 1,501
I agree... and for several reasons, I'm a believer in the higher octane.

This is a sensitive subject for some people though, and sooner or later, they're coming out of the wood work.
Just when this debate calms down, someone comes along and awakens it again.

    LOL :D
  • zekeman1zekeman1 Member Posts: 422
Uhh, so if you're that concerned or "paranoid", why are you worrying about it :confuse: :confuse:. Use the higher grade, you'll be bullet-proof if something goes wrong (which probably won't), then get on with life.

That's exactly what he said - that he uses premium. He was replying to someone else's question about which grade to use.

highways and stuff i would guess. i find it out that a $500 garmin units says ALL street names and ininiti says only major roads.

    I'm debating between a G and a TL.

Looking at the available crash test info, including videos at Consumer Reports online, the G is good/acceptable but the TL has a clear advantage here. I think the G has better handling and is more fun to drive. But . . . crash test results are crash test results. I would appreciate anyone's comments.

(I'm surprised there are more comments/concerns about whether or not to use premium gas--you gotta be kidding me--than about such an issue as crash safety.)
  • absherabsher Member Posts: 4
I also sat in it at the showroom, and that's when I decided to buy a 2007. The new design severely limits the size of the rear window (the "posts" on either side are much thicker), meaning the area of viewing in the interior rearview mirror is much smaller.
Also, it seemed the brake and clutch pedals were slightly redesigned with their rear "posts" coming down at an angle. This meant that my big foot would hit the post of the brake when I pushed in the clutch.
  • steverestevere Member Posts: 14
Most vehicles that require premium fuel require it because they have a very high compression ratio. While you can use the lower grade gas for these vehicles, you do risk engine damage because the lower octane fuel is causing pinging to your engine. Vehicles have sensors which detect the pinging and they retard the timing to prevent engine problems. The price is bad performance - not gas mileage, but you do not have the power you should have.

The way I see it, you paid good $ for a really nice vehicle, spend the extra $.20-.25 per gallon on the gas for it. The cool part about premium gas is it is always about $.20-.25 more per gallon, even when gas is $1.50/gallon. That means as gas gets more expensive, the “premium” for premium is actually going down on a per gallon basis.

At 15,000 miles per year, at 19 miles per gallon (which is what I get, worst case), you are spending a total of ~$200 for premium gas. Over 7 years, that is 1400. That comes to ~4% of the entire cost of the car over 7 years, assuming the car was $35,000

Given the performance you get, and the knowledge you are doing what the manufacture suggested, I think the additional $200/year is probably worth it.

Would you feel pretty crappy if you messed up your new car over $200/year?
  • irvsteroniirvsteroni Member Posts: 56
My opinion is that between the two cars, you should go with what feels best for you and perhaps not necessarily based on the crash test results. If the G had received a poor rating I could understand going with the TL, but a Good/Acceptable rating is appropriate for this type of vehicle.

My opinion also is that the rear wheel drive (G35) setup may assist in avoiding an oncoming vehicle or swerving better than front wheel drive (TL) where if you do need to perform an emergency maneuver, the front tires may destabilize the car into a spin more so than the rear wheel drive (unless you happen to be an accomplished FWD driver). :)

My choice was also between an 07 TL (or TL-S) and the 07 G35x. I have 2 kids and safety was important to me as well. I also live in the NY area and we get decent amounts of snow/ice. My 04 TL was usually able to get through most of the inclement weather but I did have some issues - I felt the AWD (not available in any TL [yet])was very important in this regard. I felt the safety ratings on the G35 were good enough - it has all the airbags (front, rear, side, etc...) as well as stability control and ALBs. On a different note, by G35x blows away my TL from a handling standpoint - much more surefooted (?sp). I have been hard pressed to push the G35 to its limits (and I have tried!) compared to my 04 TL which many times I felt uncomfortable with when I pushed it too hard. This may not apply to you - depends on your style of driving. I also was kind of bored with my 04 TL and wanted something different. You will be happy with whichever car you choose - they are both excellent vehicles. Good luck!

In the past few months, a newspaper,I believe it was the Wall Street Journal, published a list of the vehicles with the fewest deaths per million vehicles sold. The reports were for the model years 2003 and 2004.

The Chevy Astro van had the fewest deaths followed closely by the G-35 and the BMW 7 series.

This is an important and relevant test of safety.
