Here is what a dealer told me: "It is 49% with a maximum residual markup (MRM) of $63,700 on a 2019. 56% with a maximum residual markup (MRM) of $65,000 on a 2020." (This was actually in Arizona, not California, because they had the inventory I wanted.)

Maximum Residual Markup is a new one on me. Is this common practice? Is it acceptable? Who is dictating it -- Porsche Financial or the dealer?

MRM is from the bank, and represents the maximum MSRP that will be subject to the residual value.

For example, let's say you find the perfect 2019, but the MSRP is $65,000. The $1300 difference between the MRM and the MSRP is paid for, by you, in the lease payment - not 49% of the $1300.

I don't think the last M in MRM is "markup". I think it is MSRP.

Using the 2019 model example:

$63700 is MRM. Every vehicle with an MSRP of $63,700 or greater will have the same residual (49% of $63700, or $31213.

Assume you pick a vehicle with an MSRP of $66,000. Without the MRM, the residual would be $32,340. Result is an $1127 difference in residual. $31/mo. more, that it would be without MRM.

The upshot is: Try to find units that have MSRPs at MRM or below. You pay dearly for units that exceed MRM.

1. 36 or 39 mo/5,000 miles (financing with Porsche Financial Services) and
2. 36 or 39 mo/7,500 miles (financing with US Bank)

Whichever program is available (36 or 39 mo) for each bank. Thank you.
