They don't really pre-pay the miles. It is a set amount per mile, but the total is subtracted from the residual, so you pay as you go.

I don't. But, it's likely to be either $0.10 or 0.15 per mile. I'd be shocked if it were above $0.20

My current lease expires 12 September. The residual set by VW at time of lease was $17,530. Carmax appraised the vehicle at $21,500, yesterday. Will VW simply apply that $4,000 toward a new lease? And if so, will they do so if I want the lease in my husband’s name instead of my own? Thank you very much for any assistance.

No. That is a buy bid from CarMax; VW has no incentive to increase the buyout price from what's on the contract.

You can sell the car to CarMax, and take the $4000 of equity to apply to a new lease. It will be two separate transactions.
