With inventory shortages, it seems unlikely that you will get leases at MSRP + destination - lease cash.

Also look at residual.. they can artificially lower residual and guess what... lease incentive wont be so impactful

Residuals are fixed by the leasing bank. The dealer cannot change them.

The bean counters at the bank set the residual value - one has nothing to do with the other.

My ID.4 AWD arrived yesterday at my dealer. This morning they sent me a lease offer that is much less favorable than what VW offered when I ordered the car a year ago, and not in line with the residual values and money factors I see on this forum. Any advice on what I should do?

It is a 2021 model, ordered in December of 2020.

My dealer offers me a monthly payment of $671 for my car, for a 36/15 lease. He won't tell me how he arrived at this number.

My own calculations are as follows:

We start with an MSRP of $51,265, as shown on the Monroney label, and including destination charges.
We subtract $500 for my down payment, $7500 for the Federal tax credit, and $4000 for the Vermont tax credit. This leaves our net cost at $39,265.

With a residual value of 46% of MSRP, the car should be worth $23,582 at the end of three years. Thus the lease amount is $15,683.

Add to this the state tax of 6%, or $941; VW's lease fee of $700; the dealer's documentation fee of $400; and a Vermont Registration fee of $117; and we get total payments of $17,841.

Add to this a money factor of .00143, or $918, for a total of $18,759 in payments. Over 36 payments, that’s $521 per month.

Please tell me where my calculation is faulty.

The dealer has to show you how they arrived at the number. It will be on the lease contract.

But, a couple of notes.

Appears that VT charges 6% tax on the difference between agreed value and residual. Agreed value will be the selling price, before rebates and down payments.
This would impute a taxable amount of $35,582, as the selling price is MSRP (before reducing by rebates).
$2134 tax vs your computation of $941.

Adjusted CAP cost:
$39265
+2134 (my tax calculation)
+700
+400
+117
= $42,616 adjusted CAP
- $23,582 residual
= $19034 depreciation

Depreciation / term = $19034 / 36 = $528.73/mo
Monthly rent charge = (Adjusted CAP + residual) = $66198 X .00143 = $94.66/mo.

$528.73
+$94.66
= $623.39 monthly payment.

That's assuming you make another payment of $623 at lease signing (for the first payment. If you are making no further payment, the payment would be closer to $641/mo.

I've made a lot of assumptions, based on your post. But, if you get the actual numbers from the dealer, you might see where the differences actually lie. I'm about $30/mo. lower than the dealer, but I'm guessing on a few things.

The biggest issues with your calculation that I see, is that I think you've miscalculated the sales tax, and also the amounts that are subject to the money factor.

The dealer finally sent me a fuzzy screen shot of his lease calculations. Looks like he has doubled the money factor to 0.0028, despite my near-perfect credit rating, causing an $80 per month jump on the monthly payment. He will not budge -- take it or leave it. But alas, I have been waiting a year for this car, and none similar are available anywhere nearby. So it looks like he has me over a barrel.

It is the equivalent of the tax credit.

You only get to claim the credit when you purchase, not lease.
