Mind the fact that the switch you have may be different than the one for the 96. I don't know, but will check the wiring diagram tomorrow when I get to work and can look in our library of factory service manuals.
From the looks of the reprint I got from GMPD, the 99-01 switch looks like it has a transistor in it that controls the LED orange dot. Yes it needs 12v to run but the way it is wired internally looks like this: E D F _________________________________ | | __|__ | | | Lamp |___|____ / | | | ____| |___| | | | LED | | | |________| | | | | | | |____|________________________|__|
B C
Sorry about the criptic drawing but the small box under the "D" is the power in to turn on the LED, the "B" goes to ground, and the line from the downside of the switch through "F" to "C" is the trigger voltage to turn the transistor "ON" to allow the power from "D" to go through to light the LED. Think of it as an internal relay.
From my limited knowledge of transistor electronics, you may be able to connect the "D" to a Headlight or Parking light "ON" source, then when the lights are on, and you hit the switch, the "F" and "C" closes and power is used to trigger the transistor and turn on the LED, but there may be enough residual power through the LED circuit to hold the auxillary lamp external relay on. It won't be enough to close the relay, but may be enough to hold it closed. Guess you may have to play with this one and see how it works. Be careful though where you hook into the wiring as the computers in this vehicle don't like high amperage back feeds. E-mail me if you want some further clarification, as I don't want to bore the rest of the group, when I go into training instructor mode ,hehehe matthew
Vince, About the spring squeak...I lubed my shackles with aerosol lithium grease. WD40 works for about a day. The oil is too thin to last. Yes, I spray between the leaves too, but the shackles are where the squeak is. Joelis probably has this right. Get the leaves replaced if dealer will do it for you. It's got me thinking...
Thanks for the info quad, I'll try the WD40 for starters. I'm not impressed with GM springs if a simple overload causes permanent damage (Z71 story). I've never overloaded mine although I do carry 2500lb regularly. I don't hear the noise when loaded. It's pretty minor, probably the grease will fix it.
a 4wd...Neutral/Graphite interior..(did I say grey?)...autoride shocks...firm/normal...air rears...2nd row buckets..and the oh so nice moonroof...$44,310 MSRP.....pics later...
wight1, pat, mike, tex6, obyone, xring, and quad - glad you guys enjoyed it...
mike - me too! (on the LT's vs. P's)
randy - good advice on the spare...gonna go check mine out later today i think. thanks...
pat - yeah, i been messin' 'round in on some fire breaks...
tex - haven't changed the front axle or diff yet. replaced the rear axle with mobil 1 75w90 synthetic around the 7,500 mark based on recommendationn from my chevy service rep. he said the mobil 1 is good up to 100k miles if you don't tow/haul much. depending on how much you do tow or haul he said it's a judgment call. i think the manual recommends every 10k or 25k (can't remember which) under heavy towing conditions. plus, the mobile 1 is way less expensive than the gm goodwrench stuff your dealership will sell you.
oby - actually considered painting the bilsteins before mounting them...decided that was too much effort.
tim - you got a burb? huh? did i miss something...gonna have to scroll back a bit i guess...
yep...no auto climate control with moonroof....I'll take moonroof though...it's the flip up or slide back glass type with matching liner cover to close it off...ASC I believe?
Has anybody put Cab lights on their Silverado? My truck was at the dealer yesterday for 6000 mile service and I asked them to give me a quote for installing them. They said $340. Seems kinda steep to me.
Running M1 75W-90 in front diff. Old fluid bad shape at one year (water intrusion). Running M1 ATF in manual transfer case. If you have an autotrack system, you should only run the stuff GM sells you.
The cab lights are high priced.I to light the looks of them so is what I do to all the trucks I've had is put a Lund moonvisor on,they have the built in lights. On the down side you also need to like the visor look, which I do so it works for me. Some people say your mpg drops alot but mine has never gone down after I installed the visor. Andrew
Has anyone had a problem with their wipers failing on their Silverado (1999)? We got snow here in Colorado last weekend and I tried to use the wipers to clear the windshield. Didn't work - snow was too heavy I guess. Now the wipers don't work. The moter runs and the blades try to move but seem to be stripped where they connect to the shaft. Lift them off the windshield and they move freely. Guess I'll have to call the dealer later today and see how long it will take to fix them. Sure seems like a poor design if a little snow can cause the shaft or blade to strip out. Thanks.
Well, I haven't posted for a long time (6 months or so) on the site, but I thought it was time for an update. I have had two GMC new style sierra's a 99 and a 2000. The first truck, fire red, ext cab 4x4 5.3L 270hp slt, a very nice truck, but it had a few problems, first the spare tire fell off at 14000 miles on it, had to get that replaced, and a few other minor details, in all a very nice truck I don't regret buying. The factory $365 firestones at 20k were 3/4 wore out. Gas milage averaged 15 or so normal driving, 18mpg on the road. At 20,000 miles I traded trucks to a 2000 4dr (I wanted a 4dr in 99) that I ordered, 4x4, 5.3 285hp slt. First of all after 10,000 miles my gas milage is much worse avg 13, 15-16 on the road, of course I push it on the road goin 75-90, but it shouldn't have dropped. I guess the old saying hp costs milage it true. Best thing I did on the truck, got the cheap tires, changed out immedately to 265, Michelin LTX At's for $500, not wearin at all and look great. This truck though had the transmission go out (the accumulator piston blew out the side of the tranny) at 6000 miles, GM changed out whole tranny no charge. As far as the springs, both trucks sit lower in the back now for I have carried at times 3500 lb pallets of seed, but they seem fine, the 2-3" drop makes them easier to get into and load. I really don't regret buying either truck, I just wish GM would have a bit better quality control. I post so that others can learn from my experiences I guess. First of all, if you buy a truck, buy good non factory tires (big factory margin), tires that you want and will last. Secondally, take advantage of all programs, rebates, college grad, low interest, commercial (IE farmer, contractor, used for business can be 500 or so off or at Home Depot). They are nice trucks, they ride well lots of room, but be prepared for possible problems, that is why you have warranty to work the bugs out. I guess when this one gets about 30k on it a year or so from now, ill try and trade for a 2002 HD 3/4 ton crew cab 6.0L, I just wish that GM would make a big enough gas tank in the sb, and would allow the allison tranny with the 6.0L (after my experience with the gm).
Also first wk of october i am possibly going to add a grill guard. Called gorhino today and confirmed tow hooks do not need to be removed now i need to do some ^#&#*#*() (the b word) to the local place im having it put on at (YEA TIM IM HAVING IT INSTALLED i dont feel like putting a damn grill guard on haha so dont say a word)
$480 installed $460 + shipping if i order it and install myself
Kyle - Do you still like your Westin step bars? Would buy the same again? Been thinking about getting the exact same as you did, just wondering if you have had any second thoughts? Is $359 a best price? If not, what would you get instead? BTW, they look great on your truck. Any 2500 owners given any thought to installing mud/debris flaps? If so, what kind? John
about the evaluation that edmunds did on the 2000 trucks where ford was evaluated as #1. She had posted a response along with this link. I thought it described the people who evaluated the trucks for edmunds to a T.
Does anyone had a good suggestion for a good wax? I have a '99 silverado & want to keep it looking as best as I can. Blue is a hard color to keep clean. Got a load of sand and scratched the side a little. Appreciate any input.
do I have the feeling that if the Edmunds writers had picked the Silverado no. 1 a lot of people would be saying they are the smartest people on the face of the earth instead of questioning their intelligence and integrity?
Regardless of who was picked as #1, the personal opinion factor, which rated 10%, skewed the evaluation enough so that the results are worthless. My opinion would not have changed because of this. Bottom line, what is good for some may not be for others. So why even bother to incorporate something like personal opinion into an evaluation? I'm sure you don't care what anyone else on Edmund’s purchases with regards to a truck, nor for whatever set of reasons. So why does Edmund’s take it upon them to share their opinions? Don't think the authors are any more qualified than you or me to enter their personal opinions.
However, did you like the article which link I had posted?
Yesterday I received a letter from the Morpace International, Inc. out of Farmington Hills, MI. Seems they are a marketing research and consulting group apparently working for GM, (speculating here). They state that they understand I am the owner of a 2000 GMC Seirra and are offering me $150 to drive a vehicle here locally in Georgia for my comments and input on the experience. They want my input as an aid for future vehicle development. I have yet to call them back. Will do so later today. I am really interested in how I came up on the list, especially with my history with recent GM trucks. Let you know more later.
that would almost pay for the Roadmaster Active Suspension....

welcome to edmunds.
On your lumbar support, there is no adjustment to raise or lower the support as it clips to the top of the seat frame.
On the rear seat a/c vents, I noticed that there is one duct supplying both vents and can't figure why one would have more output than the other. One reason could be that the cold air supply duct may be misaligned, somehow that doesn't figure. By removing 4 screws in the center console, you should be able to remove the console bin to see under it and check the duct alignment.
Re: "Do you still like your Westin step bars?" * yep, love 'em.
"Would buy the same again?" * every day of the week and twice on sundays
"Been thinking about getting the exact same as you did," * the real question here is, who hasn't? LOL!!!
"just wondering if you have had any second thoughts?" * seriously, none. they have held up great. of course, they're only 6 months old though too.
"Is $359 a best price?" * shy of going home and checking my checkbook, yes, that sounds about right.
"If not, what would you get instead?" * in looking, i didn't find ANYthing else that interested me. at least not with comparable price, looks and warranty
If you can download the photos to the computer, the camera will have the best resolution. If you have existing photos, scan them at the best resolution possible. Either way will be fine. I don't think anyone is going to grade you on them ;-)
I never left just alotta work to do around the house during the summer and not much time to come here, also done a lot of camping too, twice to Canada, then Maine, then western NY! October off to Conneticut for the final camping trip will be at Lime Rock Park Racetrack for the final Busch North Series race, that's always a good time cuz we camp right at the track and party hardy. Big Blue has 10000 miles on her now, trouble free I might add, but I did have to have the Leer cap replaced since it developed cracks in gelcoat and leaking side windows (what ever happened to quality control?) Your pics are nice, if I didn't look close I'd swear it was my truck minus the flares, tailight guards & 4x4 decal. Because I bought the optional 245 AT tires alot of people think it's a 4x4 without the decal, I put the ole "Heartbeat" logo where the 4x4 decal is normally located. The rhino lining looks like a quality application, here in upstate NY I have just started seeing adds in paper for it, so they are branching out evidentally.
Alright I've rambled enough, back to work for now seeeeeyaaaaa
In earlier posts someone mentioned using Pledge on the black plastic on the exterior trim. Is this the regular ol' household dusting Pledge? Then someone mentioned "303 Pledge" - we he just yankin' our chain?
