sunshyne, My thoughts on "special pricing plans" are they are simply no-hassle, leave-money-on-the-table-to-the-dealer plans. It's the classic taking the candy cane away from an innocent lil' baby.
If you are truly motivated in saving money (and not necessarily time), then consider doing some research.
1. Find out how many vehicles can be found within a particular radius of where you live. I ran an Autotrader search on my vehicle (Infiniti M's) and found almost 30 cars in my state. That's 30 2008's too many burning a whole in the wallets of the regional dealerships.
2. Determine which cars are there hottest sellers. I think (not for sure) that this would be the Mazda 3 - sporty and economical.
3. Determine how much money the dealer could be making on every "Mazdanomic" deal as they sell their hottest sellers.
4. Present your case and let the negotiations begin.
You can also run blue book numbers on the car you are interested in buying. You'll be surprise what the retail numbers will come out to be. Remember, that straight off the bat, as soon as the car rolls off the dealer's lot, it will lose anywhere from 10 on up to 25 percent of it's retail value - depending how the consumer markets like the car.
It is better than the deal I am getting in the Orlando area. I am looking at a 2008 Touring FWD MSRP $33,105 and the best I have gotten offered is $25,100 which is the $8K that almost everyone is getting. So it seems that you're doing better than most by at least $1,500.
This forum has been a great source of info. I see that there's been discussion on what to get off MSRP (8-9-10k). Are these discounts taking into account the Mazda loyalty rebate of $1,000? Do you know if there is a Recent Graduate discount program for the Mazda? Ford has one that gives you $500 if you graduated within 1 year. I have a deal for a 08 GT 41,275 MSRP for $32,365. (I don't qualify for loyalty program) and I am not sure if this is a fair price. I am in San Antonio Thanks
Does anyone know what are the penalties to the dealership if they don't sell all their 2008 stock by the Dec 31st? Do they continue offering the same rebates (in this case the $8K off) until they get them off the lot or they get a penalty from the manufacturer?
I am looking at an '08 GT for an MSRP of $40,241 and a price out the door of $30,800. They are not offering the 0% at this price but at an addition $4,250.00...either or. I tried working them on the 0% as well and will be going back on the 26th with my trade. How did you work both?
I spoke with the GM regarding the discounts and he said that he would have them on the '08 until they are gone.
Boscoboy: Just confirming your MSRP $40,241 offer, disconted to $30,800, includes TT&L and "transportation" cost. Not trying to question what you wrote, but that would be a ~$12K reduction in price. If so, I'd like to talk with your dealer or get a copy of the offer to show to my local dealers.
I ended up with another '08 AWD GT that had an MSRP of $39,960 w/ $670 delivery and paid $30,731. We are adding the rear DVD, roof rack and sat radio which we got for $2,050 installed. We could not get the 0% financing and I pressed them hard. I am happy with the deal and we drove it home today.
Sounds like you got a good deal, I know you will enjoy it. I have reached the $9K discount mark on a CX-9 GT (w/o GT Assistance Package) and they're willing to go no more. I had one dealer say he'd be willing to put in the dual head rest DVD players at cost, but I have yet to see what "cost" is. If you have any idea on the true dealer cost on these, I'd appreciate hearing back from you.
Thanks to everybody on this forum. I just picked up a new 2008 CX-9 GT (14 miles on it) with GT Asst. Package, Moonroof and Bose, Blindspot Warning System, Roof Rails and Rack, and Wheel Locks for 30,015 out the door (including destination. There is no sales tax here), not including ~200 dollars in Oregon DMV fees . They didn't even haggle with me when I asked them to take 10,000 off the MSRP. I feel like I should have gone lower!
The salesperson told us at the end that this was only the second car she had sold all month. This was at Herzog/Meier Mazda in Beaverton, Oregon.
I had to go to a dealer that was 20 miles away from where we lived. The one that was closer did not have any '08 and another one maxes out at $8k. I live in the DC area and getting the $9k was pretty easy. We are getting the 10.5" removable DVD and Game Syste, installed. With the roof rak the price was $1600 and another $405 for the sat radio. I have no clue on the cost, I was comparing it to the cost of the installed unit.
Did you end up getting this deal? They are telling us that you can't get the discount only 2300 if you take the financing deals. I read where you are getting around 8000 off and the financing off. Has anyone got both on 2008's??
I got similar pricing about a month ago. 8.5k off MSRP for an AWD GT, and then added the DVD and Sirius. I'm sure there was a little (or even $1k) left on the table, but I am very pleased with my deal and car. Dealers need to make some money too, and if I look at prices paid as receently as September, this is a great deal.
With a month on the car and a 600 mile round trip this past week, I am very happy with the CX-9. BSM is a nice option and the car handles really well for a vehicle in this class, and much better that what I experienced in test driving an Enclave, Highlander, Veracruz (also nice), and an Escape.
We continue to see a number of great deals at $9, 10, and 11K off MSRP, and as you know, auto dealers seldom lose money on a deal. Please explain the Mazda to dealer cash arrangement that is underwriting these deals.
Thanks to all who have posted here. The information is fantastic. This is my contribution to the board. After ruling out the Highlander, I decided to drop the hammer on a 2008 CX-9 AWD Sport:
$31335 base $1760 bose/roof $350 pwr seat $50 wheel locks $200 pearl white mica $33695 MSRP -$7695 discount $26,000 plus tax, tag, doc
I learned that dealers have until Jan. 2 to report 2008 sales. Shopped around to one other dealer who had my first choice (white AWD Sport), and they would not go beyond $7k off, so I landed at my current dealer who went another $700. I thought this deal was good seeing that it is a base/sport, and most of the larger discounts are coming off of loaded GT's.
Hope this info helps someone, and thanks again to all who have contributed here.
I can really only speak for my region (North East) because programs and dealer pay plans can differ from region to region. In some cases, I really do not see how these deals were made, because the incentives and payouts do not reach that total amount of discounts being applied
Most of the higher discounts that we see near $10K are on the GT models. The biggest discount I sold on a CX-9 was $8,500 which was a GT w/ GT assist package and it was to fill out my month.
Mazda did not pay out stair step money for November and December, which is bonus money paid by reaching a sales objectives.
There is a $4,250 dealer engagement on all 08's. Holdback is between $500 and $700 on CX-9's. Mazda does not pay the dealer if special financing is taken.
In a lot of these cases, dealers are taking a loss just to move old inventory because most dealers do not own their cars outright. They are on "floor plan" meaning they pay interest on them, so sometimes taking a loss will prevent payout further interest, and on these CX-9's, the interest is quite high because of the value of these cars.
From what I have witnessed from most people here getting these $10K discounts are that they are being made by dealers who have many of these CX-9's in inventory. I only have 1 left, and have no desire to lose money on it, because it will sell.
I have had a couple people looking to buy a CX-9 for $10K+ off, but, I am up front in saying I will not discount that much. If they like my car, I will give them my best deal. If it does not work for them or they think they can do better, I wish them luck. No hard feelings. I don't mind selling a car for invoice, but, I would like to earn my holdback, because I believe I am entitled to that money. These days, I need that money.
One thing I hear a lot of is when customers say "the market is terrible" and assume they car rob the car. I don't get mad, because in theory that is a logical thought. However, I cannot stay in business doing busines that way. My response is "you must be doing ok, or you would not be looking at a $40K vehicle". I usually get a chuckel from them.
I'm sorry I went off on a tangent, but, in reality, there is not much hidden earnings on these cars, and with dealers selling them at $10K+ discounts, they are most absolutely losing money for that transaction. I refuse to do business like that because my store would close. I have found being up front about not discounting $10K+ and winning the customer over (something I'm great at, not to toot my own horn...hehe) is the best way to do business. It has worked, because I only have 1 '08 CX-9 left.
I have been talkin with 3 dealers in the Indy area on almost identical 08 CX-9 Grand Touring AWD. None of them are moving beyond invoice. What did you guys do to get the 9 - 10k off MSRP?
I had trouble with my first post, hopefully this one will work. The vehicle is an 08 CX-9 GT AWD with the following options: Wheel Locks Moonroof & Bose Audio Pkg -inc: pwr glass sliding moonroof w/interior sunshade, Bose Centerpoint 5.1 surround sound system w/(10) speakers, in-dash 6-disc CD changer (N/A w/1EP Rear Entertainment System) Towing Pkg. -inc: 3500 lb capacity, HD transmission cooler, HD radiator fan, wiring harness, receiver/cover, revised engine control module Grand Touring Assistance Pkg.-inc: touch screen DVD navigation system w/voice command, rearview camera, pwr hatch Blind Spot Monitoring Cargo Mat Cargo Net Dockable Entertainment System -inc: DVD player, docking station, (2) wireless headphones, wireless game controller, AC charger & carry bag Auto Dimming Mirror -inc: compass, HomeLink, rain sensor cover
Sticker is $43,145
Any suggestions on what a good deal would be or a range?
We bought a CX-9 Sport yesterday for $22,300, $8k less than MSRP. They would have come down more on a Touring model with moonroof. I searched autotrader.com to get an idea of what dealers were marking them down more, although they don't always advertise it in there. In general, it seemed the more they had on hand the more they were dealing. Jake Sweeney in Cincinnati, Ohio and Jeff Schmidt in Beavercreek, Ohio were both marking at least $8k off. If no dealer in Indy will deal, it might be worth the drive. You can check out the cars they have on hand on autotrader.
CX-9 touring 2008 -MSRP $36,140 (DVD and Bose) Dealer discount -$7998 ($28,270) TTL (MD 6% tax) = $2,093 TOTAL delivered selling price=$30,240 +0% APR for 60 months (with a down payment of $4500 my monthly payments come out to $429 a month.) If i didn't take the 0% APR, I would have gotten a little more than $10,000 off MSRP. (my credit score was 715)
This was from Castle Mazada in Silver Spring, Maryland. I called 4-5 dealers in the DC area and went to one other in Gaithersburg, but no one could come close to this price with 0% APR (the most they would take off was $2,000-$2,500) The salesperson told me that they were trying to get rid of this particular car. and that's why i was able to get this deal...
seloo, another helpful explanation of how the discounts work (ie timing, floorplan, etc) can be found in the CX-7 thread here: post 651 Granted this guy is not affiliated with Mazda (like Aviboy), but he did offer good info about why some dealerships can make aggressive offers, while others can't...
The deal is on an 08 CX-9 Grand Tourning AWD with GT assist, Tow package, Moonroof/Bose, Blind spot, and auto dimming/home link/Tep rear view mirror. MSRP is $40,310. I talked with the Sales manager today and right off the bat he quoted $31,700.. He said they have 15 of the same spec in stock and need to get rid of them. Is this a good price or should I go for another grand or maybe hit him up for the rear seat entertainment package or both? They have 15 of them so I guess I not not in a huge hurry.
Im in indiana.. I think I may hold off till the end of the month.. Does anyone know when Mazda support will be gone for these 08's? I know the dealer incentive is now $5250. I just ran an auction report and these thing are only going for $17000 to $19000. So If you are looking at a used CX-9 that is what the dealer is paying at auction.
michael83 You are correct... I was trying to trade my 08 CX9 Sport FWD with 1100 miles on it, and here in Cali they are going for between 19-20K for above average vehicles at auction. Approx 15 of them (various condition) with under 10K miles went at auction in the past 3 weeks. However if you have a Touring or a GT with AWD you will see more than that. However, it really enforces what I should have done, and that is go for a used vehicle. If you get a certified used one at a Mazda dealer, and knowing what the dealers are paying at auction then, I could saved even more money.
Anyway lesson learned.
Note: Trade in values.... forget what KBB or NADA or even what Edmunds tell you what your trade in value is. Dealers will always look at the Manheim website to see what your particular car goes for at auction. I have now seen several dealers pull up that report to tell me how little my CX9 is worth...;) however their are 2 things they try and gloss over.... 1) where the auction was held. 2) What the condition of the vehicle was when it was sold at auction
So if your dealer pulls up that report and the report shows a list of cars auctioned on the east coast and you are on the west coast, ask the dealer to tack on another 1500+ dollars to your trade in due, to shipping costs that it would take to bring it to his lot.... LOL
Also, the condition of these cars at acution can vary greatly, from salvage to above average..... so once again, press the dealer on that.
However at the end of the day, it all comes down to how much the dealer wants to move his car, as compared to having to sell your car once it gets onto the lot.
What I have done on trade is look at what that dealer is selling that same vehicle for on their used lot. I then subtract 3-4k depending on how tight it is.. That is the number I try to work towards. I have had luck with that on my last two deals. Remember though you will always get more from a private sale. Just make sure your car is clean or cleaner than the one on the lot.
Your situation is bad because you can pick up a new sport for the wholesale used price.
Pulled the trigger on an 08 AWD Sport, with power driver seat and roof rack. MSRP was around 31,900, dealer sold it to me for 22,200 plus 6% tax and $140 in fees. They also discounted their extended warranty (60m/100k) from an outrageous $1799 to $899. I believe they had 3 cx-9's on the lot when I visited. Did not get the 0% apr as the discount would not have been as great, but they did beat my credit union apr rate.
I tried hard to get a CX-9 '08 saturday for 9k off MSRP (austin,TX). The lowest I got was $7500 off. Their deal ends today. So I guess I'll wait and see if they come down. I have time. I was able to get them to mark down a '09 $3500 off MSRP btw.
Also, we almost bought a 2008 CR-V EX with AWD a few months earlier, but got turned off by the trade in offer. At that point we were willing to pay $22,600 for a CR-V. Now we get a bigger car, bigger motor, and similar interior for only 500 more! Can't beat that!
Can someone tell me of good dealerships around ohio to get a good deal on a CX-9. I have shopped around and have little luck with discounts around what I have seen on the board. I am looking to buy soon. Thanks.
I don't where you are located, but Jack Sweeney in Cincinnati had quite a few in stock and were marking them down $8,500. Jeff Schmidt in Beavercreek, Ohio came down about the same. We purchased ours at Matt Castrucci in Centerville, Ohio for about $8k off a sport model. You can check on autotrader.com to see what they have on hand.
Edmunds does not show the $4250 marketing support for 2008 CX-9's on its incentives page. Does this incentive carry over to January? Has it gone up (or gone away)? Thanks!
I just got quoted today $9000 OFF the MSRP for a 2008 CX-9. So I suppose they still have some considerable marketing support. Not sure exactly how much though. Hope that helps.
What is the best deal that is to be had for a 2008, I want leather and a sunroof but don't need any other extras, except for that I am really wanting the blindspot monitoring. I can't seem to find a good deal out there, The dealer is even looking for used ones for me and so far they have found only Tourning which I can live with but we are talking all of them have only leather not sunroof and the price they are asking for is 27k that sounds high to me. The milage on the used vehicles are from 12,000 - 15,000 I don't mind used but I really wanted under 12,000 miles. Is that price to high? Do you think I could offer them 23k? Help please I love the CX9 and can actually wait I wrecked me van in Dec and have settled with the ins. co so we are just holding out until I find the deal that I am looking for. Would it be better to hold off? Or make an offer? The bad thing that I am finding is I am going to have to drive up to 200 miles which I don't mind. My local dealer has 1 2008 and 1 2009 models both Ground Touring. I am still hoping they will come down on the 08 GT do you think I could offer 27k for it? I know lots of questions in one email sorry I am excited about this site. AGain I apologize.
the best deal i was able to get was 9200 off from an msrp 40310 cx-9. didn't seem like the best possible deal so i passed
What car in this class can you get this type of discount on that offers as much as the CX-9? What are your alternatives?
These discounts will not be around forever. If you wait too long, you may find yourself paying $5000 - $6000 more for a comparable 2009. Does that sound smart?
Common people wake up. $9,000 off a popular Japanese SUV? That is unheard of!
What made you decide to go with the Sport? I have been talking with another dealer today and they have offered me a Grand Touring 2008, Bose/moonroof, for $27,711. He says he has no room for negotiation. I am thinking of offering him 27k and prepared to walk away if he can't do it. What do you think? He said with Mazda loyalty he could sell it for 26,711, but we don't own a Mazda. Thanks for any input.
We got the Sport because my kids think the cloth seats are more comfortable. Also, my husband liked the exterior color of the Sport better (it was gray, the Touring was white and we already own a white car). I like to keep things simple. The less buttons and gadgets the better for me!
Does anyone no of a dealership in New Orleans or Mississippi Gulf Coast area that has 08 are that are dealing? If so what type of deals and the name and location of dealership. Thanks,
Just got my CX9 FWD Sport for 11K Off MSRP. I was at the dealership just for an oil change on my 2000 MPV with 104,000 miles. I went to the showroom and looking at the CX9 and the sales manager asked me if I was interested and I asked him if they are really taking 10K Off MSRP and he told me yes right off the bat. Then I told him to write the numbers. CX9 FWD Sport MSRP $ 30,235 -10 K - 1K = $19,235 - $4000(Trade-in)=$15,235 +TTL. Since they don't have the car they charge me $500 and another $500 for processing and documentaion. I think I got a good deal. I called other dealerships local and out of state that have the car in stock and they are quoting me $4000 to $5000 more. The dealer is in Louisville Kentucky(Oxmoor Mazda)
Zoomme, congrats sounds like you made a great deal. When I called though things seemed a little off. The guy said he could get my car (I was looking at) and upgrade it for 400 dollars more than my last quote. Then when I asked for a vin he wouldn't give it to me. When I asked to at least put the car in writing he sent me a description of a 2009 FWD. I then told him we originally talked about a AWD and he said he couldn't do the deal and it would be 2k more. At that point I was done. He did say he could still beat my offer by 500 dollars all he needed to do was find the car. I felt more comfortable with the other dealership so I decided not to do it, because again he would have to get the car and there was no proof of what he was getting. You did get a great deal but for me I don't think I could trust these guys. Thanks for sending the information though. Have fun with your new CX-9!
Bestdealoh, At first I'm also hesitant to do the deal because the car was not in stock and thinking I'm getting a great deal and they told and assure me they can find the car with the specs I wanted.I signed the purchase order with the VIN number and They took my trade and gave me a loaner. After a week they called me and said my car is ready for pickup. When I arrived, First thing I checked was the VIN Because there was also another CX9 same color like mine ready for pickup too.The VIN # they gave me was different from the actual car and they just made another purchase order ready for me to signed.Overall I was happy dealing with the dealership in the end for getting me the same spec.

We bought a CX-9 Sport yesterday for $22,300, $8k less than MSRP. They would have come down more on a Touring model with moonroof. another helpful explanation of how the discounts work (ie timing, floorplan, etc) can be found in the CX-7 thread here: post 651 Granted this guy is not affiliated with Mazda (like Aviboy), but he did offer good info about why some dealerships can make aggressive offers, while others can't...
Thanks

Your situation is bad because you can pick up a new sport for the wholesale used price.
Good luck
Where? It's only $4,250 where I am.
MSRP 32,115
+ Service fee 179
- discount 2442 (invoice price/s plan)
Discounted to 29, 852
Dealer cash back 5,250
Owner Loyalty 1000
$23102 + tax title license
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the deal. Can't wait to pick it up.
AGain I apologize.
We got the Sport because my kids think the cloth seats are more comfortable. Also, my husband liked the exterior color of the Sport better (it was gray, the Touring was white and we already own a white car). I like to keep things simple. The less buttons and gadgets the better for me!
Thanks
CX9 FWD Sport MSRP $ 30,235 -10 K - 1K = $19,235 - $4000(Trade-in)=$15,235 +TTL. Since they don't have the car they charge me $500 and another $500 for processing and documentaion. I think I got a good deal.
I called other dealerships local and out of state that have the car in stock and they are quoting me $4000 to $5000 more. The dealer is in Louisville Kentucky(Oxmoor Mazda)
You did get a great deal but for me I don't think I could trust these guys. Thanks for sending the information though. Have fun with your new CX-9!
Can you share what interest rate you received? And was it with Mazda?
Thanks,
