Wanted to say thank-you for your help. I leased the 2024 Turbo Signature in Soul Red. MSRP $42,690 discounted to $40,770 (including $500 loyalty rebate). 36/12K ended up at $528.90 + sales tax with $636 due at signing.

Happy with the discount, and especially the 0.00101 MF (2.42% APR), in the current environment. Most of all, delighted with the car! My third CX-5.

i have a couple of offers i am comparing from the same dealership and though they are different stock # the costs are pretty close, within $200 of each other due to different accessories. Also the incentives have improved overnight according to dealer, and I had them adjust down to 10K miles anyway. So def not apples to apples but I am really struggling to see the math and verify that all is above board on the latest proposal. The dealer i find to be very easy to work with and excellently transparent, but the numbers have me for a loop.

Current deal I am focused on is CX-5 Carbon Edition, 36 months/10K and matches the .00205/64% kindly shared above.

    MSRP - $33,910 ($31,950 before equipment & transportation)
    Selling Price - $31,674
Rebate - $2,360 ($1500 lease loyalty, $500 Mazda Loyalty Reward, $360 Lease customer Cash)
    Doc Fee - $175
    Gov't Fees - $97.50
    Capitalized Taxes in 11746 (8.625%) - $1,566.12
    Gross Cap Cost - $34,162
    Cap Cost Reduction - $2,360
    Adj Cap Cost - $31,802.62
paid by me - $390.24 (1st month only)
    Residual - $21,702.40
Total due at sign - $390.24

I have been given an option of $316/month without capitalizing taxes/fees, $2,582 out of pocket or $390 by capitalizing all. Non-capitalized seems to match the Edmunds calculator at $316, but rolling them in seems like its off by $9? On the flip side, I'd assume maybe the $2,582 is perhaps too high if something is off? Or is there something with local sales tax that I am not understanding?

This deal and the $1500 lease to lease incentive does require me to give them my CX-30 back, which still has 4 remaining payments of $281.87 so possibly that's being factored in? As of now we've been operating under the assumption they will pull me ahead with no penalty. I checked around a few sites and don't think I have much positive equity, if any at all, so happy to take the $1500 lease to lease with MFS.

Sorry for the long post and ask for help, but if someone can review and advise I would very much appreciate it! Thank you!

Edit to add: silly question, but if i choose to capitalize all payments, should it be $0 due at signing, or is the $390.24 correct? I did a little cross-reference with the LH calculator (assuming incentives are untaxed) and the numbers align to the dealer, minus me owing anything at signing.

No idea on your trade. Something to verify with the dealer.

I didn't do the math, but sometimes rolling in your taxes, in NYS, results in paying tax on the tax, and that might be where the difference is. Also, of course, by rolling the taxes in, that amount is subject to the money factor and finance charges. I'd certainly consider paying the tax upfront, in your state.

Thank you for the insight. If I’m likely to turn it in early again, or want to avoid risk of it getting totaled wouldn’t it make sense to not pay that tax up front?

Is there any way to validate how they are getting to these numbers? I’m not sure what math to calculate 😕

Turning it in early won't matter. If you roll the tax in, that will increase your CAP cost, and the equity will be less. (assuming no pull ahead program). The tax is paid upfront, either way. Either you borrow the money (added to the CAP cost), or you pay it out of pocket. I think for the $300+ savings, I might pay that upfront. It isn't a big deal, either way

The payment calculation is correct to the penny. You have all of the variables, just plug them in the formula.

You have all of the variables, just plug them in the formula.

thank you again for taking the time to answer my questions and help me with the math. If I do get a pull ahead offer before the 36 months, or if the car gets totaled/stolen then I will have saved the money by not going out of pocket up front, no?

I plugged the numbers into the Edmunds calculator and they don't match the lease proposal, so I was curious.

    them: $316/month + $2582 OOP ...or... $390/month
    Edmunds: $316/month + 2256 OOP ...or... $381/month https://edmu.io/I1R4

there is a $324-$326 gap that I can't reconcile between Edmunds calculator and what I've been presented.
They've listed the taxes as $1566 but Edmunds calculates them only $1087. I'm confused.

I don’t use the Edmunds calculator. I used the adjusted CAP cost from your quote. I wouldn’t trust any on-line calculator to do NYS sales tax for a lease. Dealers don’t mess around with sales tax. Remember, all CAP cost reductions (rebates, for example) are taxed, as well as the payments.
