Michaell, Thanks again for your help. The dealer I used was willing to negotiate the price of the car, but not the MF. In the end I got the price down enough, and had a decent interest rate of 5.62%, where it made more sense to me to buy instead of lease. Went with a 2024 Premium with package 15, Rockford Fosgate audio and splash guards for a total MSRP (including destination) of 33,155. OTD (including tax and all fees) of $31,849.

Thanks Michael! I’m looking to lease a Subaru forester premium but not sure which price (MSRP or selling price or out the door price?) to try and negotiate and how to start the conversation. I read in a few places that negotiating the monthly costs isn’t worth it and it’s better to negotiate the price first since that will help lower the cost. I’m trying to get a deal that will help me pay somewhere between ideally 300-350 a month and 0 down (if that’s even possible today). What should I start to negotiate first and are my expectations above realistic or am I way off course with prices up all over?
(I’m not sure what a good deal for the forester looks like today either)
And should we ever consider putting anything in terms of down payment? I remember a few months back reading that it’s not advised. Should I pay taxes and fees upfront or roll into the cost? Is there anything else I should consider?
(Sorry if this has been asked before - Beginner seeking advice. If this belongs in another area, I’ll move it thanks for the help all)
I would like the MF and residual on a 24 Forester Premium in 97202 please. 36/12

.00228 is what I found on lease hacker also. However the dealer is claiming that the tier one rate is .00278
I asked if they were marking up the MF, and they said no, that is straight from Subaru.
So they are straight up lying to me?
Put a lot of time into this deal so far, and I would hate to start over with another dealer. If they are lying that is a problem for me.
The maximum markup is .00050. I'll let you do the math.
Thank you again. I told the dealer I will not pay the MF markup. See how it goes. I might walk away from this deal if they fight me on this.
Or, you could negotiate a bigger discount from sticker to offset the MF hike. As long as you get the payment you want, does it matter how the dealer gets there?

The thing is, I cannot stand lying scumbags and I don't want to give them my money. Now I realize if I refused to buy from a dealer that lied to people, I would never be able to buy from any dealer.
So I at least expect that when I call them out, and let them know that I know they are lying to me, they back off and just work a reasonable deal. In this case I got them to agree to 7% off MSRP and then told them we would have a deal if they gave me the MF without the markup. They then stopped talking to me. So today I am working on a deal with another dealer.
That brings me to this.

I am no expert and you should take everything I say with a grain of salt. However I have been able to negotiate 2 very good lease deals and am about to close my third today with any luck. This thread was started to find the money factor and was likely not the best place to ask. This wasn't answered so I will try and help you out.
Never negotiate payments. Always negotiate out the door price. Dealers should be willing to work with you right now. Cars are sitting on lots for greater than 90 days. People cannot afford the current interest rates and sales are just slow right now.
This is my first time with any subaru, however it's my understand that it should be possible to get 7-8% off MSRP on new subaru. More than a couple dealers in my area are advertising foresters at 7% off MSRP.
Once you get to a price you are ok with you should ask what the money factor is on the lease. Money factor is what interest rates are called when leasing. Money factor is set by the manufacturer. You can ask here, by providing model, trim, and zip what the money factor should be.
I just learned in this thread that per subaru dealers are allowed to mark up the money factor up to .00050 over the set rate. To figure out the conversion to apr you can find a calculator. Be warned that dealer will lie about this.
Armed with the target of at least 7% and knowing your money factor should help you get a good deal.
Never put money down on a lease. You can walk out the door with your lease after only paying the first payment. All other costs can and should be rolled into the lease imo.
If you pay to become a supporter there (cheap) you get access to a lease calculator. That calculator can also tell you about local lease deals and what the money factor should be. Personally I wanted to verify from multiple sources the correct money factor to be 100% confident when negotiating. Every MF I was given by the mods here matched what that calculator said.
If you have any questions there is definitely someone better qualified to answer them than I am. I would suggest you start a new thread if you want to get good answers.
