That reconciles with my experience today. I took a Forester for a test ride and the sales associate said he could give me a better offer for 36 months.

If I want/need to exit the lease at 2.5 months, can I sell the car to a person/entity? If I sell the car for the residual amount, I transfer the funds to the bank/owner of the car. If I sell the car for less, then I must pay the difference to the bank/owner of the car.

I've heard early termination fees are astronomical. I'm trying to see if I can hedge my risk exposure in the unlikely, but potential case that I move in less than 3 years.

Yes, but you could have unintended sales tax issues, depending on which state you move to.
