I am thinking of buying a mini SUV. Those great like CR-V, RAV4 and maybe Nissan are among my top lists. I prefer CR-V, but don't like its look, especially its rare part. I feel this CR-V looks like a car for delivering the dead man when you look from the side.( Sorry for my language, I really don't know the name for this kind of car!)

I want to hear what you think of this concern. Any thoughts are highly appreciated!

    james, it's called a "hearse."

But I don't think the CR-V looks anything like a hearse.

Any idea what the price of the new 03 CRvs will be. Will EX be 22470 or will price increase...

Any reason to wait till 10000 miles for first oil change ?

I bought 2002-CRV-LX 3 weeks ago. The manual says that for the first oil change wait till 10,000 miles.

I was told that , during break-in period , lot of tiny metal parts gets chipped away and it is not good for engine to run with such particles and it is better to change the oil after first 1000 miles.

Now I am confused due to Honda's recommendation. What is the advantage of changing oil at 10,000 instead of 1000 miles ? If I change the oil at 1000 miles itself is there any harm ?

    Thanks,

    Ramki

The manual says 10K normal conditions, 5K severe conditions.

I'm one to follow what the manual says - after all Honda designed the thing - they know what is best for it.

My Dad plans on changing his at 5K in his 02 CRV.

Thanks for the responses on the hard spare tire cover. It sounds like painting them is a viable option. Bamahonda, did you get yours through Handa-Accessories.com?
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
Those tiny little metal particles are a thing of the past. Modern engines are built with much closer tolerance. That's why the old practice of changing oil after the 1st 1000 miles is no longer recommended.

I bought the hard cover through my local Honda dealer but it is the same as the one on the Handa-Accessories.com web page listed for 86.80.

I received a Thule roof rack for a suprise Father's day gift for the new CRV. I wanted an after market rack because they have many more accessories available than the factory racks. Honda had only a bike carrier as an option. Anyway installation was quick and easy. The Thule doesn't look nearly as nice as the factory racks. The factory rack is designed to fill the space on the rails where the covers are removed to access the bolt holes to secure the rack to roof. The thule rack leaves open space to each side. I'm also concerned with water getting in there and causing problems. I know someone else bought Thules on this site. What is your experience/feelings about how the feet attach to the car and how it looks? The rack also generates a great deal of wind noise. It is deafening with the moonroof in vent position on the highway. I may need a faring, but I'm not sure it will fit given the position of the moonroof being right in front of the front rack. I'm also not sure I'll like the way it looks either. Anyway, I'm trying to remind myself that the rack serves a function, its not for aesthetics.

Varmint: Yes, Upton Mass. Howdy neighbor.

For the gas mileage guys: Average mpg 24.1mpg and 23 mpg for first two tankfulls with mixed highway and city driving.

We have a ex. I didn't like its looks when I saw the first spy pics and I still don't like its looks. For me looks matter some but safety and reliability are alot more important (that is until I become a multi millionare). I bought the crv because it was safe, reliable and roomier than its competitors. Take a look at the tribute if you want looks, I think it looks great, but its not reliable so I passed on it. Bottom line is whats most important to you, looks or something else.

Do you like 02 CR-V look? Especially its flat roof line and big rear part, kind of wierd design, I think.

Anyway, what is your general opinion for this car?

    Thanks,

    James
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
James - For the most part, I like the look. I'm actually a bigger fan of the back end than the front. But looks are a personal thing, and, if they're important to you, then you are the only one qualified to make that decision.

UptonJohn - Sorry neighbor. Can't help you with the roof rack. I have the OEM one on my "99 model.

If you're ever near Mansfield or romping up and down route 95, keep an eye of for a Silver '99 with custom red tail lights in the back and a skidplate up front.

Hv1c - Yeah, I like the look of the Tribute, too. IMHO, that's the best looking of the bunch.

  • james_lixingjames_lixing Member Posts: 5
Could you tell me why you like the back end of CR-V? Because it can load two bikes or others?

I like its roomy, but for the bike, we can always put it in the roof.
  • bodydoublebodydouble Member Posts: 801
I think varmint meant he likes the LOOKS of the rear end, not so much the function. I too agree the back end, when view straight on, looks sharp, especially those Volvo-esque taillights. However, when viewed from the side, due to the height of the vehicle, the rear wheels look positively dinky.
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
I was never a fan of the last gen.'s tail lamps. It just looked incomplete. The 02 ones look complete, IMO.

I also think it would've been neat if, instead of having the spare on the back, Honda could've lengthened the back to match where the current rear spare protrudes. And then move the spare into the cargo area, like that of a passenger sedan and throw away that picnic table :)

    image
  • h1vch1vc Member Posts: 295
Is that a real pic or did you do something to it? Also I think the only reason a spare can't fit is because the storage isn't deep enough, not because the rear is too short.

If I go to JiffyLube or another speedy equivalent do you think I'll know to put in 5w20 or even have it? Thanks!

If you made that butt any longer it would fall over backwards!! Good photoshoping!
I agree though, I'd rather have the tire inside and also have a real bumper in the back.
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
James - Yes, I like the look of the back end. My only gripe is that the rear window isn't bigger for better visibility. I'm not a fan of the plastic cladding that sticks up on either side of thr front grill.

Frenchiee - Yes, they should have specs for your car. It wouldn't hurt to remind them, though.

h1vc - Correct. The length and width of the cargo area are big enough for a full diameter spare tire. It's the depth that would be a problem. The Fullmark (JDM model) without the rear-mounted spare has a space-saver donut. This is apparently thin enough to fit under the picnic table, but is still a full-diameter tire.

orangelebaron- I didn't think the butt was THAT bad. But I fixed it.

I'm thinking of buying a used 2001 CR-V. It has only 6,000 miles. I test drove it and also a 2000 with 17,000 miles. The 2001 seems somewhat sluggish from the start, and the 2000 is very peppy. Could it be that the 2001 is not really broken in yet?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
The rear looks better now that the taillights go all the way down to meet the bumper. The old ones had that odd sheet metal wrap-around look. The effect was more Lumina APV, now it looks more like a Volvo.

Of course looks are completely subjective. I prefer the front end of the old model, FWIW.

    Nice photochop.

At those mileages, both of them should be well broken in. If there is that noticeable of a difference in performance, maybe the 2001 is not only broken in, but broken! Were these cars from a dealer, or from 2 different private sellers?
  • klotonkloton Member Posts: 3
The 2001 was a trade-in at a Chevy dealer. It is in perfect condition. Drove the 2001 first, and it seemed fine. Drove the 2000 later, and noticed a difference in pickup. The 2000 is at a Honda dealer.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Sounds like production variance, some engines just have tighter tolerances.

It could also be that the slower one was heavier, did it have more equipment? Like a roof rack? Was the A/C on?

Other possibilities: fouled plugs or a lack of maintenance on the "slow" one. Maybe even non-OE wheels and tires.

Still, since you felt a difference, buy the 2000! Sounds like that other one was built on a Friday at 5pm. ;-)

You said the 2001 is in perfect condition, is there something wrong with the 2000? I would go with the 2001, less miles, newer and you were happy with it except for power. The first generation CRV's aren't known for power, that's why the went to a bigger engine in the 2nd gen. Unless there is a huge price difference I think the 2001 is a good choice IMO.
  • varmintvarmint Member Posts: 6,326
Maximx - The Fullmark is a model only sold in Japan. It includes stuff like NAV, VSC, reversible seats, and other toys.

    Varmint,

Is the Fullmark only a 1st Gen. Vehicle? Can any of those toys be ordered from a foreign dealer and installed in the US versions?
  • diploiddiploid Member Posts: 2,286
It's not even available in Canada or Mexico.

It's essentially a CR-V without the spare being mounted on the rear. I think its selling strength is in the aesthetics, although it still employs the swing out tailgate instead of a lift up one.
  • sluglineslugline Member Posts: 391
You can check out the current CR-V Fullmark here:

    http://www.honda.co.jp/CR-V/fullmark/index_flash.html

Keep poking around, and you'll discover a bunch of Honda species we're likely to never see. Personally, I think something based on the Fullmark would slot in very nicely in the Acura lineup. (Is Land Rover having any trouble finding buyers for the Freelander?)

Hello! This is my first posting!
I have the Thule roof rack for my 2002 CR-V and am trying to find out info on installing: there was a post(#7533) stating the screws stripped installing this same rack- any advice on installing with the screws so they don't strip? Also, a picture I saw of this rack on the CR-V shows that the channel is open to elements where mounted. I'm concerned about water laying in here and causing rusting problems? Any feedback?

Also, on post #7916 about having part ordered to fix window scratching noise when power windows go up and down: What's part going to do to fix problem? Do you have any scratches on the window being fixed?
When cleaning my power windows the other day, I noticed verticle lines on all my windows, and when it wouldn't clean off figured it must be scratching in the windows. The tinting in the back ones looked scratched off. I've never had power windows before, so when I had car in for servicing a month ago I asked if they were to rub going up and down. I was told they needed silicone put some where, and they would do it. Not sure if they did it since it wasn't on invoice after having everything done. Thanks!

When beginning to move or coming to a stop, or when driving slowly on uneven surface (=body torque), there is a crackling noise in the rear(?suspension). This is not the previously described brake clunk. Has anyone experienced this, and if so, what is it? Thanks.
  • muckyduckmuckyduck Member Posts: 219
I posted the part that is on order to fix window. msg #7916 - has not been installed as yet. But window is not making noise now!?!?
I have not noticed any scratches on windows. Will look more closely.

I talked to a Honda dealer in Chicago surburg last week, they asked $21,500 and 5.99%APR. Do you think this price acceptable?

    Thanks,

    James
  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
That sounds almost EXACTLY what happens in my dad's '02 LX. Really strange sound...like rubbing. He has to take it in to the dealer for some other things, so they're gonna get it looked at then.

I haven't had any responses from this forum on it yet though.

I've had my 2002 CRV for 7 months and I'm going to sell it next month. I tried to get by with the size but with two kids in car seats and 6'4" husband there is just not enough room. Long drives are not comfortable. I checked Kelly Blue Book Price prices on line but they had no numbers for the 2002. Was wondering if someone could give me some input regarding how much I show ask. It is an EX-Black with leather seats, chrome wheels, roof rack, sport package which includes tire cover/wheel locks and cargo net, fog lights, a security alarm w/lo-jack and it has 12,000 miles. If anyone could provide input, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

FYI: I checked Kelly Blue on a 2001 with about the same options and it came with a 23,000 + retail value (that seems high) and a 20,200 trade-in value.

Guess it's not old enough to be "used" yet on the pricing pages. In addition to what feedback you get here, try asking the dealers who hang out in the Any Questions for a Car Dealer? discussion.

If you can find a buyer who appreciates the chrome wheels, the aftermarket leather could be appealing to someone who would have installed it anyway. If you give them the opportunity to have the car today, instead of waiting for it, and also are giving them the chrome wheels and leather that they are looking for, I would think the 12000 miles shouldn't drop the value too much.

I think if you stayed in the ballpark of MSRP for the car without the aftermarket goodies, that would be a good place to start?

What are you considering as a replacement?

my car finally arrived, i've been reading the board for some time now and find it helpful in looking for some potiential problems i may encounter. my question is the salesman told me the first oil change should be at 7500mi. because
honda uses an additive sort of like a break in oil to that new oil and to leave in that long.
any advise would be helpful. thank you
  • tmanmiatatmanmiata Member Posts: 79
    carm3 -
The suggested oil change interval is 10K for normal conditions and 5K for severe conditions. According to Honda Ownerlink, your new CR-V is using a special oil and is recommended to keep it for the suggested interval. I think I am going to follow that. I have 5.5k so far. Since we have a relatively "cool" summer and have not had any 100F days yet, I am going to keep the oil until the weather gets hot.

My wife drives a 1999 CRV and loves it. Our son is turning 16 and we plan on letting him have that CRV. We are considering getting another CRV. Any comments on the new v "old" CRV? Will we be disappointed? Wife says she is happy with it and really doesn't want to consider a RAV4 or an Escape. Should we bother looking or just go with what we are happy with?
  • bascottbascott Member Posts: 27
I would go with what you are happy with. I have a 2002 CRV-EX and love it. If you love the '99' then I think you will LOVE the 2002.
