RWD with snows will work up here in the Great White North, FWD/AWD much better, especially with the appropriate footwear.
One point of light, many years ago I was a member of a ski house in Vermont. It was at the top of a long-ish, steep-ish road. Back when it snowed, members with FWD (such as myself with ancient "all-season" tires could make it up the hill. My friend with the Nissan 240sx, not so much. It angered him so that next winter he had an original (two door) Pathfinder. That worked so much betterer.

I can remember doing the snowstorm hill climb challenge with my 69’ Plymouth. I made it half way up before sliding back down. A little running start and I got 3/4 of the way. Finally I backed up a long distance and picked up some speed and got to the top swinging the back end back and forth.

Fast forward to modern times, I was given a 5.0 Mustang to take over the mountain in Vermont. The traction control on modern car makes even a RWD sports car easy to drive in snow.

After having it sitting unopened in its box for at least two weeks while I tried to get up the courage to tackle the job, I finally took on setting up a new Dell Windows 11 laptop today. It will replace an ancient Dell running W10 that MS won’t support after October and which has become increasingly balky and slow. I took the Win 11 upgrade a while back on another machine and hated it from day one, but I don’t use that one much so I’ve come to terms with it. This one was another awful experience with so many things being different and more difficult for no obvious reason. Tomorrow will be another day in the struggle to tame the worst aspects of it. Time will tell if any of it will work. Hard to understand how MS can keep getting away with this stuff.

@ab348 - both Apple and Microsoft tend to support their operating systems for laptop and desktop chipsets 8-9 years after the chipset first went on sale. In Apple's case, you usually won't get the latest OS for the last two years of that timeframe, and just get security updates for the last supported OS for those final two years. Apple's timeframe for mobile devices seems to be a notch shorter, not sure about other brands. I know even Amazon has committed to support the cheap Fire tablets for four years after they were last sold new.

What are your main frustrations with Win11? I really don't find it much different than 10. Yeah, there are a few things to tweak like getting rid of the centered task bar and the start menu is a bit weird.... but after that I find it more or less identical.

You touched on a couple right off the bat, the task bar position and the "start menu" that is really just a second desktop, not a menu. Change for the sake of change. Some of the issues are just new PC issues too, like a minuscule mouse pointer and overly sensitive touch pad. My biggest challenge will be I think moving files from the 13 y-o machine to the new one. So far they are not on speaking terms with each other.

The other W11 machine I use hardly at all so the quirks aren't a big deal. Most of them are little annoyances that don't work as well as they used to (see Snipping Tool or Photos). Like most Windows releases, the help resources available online are an odd mix of cheerleading, condemnation, and hobbyist tinkering with the inner workings (which I stay far away from) that really do not offer much help.

How much data are you looking to move? Personally I'd move it all over to One Drive and use the same account for both laptops and it will there on the new one and you can choose to download it local.

Other option of course is to share the folder and navigate to it over your network. That takes several steps...

    High level -

Make sure your wifi (or ethernet if hardwired) is set to "private network" (settings, network and internet) on both machines. Then go into the advanced settings on both machines and ensure that for private networks "file and printer sharing" as well as "network discovery" is enabled

From there (on the old machine) you right click any folder you wish to share, click properties and navigate to the "sharing" tab where you can name how you want it shared and select permissions.

On your new machine, you should then be able to browse the network (usually under your drive letters.

After you copy what you want you can lock it all back down by changing it to public network

    Hope this helps a bit.

Last time I got a new laptop (couple years ago) copying files was my big worry. Turned out since I had one drive active most everything came over once I logged in. Some other stuff IIRC I just copied into a thumb drive and uploaded to the new one. Whatever I actually did was pretty quick since I know I had everything right away and did not get all aggravated !

Thanks, but that's the part that I didn't mention.

I said the old 13 year old machine has been balky. For most of the last year it has not been visible on the home network. It used to be until it wasn't. I don't mess with that so I have no idea why. I can only assume MS did some sort of background change and broke it. Still trying to resolve that. I went through all those settings about networking again yesterday and they were already as you noted, but it still did not work.

The biggest issue is with OneDrive. I hate it after a bad experience with the other Win 11 machine shortly after I got it, when it tried to copy a bunch of files over from somewhere overnight and ran out of space. How that is possible I do not know but there you have it. When I discovered that it wanted me to buy more space I declined and somewhere in the process of doing that it deleted the files from the local PC. After that I swore off OneDrive as yet another untrustworthy MS product.

So yesterday after getting the new one set up somewhat I went off to do other things. When I came back to it later on, there was OneDrive doing its thing again. Somehow it found 2200 files from somewhere, no idea exactly where. Maybe they are the ones it deleted 5 years ago, who knows. I did some research and found a way to stop it from syncing and also to download the files. This AM I thought those files had also disappeared until I found them buried deep in a subdirectory of the OS. Good ol' MS, always making life more confusing, putting picture files in an OS directory. Anyway, I want nothing to do with OneDrive and will disable it in the least dangerous way. It seems like everything MS comes up with is designed to be difficult.

I hear your frustrations. I think the free version on One Drive is limited to 5 gigs or so. Google Drive also works well. Not sure of their size limitations .. but you could always sign up with a few different email addresses to get the storage you need.

PSA - and then I’ll get off my soap box. If any of you are storing files locally to your hard drive without cloud back ups. Especially irreplaceable pictures or documents. Please ..
Please…. Stop!! Use a cloud service as a backup. Older hard drives can fail without warning and while very reliable the newer SSD drives have been known to fail.

Can never hurt upgrading to the latest for security - only thing I'd check is to make sure there aren't any compatibility issues with your POS system before doing the upgrade.

My current laptop is running Win10, so I took advantage of Amazon Prime days and got a new laptop for less than $300.

Between OneDrive and a thumb drive, I moved everything over without incident. Even got my bookmarks and cookies to come across, so I didn't lose access to any websites.

Here's today's edition of Windows Weirdness, sponsored by Microsoft!

So as of this morning the 13 y-o Win 10 PC is suddenly visible on the network again! How that happened, who knows? But wait, there's more!!

I decided to do my morning browsing on it since I'm still not totally happy with the new machine. I use Firefox as a browser and have forever. I open it, and my bookmarks toolbar looks different somehow. I soon realize that things have shuffled themselves around overnight, and stuff is in different locations or not on the toolbar at all. Huh?

Even better, when I close the browser it takes me to the Win10 desktop, which now looks a lot like 11, with sections at the bottom offering news headlines and the like. It never looked like that before TMK. WTH is going on here?

I suspect I will have another tech issue to wrestle with soon. Probably several, like with peripheral drivers and the like, but one mountain at a time...

In setting things up yesterday I d/l'ed Firefox to run on the new machine and that was nice enough to populate it with saved passwords and the like. At least I think it did, but I can't be certain.

In doing all that, I discovered that Google wanted a password for Gmail and I wasn't sure what it was since you never need it after the first time you use it. Once I found it, it wanted to know if I wanted to set up a passcode, which I did. Those are tricky in my experience with Apple products, since they recently took away the passwords function I always used to rely upon to look up seldom-used passwords. Passcodes are nice when they work, but I suspect few people understand how they actually do it. I watched a couple of videos on the subject beforehand and I still have no idea. Firefox also keeps passwords but they seem not to update reliably when they get changed. The first time I try to do online banking on the new machine should be great fun.

Easier than networking, a couple of 128 GB usb's or a 256 GB for $23 (US). Copy everything onto there and then you have a permanent copy of whatever was on the old unit. Get a version with faster transfer speed and the new computer won't take as long to read it onto the drive, but likely your older computer, like mine, is a slower usb transfer rate. But mine gets it copied, albeit slower at times.

My home maintenance troubleshooting skill are slipping at my advanced age. As some of you may know, my house has a cistern. For some time I had noticed that the pump would kick on when no one was using water. I turned off the water to the house to see if the issue was the foot valve. Nope. I couldn't figure out where the water was leaking. No water stains, no leaky faucets, no toilets spontaneously kicking on. Hmmm. I was almost ready to call my plumber but I decided to check the toilets one more time. It turned out that one of the toilets had a leaking fill valve. :s Fortunately it was a Fluidmaster so it only took me a couple of minutes to replace the rubber gasket.

I never knew there were replacement parts for a Fluidmaster. The powder room on the first floor started making a squealing noise when filling about 2 weeks ago. I bought a new Fluidmaster unit but haven’t installed it yet. Maybe I should do some more troubleshooting before I go whole hog.

On my Win 11 expedition, I’m giving it a few days until the external keyboard and wireless mouse I ordered last night arrives. I was probably always going to get those, but the keyboard on this laptop is atrocious. So I moved that timing up so there isn’t something else driving me crazy.

No shortage of those things though. I tried to do a backup on the old Win 10 machine and instead of it showing me what I expected, a new screen appeared offering the option of transferring stuff to a new Win 11 machine. Maybe it sensed that one was here somehow, but great! So I try that, and it says here’s the name of your old machine, enter this on the screen that will pop up on your new Win 11 machine. Of course, nothing ever popped up there. The comedy never ends.

My Parent's neighbor nearly rear ended a school bus in his 98 Grand Marquis.... instead he swerved at the last minute and tore the entire passenger side of the car off along with a good portion of the bus. Either way the car would have been totaled but by side swiping it he may have saved his life. He hit it full speed due to being a two footed driver and getting confused. That was the end of driving for him.
