one thing I miss about living in NJ (especially in winter) is that now I have to get out and pump gas. Not that often at least with how few miles we drive, but it still stinks. Being able to do it in the garage instead would be nice.
You can still find full service stations around if you look. They cater to the old ladies who can’t take the cold.🤣🤣🤣
I had to have the truck towed to my mechanic after the AAA battery guy found mine was good (two years old). He even crawled underneath and wacked on the starter just in case but no luck. I hope it turns out to be something minor after only owning it 7 months.

I was looking thru my trunk yesterday and as I lifted the floor of the trunk, I noticed info about the adjacent lithium batteries. What the heck are lithium batteries doing under the floor of my trunk? So I called my dealership and was told the batteries were there to power the electric supercharger as well as to restart the engine when the on/off engine system shuts the engine down when at a traffic light. Who knew?
Electric supercharger? I thought superchargers were belt driven. Shows how little I know about my car.
Mercedes has used that technology on some of their AMG models since 2022. In short: The idea is to blend the quick response of a smaller turbo with the power-generating-capability of a big one. As with an F1 MGU-H, the electric motor is mounted directly to the shaft that connects the turbine and compressor wheels. The motor is driven off a 48-volt electrical system and starts spinning up the compressor wheel before exhaust gasses spin up the turbine.

It really doesn't take too much effort to get a tutorial on an EV, have they tried going online?
As usual, the equipment failure resides between the ears of the owner. I still read posts from owners about how their JL 4xe has an EV range of "only" 24 miles or so. I'm tempted to reply, "Hello? It's a PHEV you dimwit- what did you expect?"

I went through the contacts phase when I was in my 30s. Never had to endure the hard contacts but tried just about every variety of soft contacts to get one that worked and never really found it. By the time I got home from work each day they had to come out because of discomfort, and if you were outside on a dry, windy day or went out after work they quickly became unbearable. Then of course they always needed cleaning and storage once I got home at the end of the day until the next morning. A few times they came out in the middle of the day and even if you could find it you couldn't just put it back in without cleaning it. A total pain. I went back to the eye doc several times and they finally concluded that the shape of my eyeball was why I was having problems. The only ones that came close to being acceptable were the daily disposable ones which back then were pretty expensive to use. I abandoned them after a few years.
For me, the only good thing about them was they gave me the ability to wear sunglasses.
Had cataract surgery on both eyes about 3 years ago. Since I was 8 years old I’ve been nearsighted. After the cataract surgery, the lenses the ophthalmologist inserted caused me to become foresighted. So the corrective lenses in my eyeglasses (Varalux) are more for reading with slight corrections in the upper lenses for astigmatism and distance. I can actually drive now without glasses since the gauge cluster in my car is far enough away from my line of sight that I can see everything clearly.
I go in once a year for a checkup to make sure the cataracts are not returning and that my retina is healthy considering the fact that I am diabetic.
Cataracts do not return after cataract surgery. Cataracts are clouding of your natural lens. Your natural lens is removed and they put in a plastic lens when they do the cataract surgery.
So nice having a doctor on this site. All of us feel more secure about our health. 🤪😜👍

stopped at the local John Deere dealer today. after 2 times I am already tired of push mowing the lawn. Takes about an hour to do the walking part (haven't bothered to weed whack yet but that should not be too bad on this place). Not that I can't keep walking it even at my advanced age, but pretty sure it will really not be fun when it gets hot out! kind of borderline on needing a rider, so I wouldn't get more than a baby sized one. plus a compact will fit in the shed a lot better!
anyone have an opinion on mower brands? Is Deere still the gold standard, or just a famous name that isn't what it used to be? And for engines, is it worth $500 to upgrade from a Briggs and Stratton to a Kawasaki? Base models are not too expensive, but it can go up quick.
Stopped at Tractor supply to get mums, and they had a nice basic (I guess) Cub Cadet out front on sale. That looked pretty sharp, and was definitely cheaper. Plus it would make a matching pair with my snow blower (both Yellow). For my needs it would likely still be more machine than I really need. 18 HP and 42" deck. But I did not talk to anyone for details on it. At least at the Deere dealer, you get a pro to go over every option in detail. They have 3 model lines that could work (and a couple of HD ones that are way out of my league).
I have a Briggs twin in the Dixon and a Kawasaki twin in the Cub Cadet. No issues with either. That said, a JD or a Cub Cadet from a dealer (not a big box store) equipped with a Kawasaki would be my choice. And I'd definitely get a ZTR if I had the extra $$$. If you care what Consumer Reports thinks, they give high marks to both brands.

Harvard surprisingly has a lot of primary care reaidencies from their graduates.
Looking at it from an economic lens, is it still possible for physicians to work X number of years in an underserved (rural) area (likely as a PCP) and obtain student loan forgiveness? If so, it might explain that statistic.
@stickguy - the lower priced Deeres are going to be very similar mechanically to competing brands in the same price range. At my old place, I mowed a little over a half acre, and got the least expensive Deere rider that had the features I wanted (hydrostatic transmission and electric PTO). It was fine, but other brands are probably also fine.
With regard to the higher end Deeres, my parents have a 455 that they bought in the late 1990s. 3-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine and a 60" mowing deck. It still runs well, but it usually needs one medium sized repair per year at its current age. This year, it puked its coolant out. Thankfully, this was simply a bad thermostat (which was still the original!), and not a plugged radiator.

There are some areas where you can do that like Native American reservations. You can also have the military pay for your education - the down side being that you owe them 2 years for every one year that they pay for.
I did the college degree in three years plan and planned everything with time in mind. My dad died while I was in college. (SC medical school and Mayo Clinic residency ( I know - sub par) but worked in southern IN - figure that one out😂), mom had MVA and became paraplegic when I was in high school. Time was of the essence because everything suddenly became quite expensive.

thanks. the Deere guy recommended a 300 series (350?) even though he admitted it was overkill for me. The cheap option is the 100 series. Most likely I would get the 200 as a compromise. While living in SC in 1994, my next door neighbor got tired of playing around with his 2 year old John Deere riding mower and scrapped it for a Craftsman which he said was a LOT cheaper. I don’t think I ever saw him ticketing with his Craftsman till the day I moved back to the Burgh in 1997. Take that for what it’s worth. I don’t have a dog in this fight but that’s what I saw years ago.

I am no expert, but I have heard a lot of reports that the Craftsman name is just a name at this, and nothing like what the products used to be.
———————————————— By no means would I recommend buying anything with the Craftsman name today. Not even sure you can buy a Craftsman riding mower today. I was just commenting on my neighbors experience with a John Deere and a Craftsman many years ago.
If I were buying a riding mower today if I couldn’t get input from a neighbor or two I might have to rely on Consumers Report.

I have a John Deere X730 with a 54" deck and a Cub Cadet XT2 with a 46" deck. The Cub Cadet replaced a John Deere X330.
The Cub Cadet mows nicer than the John Deere, i.e. the grass looks better - smoother.
The John Deere is much more comfortable and easier to use if you are going to be mowing for hours at a time. Of course, it should be since it cost 3 times as much as the Cub Cadet.
I would say to look at the Cub Cadet XT1 with the 42" deck.

Better buy two while you can. Our illustrious governor is banning gas powered mowers soon.
As to engines I have a 17.5hp. Ariens 42” with the B&S that I bought used from Home Depot 8+ years ago. I have beaten the daylights out of it, mowing 5 or more acres. Way more than it was designed to do. This includes minor brush hogging and 2 foot tall grass. Still going strong with an annual oil change and spark plug every two years. Regular belt replacements as needed.
Two years ago I was sure the Ariens couldn’t last much longer so bought a D100 John Deere with the same engine. Only difference is the hydrostatic transmission which may last longer than a drive belt but no one will work on including John Deere dealers since the D100 is the cheap big box spec. If you buy that model be aware that if the drive system ever fails it will be about 5X more to fix assuming you can find anyone to do it.
For your lawn I’d get just a basic riding mower. With regular maintenance it will last longer than you will.

interesting. The unit they had on sale at Tractor supply was the 42" deck (I don't want bigger than that) XT1. $2,299. Seemed like a strong deal. I just can't buy it now since I won't have a place to put it until some time in November when my shed gets delivered. And I can't use it until next year anyway so not a rush. But I will keep those in mind when the time comes. I am guessing that the middle of the winter in snow country is not peak riding mower buying season!

Sounds to me like you need a small tractor with both a mowing deck AND a snow blower attachment. Why buy two when one will do? Probably more useful to you and far less expensive than a Porsche.

I believe @stickguy already bought a snowblower when he bought his previous house.
thanks all for mower input. I have plenty of time to research. Probably not buying until February.
I can't imagine getting a tractor, when you can mow the yard walking in an hour. Get the smallest riding mower you can get.
Like I said, it is on the borderline. Not that bad now, but in the summer when it is hot and humid, will really stink. It is more a luxury for me in my dotage so I can keep doing it. I do plan to get a smaller machine. Cub Cadet also makes sub-compacts with a 30" deck and the engine in the back. More of a glorified self propelled pusher that you can ride on. But that costs as much as the tractor style. I plan to stop at the dealer that carries that brand and scope them both out.

Like MJ said, I already have a full sized snow blower that can handle anything we are likely to get. you can get a snow plow also but the compact entry level machines really aren't designed to handle the snow attachments. At least from talking to the guy at the Deere store, he said you need to get up into the heavier duty models for that. and something with the RWD system on the cheaper machines, they can get stuck on icy spots easily.
We are now under a flash flood warning for the next 5 days with 8-14” of rain expected. The Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for counties surrounding Tampa and a Hurricane Watch for the southwestern and southeastern counties, which includes us here in northern Broward County.
I remember back in 2007 when Hurricane Wilma came in from the western side of the peninsula and hit us here in the northeast section of Broward County as a category 3 hurricane. These storms are quite nerve racking, to say the least.
today's haul from the treasure trove in the woods around my yard. 3 more tires that the wife spotted (there are another 3 at least a bit further out under a pile of branches, but those are going to stay there for a while!). a big wad of green wire garden fencing and one of the posts it attaches to. A big tin can that used to have water proofing stuff in it (very patina'd). And a roll of plastic planting bed edging and the pipe that goes with it (and some bigger diameter black plastic pipe that i had to cut into sections to pull out).
Oh, and the remnants of an artificial Christmas tree. The people behind us must have hated putting anything in the garbage (more likely, stuff they would have taken someplace or paid to get rid of!)
I was able to create an Experian account for my sister to check on all debts. That is incredibly helpful. Credit score 839 ( despite education at U Miami (hurricanes) and Indiana State)😇
I must admit that it was my wife’s idea and we were helped by niece and nephew and cell phone access

The idea is to blend the quick response of a smaller turbo with the power-generating-capability of a big one. As with an F1 MGU-H, the electric motor is mounted directly to the shaft that connects the turbine and compressor wheels. The motor is driven off a 48-volt electrical system and starts spinning up the compressor wheel before exhaust gasses spin up the turbine.

Cool story. What was the topic of his HP research? Is he an electrophysiologist? Interventionist?
Harvard surprisingly has a lot of primary care reaidencies from their graduates.
I’m just surprised that I was able to overcome such liabilities and still make something of myself. I was even chief of anesthesia which means absolutely nothing because no one wants that job.

anyone have an opinion on mower brands?

By no means would I recommend buying anything with the Craftsman name today. Not even sure you can buy a Craftsman riding mower today. I was just commenting on my neighbors experience with a John Deere and a Craftsman many years ago.
If I were buying a riding mower today if I couldn’t get input from a neighbor or two I might have to rely on Consumers Report.
