Ugh, the financial hits keep coming.
After spending the morning at the Audi dealer and getting the service/wash done for free, as well as enjoying the snack bar, I went to the Mall and only one of the two Shell/Volta L2s were functioning. Luckily for me, the Tesla M3 left shortly after I arrived and I plugged in to get 3/4 tank of free electricity.
Walked to Chick fil A, claimed my free sandwich (but had to pay for the waffle fries and drink, say what?!). Returned to the A7 and drove electrically to Kohl's where there were two Chargepoint chargers. Plugged in, went shopping for ~40 minutes but didn't buy (small Kohl's).
Here's where I set my finances back, it wasn't a free charger, I assumed (and we all know what happens when one assumes...) it was. So, at $1.25/hr my CP account was charged $0.94!
When will the madness stop!
Tomorrow begins the true 401k buster, M240 goes in for TPMS and rear diff work. Maybe the wife'll pay for breakfast.
Oh, and the fronts on the A7 are at 4/32, rear 6/32. So... $$$... I guess the madness never stops.
Maybe breld is truly a mad genius, never having to pay for new tires, oil changes, repairs... you know, do it to them before they do it to you?
Did that include the time that it took for you to figure out how to plug it in?😇

Should have gone to Indie and gotten ceramic brake pads and a better price

When I inherited my grandmother's phone in 2021, it was an 11. I replaced it with a 14 about 18 months ago due to the 11 just randomly dropping phone calls. I was really surprised at how much longer the battery on the 14 lasted in comparison! So, i guess the battery must have been reasonably degraded on the 11, even though it was only like 3.5 years old at that time. But, with a trade in, the 14 only cost about $300.

My brakes have 160K on them on the Cruze. My son drove it perhaps 40K or more while he had it. Don't know how gentle he was on the brakes. I've had replacements for the front pads and rotors for over a year waiting for the pads to finally wear through the friction material. It's the GM Mark of Excellence.

That issue with the differential is really odd. The only issue I've had with a diff is the front pinion seal on the Club Sport, which failed all too soon at 27 years.

My iPhone 15 is about a year old and has a problem with dropping calls, but with a twist. It only seems to do that in one particular location within the house. Naturally, that is in the comfy chair that I use when watching TV or scrolling on the iPad. It’s really annoying, needless to say.
Otherwise, it’s great. Screen is a useful size, the processor is snappy, and the battery life is great.
iPhone 13 Pro here, ordered when it launched. My battery is showing it has 89% of its original capacity (which it shows natively), and CoconutBattery says it had cont through 569 full charge cycles as of July of this year, which is the last time I plugged it into my MacBook (it doesn't show that natively, although I think the newer models might, hence the app). It's still working fine after three years, so definitely good for another year.
@ab348 - do you have wifi calling enabled, and how is the wifi signal in that chair? Maybe try toggling it on or off. I put two eeros in my house and a third in my detached garage, and have a great signal everywhere.
I'm not really a phone person. When the iPhone 16 topic came up, I had to figure out which one I have. I'm pretty sure it's a 14, bought over a year ago. For longevity, back in 2003, my kids got Samsung flip phones. When they got their next ones, had the top half that slid up to reveal a keyboard, I took over one of the Samsung's. Used it until 2014, when I got an iPhone and it went into the old phone box on a shelf. 2 years later, for some reason, we went through the box and when I hit the ON button, it still powered up!

I got the tires at the dealer because they were competitive with my usual place and I did go to the indie guy for the brakes. Ceramic pads on a Kia? That’s overkill. The engine will probably blow up before those wear out.

I looked and the option is not enabled because it isn’t even shown on the screens Apple support says should have it. There were some results when I searched for why that would be that it is something the cell provider could disable, but I wonder why they would care. Just another technological booby trap for me.
Farmer, do you know that you aren't supposed to drive with your left foot planted on the brake pedal? I don't know how you could wear out brakes on a small FWD car like that in 25K miles. Fronts would be hard, but I would think rears would be nearly impossible unless something was defective and they were dragging.

oh, the other bright idea. We will be short one real bed for a couple of days at Thanksgiving. so the solution is to just have the furniture store deliver the new bedroom set we reserved when we bought the dining room set. That would free up our bed to move into the extra bedroom. It is a very nice Amish built tank of a set, and we really want to upgrade to the king sized bed. Just a lot to spend (plus the cost of the mattress!) for a few days. But what the heck, can't take it with you, and did we really want to retire (the answer to that is heck yeah!)
at this point, we just want everything done and are going with the do it all so we can enjoy it sooner, and pay it off later!
My oldest brother (the guy who hates to spend money) is moving out of the house he and his wife have lived in since 1968 tomorrow. It has been just him and his wife there for about the last 35 years or so, and they are both in their early 80s and have health problems which have made it hard to keep things up. For the last 2 months they have been purging a lifetime of stuff from not only the living area but the basement workshop and his large garage. I honestly don’t know how they did it but the movers are coming tomorrow. He had so many tools and hobby items that the place was jammed. But they’re gone, either tossed or donated or sold. They’re moving into a brand-new apartment into a large unit.
I was talking to him tonight and I was concerned he might be sad or depressed or whatever. He said they were fine though, and didn’t sound like he was down. But it makes me sad. The end of an era.

I must have misread but I could have sworn that you had complained about how prematurely the Kia factory brake pads wore out.

So, just in case....
I sometimes drop calls (not due to weak signal) in my comfy chair, too! But, I realized that it is me! On my 14, if i press the side button, which normally just turns off the screen (or turns on the home screen, if it is already locked), it will end the call.
With the 11, it would just drop calls all by itself, nothing touched. It was random, though, and I couldn't put any rhyme or reason to it, so it wasn't something that could be diagnosed and fixed. As this 14 is actually the first phone I've ever bought, I didn't feel too bad about spending $300 on it. LOL

I felt the same way when my grandparents moved out of the place they had... also since 1968. They lived there for forty years, and my entire life, so I felt sad that they were leaving it. They didn't seem to miss a beat and were totally at peace with the decision.

Son just got the iPhone 16 ProMax. We did a comparison with my iPhone 12 ProMax including a speed test because of the 16’s new processor. Conclusion: the 16 is better, but only marginally so, and in real world use, that includes the marginally better speed. No rush for me to switch,
Agreed, and that is for all such cases. Only upgrade when "it is time," and then just get the newest one on the market that fits your needs. No sense in throwing good money after bad.
The wife and I both have iPhone 11's, and I asked her recently if she was interested in upgrading.
Her response? "It's not on my radar"
Guess I'll soldier along with what I have, for the time being.

Well, I found out I need a new HVAC system today: $8,800. So it goes.
I just talked to my sister a few days ago and she said that when the HVAC people came out to do the fall tuneup they discovered that something important (heat exchanger I think) had cracked so the exhaust was mixing with the incoming air. An automatic can't turn this thing on. I think it was about 20 YO now so she had to bite the bullet on a replacement (along with the AC unit since they were doing it all and that had previous issues and was original too I think).
My neighbor, who is retired and finds things to worry about, got all out of sorts because The Google told her the average lifespan of a gas furnace is 15-20 years, but hers was old enough to buy alcohol. She had her HVAC company come give a quote to replace it, and found out it would "only" (her word) cost $7,000. I tried to explain that, if it did fail, our houses are relatively small, and a few space heaters would keep things comfortable for several days until the repair person could get there, but to no avail. They were there a few days later proactively putting in a new unit.
She did the same Google life expectancy replacement thing with her refrigerator a few months later.

If you stay with the same carrier, you can usually find a deal. When I upgraded from the 8 to the 12 mini (after about five years), with trade-in, it was $1/month for 36 months.
Just 3 months to go! Can't wait to get rid of that payment!

Where did you fly out of? Did you have to make a connection?
When I read that, it made me think of my in-laws and I'm not assuming this is your situation. Do a lot of couples keep separate accounts? Every time we go out to dinner with her parents, the check comes and they both reach for their phones to calculate their portion of the bill. It gets to the point where we'll just grab the check and pay for it. It sounds like they split everything, mortgage, groceries, utilities, etc.
Thank you. I didn't even consider that.....until you just brought it up. Where's your mind? LOL!

We had that same issue last March. Replaced the upstairs HVAC system which only supports the only room upstairs, a bonus room which is 16x20. That is where I work from when I WFH.

I can’t imagine separate accounts! We have friends that do it. They even have their vacation homes separate. She bought the investment property in FL with her parents and he owns the trailer and land in the mountains. Seems so weird to me!
The only thing my wife and I have separate is our 401K (each other’s beneficiaries) and her work stock option account.

Did that include the time that it took for you to figure out how to plug it in?😇
Should have gone to Indie and gotten ceramic brake pads and a better price
Wife’s 12 pro max has really degraded battery so I just ordered 16 pro max’s all around

As I am extraordinarily cheap labor, that isn't really a factor.

Otherwise, it’s great. Screen is a useful size, the processor is snappy, and the battery life is great.

@ab348 - do you have wifi calling enabled, and how is the wifi signal in that chair? Maybe try toggling it on or off. I put two eeros in my house and a third in my detached garage, and have a great signal everywhere.

The engine will probably blow up before those wear out.

oh, the other bright idea.

I was talking to him tonight and I was concerned he might be sad or depressed or whatever. He said they were fine though, and didn’t sound like he was down. But it makes me sad. The end of an era.

I always like tire store because they usually offer lifetime balancing.
I must have misread but I could have sworn that you had complained about how prematurely the Kia factory brake pads wore out.

LOL
You’ve gotta stop asking questions when there’s the chance you don’t want to hear the answer.

I’m pretty stingy with my phones. Kept my 6+ till the microphone died. Bought an XR and kept that until a few months ago when the touchscreen died. Bought a 12. Not a big upgrade but, from what I read, the 13 and 14 didn’t have upgrades worth the extra money to me. My self-imposed limit on a phone is about $400.

If there is anything that is an improvement from the 12 to a 15 or 16 it’s the camera.
We were on a boat ride yesterday and the pictures I was able to get with zoom were really incredible

I’ve been playing with the various settings and took a few really good shots. Got a pic of my mom and son that looked darn near professional.
All those pics above I took on a boat going 30 MPH. Phone is a 15 Pro Max

I took this from the Belle of Louisville last night. Out of about ten pics, this was the only one that got both the white balance and focus decent.
American has a direct to Turks. Works out so well for us. 3.5 hours and we are here.
We are with a group of 13. We loved our tour so much yesterday we all chipped in and have a 6 hour fishing (catch and cook) private tour today.
Boat is a 35’ Catamaran with twin Yamaha 400s. Should be another fun day. We leave shortly.
Since my Mom can’t do the boat we got her a spa treatment.

I can’t imagine separate accounts! We have friends that do it. They even have their vacation homes separate. She bought the investment property in FL with her parents and he owns the trailer and land in the mountains. Seems so weird to me!
