The push to be broke before retirement continues. Fence goes in Thursday so more $ into that. Signed up for the custom closet guy to come out in 2 weeks to do out pantry. And our fancy new mattress should get delivered in the next 2 weeks, which means we need to pay for the rest of the new bedroom set to have something to put it on.
At this rate $.88/lb turkey will be too rich for my blood.

true. and some of this is deferred enjoy it while we can. The bedroom set we are replacing is 39 YO now. Got our money's worth out of it. And we really wanted to upsize to a king bed.
the rest of it is just factored into the price of the new house. Which we should still have quite a bit of profit equity in.
we did buy the $.88/lb turkey tonight. A tiny little thing at 19.75 pounds. Broke my wife's heart to not get 24 lbs. Going to need a turkey breast too to make it work.
Met the people behind us finally yesterday and today. until now could hardly tell the old people lived there (the back was all overgrown and they never came out the back door). Today my wife got all worked up because there was a guy messing around in the woods (and she was sure he put some sticks on our side of the line!) So I had to go out and snoop. Turned out to be the son of the owners up from Atlanta to visit and door things around the house. Owners are original (they built the house in 1972) and are now mid-80s and the husband had a stroke some years back and is not very mobile. So explains not seeing them.
the son ended up clearing out a ton of the overgrowth on their side (up to where I had cleared out already) and even did some of ours (it is a weirdly shaped lot). looks way better, but took out some of the limited privacy cover. Once the fence goes in, we need to find something to put in front of it to help with that! But we are going to end up with a lot more reclaimed yard space than I expected.

I believe I mentioned that my oldest brother and his wife sold the house where they had lived since 1968 and moved into a brand-new apartment building not too far away from me. I got to visit them there earlier this week. The building itself is nice enough although the underground parking garage is one of the tightest I've seen with lots of columns and narrow lanes. The building itself is nice enough and they have a large apartment with 2 BRs, 2 baths and a den although it is mostly open-plan. What struck me was how their old furniture absolutely does not suit the place. Much of it is from the 1960s and even the newer stuff is from the '80s. It is all very dated in that large glass box they now reside in. Even they accept that they need to buy new stuff.
I failed the be the guy contingent today. Went to put up a new dining room fixture Sunday and couldn’t figure out the tricks to get the thing assembled and installed. It was one of those variable length ones where you screw together pipes to the length you want then fish the wires up through it. Then through the threaded pipe in the box bracket. With instructions that were awful, working with 9’ ceilings. Got to the point I was afraid of breaking it so threw in the towel and called the electrician that did the whole house. Took him about 15 minutes to have it up but at least now (since I watched) I know how it is supposed To be done!
Side benefit, for the same service call fee, he installed 2 dimmers into the 4 switch box that I also was not looking g forward to doing.
Might have cost me some $ (though these days it was chump change) but at least they are done, safe and look good. With done being the key!
The painting has begun. The living room and dining room are torn up (art and window coverings were taken down), and my stepdaughter is currently painting the living room.
Much better quality paint than the builder grade stuff that was sprayed on when the house was built 8+ years ago, and the white really pops when compared to the old color.

You should have got him to install some 3-way switches on spec while he was there since no DIYer can ever do those right.

Here’s a few painting tips you might want to show your daughter:
We have at least 1 3 way switch. Many 2 way. One dimmer was on a single, the other on. 2 way. Both in a 4 switch box. Those are a huge hassle getting everything in and lined up again, especially with a dimmer switch (in this case 2 of them) jammed in.

A 3-way switch is nothing more than a single pole double throw switch with the pole contact being the common contact that selects one OR the other of the 2 remaining contacts but NOT both at the same time.
Contrary to popular belief, if you’re changing a 3-way switch in a previously correctly wired 3-way circuit, even if you wire it incorrectly (which a lot of DIYers do) you will not trip the breaker but if miswired, the circuit will not work as it should.

No, a three-way has two separate switches (the third "way" is the lighting itself). A four-way has three separate switches.
A normal light switch (single switch) is a two-way.
————————————————- Correction: A 4-way switch (as used in a house to control a light from 3 different locations) has 2 not 3 separate internal switches contained in the single switch unit with one external toggle to operate both switches at the same time.
The internal makeup of a 4-way switch is too complicated to explain here with words. But let me just say the major part is that a 4-way switch is nothing more than a double pole double throw, no center off position switch with 2 of the switches 6 terminals not having external connection terminals. Plus 2 internal jumpers to the non-pole contacts. Like I said a little complicated without a schematic of the switches internals.

Fun fact ..4 way switches (3 locations) actually use two three way switches and one four way.
Yes J - if someone screws up a three way the light will still work but it will only turn on from one switch…meaning that if you turn it off it will not be able to be turned on from the other location.
Common (see what I did there..) mistake is not paying attention to the dark screw on a three way. The dark screw is the common (hot) wire. That must be remain in the same spot. The shunts (or travelers) can be on either of the shiny terminals.
Fun fact … a four way is wired identical to a three way except you insert a four way switch in the middle of the circuit and connect the travelers to it.

I feel your pain with all the switches. When we moved it took me awhile to figure all of them out.
Each room has a minimum of a four gang box. Outlet, led cans, ceiling fan, ceiling fan light.
Our family room / kitchen must have 30+ switches.
One thing that drove everyone crazy was the switched outlets. Took a month or so but finally realized any outlet that was installed with the ground up is switched. The ground down outlets are hot all the time.
I do have another fixture to replace myself. Would have had that done too but we didn’t get one yet (wife’s plan was to get a ceiling fan for the guest room and once I put that in take the fixture currently there and move it down). I just don’t remember how the wires differ at the
Light fixture when there iare 2 switches connected to it. Which is why I had them leave up the very unattractive bare bulb fixture in the office figuring I would just look at the current fixture and make sure the wires got connected to the new one the exact same way.

That must make it tricky for outlets where the top is always hot but the bottom one is switched.

We had that issue too. Only fixed when we remodeled the downstairs. Now all the switches are in logical places and actually work the way they are supposed to.
Day 1 of painting is complete - the vertical walls in both the living room and dining room are done. Not sure what the plan is for today - likely the kitchen and hallway.
Ceiling and the walls in the stairway to the basement will get done when my daughters best friend shows up to help after Thanksgiving.
The nice thing is that she's put the rooms back together immediately after painting, so the house isn't a complete disaster.

If I was ever to build something from scratch I will go full smart switches and outlets. Just pick up your phone and turn on/off anything you want.
I’ve looked into converting my house but it’s a substantial cost and a ton of work swapping all the switches. They require neutral wires so you basically have to pigtail everything and redo the entire box.

Whenever I try smart systems, something goes sideways and I end up wishing that I had not. Something ends up not passing the signal because hardware does not work well.

Light fixture when there iare 2 switches connected to it. Which is why I had them leave up the very unattractive bare bulb fixture in the office figuring I would just look at the current fixture and make sure the wires got connected to the new one the exact same way.

Of course, it would have to be a Buick, and it would have to be Ohio license plates.
