I could use a little help from any of you guys who have apple phones. Since I installed the latest update on my iPhone 16, (18.1.1) last week, I've had awful problems with my emails. I get no alerts and have to manually open the MAIL app and/or refresh the app to get my emails. Have any of you had similar problems with your phones since the update last week?

Last nights Dolphins loss to Green Bay seems to reinforce the belief that the Dolphins just can't win a game in northern stadiums when the temps drop into the 20's and teens. Most unfortunate for us down here, but it is what it is - they are a WARM WEATHER TEAM and have no chance of ever winning another super bowl.

Don’t give up. I say the Dolphins have a better chance of winning a Super Bowl than the Steelers do with Mike Tomlin as their head coach.

Painting update. My stepson was in town so his sister bribed him with a full Thanksgiving dinner to help with some of the tougher spots- namely, the ceiling in the hallway and also the wall where the stairs to the basement are.

Pretty good progress was made, but I had to order another 5 gallon bucket of the wall paint.

Stepdaughter worked on trim most of the day today - I’ll see what kind of progress when I get home from work.

    Old Man Grey?

For those keeping track, it made it through LA traffic to the hotel. Decently equipped, has BLIS and seems to have LED headlights and rear parking sensors. I saw multiple idiots in Nissans leaving the rental lot without flipping the headlights from "off" (the rental companies seem to switch them off as part of their clean-out process) to "on," which appears to provide front DRLs, but no taillights. I've said this before, but GM and newer Fords do this correctly--the lights default to auto on/off every time the ignition is cycled.

Toyota and Subaru (possibly Honda; maybe some others?) do it best, and have for many decades: Just switch the lights to 'on', and, any time you start the car, all the lights come on. When you shut it off, the lights turn off as soon as you pull the key from the ignition. It's a simple, yet brilliant, design. It is too bad so many owners are too dumb to understand it.

It’s not just renters who do that. I see many cars running without taillights because the person had them set to auto.

I don't touch anything in the A7; it is much smarter than me.

Made it home with little fanfare (or somewhat surprisingly, traffic) Friday. GPS wanted to head north in NJ to the Tap, but as expected, MIL became agitated noting that's not the way WE go. And the two other ladies in the car were in agreement. So, had I listened to GPS likely I would be posting from a hospital bed today.

I mis-typed above... The Altima (and I assume other Nissans) have an "auto" position and it will turn on the taillights--the problems is that if it's flipped to "off," the DRLs stay on, but no taillights.

Another sad comment on the state of Jaguar, from Hagerty:

"The first evidence of this reinvention has broken cover across Jaguar’s social media. The brand’s new slogan is “Copy Nothing,” which is ironic as the initial advertising campaign looks like something Benetton might have tried during the ’90s."

I am very sad, actually! I like this kind of stuff! Here is my front lawn in Conneaut at this moment (the little bush peeking out of the snow at the fore of the image is a rhododendron that is normally about 8' tall and 12' across).

Indeed! I've been in Buffalo during one of those record-breaking (at the time, not sure if it still stands) snowfalls (December 21, 2001). It is truly a sight to behold! We got there early. There was only about 16-20" of snow on the ground by the time we made it into the Edinboro area, where the snow was substantially less (perhaps 8" total, versus 84"+ in Buffalo).

My son wanted to go to the UL-UK game for his birthday. Temps hovered around freezing. It only felt really cold when the cloud cover moved in and the wind picked up. I bought a parking pass on StubHub for way too much money. As it turned out the lot wasn't patrolled and the security guard didn't even ask to see my pass. Afterwards we went to Joe B's and we got to watch South Carolina beat Clemson. So it was a good day all around.

Simple: Just turn the switch to off, then back to on; they will stay on until you switch them off (or next insert/remove the key).

I think the biggest problem with the head lights is knowing to turn them on, not off. The last few years I have seen more folks driving without their lights on than I ever saw years ago. Needless to say that is a very unsafe way to be driving at night. Years ago when got in the car and started it at night if you couldn’t see your dash lit up you knew you didn’t have your lights on. Today with the digital systems the dash lights are always on even during daytime driving. The reason you can’t see them is because the daylight is brighter than the dash lights. IMO, there is no reason why the system can’t be programmed to keep the dash lights off at night until you or the auto-lights-on switch is turned on.

One of the first things I told my Sons when I taught them to drive was if they couldn’t see the gas gauge at night, they should turn the lights on. Pretty simple but it worked.

The Audi A4 I had (with always backlit gauges and fully manual headlights) would do just that. As it got dark, the gauge illumination would dim. If you still left your headlights off, the illumination would turn off completely. I think the needles on the gauges would remain lit, providing a visual cue that the car was still on.

    That’s getting a little
cute/sophisticated but i can see how that should work. If Audi can do that, all the other manufacturers should be able to at least keep the gauges unlit until the lights are turned on.

Why is it that auto manufacturers seem to be able to fix things that ain’t broke but have trouble fixing things that are broke?

Maybe the highway safety folks and or the insurance companies should do something about this. Like the old saying goes, “We have the technology”.
