Did you recently rush to buy a new vehicle before tariff-related price hikes? A reporter is looking to speak with shoppers who felt pressure to act quickly due to expected cost increases; please reach out to PR@Edmunds.com for more details by 4/24.
Having been laid off a couple of times, I'm certainly familiar with the sharp end of the stick.
But, I did have one employee who was looking for a substantial raise - he lived in Mexico and was hired to perform training for Central and South America, which he did well for the first 5 of 6 years of his tenure.
Then, that business dried up and he started spending more time in the US and Canada teaching our clients there.
When you compared his salary to that of the US based instructors, it came up woefully short. I worked with our HR partner to convince our management that we would lose him if we didn't attempt to match salaries (this was after we had laid off some of our instructors for cost cutting purposes).
He got the raise, but, sadly, ended up leaving the company not long after I was laid off.
Software transitions are always fun. My entire company (10,000+ employees) is undergoing a monthlong hiring freeze while HR transitions to new software.
So many questions:
If you can get by for a month without hiring anyone, why do you have so many people in HR supposedly doing that?
Is the company supposed to serve the needs of the HR department, or the other way around?
Full disclosure: I have a very low opinion of HR as a support service. For my entire work career every one of those depts I encountered just caused problems rather than solved them.
And they are totally on the company’s side not the employee’s.
I like when a company buys out your company and tells you not to worry, all the jobs will still remain, we need everyone. Once they move in they start to get rid of any duplications. That is when HR comes into play......execs don't have to do the dirty work.
I have been canned from 6 jobs.....can anyone top that? The first time I was canned I was 19 years old working in a warehouse picking orders. The guys went out for lunch on payday, which was every other Friday. When we got back there were about 8 in line to get our cards time stamped. I was near the end of the line and one guy did my card - I didn't ask him to do it. The supervisor saw him do it and fired me. I went up to the main office and asked to speak to the president. I explained that I was a student completing two courses and would be going back to school full time in 3 months. He reinstated me. It did teach me I didn't want to work in a warehouse. btw....that was before computers. It was a warehouse for hardware stores. To do inventory you walked around with a desk and counted inventory....like it could be 1053 screws, 546 bolts etc., this was before they did reordering when you reached a minimum. Mind numbing work!!!!!!
I always dreaded being unemployed so I tended to stay at jobs longer than I should have and usually only quit to go immediately to the next one.
Paper route: quit. Dishwasher at Howard Johnson’s: quit before I died of heat stroke. Lawn mower: retired to go to collage. Sandwich maker: quit for the next job. Car wash operator: quit because I was now college edgumacated. Youth Counselor: temp. job with the Youth Corp. Director of social work services: federal funding ran out. Outreach worker for Food Stamp program: left for next job. Social worker for a health care company: fired because of my refusal to participate in some questionable activities but that’s another story. Farmer: my longest running job. Retired. School bus driver: retired Mobility specialist (car jockey): current and most fun job. May only retire feet first.😅

@oldfarmer50 At least you left most of those jobs voluntarily. I actually got canned, mostly because of downsizing, but at least one was a personality clash. I was manager of a bookstore part of a large chain. My district manager was a jerk who gave me more things to do than I could possibly do, so he canned me. I talked to the vice president and he said he couldn't reverse a decision made by the D.M. About a year later I saw that D.M. stocking shelves in a grocery store...ha ha. And I got a great job that didn't pay a lot but I was a sales rep for a major book publisher, and I got the job mostly because of the excellent reference the vice president of the bookstore chain gave me.
I know others commented a while ago but I saw a Tesla Pick-Up truck live and in person today, wow, are those things ever ugly. It looks like a part that fell off of some kind of stealth jet:
I've seen them in a red, a strong blue, a light silver, a dark silver..., and none of them appeal to me. I see the owners standing next to them with the doors open for the curious to inspect the interiors, looking as proud as could be. I would be a little embarrassed at having spent so much money on that thing when I could have had a Chevy. LOL

You are partly right JMonroe, they are selling well in the EV market, although it is a small market, less than 5% of the total vehicle market. Average cost is about $116000. You'd have drive a lot to get savings from not using gas!

True, the people who buy them probably never put anything in the cargo area....might get it dirty!!!!!
I wonder if some folks buy them on speculation that if discontinued the value might go up?
I was passed on I75 heading to Cincinnati two weekends ago by one. I think it was the blue. It was unusual. I hate to say it but it reminds me of the Pontiac Aztek. I don't want to besmirch the Aztec even thought I'm no longer a Mary Barra/GM fan.
Just for old times sake, here's a gas pump fire last week at an area Krogers store. Truck on fire. I'll bet some underwear needed changing after that event!
Claims on discussion that no attendant is at the pump area like other Krogers, so the fire wasn't put on alarm as quickly as it might have been. I see a booth for an attendant; don't know if they've gone to no onsite monitor.
Triggered the fire retardant system. Theory by one poster is that the person was pumping gasoline into a can on the bed. The gasoline flowing produces a static charge and with a discharge just right, flaming gas. Works like a van de Graaf generator. Always put cans on the ground.
I would guesstimate that 99% of gas stations locally are self serve w/o an attendant aside from a person inside the convenience store attached manning the register. We don’t have fires at the pumps.

I thought someone had to be around in case a physically challenged person needed gas. We have friends who are both in wheel chairs. It may be a Florida thing, they love being in Florida because almost everything is wheelchair accessible.

Nope. Only lost 3 real jobs. All the others I quit before it got worse. I definitely would have lost at least 2 more if I hadn’t pulled the trigger first. And I survived countless layoffs in between.

It seems people want something different and they want to be on the leading edge. They are fast with lots of HP, and lots of room inside. They are supposed to go 325 miles on a charge, and it takes 45 minutes to charge to 80%, which I assume gets you about 250 miles. It might work for some people for certain situations..... I kind of agree with the Aztec comparison, mainly because both are trying to look edgy and futuristic.
Aztek - classic case of involving a focus group of consumers AFTER it's too late to make major changes to the styling. I'm sure the marketers came back with something mealy-mouthed like "it's polarizing" rather than risk their jobs by telling upper management that it would flop.

stations near me all seem to have some sort of convenience store connected to them. And the only people I have ever seen working there are running the store. They do have monitors for the gas, and you can go in to pay case if you want. But zero chance they are coming outside to put it in for you!
