My favorite example in this area is that the people entering an interstate with folks going 65 come on the ramp at 40 and expect to be let over without hitting their gas pedal to get to 62 to merge. Then they continue at 55 for a half mile as folks pass them on the left. Suddenly they accelerate to 65.

also picked up a 2 pack of furnace filters (the one in there was never changed and not sure how long it ran since the furnace was installed in March, so about time. It did look pretty fuzzy). Of course it is one of the harder to find fat ones. 16x25x5. I noticed with the Jersey house that most places sent 4" when you asked for 5". Lowes had 2 options, a 5" and a 4" (as labeled). So I compared them, and the 4" looked bigger. read the 5" version (forget the brand) was actually 4 1/4" thick. the 4" one (Filtrete), was 4 1/3" so actually fatter. Very weird

I meant to get back to you about this:

I also have a furnace filter that is 16X25X5 (nominal size). I bought a two pack from an online outfit (Nordic Pure) that has actual dimensions of 15 3/4 X 24 3/4 X 4 3/8 with a MERV rating of 10 and costs around $55 for 2 including shipping. I’ve used them for a little more than a year now and I’m happy with them.

So, speaking of new drivers and permits and such, I think you all know I'm still trying to find my next "professional" adventure.

In the meantime I've been working part time at Walmart - which has been good for my health (walking 3-5 miles per shift), and I've just started another part time gig as a driving instructor. Yep, riding around with teenagers and showing them the ins and outs of how to navigate our roads. The company is family owned and it's been an adventure, to say the least.

The fleet is comprised of a number of Chevrolet Cruzes' and Ford Focus' (yes, with the dismal DCT transmission). A second brake pedal has been added to the passenger side, and I've only had to use it a couple of times in the 2 months I've been working there.

The State of Colorado insists that before drivers get their permit they must attend 30 hours of classroom training, either in person or on-line. Then, they must hold their permit for 12 months, and complete 6 hours of certified training (that's where I come in), and 50 hours of documented driving time with their parents or other responsible adult party - 10 of which must be completed at night.

I'm sure you all have a bunch of questions - fire away!

OK, here is my question, why is it that apparently some cars do not have gas pedals?
Well, I was thinking that the questions would be related to my post, but apparently not with this crowd.

If the car has hand controls for a paraplegic driver, then no gas pedal is necessary. I went to college with a guy whose legs were paralyzed in a rodeo accident as a teenager, and he drove a Regal Type-S (not the ultra fast one) that had hand controls.
My question was due to the fact that I had a procedure done on my back today and we kept on getting behind cars that took over a city block to hit 30 MPH. They apparently had no gas pedals. And to make matters worse many of them were performance cars.

Do I have to bring out the sign?

Sorry, I've just spent the afternoon with new drivers, and I tend to interpret stuff I see here a bit too literally.

So, if they had no gas pedals, how did they get from 0 to 30? Gravity? Shove from behind?

As part of our driving sessions, I will take our students out onto the interstate. The first thing I tell them is to accelerate to a speed that allows you to easily merge into traffic (60-65 MPH, generally).

I think these were about that price for the 2 pack. MERV 11 which is the same that is in there now. I need to measure the current one though to compare to the new one.

High MERV # filters make your HVAC system work harder.
The general philosophy on that is that your HVAC is not an air purifier.

From what I’ve been told by several HVAC guys is that a MERV rating of 10 is just a little above the average of 16 which used to be the highest. I don’t know what it is now.

I agree that the higher the MERVE rating the more the system has to work to get good air flow through the filter but if you don’t have any filtering what’s the point of installing a filter? Like anything else, you have to use a little common sense when you select things. Just like the HVAC guys, I consider anything around the mid point as a good compromise.

We have two kinds of special needs equipped cars. One with hand controls just for the brake which is ok to drive, you just have to make sure your foot doesn’t slip off the brake pedal. The other is more complicated and requires you to drive two footed which if you drive in the usual right foot style makes it difficult to coordinated gas and brake.

Well they almost got that shove from behind. I was a wild trip to the doctors as we saw multiple flagrant traffic law violations. We saw to cars run through stale red lights actually going into the oncoming traffics lanes to go around stopped traffic, One guy making a left turn on a red light and just missed being hit by oncoming traffic. One guy waiting to make a left turn in the left lane even though there was a wide median lane for him to make the left turn from and a couple of idiots that were passing on the shoulder of the expressway which had smooth running traffic. Man was it a fun day to drive.

When I was in drivers ed the car I was assigned to was a special needs car with all the hand controls. Since we had a paraplegic taking drivers ed at the same time they had the seat set for him and we were told not to change the seat settings. Now me being 6 foot 2 needed a crowbar to get behind the wheel. :/

My VPN got me kicked off Edmunds yesterday, so I'll post this a day late. On November 18, 1995 I picked up my Club Sport from Fields BMW in Chicago.

To commemorate 29 years of ownership I drove it to work yesterday. It is still a whole lot of fun to drive. The Turner/Conforti chip wakes up the M42 four cylinder a bit and the five speed manual is the finishing touch.

Good memories RB....My wife has had her 2013 Lexus LX for 12 years, I've had my 2016 Lexus LS for 8 years. They both have basically the same V-8 engine. For us, nothing else on the market today compares.

Epic is an electronic health record (EHR) software company, and yes, one of their offerings is MyChart for patients.

There are a bunch out there (Cerner is another one) but widely held in healthcare that the best is Epic.

The cartoonish theme of their website threw me.

Up here the govt has spent huge sums of money and untold years of wheel-spinning trying to get to the one record, one patient nirvana. They're getting close, Ward, close (1941 movie reference for those who would have missed it). They have recently released a public-facing app that lets us look at test results, inpatient stays, etc going back many years. I don't really want to look at all that. They say they developed it internally which scares me knowing how bad govt IT is here. But to their credit I haven't heard any horror stories so far.

Way back when, I spent a few years working in this sector. The problem then was getting medical providers to stop writing things on paper instead of keying them. I don't know how they have solved that but maybe time took care of that for them as younger doctors entered the system.

We had this odd mist yesterday. It was, perhaps, around ten degrees F (let's say -12C), yet this freezing mist would slowly, but persistently, ice over the windshield. My defroster could only manage to keep two small spots, perhaps the total size of saucer plates each, clear. So, I had to contort myself to see the road, had no peripheral awareness, and still had to stop a few times to scrape the windshield to sort of reset the accumulation.

    Very odd day.

Bless you for doing the Wally World gig. When I retired I dreaded the prospect of working there in retirement. I was the “guy” when it came to teaching family members to drive. I really enjoyed that. Seeing a young person going from scared to start the engine to passing the road test on the first try was very rewarding.
I'm not "retired" - officially, at least. I'm still putting out applications, but I'm not getting a lot of traction.
I have been away for a few days but I am with you brother. When I was teaching school I volunteered to teach driving to high school students. The Automobile Club gave us a course in how to teach driving to students, in the car and in a classroom. From a teaching standpoint, it was nice to teach a subject where the kids were motivated to learn.
I had to reach over and help steer a few times, I didn't use the passenger side brake very often.
I have had worse jobs than that over the years.
btw, I thought it was voluntary work....but they paid us for it...a bonus.

I received a call from a headhunter a few weeks ago saying that they found my resume online. If they found my resume online it is almost 20 years old. Anyway since I am retiring in 3 years 0 months and 10 days I decided not to look for another full time job ever. Anyway I could see the interviewer asking where do I see myself in 5 years and me replying "Fishing". I think that would kill the interview right there and then.
If someone said they wanted to hire me for a job I'd say, "Are you out of your mind?" I'd never hire me to do any job....I have no motivation to actually work any more. My motivation is to play tennis and pickleball, not much else.

How about advanced left turns, where the 1st guy is so slow only 2 cars get through when 8 cars could have got through.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try Meguiars next.

I had that problem with the gray leather on a Ford Escape I bought for some odd reason. I finally just sat on a towel. That's one of the reasons I only had it for 6 months.

I asked the same thing months ago and never got a reply.

This was the "staining leather seats with blue denim" conversation.

Pro tip: don't try to clean denim in your dishwasher. Or leather seats.

@xwesx I have had that problem (blue jean stains) in my 2012 bmw....with light beige interior.
With the E400 I had stains in my upper leg area of the seat from sunscreen. What a mess.
I called a guy who actually paints over the stain. It was like magic how he used a few colors and made an exact match. It wasn't perfect but looked pretty good.
Now I bought a cover that just goes over the seat part and is held tight by elastics and clips...got it on Amazon for about $20. It doesn't look too bad but if it helps save the seat it is well worth it.

Supposed to switch to Epic in 2027

Software transitions are always fun. My entire company (10,000+ employees) is undergoing a monthlong hiring freeze while HR transitions to new software.
    So many questions:

If you can get by for a month without hiring anyone, why do you have so many people in HR supposedly doing that?

Is the company supposed to serve the needs of the HR department, or the other way around?

Full disclosure: I have a very low opinion of HR as a support service. For my entire work career every one of those depts I encountered just caused problems rather than solved them.
And they are totally on the company’s side not the employee’s.

From my perspective, HR exists mainly to handle employee terminations and to do “salary studies” to reassure everyone that our pay scales are extremely competitive every time someone leaves for a different company willing to pay them $20-30k more to do the same exact job. I’ve been circulating my resume.

I had more bad experiences with them than I could possibly relate, but your comment reminded me of a specific one. I was filling a vacancy and lucked into an outstanding candidate that would let me expand the duties and responsibilities of the position easily. I knew that would mean more money but I made my case to the President and he loved the idea because he felt it was something we needed to be doing all along but hadn’t been able to because the former incumbent didn’t have the skills. I found the extra money and immediately re-wrote the whole position description and list of skills/experience required and sent it off to HR. They sent it back with their salary rating with a list of reasons why it was far lower than what it deserved. We had a lengthy back and forth for weeks while the candidate swung in the breeze. Finally the boss had to tell them to get with the program and get out of the way. Just useless.

@ab348 - we've been through similar things, except we didn't get to make the hire because "it's not in the budget."
